RE: ESM STUKA CG
ORIGINAL: kahloq Everything on mine was set properly regarding the flaps. It did not roll over until after it stalled. It simply went nose immediately and I don't mean just a little. The nose was at about 70 degree angle the second the wheels left the ground. Had the flap alignment been the issue, it would not have dropped the tail that way. Might have wanted to climb a good amount, but nothing a forward push of the elevator couldn't compensate for.....and the ailerons wouldnt have been super sensitive. I now have a BH stuka and while not as good looking, I painted it, it flies fine.
Yes, and mine was perfectly fine too, balanced at 13.5 cm, after finding it nose heavy at 12.5 cm.

RE: ESM STUKA CG
I will have to disagree with Kahloq in this case. Sorry Kahlog!!![:o] (We have "discussed" this before...) Mine was balanced at 13.5 cm, after finding it nose heavy at 12.5 cm. It is extremely important to follow the manual on how to set the flaps attack angle correctly. Otherwise there is an enourmous lift effect from them at takeoff. I set them in parallell with the underside of the wing. It is also important to have them equally set. The sightest difference and it wants to roll over at takeoff. Happened to me once. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcQflHxaMXc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CUTlnEwC4A
ORIGINAL: BadAzzMaxx They do not come with a RCexl ignition.. Milton
Milton, surely you dont know what Hobbyking is shipping? Or ? Mine was labelled RcExl. I am pretty sure. It is one year ago. Will ask Ticketec of a photo of his ignition on the ESM D9 thread. Does it matter? I had exactly the same problems with the RcExl ignitions I ordered after that. Jose, your lovely Ta 152 is scale 1/5, right? Then it would probably fit? It fits in a 1/5 D9. Ticketec got 5600 rpm on a Menz 22x10 and his ESM D9 flew well. He was lucky, and got a functioning engine. If you read the Hobbyking reviews, you will see its a bit random. So, I was aware of that before ordering. So when trying out C&H Ignition, I hope for the same. If so I will test-fly it again. I might have to try to fiddle with the gasket on the reed valve too. Or the carb. I dont know. In any case its worth a try. Its a cute engine with lots of potensial. Wish me luck! I noted down these numbers a year ago, hope they are correct; Center top sparkplug-cap: 103 mm <== They are hidden just under the cowl flaps !! Center top engine: 97mm

Milton, The original ignition looked nothing like that. It was RcExl. I got my engine from Hobbyking. The ignition is long gone, thrown in the bin. Sorry about that, but I tend to throw away stuff after a while. It was marked RcExl, however. Telemaster; I have many friends that like glow too. I switched from glow to avoid some of the negative aspects of it, but yes, there are positive aspects too. I have my reasons to prefer gasoline, however. [:)] Probably just a question of preferance.

RE: XYZ Ignition problems. Engine won't start. NEED HELP
I have the same regulator on many planes. Seems to work. Dont have any 4.8 Volts batteries in the house anymore. In this case; Since I have two NEW RcExl ignitions, I can switch between them out one by one. One works, the other one doesnt. Same regulator. Also tried switching regulator. In this case when I say "doesnt work" it means; No spark. The regulator gives 5Volts out. In another case; How the original RcExl stopped "working"; The old RcExl worked for a while. Suddenly one day, they doesnt work anymore. The silly thing is that Murphy is into play here. Because when I say "work" or "doesnt work" in this case, it is more complicated than that. They actually give a spark; I have an ignition tester. You can change the rpm; It simulates signals from the hall-sensor. And there is sparks. But unfortunately, I think, the sparks are too weak. The engine doesnt start. Switch to another ignition, and all is okay. My guess is; There is no spark under compression. Tired of it now. I have an ignition from C&H Ignition on its way. Will wait for it and check it out. If it works, no more RcExl for me. I cannot use any more precious time on such things. The RcExl cost me $75 a piece. I will rather pay a bit more, if that means I get quality, and no more hassle. Every time. But of course, it remains to be seen whether C&H Ignitions is hasslefree. I sincerely hope they are. They accept 7.4 Volts, I think. No regulator, in other words.

Okay. In post 77 you show us a picture of a BMF 80 with gear. That was the original solution that caught my interest ; an 80cc single cylinder with gear. Otherwise I am afraid the price skyrocket into the Kolm region..... Something similar to Mick Reeves solution for the G62, but stronger, fitting into the nose of a 1/4 scale 109.

RE: Saito FG57 Fourstroke
Adrian, the ignitions looks good. On a Saito FG-57 using a standard RcExcl one must remove the ring around the plug cap. The original directly from Saito is slimmer. Otherwise there is no way one can get the plug cap in place. It is too tight. That means one has to solder a wire to the screen of the plug cable in order to ground it. And mount the wire to some screw on the engine. Otherwise the spark has nowhere to go.

I have used up 4 RcExl ignitions on it now, and are getting tired of the problem. There could be a marked for the KMP variant too. I dont know, but..... A new breed of warbird-fliers are getting interested in warbirds here in Norway now. It is those who just like to fly, and dont know much about planes, really. They have been flying 3-D and acro and all that for years, the Tuppeware planes, in short. Light boxes with engine and wings. In the last few years, they have been "exposed" to warbirds, mainly thanks to ESM. They expect the warbirds to have Tuppeware-weight, too. Maybe the KMP has just that.

The original ignition only lasted a while . I am on the third ignition now. The last two I bought; One of them gives no spark whatsoever. The other one works. sort of.

RE: Saito FG57 Fourstroke
Update; Advantage Hobby told me I need to explain the problem with pictures, and send it to them, and they would forward it to Saito. I did that. So it seems this will take some time.....the Corsair has been grounded for quite a while now. The situation up until now in short; In march 2011, I bought the FG-57 from Advantage Hobby. I also have the FG-36. I love these engines. Since I got the FG-57 so early, I got the first, now old style ignition (and sensor). The ignition lasted a year ( 30 flights) . I used a Life A123 battery directly on it, which is a bit to high voltage. Probably was the cause. And maybe not. Anyway; I bought a new RcExcl ignition from Octopus RC . ($75, instead of $222 on Advantage Hobby. The picture of SAIG57T153 on Advantage Hobby shows the old ignition....) This time using a 5V regulator. It lasted about 15 flights. Bought two more from Octopus RC. One of them didn’t work. The other one doesn’t give full rpm on the Saito, only 4500 rpm with a Menz 22x10. ( Should be approx 6500 rpm) Then I read on the forums that there is a new ignition for the Saito FG-57. The same quality as for my FG-36. I was very happy to read about my modeler friends on the forums having the new FG-57 and that it is working well. So I ordered 2 ignitions from Advantage Hobby. SAIG57T153. $222 x 2. Remember: The old ignition sensor I got with the FG-57, March 2011 has a 3 Wire Futaba Plug. ( See picture below) The new sensor plug from the new ignition, SAIG57T153 has a 2 Wire, new style plug. ( See picture below) So, the new SAIG57T153 ignition is for a new type of sensor. With two wires and a different plug. ( But the SAIG57T153 ignition set contains the old style sensor; Cannot be used. ) My situation now is that; I have a FG-57 with many old style sensors, and old style ignitions, none of them working properly. And 2 new ignitions for $222 x 2 but no new sensors.
ORIGINAL: w8ye Some newer Saito FG engines have RCEXL ignitions (hall effect sensor) but they say ''Saito'' on them. The older ones had a Saito ignition made by someone else with a inductive sensor. The old style ignition was timed at Top Dead Center while the new ones are at 28 degrees or so. The sensors are in the same postion on the crankcase but saito moved the position of the magnet.
Holy CRAP!!! That could explain why the engine only wanted to run at full throttle, coughing, spitting and stopping as soon as I throttled down!!!! Arrrghh!! [:'(][:'(][:'(]

RE: Saito FG57 Fourstroke
ORIGINAL: Old Fart On my ignition there are three wires with plugs only...where is the earth wire or is it grounded at the sensor???
When you say "is it grounded at the sensor? ", then I must understand what 'it' means. If 'it' means the igition box itself, then "grounding" is via the shielding of the spark-plug wire to the spark plug cap. The current goes to the spark-plug, jumps over as a spark to the ground. Ground ( The engine) is again connected to the ignitionbox since the sparkplug is connected to the cap, which again is connected to the shield. Somethimes, the ring around the spark plug cap might be missing, resulting in not so good connection between Sparkplug ground, and the sparkplug cap. Then you could have a problem....it is important to keep that ring. I think the green wire It 'it' means the sensor, then "grounding" is the black wire in the 3-wire plug to the sensor.
ORIGINAL: Mr_Grump I tried two new RCEXL ignitions on the Zenoah but with the same result. I changed everything externally. I checked the fly wheel key to see if it had shifted since it appeared to be a timing problem. It starts and when the ignition changes (advances?) the timing, it dies. I changed the sensor, ignition, battery, switch, checked the wiring, even changed the carb. Still the same result. I even took an RCEXL ignition off a Zenoah G20 which is the same ignition, it wouldn't work on the G26EI. One of these days, I'm going to tear the engine down. Mr G
Very strange. ya33; (This is not regarding Saito, really, but RcExl.) About the RcExl ignitions from OctopusRc; You remember the video about Sist Fw 190 D9 and the XYZ 53cc didnt get as much power as expected? Well; One of the experiments I did today, was testing the RcExl ignition used on the XYZ 53cc on the Saito FG-57 instead. And you know what? The Saito started, but I got only 4700 rpm max, instead of the usual 6500 rpm. ( !! ) Interesting! It means that I will probably get more power from the XYZ as soon as I find another ignition for it.

Folks, this is the second ignition from Advantage Hobby. The first one that came with the engine, I run 2S Life directly on an ignition that said 5V to 6V. Therefore I cannot complain. It lasted a year or so. One year with happy flying. So this is the second one from Advantage Hobby. But with the wrong sensor, so I havent tested it yet. It is very different from the first one. So all in all, the FG57 has worked very well for me, but I used to high voltage on the first ignition.

The KMP version? How can that be? The KMP version does not have the leading edge change of sweep-back at the wing cannons. The KMP version has a straight ARF'ish leading edge all the way from wing-root to wingtip. Easy to build at the factory , difficult to change.... You can find it "out there", and it is completely equal to the fist pictures we saw of it....

Sorry for being unclear. I meant the threads on the adjustment screw. hehe. Gruumpy, If we are talking about the RcExl type with three wires, I can tell you that I have boght 4 the last year from Octopus RC, and had nothing but trouble. For my XYZ 53 cc. Thats why I was happy to see that the FG-57 ignition was a new type. I dont know whats going on with the RcExl ignitions, I liked them so much with the tacho output, but they have only lasted for a short while for me in conjunction with the XYZ. Could it be that those that come with the engines are sort of "screened" from a production-line of ignitions, and are the ones working? And when we buy them individually, we get them from the same production line, "unscreened"? So that we randomly get garbage? You agree it might seem that way? And the screened ones only works for so long....

But suddenly one day it refused to start. I am longing for the day when it is back in its good old shape !!! I love this engine. I have a Saito FG-36 as well. It is behaving just as well. The only thing I have had to adjust is the Low needle. It is impotant to adjust correctly, even to avoid coughing and stuff at high speed in the air. Not just for idle. The valves, yes. Is it your impression that the adjustment thread is to course?
