RE: GP Patty Wagstaff - Building & Flying
Tom, I really appreciate that offer to ship the glue, but impatience got the best of me and I went another route on the hinges. I had a guy over here in Germany tell me he has had Robart hinges break twice. So now everyone has commented both positive and negative on every different hinge method. Haha; So I just used some Graupner heavy duty nylon pin hinges and 30 minute Z poxy. I then pinned each hinge half with a steel pin from the bottom, I don’t think they will go anywhere now and they look great. I sealed the under side with white moncote and it also looks great. As for the pull- pull I would appreciate a measurement and/or a photo of where the wire exits the fuse that would be very helpful. I know that must be very critical because if I mis-measure or should I say mis-guess that location, the cable could easily rub against one of the formers. You can post them or just email them to me at scott@scottspix.com I am not sure where Mons is but I live very close to the Belgium border in Germany I appreciate your help

I see several Europeans on this thread. Does anyone over here know where I can buy Gorilla Glue or something similar and what it is called in Europe?

RE: GP Patty Wagstaff - Building & Flying
This is my first post to this thread. I have read almost all of the three threads on this plane in the last few months and have learned very much. I just now realized that there are three long threads and not just two, so I decided to go ahead and ask my question and give my setup and get the opinions. First my question is concerning the pull pull system for the rudder. can some one tell me the exact spot they cam through the fuselage out to the control arms so that it is in a straight line? I have a 120 size Extra that I have pull-pull on but it was desinged that way and had tubes already in the right spots. I read a little about some people crossing the cables but no mention of where they exited the fuse. I have not started the buil yet just got her several days ago and am waiting on most of my stuff wich is all over the ocean somewhere on its way to my APO BOX. (took Patty six weeks to get here). I finally gave in to the robart hinge piont installation idea. I was dead set on going with the stock CA hinges becuase I too was once a doubter of them but have now been flying with them for several years with no problems, however after reading this thread I will not sleep well at night unless I put the Robarts in. So I really can't start on her until they get the hinges that I will order in a few minutes ARRRR!!! I guess I will order some Gorilla Glue also. I am in Germany so I can't just runm to Home Depot. My intended set up is as follows DA 50 Slimline pitts W/smoke HS-5945 (single on rudder pull-pull) HS-5925 ailerons and elevators whatever I have laying around for throttle and choke graphtech gear and tail wheel assembly slimline showtime pump 5 cell 2200 mh NiMh rcvr 4 cell 2200 mh NIMh Ing Let me know what you think any input is appreciated

RE: First flights of GP Super Stearman w/ G26
I drilled a second hole in the firewall above the stock tank hole and placed a 14oz Kavan tank directly above the stock tank. It is a tight fit but that keeps everything nice and secure. It keeps the tank very close to the CG and also keeps most of the plumbing in the cowel and out of the fuse. The only thing in the fuse is the pump itself. You can see in the attached photo the two holes I drilled for the tygon tubing to route it back to the pump. I strapped the pump to the bottom of the battery tray and the 5 cell smoke battery on the other side. My receiver battery is under the stock fuel tank. With the Saito 150 it balances perfect. I use a GP geas refueler port on one side for smoke oil and a glw on the other side for fuel. I started with the TME deluxe but have switched now to the sullivan sky writter because I like to be able to adjust flow rate from the radio, and I believe it is a better overall pump. Hope this helps. The picture of it flying is producing smoke with the TME pump, the sullivan actuall produces better smoke, well only because I have it adjusted better, but it is much easier to adjust.

MVVS 45 or 58
I am getting the Great Planes Patty Wagstaff 300s. It has a wing span of 78" and final wieght of 14 - 16 lb. The specs call for 41-65cc gas engine. The guy at my LHS says the 58 would be to much engine because it is more powerful that other brands. I thought the 58 would be best but he says it would be to much engine. I know people who have Zenoah g62 on it and he says the MVVS 45 has more power. Is this possible.

I am also interested in hearing more about the thrust issue of the firewall. If anyone is interested I found an online place that sells these models for $177.00 that includes shipping to the U.S. that is a great price. http://www.modelflight.com.au/esm_f3a_aerobatics.htm

RE: Freestyle Rush....Does Everything....Why buy a big plane??? VIDS
Had my first flight with the Rush last weekend and I love it. This week I moved the rudder servo to the tail. I put it on the opposite side of the elevator servo and just below. On about my 8th flight the plane stopped responding to my inputs. Fail safe kicked in my throttle went to idle and it flew about five loops before it hit the ground. Complete loss:(. After checking everything out I found it was the crystal. I have never had that happen berore and it really sucks!!! I totally loved that plane. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get in touch with Cheeta RC. There website has been down for several weeks now, and I know they have the best price. I have only found one other place that carries them (where I got my first one) and it was $209.00 plus 36.00 shipping to my APO box. I would like to get in touch with cheetah and see if they have them in stock. $179.00 is much better. Thanks Scott

RE: Freestyle Rush....Does Everything....Why buy a big plane??? VIDS
Thanks Sonicboom, Unfortunatley I have already drilled the holes for the engine mount. I did move it about 3mm to the left of center but I didn't know I needed to make adjustments for up thrust. i will probably just put a couple washers behind the left mount and see how it flies like that. Thanks for the info I will keep you updated. I am going to put the elevator servo in the rear and the rudder in the fuse using the pull pull. There doesn't seem to be room to put both servos in the tail.

Finally got my freestyle rush. Just got the wing together tonight and will probably finish tomorrow. Does anyone know if you need to add the right thrust when mounting the engine or is it built in the kit. It is really hard to tell even when I stand it on the firewall. Thanks

RE: Flight time on a Saito 150
Well I have my engine back and I ran it again. Still the same thing except now the leaking is not black. It just will not run steady at any rpm. It surges and then lopes. Sometimes it stays at full rpm for 5 to 6 seconds at a time but then it bogs down again. It is when it bogs down that I see the oil rapidly ooz out around the front bearing so I think the problem is related. I took off the valve covers and realized that the push rod on the intake side was not sitting in the set screw at the top. I put it in the proper place and reset the clearance on both sides. I thought for sure that was my problem, but it did't seem to make any difference. I guess I will just have to send it in for repair unless some one has any other advice

RE: Flight time on a Saito 150
Thanks for the info. I bet my crankcase vent got cloged because it started doing it all of a suuden. I just sent the engine with a friend to get some stuff machined for my spinner so I won't be able to check for a couple of days. I also think part of my problem was the fuel. After reading many threads here I saw many people say to add 2% castrol to your mix to save the bearings on 4 strokes. Well I am stationed in Germany and I use the best oil they have over here, it's called Aerosave. I mixed 18% Aerosave 2% castrol and 10% nitro(mixture in the first tank I ran and it's the first time I have tried it). I just had some of my Dutch friends over that have been using Aerosave for years and they say that you should not mix castrol with Aerosave(wish I had known that two hours ago). According to them Aersave is the most advanced stuff you can buy and you don't need castrol because this oil has a much higher flash point than other synthetics. ( I hope I can still get this stuff when I come back home to the states) Europeans never run more than 15% oil for anything. Still I have been mixing 18% for all my engines (OS and Saito) because that is what the manufacturer says. They all laugh at me and say they have been running 15% oil for years and there engines are fine hmm oh well. So anyway I guess the black I was getting was comming from mixing castrol with aerosave oil and this probably caused my crank case vent to get clogged. The second tank I ran through was just 18% Aerosave, but it will probably take a while to get all the burnt castrol out of the engine. Thanks for all the advice I will let you know how it turns out when I get the engine back.

RE: Flight time on a Saito 150
That is possible I am in Germany and it is in the mid fourties. I am running it on a stand though. I guess I will just wait until it warms up and try again. I also have a 82a and it runs fine.

RE: Saito .82 best 3D prop!!!!
I use a 14x6 APC on my 82a and it seems to pull out of a hover just fine. I have it on a Kange Fun Fly. This plane is a little bigger and heavier than the U-can-do 46. I did try a 15x4 wide and like you found the engine wouldn't spin up. Just my 2 cents

RE: Flight time on a Saito 150
I also just bought a new Saito 150. I have run about two 20 oz tanks through it on the stand. I also noticed excess black fuel leaking around the front bearings, it is good to hear that is normal. Mine also leaks around the valve covers quite a bit and I have them plenty tight. It runs okay at 5 turns out for a little bit but then it starts acting like it is starving for fuel. I changed all the lines and the clunk (I had a filter clunk in it at first). Still the same thing. Even if I back the needle valve out to where it is almost falling out it still doesn't run just right. Again acting like it is starving for fuel. I mean it runs, but it sputters a little, and backing it out doesn't change anything. Also the exhaust is turning the fuel black. Not just a little bit but a lot. Any advice on this problem?

RE: GP Super Stearman
I am building a Super stearman right now also. I guess by now you are probably finished with yours so I wanted to see what you did with your smoke tank. I found that I can fit a 14oz tank directly above the supplied fuel tank. With a little foam I think the fuel tank will secure the smoke tank perfectly. I was going to drill an opening large enough for the mouth of the smoke tank to exit the firewall just like the fuel tank. That way the smoke tank stays on the CG and all my plumbing can stay outside the fuse. There is plenty of room in the cowl for the smoke pump. I am using the TME simple Smoke Pump II. Everywhere I read it says I should not mount the pump directly to the firewall because of the vibration. I am using a saito 150 and I hear it vibrates a lot. Does anyone have any ideas how the pump can be mounted on the firewall and not vibrate too much. I was very happy when I realized I could get the smoke tank above the fuel tank, but then bummed when I found out I shouldn't mount the pump to the firewall. Does anyone see any other problems with this setup? Scott

RE: GP Super Stearman
Just wondering if anyone who has decided to use 4 servos instead of two would like to sell their connecting rods that go from the top to the bottom aileron. I am about two evenings into building my stearman and noticed one of the 4-40 ends on my connecting rod is stripped completely out. So I was justy wondering since I know some prople are using 4 servos. I have contacted Great Planes and I am sure they will be helpful, but I am stationed in Germany and it will probably take a long time if I have to send it to them and then wait for them to send me another.

Tumbler, I have been watching your videos for a while now. I really love that plane. I just bought a saito 82 for my Kange fun 50, but I plan on getting the Rush to put it in. I was just wonder what you had to do to reinforce the fuselage when you mounted the servos in the back. On my fun 50 they are in the back but the kit was made that way. Thanks Scott

RE: First flights of GP Super Stearman w/ G26
Well I went to my LHS with the fuse and cowling to see how the MVVS 26 would fit in. They only had one muffler and it would not even come close to working in the Stearman. Here in Germany the MVVS engines are a lot less expensive than I can find them online, even after you convert dollars to Euros (which is very sad right now). I decided to wait and see what muffler would work and there aren't many available for that engine. After crunching many numbers thrust vs wieght and cost. I reverted back to the idea of a glow engine. I think this kit is right on the verge of Gas and Glow and for the weight you get more power with glow. I am planning on putting the Saito FA 180 in my Stearman and make my next plane bigger and go Gas then. The Saito weighs less than the OS 120 and has more power. How can I go wrong with that. The only down side I hear about the 180 over the 150 is that it has more vibration. I don't know how big of a deal that is. can anyone tell me? The 180 is only $20.00 more than the 150 at wholesaletrains.com so it only makes sense to me to go with the 180 since it doesn't weigh any more. Of course I am still looking for advice on this decision.

RE: First flights of GP Super Stearman w/ G26
I am still debating using an OS FS 120 because I have one but I wanted to get into gas. Now that I am looking at the kit I know installing the 120 would be a lot easier, however I still am itchung to go gas. It is hard to compare the output between glow and gas. For instance the MVVS 26cc says it has 3.8HP or 2,8KW @ 9000 RPM. Now that definatley sounds like more output than the Zenoah G26 or the OS FS 120. Can you just look at these figures and go by the numbers or is there something else to look at. I don't want to put too much power in the Stearman, but I have too many planes that I wish I had bought bigger engines for and I don't want to make that mistake again. Sorry I am rambling, I guess I just want to make sure that the MVVS 26cc actually has quit a bit more power than the OS fS 120. Thanks

RE: First flights of GP Super Stearman w/ G26
I just received GP Super Stearman yesterday after waiting two months for shipping. (I am stationed in Germany). I wish I had not waited this long to start reading these forums about this plane. I am perplexed with the same decision that most seem to be here. WHAT ENGINE DO I WANT? I am looking seriously at the MVVS 26cc or 35cc gasser. Does anyone know anything about these engines? It seems that the 26cc has quite a bit more power than the G26. They are lighter and they mount more like a glow engine so I wouldn’t have to do anything to the firewall. Several guys at my field have the 35cc MVVS and they love it. I just can’t decide if 35cc is too much for the super stearman. Appreciate any advice. Scott

Fyuel tank and engine size
I just bought an EXTRA 330L ARF in Germany where I presently live. The kit is from a company in Holland called HET-RC. I have never heard of them before, but I got a great deal on the kit. It has a 62" span and it is 48 inches long. (it seems very light). This is the biggest plane I have owned and I have a few questions. The kit calls for a .47-.91 2c or a .80-120 4c. I bought an OS FS 120 SE for it and now I am wondering if it is too big for this light kit. I was wondering what some of the disadvantages are if it is too much engine (other than nose heavy). Also there are almost no instructions or pictures with the kit. The place it says I should but the fuel tank is just a big wide open space with no where to securley fasten it. I was wondering if anyone could give me some good advice on securing the tank in a large open space. Thanks
