RE: Zenoah 26 upgrades
One change no one has mentioned is the prop. G-26's like to rev up. I gained 1,000 rpm and much improved performance by going from a Menz 16X8 prop to a (OH MY GOD!) Master Air Screw 16 X 8 nylon prop, 8,000 to 9,000 rpm. Other flyers could not believe that the 26 liked that cheap prop, It turned the plane into a rocket ship. Don't know how it would work on an IMAC style plane. Larry

RE: please identify this engine
The nice thing about the Chinese engines is you get the pleasure of replacing them every couple years! A flying buddy just had his DLE 55 break the top of the piston off at the ring groove!! Less than 1 gallon of fuel through it! He has flown gas for years with ZDZ and Zenoah engines with no problems. I am sure that the EVRA will still be running long after the Chinese engines have been remelted and resold, but it isn't nearly as trendy. As you may notice I am not a big fan of the clone engines. RE: Old Question... Is this a warbird?
As a many time CD of warbird events my answer is Yes, it is a warbird just as much as an AT-6 is a war bird. Now, would we let you fly it at our event? Most war bird events try to keep things moving all the time due to limited flying opportunities and large numbers of flyers waiting to fly. That said I would definitely attempt to work in a glider when possible. Obviously a glider would be something of a problem trying to work into the landing sequence so it would probably be flown during a slack time like during lunch break. Would be an sure fire crowd favorite though! Larry CD War Birds Over Pueblo Our 13th year in a row!!

Leaving a little gas in the tank after flying keeps the tygon from hardening as soon. I have a plane with a gas tank with tygon in it that is eight years old and still flexable. Larry

RE: Warbirds Over Pueblo
We would like to thank everyone who attended the 12th annual War Birds Over Pueblo this year. Turnout was good, 40 pilots and 100 or so planes. Weather was perfect both days with 3-5 mph wind right down the runway on bright and sunny 90 degree days. Flying went well with only two "oops" and the veterans this year were special. RE: Warbirds Over Pueblo
Looks like we will have some new war birds this weekend. Brent will be flying his new Robart P-47 covered with flite metal, Sam and Duane have a Don Smith Hellcat with a quadra 75, Rob will have a P-40, Paul a ESM Spitfire and, if all goes well Mark has a Ziroli DC-3 ready to maiden and John Boren may have his scratch built giant scale Kayaba autogyro!!!, USPS willing. (waiting for some special parts). I will have a 88" Chipmunk in RAF colors. So it looks like a rather interesting weekend coming up. Larry

Warbirds Over Pueblo
Just want to invite everyone in the Rocky Mt. area to our 12th annual Warbirds Over Pueblo event on September 1st and 2nd. Every year we honor several veterans at a noon Sat. ceremony. This year we will have a pilot from the Tuskegee airmen who flew 47s in Italy and a Navy Lt. Commander who was shot down and spent 6 years in the Hanoi Hilton! I am enclosing some pictures from our last event and one of our flyers. Hope to see all our old friends and make some new ones. RE: K&B Sportster Club
When the piston goes up and down it rocks slightly due to the side thrust of the rod. The wear pattern of the bore will reflect this, so changing the orientation of the cylinder after it has broken in will reverse the wear pattern. Will require break in again and probably cut life and performance. In other words Not a good Idea! but will work. Larry

Having flown the TF 47 since they came out a Quadra 75 is massive overkill! Mine have G-62's in them and that is much more than needed. I fly at 5,000 feet! My suggestion is sell the 75 and use the money for a g-62 or DLE 55. Larry

RE: My main question?
Not flying well with other planes in the air is pretty common. Only one way to get over that, force yourself to fly with others in the sky. As long as you fly by yourself or with no planes in the sky with you the less likely you are to get over the uneasiness you feel. When you get to where you don't concentrate all the time on your plane and start seeing more of what is going on around you it will get a lot easier. Hang in there, it will change. Larry

Good guys shoutout
When a manufacturer bends over backwards to fill an order for a warbird pilot they deserve a shoutout. One of our war birds group, Brent, needed a replacement muffler for his ten year old Brison 5.8 in a Ziroli big 47. The old one had cracked and fallen apart after many flights. In an effort to replace the muffler Brent contacted several of the large muffler mfg inquiring about a replacement. He received comments ranging from "not interested in that small a market" to "I wouldn't build a Brison 5.8 muffler if you paid me $800. You warbird guys are not worth the effort". Finally finding the source of the muffler from the original buyer he contacted J&A Mfg. who was happy to take the time to make him a new muffler and repaired the old one to like new condition for a very reasonable amount. I want to give a big shout out to J&A Mfg. for great customer service. Larry[:D]

RE: What model S.E.5a is this?
It's a Dave Boddington kit from England. Probably came from Proctor who used to sell them. I have one identical to the one in the picture. Proctor also handles the Laser engines. Very high quality plane, original won English Scale Nationals. Only the cockpit section is fiberglass. Your missing the cowl which should cover the engine compartment. Unfortunately the plane is no longer available. Mine won a Scale Masters regional contest 10 years ago with an OS 120 four stroke later replaced with a Saito 180 for more grunt. Larry

RE: CRRC pro GP50R Porting. (What the??)
I don't understand why guys mess with the Chinese POS engines. It's got to be more than price. I've seen a ton of them, probably 10% run well, 40% run lousy and the rest don't last long enough to see how they would run. By the time you replace all the defective parts you could have bought a good quality engine or two and saved a few planes. I can think of one , just one, of those engines that actually runs well and thats the DLE. Quality is nothing like the DA they cloned but not bad, longevity is another matter. Larry

RE: Fox twin 6.4 Engine
A single cylinder engine will have more power than a twin of the same displacement (there are limits though) because it has less moving parts, in particular pistons with rings, than the twin. Less moving parts equals less friction. Until the vibration becomes a big problem the single will put out more power. Engines which are piston ported, G-62, Brisons, like to turn up to develop their power. Reed valve and rotary valve engines can develop their power at lower rpm's which means bigger props. Let a Sach's or a G-62 turn up by running a smaller prop or less pitch and they become real bears. Trying to run them at 6500 rpm like a DA and they don't compare. Prop them for 7000+ on the ground and they will impress everyone. I run a 20X10 or 20X8X14 prop on a 26lb P47 and fliers are always thinking it has a ZDZ80 or DA85 in it. Larry

RE: GAS EQUIVALENTS TO GLOW ENGINES?
To give you some idea I replaced a 35cc gas engine on a scale biplane with a ST2500 running straight fuel, no nitro and saw a pretty large gain in performance. I would think you need at least a 40cc gasser if not bigger to equal the ST2500. My ST2500's will turn a 18X8 prop ( should be equivalent to a 20X6) at 9,000 rpm. I use a 1.5 multiplier when trying to equate gas to glow, seems close. Larry

RE: Best Warbird Batteries?
I'm pretty conservative with my warbird batteries. I still use my good nicads but replace them with NiMh batteries when needed. I know that a123 batteries are the latest and greatest, but, as I said, I'm very conservative with my warbirds! I have looked into the advantages and disadvantages of NiMh's and a123 batteries and here is my opinion for what it's worth. NiMh- VS a123. Size- approximately the same for the same capacity. Weight- approximately the same for the same capacity Disadvantages- lose their charge faster than an a123, ~10% per month compared with almost 0 for the a123. You can get NiMh batteries in long life forms that are very close to the same as the a123 as far as charge loss, but at higher cost. Advantages- No special chargers needed unless you want to quick charge at higher than max suggested rate. I still use my nicad chargers with no problems, I would have to invest in a rather expensive multi-charger for the a123 batteries. Cost - less, quality of batteries no problem if you stay away from cheap Chinese knock offs. More or less a direct replacement for nicads with twice the capacity. Proven technology Times change and I am sure I will eventually go to a123's or whatever replaces them, but for now, I don't need to replace just for the sake of replacing. P.S. Those who use LiPo batteries in warbirds (except electrics) are just nuts!!! Larry

Gas engine forum
Anyone else think this forum is getting less and less useful? Three out of four posts involve one or the other Chinese engines, most about either how great they are ( from the dealers) or why won't a $250 POS run like a $500 engine. This forum was once full of useful info about care and feeding of gas engines, opinions on performance and quality, and informed discussions. Now I just scan down the list, disregarding the obvious self-serving, the uninformed or ill informed and the don't know their *** from a hole in the ground posts. That leaves about 25%. My suggestion is to set up a specific forum for Chinese engines for those interested in them. Just frustration I guess! Larry

RE: Abandoned
A lot of what you've heard applies to equipment supplied to Britain and her commonwealth countries, Australia, Canada, etc. Under terms of the lend lease agreement (material in exchange for the right to construct bases on their soil) the equipment had to either be destroyed or returned at the end of the war. The cost of returning the equipment was prohibitive so much of it was dumped or buried, case in point the Spitfires. The other thing to consider is that many of the aircraft were obsoleted by the coming of jets so their value was basically nil. Aircraft dumped off of the carriers were considered worn out and of little value. Their value is high only in light of the passage of time. At the end of the war they had only scrap value. Many brand new planes were flown from the factory to the scrap yard because the aluminum was needed more than the plane! Larry

It's a question as old as the hobby. Scale looks versus non scale functionality. After having planes crash due to problems associated with trying to look scale and seeing dozens of others bite the dust I opt for functionality over looks every time. Larry
