RE: best material for hull
Hi GLX & DMYC 42, I tried to edit my post re IOM and using Carbon Fibre. Can't see how to do an edit. Yes, I was totally wrong and IOMs are only made from fibreglass. No exotics. By coincidence I am building an IOM right now and have had to read the class rules.... need a combination law degree and ship builders licence. QUESTION - What is the rule on the Mast Post Tube? Basically I have a mast box / keel box combo with cutout in deck for mast. Into the cutout I have a removeable Mast Tube which slides into the mast box. Is this as per rules? And why does the tube have to be removeable? Or have I read the rules wrong. Is it only if the Mast Tube is made from Carbon Fibre that it has to be removeable? My Main Sheet Tube is carbon fibre and is fixed vertical to the hull floor. Is this OK as it is not structural and just guides the sheet for the Main Boom? Larry L.

RE: AC 12 Team NewZealand
G'Day Yachty Nut, Solidworks.... will do a search after this for a download copy. Just to have a look. Sell your own IOM kit for cost with all the best fittings, radio and winch included. With 3 sets of rigs. I'd guess that would still cost a pretty penny. As an example. An IOM 'B' rig complete sells here for $AU180. Add sails at say $100. Now times that by 3 rigs - approx $840. RMG sailwinch $220. Budget radio $150. Fin, rudder, bulb, rigging another $300. All up, my guess, $1,600 for an unpainted boat. And the customer has to be able to put all the bits together. Most people can't work out IKEA stuff let alone assembling an IOM. In one of my careers I used to illustrate and write assembly instructions (Technical Illustrator). For an IOM assembly you would need to write a short book. I don't think a newbie could build an IOM. They have enough problems with the Chinese kit boats. You've seen the RCGroups posts where they discuss for pages why their boat keeps falling over when it has spaghetti for sheets. I'm aiming at making IOMs for about $800 aimed at RC sailors who have had a boat or are club members. Only supply an 'A' rig and make my own sails. Use a cheaper Sail servo. At $800 I could still make a profit. My problem is packaging to sell interstate. I estimate my Noux hull and deck have cost me about $30 to make. That's not counting the cost of the mold. Keel fin box with mast post I just made and glassed cost about $2. Fin and rudder will cost me about $10. Bulbs cost me $15. This is why I try to avoid buying things like a mast ram for $8. Still your idea sounds interesting. If I can help just ask. Like I said, I used to be a Technical Illustrator. Before that an Engineering Draftsman. Last career was advertising as a designer. Need a web site? Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Yachty Nut, U are very clever. I posted already in Smoofty's. Notice U have no mast ram. With a sloping cockpit bulkhead where does a mast ram go? Can U create 3D dwg from Noux cross-sections? Re my Noux build - finished plugs for hull and deck. Layed glass today. Boat ready to pull tomorrow when glass cures. Will post picks if all OK. So far looks great. Very smooth, which means very little sanding required. I also discovered the original drawings (Anders Wallin) don't match; or Noux 1 and Noux 2 are different hulls. The keel box PDF dimensions don't fit with the layout drawings. And his profile depths don't match either. There is about a 10mm difference in space below deck for keel box to fit. I'm taking measurements directly from my hull. Lucky I delayed making the fin and keel box. Also been researching fins and found a post by Claudio on making fins and rudders. Technical section in Nordic IOMs (I think). He says they use this technique and have a fin ready the same day. Step 1. Cut shapes to size for fin - left & right sides. Step 2. Glue in spacer (thickness to make profile) to inside face and thin hard wood strips along edges. Can use carbon here or fibreglass. Glue in threaded rods top and bottom - for bulb and deck mount. 3. Glue edges together and clamp to create convex shape. 4. Fill void top and bottom with epoxy and when dry sand to finished profile. Done. Additional fibreglassing optional. Could just add coat epoxy resin to waterproof. I'm going to give this a try for a fin with 2mm ply outside, 2mm thk aluminium full length as spacer and 4mm threaded rods epoxied into slots in aluminium top and bottom. For a rudder just use balsa as spacer slotted to take bent rudder post. At the moment I've been making my appendages solid. Claudio's method seems like an easy way to get natural shape without having to sand profile by eye. Will post results. Larry L. [8|]

RE: AC 12 Team NewZealand
Yachty Nut, that 3D PDF file is really clever. First time I've seen one that I can spin, change views, lighting etc. What programme did you use to create? And as Smoofty asked, is it easy to create profiles at 100mm sections? If I gave you drawings to convert to 3D what format? I have no software for AutoCad. I do my drawings in Photoshop which I know is wrong. Can U recommend a simple 3D Cad programme for me to play with and create profiles? Cheers. Larry L. Oh - re my Noux build. Finished plugs for hull and deck. Layed fibreglass today on both and should have a boat tomorrow when glass cures. Then I start building fin, rudder, keel box etc. [:)] [:)][:)][:)]

RE: 7' tall Sailboat
I agree with k4s, some very gentle sanding of the hull being careful of the gunwales and raised keel lip. That should remove cracks and chips. Repair damaged areas with filler. Then mask and aerosol spray in gloss enamel and clear finish. Retain waterline. You could try sanding back down to reveal bare timber but.... danger! you could sand too much timber and create thin patches. Also timber beneth may look nasty. Is the wood teak or cedar? Might just be ply. In the real world, boats like this are normally painted. She will look great with a minimal repaint [:)]. My 2 cents. Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Quick update, finished deck frame drawings. Planked deck and layed fibreglass. Will have a deck mold ready for sanding soon. This is my first attempt at a deck mold. It is hard work. The deck planking is complex. And making sure it is possible to fibreglass is a real concern. I was well aware you can't glass a 90* recess as fibreglass will curve. I allowed for this in my planking. Thanks to K4S and Yachty Nut I now have a neat recess for a mast ram. Thanks again guys. Larry L.

Yachty Nut - you've done it again!!!! Fantastic drawings!!!! Exactly what I needed. I had just finished printing my deck shadows and was about to turn off my computer. Last minute impulse to look here. Lucky [:D] The recess solves so many problems and is a neat solution. My way I was going to have to have an extra station in frames for 20mm offset for bulkhead. Now stick with original plans. Did you do these drawings???? About the IOM on NZ ebay. This was back about six months ago. It was posted on RCGroups. Below are some pics of the boat. I was amazed at the price as I know the boat sold for less than I could buy the rigging. K4s so prices for IOMs in NZ are same as here in OZ. My build. Finished glassing hull outside and inside. When glass cures start sanding. Plus now I can start on deck. Yachty Nut - thanks again. I owe you a beer [:)] Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
K4s, so much to do so little time. The Tempest out of the mold. What are you getting delivered? Hull with deck, keel fin, bulb, rudder? And you fit mast, booms, sails and rigging etc? Talking to an IOM racer here on the weekend. He has one boat on order, Australian made, on a 12 month waiting list. Paying $AU2,500 for boat. No electrics, or winch etc. He said it was a bargain price for a competition boat. I'm planning on building this Noux for about $200 (including mold). If I buy the racing rigging price goes up to $500. This is without electrics. Are IOMs cheaper in NZ? I saw one recently on the NZ version of ebay. Brand new sold for under $400. I'm curious about prices as I sell my boats. Meanwhile I'm still doing the deck shadow drawings. Still deciding on complexity of curves for easy mold build but with a good look. Will post when I build the frames and start planking deck mold. Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Thanks K4s, the mast ram ring is meant to be cut to form a 'C'. Only used as full ring if used at mast foot. My notion is this mast ram is poor design. All the horizontal force is against the adjustment screw dial and the bulkhead. Still most of the photos of IOMs I have show this type of mast ram. Easy to make my own with bolt, washer, nut, lock-nut and a 'C' cup with a blind hole for bolt. At least now I can finish the deck plans allowing about 20mm for a ram. I'm planning on a fibreglass deck which will now be formed with provision for cockpit bulkhead moved forward from the original drawings which had no space for the mast ram. K4s, what boats do you have? Thought you were building a Noux? Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Mark, I don't have a ram. If I did could probably work out myself.... My main query was how it worked as well as space required. Meanwhile build update. Finished planking. Rough sanded and filler gloop on obvious low spots. Let filler harden then another light sand. Sprayed with aerosol filler and then light coat grey paint. Left 24 hours for filler to set and paint to dry. Sanded with 120 grade then 240 sandpaper. Removed from base. Now ready for fibreglass. Why did I paint? This shows all the low spots etc. Pinched the idea from another build by Claudio. Remember this will be a mold for the fibreglass hull. Larry L.

RE: Thunder Tiger Odyssey
Hi Ian,
Hi All - wonder if anyone has built the Odyssey by Thunder Tiger - I'm looking for a starter yacht (no experience sialing) and I like the look of this model more so than the Victorias which some of our club members have. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Ian
I'd strongly recommend you go with the Victoria. You get a proven boat and support from other members when you need to do all the mods to get the boat sailing. The Oddessey looks like a child's toy boat. Lots of deck clutter which is OK for display but not for sailing. From my experience with Thunder Tiger boats the hulls are OK. The sails, mast, booms, rigging all need replacing. The deck furniture needs to be junked. You also still have to buy and fit the sail/rudder servos and get a radio. That's another £100 you need to consider. Visit the Victoria website and see the support. You'll get all the info you need re rerigging. From memory should cost you about £250 to get a boat in the water. Larry L. Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
[sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif][sm=confused.gif] Just had a look at the mast ram I was going to order. How the heck does it work????? Turn the dial and it moves along the thread. Which means the screw needs to adjust from the bulkhead to vary pressure, hence rake. Which means you need another part. A threaded tube glued into the bulkhead and access to the screw head. Am I totally wrong or is this just plain silly? Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Mark aka Yachty Nut, thanks heaps for the pics [:D]. I've not seen a mast ram like yours before. Is it designed just for that boat or an off-the-shelf item? I was planning on just buying a mast ram which is just an adjustment dial and the screw rod. $AU7.30 from RYSA where I get my stuff posted from. They're in Queensland I'm in Sydney. Based on your photos would be easy to modify my design now to incorporate your design with the RYSA mast ram. Yours looks neater. And, any reason you have your mast inside a tube inside a mast post? Isn't this too much, or was the mast post too big? I'm just guessing based on photos. Any more advise on deck fittings, design before I go too far? Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Yachty Nut !!! you must be psychic. I was going to post to ask a question. I've drawn up my own profiles for the Noux deck. It'll be a raised foredeck with a skiff aft. Enough depth to just cover rudder servo. I plan to use a mast ram that goes thru the ???? thingy. Vertical panel that divides cockpit. What I need to know is the exact dimension from the centre of the mast to the face of this support measured along centreline. Anotherwords the space for the Mast Ram. I need this before I can finish the deck plans. I'll try and find a picture or drawing of where I mean. At the moment I just finished planking the hull and am about to spend 2 days sanding the plug. How are you going with your builds. Post pics. Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Hi Scott, I did say at the outset about my PDF file - Note that these are for 2.5mm offset timber planking. Yes the Andres Wallin site has a plan showing offset profiles. I used this drawing and traced the line profiles to produce the printable shadows. With my shadows and 2.5mm thick balsa you get a boat hull at the correct size. Thanks about the Noux and Noux2 difference re deck. I have drawn my own deck profiles to suit my design to suit my own layout. K4S been there tried that. I had very bad results trying to stain balsa. The marker pen run along the edges is a good trick as long as you don't slip. For a clear wood finish I found you can't use pins when planking. You can't scarf the planks (join at 45*). Every mistake in planking will show. You can't use wood filler or spray putty as this will show. Planked deck looks great but I saw one guy in ENgland take a year to do his boat. It's very fiddly especially along the curved hull edge. Better to build a fake deck with false planking seperate on a flat surface. When finished trim deck to size and glue onto hull. Of course you add inner gunwales for support. If you manage all that I've been told spinnaker varnish is the best for a clear finish. The varnish ages over time and gives a "real" boat look. The wood stains I tried looked terrible and soaked thru the balsa. I use epoxy resin for waterproofing, strength and as a final filler for the deck. Then prime and paint. Below are examples of my painting on some of my boats. The 1.7m boat does have a wood stained deck. Larry L.

RE: IOM Noux Shadows
Hi Richard, I'll post more photos BUT I am building a mold [8|]. If you plan to build a boat the normal way, my build pics are no good. Normally you would remove the shadows after you finish planking. With a mold you keep the shadows in for extra strength when sanding and for fibreglassing. After building several boats I find making a plug is much easier in the long run. If you are building normally I would recommend not using an inner keel. That's the plank that fits into the "notch" at the apex of the shadows. It's a pain to tape over to prevent glueing and makes removing the shadows difficult later. For the plug I have added 3 x 12mm notches at the gunwales. Not shown in my drawings. That allows for an extra 12 x 2.5 full length plank for added rigidity along the gunnel line. That's the topmost plank that meets the deck. Once again this only applies for a plug. On a normal build this too is a pain to protect from glueing and removing shadows. Tell me which way you are building and I may have photos from some of my other builds. Here are some pics of my last boat finished this week. It's a modified USOM taken from my mold. Boat #4 from this mold. Larry L.

IOM Noux Shadows
Hi all, I'm about to start building a Noux2 IOM. I'm going to make a plug to make several fibreglass hulls and decks. (Deck plans to come after first hull is pulled.) I thought other boat builders might appreciate the shadows I've just drawn up. They are from Anders Wallin's Noux2 design. Note that these are for 2.5mm offset timber planking. And the "stem" piece fits between the nose and shadow ONE. You can download all of the free detail plans from the Anders Wallin site but the shadows are not there. Cheers [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] Larry L.

RE: thunder tiger
You want an RC racing boat made from fibreglass for $300? If you build one yourself it will cost you closer to $500 depending on winch / sail servo and radio gear. A good sail winch alone costs $AU280. I build 1 metre fibreglass boats. Maybe you should try ebay or your boat club for a good second hand boat. But, I've seen used IOMs for sail at over $2000! Below is one of my recent builds - I sell these for much more than $300 with no radio gear. Larry L.

RE: Sailboat; 6'+ Hull Length?
Hi Highflight_RCU, you want a big boat.... good on ya! I have an AU Class boat which is 5'-7" hull length. Mast is 7'-6". (AU Class because sail area is too big for A Class.) The boat is fantastic to sail. I used to sail real yachts. My 2 cents worth. Scaling plans up is not a good idea. Scaling down from real yachts seems to work. But scaling up from small boats gives odd height to length ratio. Handling the boat out of the water can be interesting. I built myself a buggy with a handle and two wheels. Carries hull, ballast and tools. Even room for a beer cooler. The ballast (bulb weight hanging off keel fin) on my boat weighs 20lbs. Hence the buggy. You'll need to find a good sailmaker too. An idea might be to look at the new IACC120 Class boats. They're 4' long. Build one to learn how then go up to the 6' boat. Here's a link to a forum that has complete plans and step by step build details [link=http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showthread.php?t=5335]IACC120 Build Thread[/link] Pics of my boat below. RE: AC 12 Team NewZealand
Yachty Nut, Looks good! How do you plan to make the deck? And can you post some deck profiles please [8|]. As a PDF???? [:)] I was thinking of making a male plug/mould for the deck and then producing the deck in fibreglass. Problem I have found is getting the deck edge to align with hull. i.e. in plan, the curve of the hull does not match the deck's curve. Easy with skiff back to just make oversize and trim edges. But bow section not so simple. One suggestion for looks. What about a camber on the deck's bow section where it meets the hull? Rather than a sharp join at the gunnels. Something like 8mm radius. Skiff section stays flat. Similar to Claudio's IACC120 being built on RCSailing.net http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showthread.php?t=4991&page=30 Cheers Larry L.

RE: Rubbing Alcohol
ORIGINAL: Breytac Thanks for all your help. When the time comes, I'm not only going to have fun building it, but also sailing it. I've looked at the Victoriia resource centre site, and will definitely be getting some of the upgrades, the mast, booms and sails in particular. Once again, thanks for everyone's help. Now to start saving...
Breytac - just wondering. You live in Qld. From what I've seen on the net most people up your way are sailing bigger boats. Like A Class, Marblehead, 10 Raters and IOMs. You want to buy a Victoria [8|]. A small boat at 780mm length. Costs $199 PLUS radio gear and sail servo. So that's about another $130. From memory the upgrades are a new mast and sails straight off. Guess that's another $120. And new rigging line, and ancillary bits... say $40. You're now looking at a spend of nearly $500 for a 780mm boat. And the Thunder Tiger MRP Victoria is rated as a beginners boat. Before you step-up to a "real" rc sailboat. My first boat was 750mm in length. I was happy with it for about ½ an hour. First time on the water, guy arrived at the lake with a 1m Kyosho Seawind which he had paid $200 for on ebay. It killed my boat on handling, speed, and FUN. It was a much better boat to sail. One of my boats is an MRP 1m Voyager. I paid $110 for it. Also from ebay. With all my upgrades and radio gear, HiTec HS-645MG sail servo it still has only cost me just over $500 all up. The IOM mast, booms and rigging alone cost me $280. This boat flies now and handles like a dream. I personally would not go for a boat less than 1m in length [8D]. Bigger boats are easier to sail. They can withstand stronger winds and the upgrades cost the same. If I were you I'd keep my eye out on ebay. Lots of boats for sale in Qld. But DO NOT buy one of those cheap Chinese boats. I recently saw a 10R in Qld for sale on ebay at $600 with radio etc. Larry L.
