RE: Fiberglassing center wing section...
I have never fiberglassed a wing center section and I always thought from reading the forums that you have to use a resin like "West Systems" resin or some other equivalent resin. This is the first time that I have heard using 30 minute regular epoxy. Well that is certainly good news since I always have 30 minute epoxy handy..........and I have yet to buy any finish resin or equivalent. I have done minor repairs to car plastic parts with used airbag cloth and epoxy and it turns out to be very strong. This is very, very good news for me...............the 30 minute epoxy application part. Thanks larry

RE: Best low rpm/high efficiency prop choice
I am an auto mechanic for 39 years and gasoline engines need to rev up to the maximum torque output to be as efficient as possible when carrying a heavy load(a big propeller). The RPM at maximum horsepower will be bad for your fuel consumption while hauling a load. The RPM at maximum torque is where you have the best fuel consumption at the greatest load hauling ability. Torque and horsepower are two different things and when it comes to hauling a maximum load at the least fuel consumption(what we call efficiency) ............ then you want to look at the torque values............not the horsepower. Your best bet for a low RPM, high torque engine is a long stroke gasoline engine or better yet.....a diesel engine. You cannot put a heavy load(a big propeller) on a gasoline engine and run it at a low RPM..........this is called stalling/lugging the gas engine and will result in severe overheating. You will have a damaged gas engine in short order. 'Nuff said. Thanks and God Bless, always larry

RE: maintaining the vitality of a club
Every month, there should be regularly a fun fly fiesta with flight simulator and actual hands on buddy cord flight instruction for those kids as well as adults who are curious about the sport. Some may just want to try first on a simulator as they are familiar with Gaming Consoles. We may not win them instantly................but the seeds of joy and fascination have been planted...............and will someday burst out of the fertile ground and bear fruit as new members in the RC airplane sport. The idea is to..............plant the seed and in due season there will be a harvest. If they never put a hand on a simulator or fly the plane on a buddy cord..............then they will not even have a glimmer of the satisfaction and joy that is in the RC airplane sport. The key is planting the seed of joy in their hearts. It is a numbers game...............as only a fraction of those initiated will eventually be lifelong RC airplane flyers. RE: Reviving a LI ION battery??!
I had a 3S Lipo airplane that got stuck in a tree for 2 weeks with the receiver turned on. It drained the Lipo completely when I recovered it. I read in some online help forum to put the 3S Lipo on a Nicad/NimH charger until the voltage reached the 10.5 volts minimum that the 3S Lipo/Li Ion charger will recognize and then finish it on a balance Lipo/Li Ion charger. You have to watch constantly the voltage going up(you need a voltmeter for this) when it is hooked up to the Nicad/NimH charger as it has no cut-off voltage and will overcharge and burn up the Lipo. I also charge my Lipo batteries outside in the cement driveway inside a clay flowerpot so as to be safe in case the Lipo is overcharged and catches fire. I successfully recovered/re-charged the lost Lipo and I have been using it for over a year now with NO PROBLEMS.........but you have to be checking constantly with the voltmeter as you recharge with the Nicad/NimH charger to prevent overcharging and burning up the lipo. RE: maintaining the vitality of a club
Like GrayBeard said..........it is a tight race for attention...........RC cars/trucks(buggy and truggy), TV, internet social networking sites, CD's on rock music, rap music, Ipods, Gaming Consoles, Easy/casual real sex among the teens today, Shopping Malls everywhere, skateboards, drugs, etc. etc...............while those are easy and accessible inside the home entertainment and just out the front door in your street activity(skateboards).....................RC airplanes demand a different venue..............lots of open space..........and if it is those noisy internal combustion engines..............you need wide, wide open spaces far away from easily disturbed neighbors...............not to mention the effort and skill to assemble, adjust, trim the airplane, tune the engine, and the expense...............Oh!! this is an expensive hobby................the airplane, radio, engine, fuel, RC tools, glues you have to pay for............and then after that you have to find a good flying buddy to be comfortable with while he is teaching you how to fly. The hump to overcome to get started......the hill to climb to learn and maintain this hobby is just too much disincentive for today's laid back, computer addicted, internet social networking, sex indulgent, toy spoiled teenagers of today's entertainment overstuffed teenager..................and drugs too!!! Our RC airplane hobby is attractive only to the flight fascinated teenager................the others who are only marginally interested we can still try to reach out and hopefully bond to our RC airplane hobby. If there are fewer and fewer RC airplane enthusiasts........then the city councils will start converting our RC fields to golf courses. It could be a diminishing sport due to the intense competition. RE: 360 deg. turn by jets banked almost 90 deg....How?
At a 5g turn the 30,000 lb. F-18A(with fuel) is exerting a flying load on the wings and other lifting surfaces equal to 150,000 lbs. of force. How about 10g....it would be a flying load of 300,000 lbs. on a tight turn. It is staggering the amount of load the airframe is carrying. Fighter planes are truly a marvel of engineering..............so again the question of how does the jet fighter keep flying in a 360 degree turn without losing altitude with the jet fighter practically standing on one wing almost at 90 degrees. It seems the really clear definitive answer is yet to come...........perhaps from some military fighter pilot reading and responding in this forum. larry

RE: Where are all the Sig planes
The Japanese benefitted from the imposition of American military rule under Gen. Douglas MacArthur................MacArthur genuinely cared about the Japanese welfare and did everything in his power as Supreme Military Commander to impose educational programs to benefit the Japanese. W. Edwards Deming taught the Japanese "Statistical Quality Control" and Dr. Joseph Duran taught the Japanese "Total Quality Control" and the Japanese were quick studies and in the 1950's began a turnaround from junk Japanese products to finely machined and well engineered products with the quality control learned from American educators.........................The Communist Chinese and the Communist Vietnamese have no such benefactors as Gen. MacArthur, W. Edwards Deming, Dr. Joseph Duran and many, many other American educators/administrators who labored genuinely to improve Japanese industry. The Communist Chinese and Communist Vietnamese have a very slow start to gaining quality control because they are under corrupt local government officials. They will probably never catch up to Japanese, American or Western Europe standards of quality. The arrival of computerized manufacturing machines helped the Communists improve their product quality.....but still they are cutting corners in gluing, hand fitting and using quality hardwood for their ARF airplanes and manufacturing poor quality metal parts for their engine bearings, spark plugs etc.......and that shows in the poor flying strength of their ARF's. Their cheap labor cost is their main marketing advantage and poor quality is a way for them to increase their profit margin. 'Nuff said. Thanks larry

RE: Where are all the Sig planes
The low cost Chinese & Vietnamese labor wages are killing the high wage European and American manufacturers.......not only in RC but also in electronics and computers. This will be the pattern for the next dozen years until the offshore wage payscale rise up and become like the Japanese labor cost. Japan started in the 1950's and 1960's as low wage manufacturers but eventually their wage scale caught up and now is higher than the American wage scale. However the high quality of Japanese products keeps the American consumer buying Toyotas, Nissans etc. The Chinese & Vietnamese will be low wage producers for a long time to come. 'Nuff said. RE: How does your wife deal with your RC airplane hobby?
My wife does not oppose my RC hobby(planes and heli). However, when the house is looking like a hangar at the airport, once in a while she will say......."What are these airplanes!!......good golly!!!!". But that is as far as her complaint will go. She tolerates the hobby.......but has no interest......except once in a while I will bring her to a Jet Rally and then she is fascinated by these model turbines with the scale pilots sitting in the cockpits. She does not complain about the amount of money I spend in the hobby......although she earns twice the amount that I earn. I have temporarily stopped buying airplanes because the house and the garage is crowded with airplanes still in unopened boxes(40+ unopened boxes in ARF, RTF, electric, glow and gasoline powered). It is an addiction and she chooses to ignore the amount of money that I spend on it.....although if she chooses to, she could put her foot down and put a stop to it. She is heaven on earth. Married 32 years & two grown lovely daughters. The Good Lord is really, really good. God Bless, always. larry

RE: TWIN, INLINE, DUCTED FAN'S = TWICE THE TAILPIPE VELOCITY?
Duke "Aero65" Chung, You are correct. It was called the Force Air 1. It had a clear "see through" housing and it had two impellers with a stator blade in the middle. The first time I saw it was a small advertisement in an RC magazine. That was it. I never heard from it again. The concept of accelerating the air mass twice with 2 impellers looked promising with the goal of higher efflux velocity. However, we all know that impeller blades create drag as they spin thru the air. So the 2 impeller blades are creating TWICE the drag. The ugly monster called INEFFICIENCY consumes/wastes horsepower. So the twin impellers may be theoretically pushing the air mass at a higher speed but at the same time the twin impellers are WASTING HORSEPOWER. The wasted horsepower will show up in higher fuel consumption because a bigger engine will be required to overcome the horsepower wasted..............which brings us back to square one......................where we are looking for a faster efflux velocity with the same horsepower consumption which demands that we use a single impeller for efficiency. That is why with all the research all over the world by top minds and top talent..................we only see a single impeller on ducted fans powered by an electric motor or by a glow engine. We want to push the air mass without wasting horsepower which is best done with a single impeller. With axial flow turbojets.............it is a different matter because we want to increase the compression at ignition to produce the maximum horsepower expelling the air mass at highest velocity. Increasing the compression can only be done by using multiple turbine blades in sequential stages separated by stator blades to stop the air mass from spinning and re-directing the spin energy into backward flow to hit the next turbine blade at the correct angle for maximum efficiency.................'nuff said. Thanks. larry

RE: After Run Oil or not?
Marvel Mystery oil is not as good as Marvel Air Tool oil in rust preventative. Marvel Air Tool oil is much, much better in rust preventative. Automatic transmission fluid is also a good rust preventative. So is gun oil like Hoppes or Outers or Remington in a spray can. The cheapest is automatic transmission fluid. WD-40 and Marvel Mystery oil are not so good in rust preventative. Thanks larry

RE: Engine Noise - Crackling
I am an automotive technician for 39 years and in an auto engine......the crackling or popping sound means pre-ignition knock or the fuel mixture is detonating in the combustion chamber instead of a normal combustion. Like suggested already, the mixture could be too lean once the engine/propeller combo unloads(speeds up) in flight. Flight rpm is higher than ground rpm due to the unloading of the propeller once in flight.....resulting in leaning out of the fuel mixture.........resulting in detonating(crackling/popping) sound because the leaning out of the mixture is conducive to detonation in the combustion chamber. If this detonating continues it could blow a hole in your piston or wreck your engine. Try richening your ground rpm by reducing your peak ground rpm by 500 rpm by richening the high speed mixture screw. larry

RE: pusher vs. tractor
Gentlemen, With all the research done and being done on very high tech military and commercial propeller driven aircraft, it is the overwhelming predominance that the choice by a huge majority is the "TRACTOR" propeller configuration. This alone says something about "EFFICIENCY" of the tractor configuration since military and commercial aircraft are always focusing on efficiency for speed and range. It is must be the "clean" air encountered by the tractor prop versus the "dirty" air (airframe induced turbulence) encountered by the pusher prop. The prop is a very high speed airfoil and it thrives on clean air hitting the prop blades for maximum efficiency. The monstrous B-36 bomber and the UAV Predator are the notable pusher military designs that went into full production for the military. Everything else are tractor props including the fastest propeller driven WWII fighter which is the XP-47J with a top speed of 505 mph. Tractor props dominate in both military and commercial designs due to inherent efficiency and ease of airframe accomodating the forward mounted engine. Thanks larry

Stumax SM110-52 edf claims a turbine sound?
I came across a video of a Stumax SM110-52 edf powered jet and the sound was more of a turbine on low power than the sound of a screeching EDF. Has anybody flown the Stumax SM110-52? What is the consensus on the turbine like sound? Is it worth the big bucks that Stumax wants for that sound? On the Stumax website, the edf is a 12 blade fan and Stumax claims this is what gives a low powered turbine swoosh sound. Any Stumax fliers want to add any input? Thanks larry

RE: Official speed record for propeller RC planes?
Like I have mentioned earlier, if it is a speed racer dropped from a mothership and then flown horizontally for the speed runs in a continuos turn around the visible area of the pilot, then the need for take-off lift is eliminated and the wings could just be thin, stubby, little wings...............sort of like a flying dart and for the high speed turns to be negotiated then the body has to be designed to be a lifting body of some sort so that the very heavy centrifugal force around the high speed turn could be negotiated. Just daydreaming and musing from a non-engineer, non-aerodynamicist, non-speed freak modeler. Just a daydreamer...............that's who I am. Thanks. larry

Official speed record for propeller RC planes?
I seem to not come across the official speed record for propeller driven RC planes.,,,,,,,,anybody has the certified speed record? On a second note......how fast are these pylon racers going? ...........If you could release a prop driven racer ala X-1 just like those stubby winged record holders dropped from a B-29 or a B-52 mothership so that the wings will be thin and stubby and small(no need for take-off lift as it is dropped from a mothership just like the Mac Hodges giant scale B-29 with the small stubby winged airplane slung under the wing) then it should be possible to really go super fast..............and don't turn like a pylon racer but rather go up in a climb and do a U-turn at the apex of the climb and then dive down to the deck for the horizontal speed run.........................maybeeeeeee it will exceed 250 mph in level flight as it zooms on the deck??? larry
