RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
Back about 3 years ago when I was ordering a bunch of stuff from Tower Hobbies..............the items, products, merchandise ALWAYS came in a well protected box with those bubble wrap protectors and sometimes with those brown stuffing paper...............but the shipment ALWAYS came in well protected...........so I have NO bad experience with Tower Hobbies.....so far. Are some people experiencing bad packaging because Tower is swamped with orders and cannot keep up............I wonder why some packaging from Tower Hobbies is haphazard and some packaging(like my orders from Tower Hobbies) were well protected and well packaged. RE: Setting motor position
Yup.........that wood box motor mount sure looks like setup for an electric motor which produces less vibration than a glow motor. The KitBuilder is correct that the wood box motor mount needs to be beefed up/braced up with wood triangle stock glued with epoxy to the wood box motor mount at load bearing areas. 'Nuff said.

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
The last time I ordered from Tower Hobbies was about 3 years ago..........they were order after order in the span of one year and all the orders came in correctly itemized and accounted for and the shipping containers/packing were very well done and secure. Those multiple orders totalled around $5,000+ and I was a happy camper. I don't know why some orders are not being packed securely. If this is a recurring issue............Tower has to fix it quickly or else customers will flee to Horizon, etc. I guess when you have a business it is always quality control, quality control and pricing and pricing. 'Nuff said. P.S. I am still a loyal Tower customer. I like their prices and their great catalog with the technical specifications. Can't beat it.

RE: Which (chinese) facctories make various brands of ESC ..?
DrMotor, On occasion I also am intrigued as to which factory supplies the product offered by the retailer.................in a way it is useful because as you pointed out the Hacker 70A ESC is over 100 bucks($109.99) and the Turnigy 70A ESC is $28.73...............and the question is..................(HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT FOLKS)....................ARE WE REALLY GETTING ALMOST 4 TIMES THE VALUE when we pay $109.99 instead of $28.73.................I work in the car rental industry and our rental vehicle prices fluctuate depending upon market demand..............sometimes the difference between a high demand season compared to a slow season for the same car make and model is over a hundred dollars a day. The car rental industry, the airlines, car dealer, RC Hobby retailer all will try to charge as high as the market can bear............this includes re-branding the same item to raise the perception of higher value when deep under the skin it is all the same product but the business owner is able to charge higher because of PERCEPTION OF VALUE...nothing more(same product, same model, same function). Now in the case of Apple Inc. they have a very high standard of quality and are very demanding from the supplier to maintain that high level of quality and therefore Apple is able to command premium prices. In my personal opinion although Apple has a very high quality level IT IS STILL OVERPRICED. Perception of value allows Apple to price it's products very high. It is probably not too far away in quality as the next competitive computer company but the perception is that Apple has a higher quality therefore they will charge more. 'Nuff said.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
Oh!!! I did not realize that those were picnic tables..........my bad..........I thought those were part of the pit/worktables. I have been there many, many times but I did not realize those were picnic tables. Goes to show that I was paying attention to the RC planes and not the furniture. Again those super leafy trees are amazing. The shady branches stretch way, way outside the trunk and it is like a giant umbrella. Thanks for the heads up info. 'Nuff said.

Kmot, In one of your June 1989 photo it looks like there is roof on every table in the pit area??? Is that what it is??? At present are those roofs still there for every table??? I went there at the 2012 L.A. Jets and I don't remember the roofs on every table.....but those super shady trees are super nice with the moisture the leaves release to cool the air under the branches. It really has that nice cooling effect. 'Nuff said.

Looks like the muffler pressure nipple is clogged up and when you open the throttle wide open the engine responds but because of the clogged muffler pressure nipple the engine eventually starts to lean out and then dies...............just a guess of course and my 2 cents. 'Nuff said.

RE: Hobby King Warranties?
There will always be "unhappy customers" in whatever business...............HobbyKing is NOT for everybody.........................Their prices are a bargain and they have some junk items but also a lot of good items. Like a lot of "happy customers" say, just work with the retailer and see if you can come up with a solution that will fix the situation. Sure there will be times when the warranty will be refused flat out..........but the savings overall if you order a lot of stuff in this hobby are worth it.............Then we have the "unhappy customer" i.e. the postman or parcel service crushes the merchandise box but they will still blame the retailer, also they should know from the reviews that it is a junk item and they still order the junk item and expect it to work (yes the reviews are there to read and both positive and negative reviews are there, the "unhappy customer" claims that the negative reviews are edited out but I read the reviews before I order and I find a lot of negative reviews on the junk items and they are NOT edited out, so the negative reviews are there for you to be forewarned), then there are those that expect a retailer in Hongkong to pay for return shipping (hey just ask for a store credit or tell your credit card company that you dispute the charges due to defective item and that the warranty is being denied) etc. etc. The world will always have the "unhappy people" and then there are those customers that will work around with a solution that they can accept and then move on without getting stuck in a rut about the poor customer service or the horrible warranty or lack of warranty. Another problem with bargain retailers is that Nitroplanes sells the same airplane ARF model but with 2 different manufacturers, the ones made by CMP(China Model Productions) have a decent quality for a cheap ARF....but Nitroplanes also sells what I call CMP clones made by a different factory and those CMP clones are HORRIBLE in quality and construction. I noticed the different manufacturers by looking at the add very closely and the pictures have a slight difference in the trim decals. Nitroplanes is lacking in that they are not informing the customer that the model is a CMP clone and is done by a different manufacturer and the unsuspecting customer will order thinking that it is a CMP model when it is actually a CMP clone. Well with all this bargain retailers, the customer has to read the reviews and read and research the online forums because the bargain retailer will sell junk stuff along with the good stuff. When you do the research then the customer can separate the junk stuff from the good stuff and order accordingly. As with everything..........it is "BUYER BEWARE".............or if you are a newbie and don't know the junk stuff from the good stuff then by all means just order from Tower Hobbies or Horizon Hobbies or Hobby People. They will back up their items with excellent warranties and you will be a happy camper. As for people like me who can tell the junk from the good stuff..........HobbyKing and Nitroplanes serve a purpose as bargain retailers that I can use. 'Nuff said. P.S. Yes I will not blame the retailer if the postman or the parcel service crushes or damages the merchandise box. I know the postman or the parcel service have been caught on camera and they are on youtube video caught redhanded tossing the merchandise box like a bowling ball.

RE: Camarillo, CA Channel Islands Condors Field Closure
It is just a fact of life that LiPo's and Jet Turbines are prone to catching fire in a severe crash..........combined with the dry brush conditions in Southern California hillsides.................well it is a risk that a major brushfire could erupt if strong wind conditions fan the flames and with the dry brush as tinder wood fuel................. a major brush fire that devastated a big part of San Diego homes in the hillsides and also a huge brush fire that burned down Malibu million dollar homes in the Malibu hillsides a few years back is an ever present risk. The State Fire Marshall is not ignorant of this ongoing risks. Here in the Metropolitan L.A. County area, the flying fields are located in flood control drainage channels operated by the County or the City as parklands and with a flying field embedded in the pakland(i.e. Santa Fe Dam flying field, Chino park flying field???, Whittier Narrows flying field, Sepulveda Basin Apollo flying field and the Santa Clarita Flying field). Once the Fire Marshall and the University people dig in their heels knowing that a hillside brush fire is an ever present risk.................it might be time to contact the Ventura County Parks Department to embed a flying field in a suitable County Parkland. RE: Sepulveda Basin
Corn field, sod farm, U-control paved circle way out there by the intersection of Burbank blvd. and Woodley ave., NO TOILETS, no LiPo electric flyers, no 2.4 ghz radios, no turbine jets just those glow powered ducted fan that were screechingly noisy.........and if you guys remember there were trees at the edge of the flight path as you take off down the runway heading towards the direction of the Sepulveda Dam. Somebody removed those trees because when I learned to fly at the basin in 1979 those trees were still there. The pit area was oven hot because there were no big shady trees yet shading the pit area. It was just open space. No gas engines either and Hobby People was Hobby Shack. I learned to fly on the foam Cessna 150 with a Thunder Tiger .25. I believe that those foam ARF's were made by Sureflite?????? In those days, K&B, Super Tiger(Italy), HB they ruled the roost in premium engines in those days. Those were the days when you had American made radios, servos, batteries, engines etc. etc. I never thought that the Chinese will rule the RC world. 'Nuff said.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
The rules are posted on the helipad fence............when you walk from the airplane pit area to the helipad fence you will see the signs that says "NO FLYING IN THE GRASS"................meaning the helicopters are supposed to stay within the round paved helipads.........................the quadcopter is a helicopter with 4 rotor blades. There are also rules posted in the Billboard as you enter the center of the pit area coming from the parking lot. The rules are posted on that billboard that says "NO RC FLYING ON THE U-CONTROL FIELD". The U-Control field is the fenced round paved area next to the parking lot across from the airplane pit area. The rules on the billboard also says "NO FLYING OVER THE GOLF COURSE". The billboard also has a diagram of the RC airplane airspace, the helicopter airspace and the U-Control airspace. Safety and common sense rules to stay within those designated airspaces or else we risk hitting a car or a person in case of a malfunction or pilot error or shift in strong wind direction. Stay within those designated airspaces for your type of aircraft/helicopter/quadcopter/U-control and you are OK. If not, sooner or later somebody will come up to you and tell you to refrain from violating the designated airspace. 'Nuff said.

RE: cessna 182 Control surfaces
Are you referring to the corrugated appearance on the control surfaces on the Cessna??? Isn't that going to increase drag???? Any increase in external surface exposed to the airstream will increase drag......yes?? no??? Well those aeronautical engineers must have tested those on the wind tunnels and the drag factor must have come out OK or they would not use them................actually on the RC Cessna models they really look good as they accentuate the control surfaces and give a nice touch to the appearance. RE: 24 Hour On Line Support Hobby King
Yes, absolutely..............there are great online retailers right here in the good ol' U.S.A. that sell great stuff at great prices.................I bought a lot of stuff at Tower Hobbies since I like there prices especially on sale or on promo discounts. Also Tower has that very nice specifications info on the items that they sell...........especially good info on the engines. Yes, Tower Hobbies is right up there in good internet catalog info, good sale prices and even when not on sale the prices are still good, excellent customer service and gazillions of items that are available on their online catalog. Horizon Hobbies I have also bought some items but I like Tower Hobbies the best of all U.S. based retailers. I think Tower Hobbies beat them all hands down. With all that said.............you could still save a ton of money on overseas (Hongkong based) retailers simply because they are closer to the main manufacturing base (China) and the stuff like brushless motors price wise are unbeatable. Lots of other stuff too. Again because they are across the Pacific.....you would have to pry open the warranty with a crowbar to get them to warranty the stuff they sell. Just be aware that the risk of bad customer service and bad warranty is there and plan very carefully your purchases and hopefully you come out OK. I have......so far. 'Nuff said.

RE: 24 Hour On Line Support Hobby King
The last time I ordered from Hobby King and also from Tower Hobbies was about 2-3 years ago. My garage is filled to the rafters of ARF's still in boxes unbuilt. The total dollar amount of the stuff combined from Hobby King and from Tower Hobbies that I have ordered are over $10,000 accumulated over 4 years from 2006 to 2010. I have never received a crushed, broken or damaged ARF box from Hobby King or from Tower Hobbies...............I had a run of good luck with UPS and FedEx I suppose. The brushless motors, servos, engines, LiPo's, chargers, etc. etc. I received from Hobby King were in good condition and they all worked OK. One LiPo came in puffed(that is what it looked like to me) and I never used it to be safe. I read the reviews before I order and I do not order new stuff but wait a year before ordering new offerings so the bugs will be worked out on the new offerings. I read the "notice" that in my long list of items ordered there is one or two that are backordered and they will hold the entire order until the backordered item is back in the inventory. Once I had to wait 3 months before that single backordered item came in and only then did they ship the entire order and I knew that from the "notice" when I was filling up the cart. Since I agreed to hold the entire order until the backordered item came in, the 3 month delay was OK with me at that particular time. One time they sent me the wrong propeller and when I e-mailed the error they just gave me credit as I was not going to send it back all the way to Hongkong. That is fine with me too as I used the credit for some other item. I am very much aware of the long distance shipping expense in returning items so getting credit is OK with me. So far Hobby King has NOT screwed me YET...........................I believe those who post that they were screwed by Hobby King on items they ordered..................So far Lady Luck is still with me. Oh I have also ordered from some other Hongkong retailer and the same policy applies of offering to give credit instead of shipping all the way across the Pacific the unsatisfactory item. The moral of the story is............BEWARE Hobby King and all these overseas retailers is NOT for everybody........................Tower Hobbies will serve you well if you find the overseas retailers hard to deal with on warranty and customer service....................As for me, in the end I saved a TON of money on the items I ordered from Hobby King and to that I say I did well.............so far. I am not a competition flyer, just a run of the mill sport flyer, I don't want to mortgage the house to afford this hobby so I use the overseas bargain retailers and also Tower Hobbies as they have very good promo discounts and sale items. The prices are very good at Tower Hobbies when they do the sale items. I refuse to let this hobby become an aggravation and I just find myself with a run of good luck dealing with the retailers.....................even with Wholesale Trains when one time I ordered from them the Dual Ace, engines and servos.............well that is another story. 'Nuff said. P.S. When I e-mail or phone the retailer I am always polite and explain in a very clear manner the situation and then I listen to how the retailer wants it to be resolved...............you know what I don't have to fight with the retailer because I can always dispute the unsatisfactory sale with Paypal and then I have a recourse on whether the retailer gets paid or NOT. See with credit card purchase it is not a lost cause.

RE: 24 Hour On Line Support Hobby King
All these complaints/put downs/negative reports regarding Hobby King customer service(or lack thereof), hard to navigate warranty(if any) really is serving a purpose...............the retailer really has to upgrade customer service/warranty etc. if it is to remain competitive in an increasingly crowded online marketplace. Looks like Hobby King is moving in the right direction regarding customer service...............the jury is still out on this one................we will see if it will reduce the wave of complaints regarding lack of customer service...............Hopefully it will as we need bargain retailers for most of us who cannot afford to crash a gazillion dollar turbine jet or a giant scale prop plane..............it is one thing to invest in expensive airplanes and it is another thing to lose it in the inevitable crash. Bargain retailers are here to stay because this flying hobby is so crash prone and could wipe out a gazillion dollar investment in the blink of an eye. The bargain hunters outnumber the gazillion dollar high flyer any day. 'Nuff said.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
Ed, Actually, the brush fire from that crashed jet did everybody a favor...................the brush was growing taller every year and it was just a fire hazard if a lit cigarette was tossed carelessly. Also it was getting difficult to walk through all the tall brush to search for a downed plane. This is also located in Southern California which is prime rattlesnake country............so it was good riddance to burn all that overgrown brush just like the Forest Service do in a controlled burn. The Sepulveda Basin flying field (Apollo XI Flying Field) is in the middle of a giant park bordered by roads and the houses/buildings are a mile away so they are safe from the brush fire. So it was a good thing that the brush fire happened............the Parks and Recreation Department of Los Angeles City should have been bulldozing the overgrown brush every 2 years anyway. Live Wire, You are exactly right!!!!..................you see, the Hobby King bashers/chimers that pop up with 3rd party bad news about Hobby King are REALLY DOUBLE AGENTS connected to the marketing department of Hobby King................These bashers/chimers keep the pot going with the name of HOBBY KING right in the middle........................they are DOUBLE AGENTS of the Hobby King Marketing Department...........................they are commanded to stir up the pot so that around the world the people are curiousity driven to open up the Hobby King website and VOILA!!!!!!!!! the people discover Hobby King and start ordering online............it is a gimmick by the chimers/bashers to bring more customers world wide to Hobby King. These chimers/bashers are the UNDERGROUND PROMOTERS of Hobby King...............beware you have been forewarned they are commanded to get people to be curious about Hobby King and start browsing and ordering. LOOK OUT and WATCH OUT for these chimers/bashers with 3rd party bad news. Of course there are those genuine customers of Hobby King that have legitimate complaints and suffered from very, very poor customer service and very, very difficult warranty procedure(if at all).....these are the legitimate complaints and it seems there are a lot of these but on the other hand..........there are those chimers/bashers who have not ordered anything and just speak from 3rd party bad news repeating/echoing what others already said. RE: Fuel Flow Problemo
When you choke the carburetor mouth with your finger and then flip the propeller......does the suction effect draw fuel???? can you see the fuel moving in the clear fuel line???? does your carburetor become wet with fuel???? If the answer is YES, then the fuel line clunk and the fuel line are OK (if there is a small air leak in the fuel line or the carburetor or the engine crankcase, the fuel will still be drawn when you choke the carburetor throat)..........if the fuel is being drawn when you choke the carburetor mouth then the next thing to check is if the fuel hole in the carburetor spray bar is pointing downwards and is at the center of the carburetor throat. This can be visually checked when the carburetor is removed from the engine and then looking from the bottom of the carburetor the hole in the spray bar should be pointing directly to the bottom opening of the carburetor. Then if everything is OK, the engine has to be spun with a starter to see if the fuel is being drawn. 'Nuff said.

RE: Screwed by HobbyKing
Keyman in post no.50 hit the nail on the head..............and I quote Keyman "1 last thing I will not fight with any vendor basher here anymore as most of these fights are not really worthy of someone of my Caliber, I would rather posts facts of items I believe it or have actual use with. "....................it is really good when someone with a bad experience with HobbyKing or ANY other bargain retailer posts his/her complaints and then post the facts of the case behind the complaint so that others may be forewarned about the risks of buying from these bargain retailers...................HOWEVER what muddles the issue is when people post bashing comments when they have not bought from the retailer at issue, without having actually ordered items from the retailer, the chimers/bashers are really talking 3rd party news or repeating/echoing what somebody else said. Lets hear the complaints from those who actually ordered and have been shafted by the retailer(s) and there are many complaints from sub-standard merchandise to non-existent or barely existent warranty because these bargain retailers will fight tooth and nail to preserve their margin of profits.................and l am intelligent enough to filter out the genuine aggravated/shafted customer(and there are plenty) from those who have not ordered but chime in/bash in just to feel good that they have bashed somebody today even if what they say is just echoing/repeating 3rd party news. DON'T ORDER from these bargain retailers because the warranty will be tough to crack and some of the merchandise are junk.............but on the other hand if you can discriminate the good stuff from the junk stuff and if you are ready to fight tooth and nail to have them honor the warranty, then sure they provide a service to people who know how to order from these bargain retailers. These bargain retailers ARE NOT FOR EVERYBODY.........be forewarned, THEY PROVIDE VERY, VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE but there are good items in their inventory that are cheap and work good and then there are also junk............know what to buy before you order or you will have a HobbyKing sized headache. Sorry I confused your case with another flyer who stored his airplane for 2 years and then will not start in the airplane but will start when engine is removed and installed in a bench run.... sounds like your on/off fuel draw problem is that your CLUNK fell off.......................or there is a very small air leak in the fuel system that the choke can overcome but once the choke is removed the tiny air leak prevents fuel from being drawn to the carburetor......................'Nuff said. .....................to test the ignition system under compression load, use an automotive spark plug with a factory recommended .060" gap to test the spark quality under simulated compression(usually a spark plug for a 1990 to the present Chevrolet engine has a .060" gap)..............leave this automotive spark plug outside the engine and then connect your spark plug cable to this spark plug and then turn the propeller swiftly and see if the spark jumps thru the .060" gap.................if it does then the ignition system is OK even under compression load.....next to check is the fuel delivery..........................drop a few drops of fuel into the carburetor mouth and then try to start the engine..........if the engine starts and then dies out after a few seconds then you have no fuel being delivered to the carburetor...............you could have a bad carburetor diaphragm or an air leak in the fuel line from the fuel tank preventing the carburetor from sucking up fuel.......or a clogged fuel filter or the clunk inside the fuel tank could have fallen off and now the fuel line inside the fuel tank is not submerged in the fuel and that is why the engine starts in the bench but not in the plane because you use a DIFFERENT FUEL TANK IN THE BENCH TEST...................................Larry.
