RE: Doss Steed's Mustang Update
It just looks vary home made and the screws are so small on the torque links. Its a real work of art but I dont think it will take a lot of landings before something snaps off. The springs are too short and dont push the piston all the way down. It seems like if it did the strut would pull apart because the piston is short. maybe I dont have all the parts. The gear door arms are made of resion. I see some guys on here have them made of Dicast aluminum. I still think if I fy it it should have Serria gear in it because I want to keep the Steed Stuff looking like new for show. So two wings sound like a good Idea for now till I get more info on what I just bought. The rest of the stuff is still on the way from Steve so I hope nothing gets broken during shipment. Bob can you give me a quick history lesson on this project. I fly out at Dick Watz place and he is a vary good friend. His son Eric and I have had lots of fun over the years flying Giant Cardens together but as of last year we finaly made the jump to scale with Dick watching in glee. He said we came to the dark side LOL This plane will be my show bird once done. My flyers are Top flight for everyday bashing around for now but I have a Valliy FW190 and a Ziroli Bearcat on the shelf. But now the Steed is my main intrest. . I have some pics.

RE: Doss Stead P-51 Mustang
Hi I just bought a Doss Mustang kit complete! I got it here on RCU it has the glass Link this word and every other one like it in our forum to YOUR Website! fuse and all the parts gear and all plan's and even polaroid photos of Doss's plane in his shop during the build. This was a jackpot of a find and the guy I got it from is a real nice person. It was his dads kit and was friends with Doss from what I can tell by all the suff that is here. I want to build this plane and make it the nicest possable. Can any of you guys tell me about the landing gear. I have both mains with the cylinders. They look a little weak for flying but look nice for scale displaying. Has anybody flown this plane with Doss's landing gear on it? I want to use them but Serria looks much stronger but not as scale as these.I have been thinking of building two wings one for show with the Doss gear and one for flying using Serria gear built into it. Sounds Model buildng nuts. nuts but I dont want to break anything on the Doss Gear by flying them.

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
I hope not to have 5 pounds of balist weight in the plane! But will see. As I keep adding more stuff aft of the CG point I'm starting to worry. I bought some Powered steel to use for my balist. I'm going to mix it into epoxy then poor it into the cowl ring area. this will put the weight as fare forward as possable and hopfuly reduce the amount of weight needed overall. the spit and the ME 109 both have problems with the nose over thing. I hope comp arf moved the main gear enough to help with this problem. I'm going to move the CG 1/2" forward of the book and try it there at first and let the flight testing tell the story. I can then remove or add some removable weights to get it where it needs to be as per flight testing. I would like to have it in the air by the end of MAY will see. Thanks CRASH PROOF for your info and your spit looks vary nice.

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
The guy I talked to at Toledo at Nick Zirolis booth has one and has flown it many times and told me after moving the Cg around to get the plane to fly without having the elevator to sensitive said he moved it a 1/2 inch forward of where the instructions say to put it. I'm just telling you this because I would rather have it a bit nose heavy on the first few flights rather than trying to get it back on the ground with a snapy elevator. Just an FYI thats all. I wouldnt trust the COMP ARF manual for more than a guide at best its not the bible. There's no comparision between the two planes. I'm sure the gear isnt even in the same locations so I wouldnt try to compare the way they fly or taxi VS. CG. Each one is different. The Ziroli plane has a bigger tail surfaces then the Comp ARF and thats just one differance. Brian from Dynamic Balsa is sending me new plastic to redue the cockpit. I'm doing it with no floor like the full size. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
ORIGINAL: Aussie Roo Thanks Kevin. A very revealing tale! And I hope kinda vindicates my hesitation at not immediately accepting the suggestion to move the CoG on the CARF Spit forward by 1/2 inch until someone who's actually flown one can give an explanation like you have. Thanks again and here's to many more happy landings with your Spitfire. Any chance you post a pic or three? Rupert
RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Your right!!! The cockpit has no floor. I may just forgo the floor concept and build it open like the real thing. I'm at a stand still now and must rethink this cockpit. I sent Brain a E-Mail with pics showing the problem. The Ziroli Spit has a deeper fuse area for some reason it fits in there better on there airplane. I could fake it but there is so much good stuff in this cockpit kit it would be a shame not to make it fit as cloes to right as possable. I think I can make it work. Well I guess I will work on the p-47 now and get it done so I can fly it next weekend weather permiting.
ORIGINAL: Chad Veich The wings on a full size Spitfire do not pass through the fuselage and the cockpit is full depth to the bottom fuselage skin. That's pretty hard to achieve on a model with a one piece wing. Basically your stuck trying to fake it by making it all fit above the wing or you will need to build some sort of pocket into the wing's center section.
RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Ok guys here's the scoop on the Dynamic Balsa cockpit. DONT SET THE FLOOR AT 6" like the directions say to. 7 1/4 is more where it needs to be. At 6" the rudder peddels hit the bottom of the bulhead where the instument panel mounts to. I cut all my big panels at 6" and dry fit the cockpit last night and now I have a BIG problem. My pilots legs wont fit under the instument panel.I,m calling Brian on Monday to tell him to change the instructions. I hope I can get new parts so I can move it down a inch or more. Also as a side note look at the last pic. You can see my Rudder and elevator servo tray back there. Now I must cut out a hatch on the belly to get in there to install and service the servos. AAAHHH ARF I think not. MORE WORK TO COME. I dont think going to 7 inches is going to work. Look at the Photo where the wing attachment fittings are. I'm running out of room to come down.

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Ya it will turn some heads when we get them done. I really screwed up at Toledo They had a 100" Spit mark ll on the table that was a Ziroli built bird and man it looked nice. I FORGOT MY CAMERA AHHHHH. The sliding Canopy is going to be a real pain in the A%&. But I said what the H!@# and Im going for it. I have a plan and Brian at Dynamic Balsa was a great help on pointing out a few simple things to make it work. The only thing with this Fiberglass airplane every time you cut a hole you have to reinforce around it. The fuse gets real twisty if you dont. Its a full monocot structure and needs all its surface to be strong. So as I go I need to follow up with more glass work and Wood in those areas. Now that the the cockpit is cut open you can really twist the fuse around. I will be glassing around the openings as soon as I finish fitting all the parts for the cockpit install. This cockpit just added a month at least to the finishing of this plane. But the results will be worth every penny. Once painted and fully weathed all the little things that are not "just Right" wont matter to the everyday modelers. Only the Die hard Scale builders will snub there noses to it. You can put brakes on the landing gear but I think it would help induce a nose over. The Spit Is a vary tipsy plane to start with. They moved the gear farther apart than what it was on the full scale to help for easier ground handling. It would be cool though I thought long and hard about it but decided this was not the project for that type of set up brakes that is. The term KISS keeps coming to mind. But its hard not to want ot throw the Kitchen sink at it. On the pics you can see the RED line I have drawn on the fuse that extends back from the cockpit top rail. That where the slider rail must be fitted into the fuse side. I cant cut that right now the back half of the cockpit would fall apart and lose its shape if I did. So I must wait till I have more work done Like gluing in the two Bulk heads in that area. Oh ya the cockpit floor is 6" from the top rail to the floor bottom for those who asked. Thats where Brian said to put it at and looks right to me.

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Vary Nice indeed!!!! Well guys sorry for the long delay on this great build thread but I did get back to working on the Spit after a few weeks of working on other stuff. Toledo was great and I talked to Andy Kane at COMP ARF's Booth and Also picked up Lots of stuff and Ideas to finish the Spit. I got my Cockpit From Brian At Dynamic Balsa and he was great showing me all the tricks to make it look good. I also talked to The Ziroli guys and one of them is flying the COMP ARF Spit and told me the CG is wrong in the Manual. He said to move it 1/2' forward from where it says to put it. I picked up the radiators from them as well. I have been working on the cockpit and must say its a lot of work and has 117 parts that make it up. There is lots of bulkheads and a cockpit floor that must be made from Lite ply.Now I Know why its $250.00 there is a ton of stuff in there!!!! So stay tuned as I dive back in for the finishline on this bird. Look at the pic where it shows the inside of the fuse. You can see where I had to cut the plywood former that the wing hold down is part of. It was in the way of the cockpit side walls. I will be glass reinforcing this and will show pics of it when done. I put extra glass in the tail and in the nose to make it stonger in the motor dome area and put in mount plates for my Batterys. I have lots more wood mounts going in the front. Plus I will by doing the sliding Canopy I got the parts to do it from Dynamic Balsa at theToledo show. More to come.

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
No not on this bird. I would like it but I have done all the work to this point and dont have any need to change it. The one I have will look fine and should give good performance. I'm still not completely sold on the in fuse set up yet for this plane. I would like to wait and see how it works out. You can do the R&D on that. It should be fine. Just remember that heat build up in the fuse can weaken the Epoxy glass and cause the rec. to lock out if the it gets to hot. I'm just worried about airflow in the fuse so I didnt go that route. I plan on maybe doing it in the Mustang as my next project. The Ty cockpit dosent have any of the bulkheads for the aft compartment but the price is hard to beat now you got me thinking???? Not bad for $80.00. The Dynamic Balsa one is much more detailed and true to scale. Look closer at both. Just depends on what level your going for. RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Well here is some of my progress from yesterday. I still need to tweek the lines a little so evrything is tight fitting. Today I'm going to pull the mains out and glass reinforce the mounts. Then start on the rudder Elevator and streeing servo install and move forward toward the engine install and start mounting all the goodies in the front of the fuse. I need to ordered the cockpit kit from Dynamic Balsa. Thats next! http://www.dbalsa.com/cockpits/z-spitfire.htm

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Mine came with an extension shaft. Check your packing in the box? Work has been slow on the spit I made the covers that close out the gear mount area. Glued in plywood in the tail for the screws to mount the belly covers on. Just trying to get back in the mood to work on the spit. I have the week off and thats what Im going to do.
ORIGINAL: Aussie Roo My prop extension from Sierra turned up today and it's just great, except there is nothing that extends the central shaft. Is that normal or has that been left out of the package? The long spinner bolt won't be long enough without some kind of extension to the central shaft.
