RE: oly 2 s and bird of time arf
More pictures there. Did a mock up of what she might look like. Right now im gettinng the spoilers figured out, in that how I want them to acuate and then its cover the open bays. Im really impressed with the stength of the fiberglass wings. Although there heavy. But im flying this model with a electric motor the medusa with a gear box, so if it sinks a minute or two before a lighter build, doesnt really matter. Anyway ill post weight gains next time.

What a job block sanding those wing panels. Anybody want to guess the weight? The symetrical wing adds to the diffaculties. But its nice and solid. Wont be putting a hole in the balsa skin with my finger while trying to put the wing together. Thats exactly what I did with my B> O> Time arf right off the bat.

RE: What servos to use?
I wouldnt use HS55 servo for nothing but a light load application. They strip real easy. I put them in my easy glider pro nd bumped the alerion lightly while I was building it. That HS55 turned to junk and I didnt even leave the house.

well one building tip there is to hold your wing tip in place on the wing and hold up against the light. I needed to do more sanding, in order to get the joint to close. Anyway have both halfs done. One stained and doing the staining on the other half right now. Next will be to fiberglass the wing. So here we go

RE: oly 2 s and bird of time arf
Well I lanched the B.O.T. eight times today, and had two bad landings. Not really bad, for they where all just before touchdown, while trying to land. The first flight was one of them, upon which the fuslage broke right behind the wings. A stress break, that wasnt all the way thru. So I ducktaped around it, and continued to fly it. Ill fix it later, might be able to fly it some more, if wheather holds up. I had one landing was coming in and the wind started to up lift the farthest wing. This was right above the ground again. But this thim i put in rudder, kept the glid path, and she left a skid in the grass 10ft long and straight as a arrow. That was a good feel there for me. Im learning pretty good actually. But the wind wasnt as strong as yesterday. Its really fun, and Im liking the high start more and more. Im not converting the bot to electric, For I like flying her off the high start. Anyway more pictures, second wing on the oly is coming along.

RE: oly 2 s and bird of time arf
Well I flew the bird of time off the highstart today. The wind whould pickup then settle back down then change directions and speed. Im just flying the bird of time for the secound time around. I can tell you that when you launch its so exciting. For one you get real nervous at time of release and more so when the plane flys off the high start. A couple of times I was thinking it was getting late about getting of the highstart and was wondering if it the highstart was going to fly my plane into the ground. Hey I did ok, sure had a blast. But I made some mistakes. For one I was afraid of stalling when flying into the wind And the bird of time will sure pickup speed going down wind. And I did stall her a coulple of times, she noses over into a dive then recovers a hour later. Anyway I also threw up my art hobbie and the wind came up and while I was trying to turn back into the wind she stalled and went in. Busted that wing perfectly along the center joint where I had epoxied together. And broke the rear plastic screw that holds the wing down. Anyway I reread while I was repairing the wing, the instructions. Step 16 says to put another layer of glass over the first. But its like not all that clear and I can see why I missed it. I also read a thread somewhere about how much more strenght that secound layer adds ,as far as strentgh. I do know one layer does not do it. I guess i learned a lesson today, pay closer attention to instructions and one aint enough. And fly sideways to the oncoming wind. Straight in the plane slowed way down to a stall, and going with Id say the bird of time was going atleast 60mph at one time. I was amazed at how fast the bird can change its speed. She also didnt want to land due to ground effect. Need spoilers

RE: Where do you buy a winch
Thanks brian, I appreciate that post. I read on the skegg site where he wont sell one assembled. Due to liability concerns. Im just wondering out loud if thats why there not so readily available. Bit it dont make sense, motors are dangerous gas eletric or etc. So why whould there be extra caution on a winch. Is there dangers Im not aware of. Has there been serious accidents in the past, followed by a lawsuit?

Forgot to add one I found on my own. That is thru rc soaring digest. But you have to call its not on there web site. Its a ford starter set up on a moving cart that has a swivel basket for the battery. Its pretty mobile, http://www.rcamodels.com/txtray_gateway.htmlile. So far thats it. Unless someone out there can add to this list. Is there any kits out there?

Also I used siggs stix glue, then ironed on the fiberglass cloth like monocoat. I then put on two coats sanded each coat, then a light coat of clear. The rudder was stained first of course. Then when that was dry the the transparent monocoat was applied over the cut outs, I also took off the wing block for I repositened it to carve in a vortex at the wing tip. I also scraped off as much as possiable then sanded as well. Its reall strong too.

RE: oly 2 s and bird of time arf
I liked the fuse so well Ive decided to fiberglass the whole plane. Ive started building the other wing half, and getiing the fin and rudder fiberglassed. Took awhile I noticed to remember building the wing half from before, to get rid of the cold feet you might say or in this case the brain. Any way two coats of fiberglass, and then a coat of clear. Ive weighed the fin and will post soon, the weight gain of this experimental covering. I also covered the holes with trans monocoat , after every thing was dry. Theres a pic ture of the 2 planes if been flying ,the BOT and Art Hobbys 1.5m Hybrid DL. Ive been launching with my high starts, both mini and the high made by pinacle. I can tell you I was scared the first time there. Anyway back to the Oly 11s. Ive decided to put the mudusa motor in it with a gear drive. I whould like your opinion out there as this build goes on here, if you think by my glassing the wing, if its not as strong or even stronger than carbon hopp up. Anyway Im excited there will post more soon.

I noticed watching carbon art the used the aero perfect along with a incidence meter. Great planes makes one, meaning incidence meter, are there any others out there? Also do you need the aero perfect or will the meter with a bubble do the job?

When I went to Joesph oregon for the fly in this summer, there was a old boy who had one his wife built. Bright colors small glow motor and big foam landing wheels. He was in the air more than most, and it was one of my favorites by the end of the day of watching every flight at the event. I chuckled at the way it out flew most or all planes there. I didnt know dynaflight was cutting back, better order one

Hobby lobbys aero master is around 350.00. and i did a build thread on her, right here. Its reall a impressive plane. Its not a glass slipper, but for the money , its pretty hard to beat. And plenty of room in the cockpit area for old fat hands like mine. Elevator control rod is tricky tho see thread.

thermal soaring with real flight
I got my ama magazine the other day and in it was skipmillermodels.com. Nice planes there by the way. But on his site is free down loads of three sail planes for real flight 3.5. Which is great for up untill that time, I only had the bird of time and the mistrial. And thats after 3 upgrades. Anyway there is also complete instructions of how to set up real flight and its now like going to the feild and flying sail planes. Maybe Im slow and alot of you guys have it already. But Im just thrilled about it. Its like a whole new set up to fly what I like to fly. For any of you fellow sail plane guys who thought real flight was lame this is perfect. I know this is the wrong thread but it is a hot lead as far as Im concerned. What a whole new ball game. Let me know if this helped any of you like it did me. If you have real flight this is a must do.
