RE: 44th Annual RCRC Pattern Contest, Huntsville, AL Sept 15-16
I hope everyone had a great time and sorry Chris and I couldn't make it. Chris was unable to get the time off so I elected to stay home too. Good thing I stayed, my wife have to have emergency surgery Thursday night. Everything is ok and she is up and around. Chris and I plan on being at Eglin and hope to see everyone there. Larry

RE: Help to ID this airplane
kitfox1, Just from looking at the photos in your post the prop on that engine looks like a prop for an electric motor. If it is you don't want to run that engine with that type of prop. For a YS160DZ I would suggest a APC 18.1 x 10 pattern prop and there are other choices also that will work. Larry

Jamie, Since I'm having to play hooky on this contest I'll send up some good Florida melons. I'll get 4 or 5 so you should have plenty to cut up for everyone. You guys have fun without me and Doug don't let the ground come up too fast. Larry

RE: ys 170 - shutting down
Taylor, To check the timing on this engine you have to remove the cam cover on the right side of the engine and the carb / rear housing from the back side of the engine. The rear housing is a rotary valve and it has a slot for the crank journal to fit in so it's important that get re-installed properly. With the engine open and you can see the crankshaft you will see a dot opposite the crankshaft journal. When you remove the cam cover you will also see a dot on the side of the cam gear. Gently rotate the engine crankshaft till the dot on the crank is aligned with the bottom seam of the engine, then look at the dot on the camshaft and if it's strait up and down then you timing is ok. If it is not gently pull the camshaft out and rotate the shaft until it is slightly left of top dead center. When the gear is back in place the dot will be strait up and down. Re-assemble and you should be ready to go. Remember the rotary valve from the rear of the engine has to go back on the crankshaft correct. You will see the oval slot and the end of the crank journal looks the same. Just my 2 cents Larry

Hey Jamie, It doesn't look good for me to be at Prattville this year. I hate missing it but watermelon season has already started and it's just impossible for me to get out of my work. On the other hand Chris and Larry Loucks will be coming right along with Terry Brockway so we will have some representation from central Florida. I'm not sure what some of the Orlando guys are doing, but I'm sure they will chime in here soon. You guys have a great time and play nice. Larry

RE: 2nd Annual D2 vs D3 Shootout March31-April 1
Kirk, Go to the system menu of your SD10G and cursor down to the fail safe part. Open that up and you will see all the channels and they all should be "INH". Bring your cursor down to "TH" throttle and with your throttle stick in the lowest position hit the "yes" button. You should get some large negative number, mine was -72%. Archie, I know you are the Futaba guru and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that 0% on the fail safe will be like half throttle. I think Futaba also needs to be at a large negative number like -70% or greater. I believe the logic is based on percentage of left/right, up/down, +100% / -100% so 0% should be half stick. Just my 2 cents. Larry

RE: 2012 Polk Pattern Classic Lakeland, FL
Well we have another Polk Pattern Classic in the history books. I hope that everyone had a great time and I know I sure did. It was great getting to see everyone again and we had a nice guest from D2 Mr. Larry Kauffman. It was a pleasure getting to know him and hope to see him again at the D2 - D3 Shootout at the end of March. We had a little weather issue on Friday and was rained out for practice that afternoon and Saturday it was real foggy but dead calm. The ceiling was too low for a while and it was around 12:30 before we could get started. There were 4 in FAI, 6 in Masters, 4 in Advanced, 7 in Intermediate and 2 in Sportsman. We had one brand new Sportsman pilot from Sebring, FL Mr. Terry Brockway and he did really well for his first time. I want to thank everyone for coming out to fly and hope that next year will just as fun. Here are your scores Thanks Larry Odom

Directions: I-4 exit 38 go north on Hwy 33 1/4 mile to Tomkow Rd. on the left. Take Tomkow Rd. to dead end. The gate is strait across intersection. Gate code is 7625# and remember you have to use the code to also get out. You could come fly and never get to leave! Larry

RE: 2012 Polk Pattern Classic Lakeland, FL
Hey Guys, It's getting closer to the time and we don't have too many signed up yet. If you plan on coming please go to the D3 website and sign up. Here's the links below to get you there quick. While you are there you can also sign up for the D2 - D3 Shootout and I know that Victor would like to see who's coming so he can get the correct amount of RIBBBBSSS. There is one more link I would like all of you to check out. It's associated with R/C Pilot Magazine for the AMA to manage all events. Go to the website and select RC Flight Deck and you can see events from all over the country and the numerous other SIGS. You can uncheck all the choices and just pick the one's you are interested in and the events show up on the right side of the page. (example: select NSRCA and then select Aerobatic Competition to see only pattern). If you open the event to check it out you can also sign up for that event there. When you select to sign up for my contest it sends you to the D3 website to register there. Soon I'll have it set so you can use Paypal to prepay for your registrations. RE: 2011 NSRCA D3 Championship Contest Results and Photos
Hey Everyone, For all of those who were able to make it to this year's District Championship thanks for coming. I know I had a great time being the CD although it was hard keeping the judges chair's filled. For those who felt like they were picked on to judge, you were and I'm sorry to do so but it was just one of those things. This was Chris's first time scoring and he did a pretty good job and was still able to fly. But it was not just Chis and I doing the work, there is also one more person that put just as much effort in getting this contest up and running and that is Mr. Ken Blackwell. He gave me plenty of advise on what to do, sent countless e-mails to all district members, organized and set the field up, and took all the photos of the pilots in the contest. So hats off to Mr. Blackwell and thank you for all of your support. Now this was my first time experiencing the Victor Diaz Ribbbbz and they were wonderful. I've heard all the stories about how good they were but could never seem to be at a contest that he cooked them. Well this time I finally got some and I stood there in the dark making a total pig of myself and loving every minuted of it. I'm going to beg and plead with Victor to see if by chance he could do ribs at my contest in February so cross you fingers for that one. Victor you did a great job and thank you for all the cooking you did. Also to Mrs. Fuqua, thanks for your green beans you cooked, they were great too. Tangerine will be here soon and with CPA being flown on Friday and AMA on Saturday and Sunday we should have a good time. Orlando is organizing this event and I'm going to help him in anyway possible. So everyone come to Apopka, FL and we'll have a great 3 days of pattern. Thanks to all Larry

Hey Guys, The D3 District Championship is just a couple of weeks away and if you have not preregistered please do so if you can. You can follow this link to get to the registration and there is also a page that shows everyone who has registered so you can see who's coming. Mr Blackwell and myself will be up there on the 2nd and 3rd getting the field set up and practice will begin early Friday and we can practice all day. Also Mr Victor Diaz is going to prepare Saturday evening dinner with his famous ribs which I know most of you D3 pilots have had. So this is going to be great weekend of flying and hope to see everyone there. Thanks Larry Odom 863-944-1280 https://sites.google.com/site/nsrcad3/home

D3 District Championships
Another great year is almost behind us here in District 3 with only the Rocket City Pattern Contest at Huntsville, AL and the Beachcomber Pattern Classic at Fort Walton Bch, FL. left to go it will be time for the District 3 Championships November 4th, 5th, and 6th. This contest will be held at the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park about 8 miles west of Cordele, GA on the south side of Hwy 280. There is camping at the park with hook-ups and camping at the flight line area but with no hook-ups. There is also a hotel at the park to stay at and other activities for other family members to do while the contest is going on. The link below is for the park so check it out. The Georgia Veterans State Park was chosen for it central location to all of our D3 pilots. and that the field has a grass east - west runway. The pilots will be facing north so we should not have to wait on the sun to clear which should let us start earlier in the mornings to get all of the rounds in. Just as normal practice on Friday the 4th and we will be able to fly all day at the field. I plan on being there November 2nd to set up the field so anyone able to be there on the 2nd or the 3rd your help would be greatly appreciated. That's all for now and if you needs to e-mail me my address changed it's: lcodomjr@verizon.net Thanks Larry Odom http://www.gastateparks.org/GeorgiaVeterans

RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
Hey Robert, That looks great [:D] I know one thing that was done to a V2 that was framed up by Jon Lowe was the fiberglass belly pan was cut in half about 10 inches behind the front of the pan and bulkheads added to support the area where you cut so that you could remove the front part easy for maintenance and not have to remove the entire belly. I'm going to do the same to mine but have it so it exposes the engine, header and hatori muffler (821) and only have to remove just a few screws. I'm also going to go with the 160 YS with mine too. I'll be getting with the program soon and get some pics up here also. Keep it coming, it looks like you are doing a great job. Larry

Hey Robert, Are you doing the 2.2 modes to the rudder on your V2? I have one ready to do wing and stab alignments, but it's so hot in my shop here in Florida that I can't stand to work in it. I'm looking forward getting this thing finished and see how it flies. I finished a V2.2 for a friend of mine and it flew really good and it was also on the cover of one of the K-Factors. It and two V3's that I painted were in the photo. Good luck on your build and hope to here how it flies soon. Larry

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
Hey Ed, If you have just average building skills you can build this plane light. The big killer with this plane or any other pattern plane is too much paint. I have now painted three VF3's and my first one was a problem because of too much paint and they become tail heavy. I was a terrible painter and Mike and Dean can vouch for that, but I finally got the hang of it and my paint jobs look nice and they are light. Just remember to use as little paint as possible and the weights will come out right. I'm can't remember if this thread has the paint and glassing tips on it or if the old V2 thread has them, but if you follow the suggestions that are posted on this website you won't go wrong. Example the latest VF3 I painted for my son Chris came out at 10lbs 6oz ready to fly which surprised the hell out of me. Happy building Larry

Some where I have that fix in an e-mail from him and it takes care of the print problem and when I find it I'll send it to you. Maybe next year you can have that contest in April and I can attend, and make sure you are going to be able to do ribs for districts so that I will finally get to try some. I always miss out for some reason. Chris gave a report and said it was a great contest and also thanks for putting him up in your home this weekend. Thanks Larry
