RE: Another Skymaster Viper
ORIGINAL: Jascat100 Beautiful day here, so went to maiden the Viper. Had four flights. All settings as per the manual & CG 235mm. Timer set for five minutes. Flight one:- Lifted off gently. Tried to retract the gear, but the doors fouled the slow rising gear, so flew with the gear down. Did a few circuits with very little trim required. Tried the flaps. At both take off & full settings the jet pitched up slightly (mental note to add some down mix). Flew mostly around half throttle with some full bursts. Landed a little on the fast side just to be safe. Flight two:- Added in 3% down elevator to take off flap & 6% to landing flap. Also set landing flap to more than 45 degrees. Filled gear tanks to 6bar pressure. Gear still would not retract properly. Landed slower & very gently. Flight three:- Noticed a slight gap between the right wing & the fuz, but seemed secure. After take off I went inverted & retracted the gear. One main & the nose went up, the other main fouled with the door. Slowed up more this time for a shorter landing. I checked the wing/fuz gap & it had not opened any further. Flight four:- Set landing flap for as much as possible, almost like airbrakes. Filled the gear airtanks to 8bar pressure. Took off & retracted the gear inverted. This time all three went up & the doors closed. The jet flys so much better with the gear up. Rolls are very axial. Slowed the jet up even more for landing & with the full flap, it landed at jogging pace. After landing I noticed the right wing/fuz gap had increased to over eighth of an inch. I stopped flying for the day. When I arrived home, I cut an access into the wing root, just above the wing retaining plate. There was virtually no glue securing the flat plate to the wing. You could see the dimples on the plate where the glue was supposed to be. I consider myself very lucky not to have lost my Viper due to this quality control issue. I have fitted ply supports & hysol. Although the other wing seemed ok, I opened it up & found there was plenty of glue in place. I added some hysol just in case. I must say the Skymaster Viper is a lovely jet to fly. It just needs Skymaster to fix the quality control issues to make it perfect. Regards Jim
Congrats Jim, Chris filled me in on all your escapades at Ladies Mile, luck b****rds some people were stuck behind the office all day... Also it seems the viper due to its size attracted some attention at the field from the RAF[:D] So now confident enough to bring it to ST.Barbs on Saturday[;)] On with the panther now

RE: OS engines users Club
Guys, I am a huge os fan have too many to list... I need HELP with my OS120 Surpass MK1 Pump. Basically upon re-assembly after i changed its bearings i broke part of the flywheel which connects the pump to the crankshaft. I thus need a new backplate with the PG-01 pump on it. Does anyone have such a part lying in a remote part of the workshop or know where i could find it? I have searched everywhere over the net, nothing! The OS website is not very helpfull as i have to contact them through a dealer. PLEASE HELP me restore this wonderfull engine thanx

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
Guys, finally finished my CMP Texan in the coulours of the Greek Airforce. I modifyed the model to fit the Robart 620 retracts. Powered by an OS 160 twin Gemini with sullivan on-board glow, graupner digital servos and Weatronic 2.4 radio. The wings are balsa covered and glassed, paint masks are custom cut from flightline graphics in the UK (highly recomended!!). Test flight to follow soon Regards Loukis

RE: O.S FS120 SURPASS I - Pump
Ken I have a perry pump, dont know how well it will work with the carburetor on the engine. The fuel regulator on this engine was in the pump. I would like to replace with the original pump. I may have found one...still waiting to see if it will be posted.

O.S FS120 SURPASS I - Pump
Gents, Through my own dumbness, i broke the flywheel of the crankcase pump in my old os fs 120 surpass I whilst cleaning it. Does any one have a new backplate with the pump or a used backplate and pump they would be willing to sell? The pump, which i cannot find the code for[:o] is the one with a large brass screw in the middle, any othe pupmp will not be compatible with the carb and crankshaft. Thanks Loukis

RE: Royal Marutaka P-51D Mustang
7aso, Its your build thread that gave methe inspiration to complete mine. I am worried a bit about the weight, royal/marutaka give you a box of block balsa and tell you to carve an airplane out of it. I have dremelled my way through most of the excess balsa however it is still rather heavy for my tastes...

RE: OS 120 Surpass E - loosing power
ORIGINAL: w8ye Do you have the crank case vented?  I cannot remember how it is done on that engine Whatever it has  the line from the crankcase to the intake manifold or just to outside air - but it must be plugged if the engine is pushing oil out the back hole
The crankcase has a nipple, its not vented to the intake manifold (my os120 pumped is like that). i checked the nipple on the crankcase, its clean. The engine is squirting unburnt fuel from that hole not oil... What is visible from the hole is the outside of the piston liner. My other OS 120's have the same hole and no fuel squirts out from there..

Royal Marutaka P-51D Mustang
This project has been going on for 20 years or so. The model was bought half built from a fellow modeller and was a bit crooked. I started correcting the fuselage as much as i could, needless to say many times i thought of just throwing it away, i was that frustrated..But i would just leave it in the corner of the workshop and work on it periodically (glad i did). Slowly it has come to the glassing stage, so i thought i'd do the finish online. Glassed the wings first coat, and the tailplane and bottom fuselage. im working on concealing the exhaust and on inner gear doors at the moment. It will be done up as Bud Anderson's Olive drab "OLD CROW". I got paint masks done by Flightline Graphics in the UK. The proprietor, Nigel Wagstaff is an excellent guy, very helpfull. I highly recomend his business to anyone who is in the market for taylormade paint masks and decals. Retracts are robart 550's with 7/16" ofset robostruts, engine is an OS 91 Surpass. Im working on 2 more models so it might be a slow build[8D]

Namely, he said that if the ducting in the cowl for the cooling air doesnt get the hot air out efficiently enough, the carb may suck in hot air which may lead to the symptoms im having. I will be checking this again, however im assuming that when i flew the plane with the cowl off, with the same symptoms, this would not have been an issue...

I'm talking about a real measurable drop in output and handling. If in doubt, change 'em anyway... and while it's striped down, slip on a new ring, it's a couple of bucks extra.  You're fuel is boarder line...5% doesn't really do anything... some, but nothing worth measuring. I'd use 15% on 1.20 Surpass. You'll notice that... not in so much as a huge power increase, more in a way of throttle/tuning response and overall well being. Next, plug. Don't know which you're using but OS F type is mandatory... and make sure it's a new one, changed often. My fav' prop...a 16x6. If you do the above, you're assured that the engines cooling enough, bearing are good, valves are set etc and the problem still exists... then start work the variables, meaning what are the factors that are changing from a ground run and flight? The engines unloading some, richen it up some clicks will take care of that, tank vibration, some foam will take care of that etc etc. I'd be surprised if the problem didn't vanished with 15% and a new F.
You might be right about the ball bearings David, they so seem to make that particular "noise", however wouldnt this cause a problem on the ground also? (ordered a new set) I have been using 5% nitro in all my engines, including 2 more os 120's with no problems. Spark is os type F, i changed to a new one when i was fiddling with the engine no change. No foaming in tank it was the first thing I checked. Also concerning cooling i even flew it with no cowling, still the same results...

RE: Winning explanations to wives for “WHAT we have another airplane?
Guys, its simple, my dad has been an aeromodeller and collector of kits and engines since the 50's, i have grown up in this hobby since as far back as i can remember. We have amassed over 100 planes over our modelling span. My wife knows i have a thing for planes, so i have a workshop in our new house, with the planes im working on and those which i fly...all the collection and new models are kept at my dad's and moms house. I should clear out my parents are divorced[:D] so 2 houses to stash model airplanes in... So when i change planes i simply take one out of my house, take it into storage and bring the new one in, its always 5 planes i seem to have at the house...she cant tell the difference between a spitfire and a mustang... P.S my dad was not so cunning when he was my age....[:)]

RE: OS 120 Surpass E - loosing power
Thanks for your comments guys, i'll try to answer some of the issues in one go: estradajae, I thought about g-forces the problem is how do you test that conclusively without flying the plane? I have held it at 45degrees nose high attitude to strain the fuel supply and it works[8|]. The throttle linkage is solid, no play there. There is a pressure nipple on my muffler will check for junk as per your advice.. w8ye, i have opened the low speed needle and the high speed needle is open only about a turn from fully closed. I will experiment more on this. RCPaul, checked the fuel supply with the cowl off, no foaming at all, i always insulate my tanks. Regards to all Loukis

RE: OS 120 Surpass E - loosing power
ORIGINAL: estradajae You may be having a problem with your fuel system... at the carb or at the tank (is tank position ok?). You may take a look for junk in the carb, or in the lines, clunk etc. What you are experimenting is the engine going lean during takeoff/flight. With your symptoms, don't further disassemble the engine, I think is not necesary. I would take the engine from the plane and run it in a test stand to see how it performs. Is the engine run in? you say it is everything new...it may be not fully broken in???
Estradajae, Thanks for your reply. The tank on both planes was brand new, no muck in them. The tank position is ok (it shouldnt have been a problem in both planes). Im thinking it might be at the carb also. It has been run on the stand, same results as with the plane on the ground, works faultlessly. it doesnt seem to go lean because with the hawk which has more lift i increased the angle of ascent at one point to see if it would further drop the rpm but nothing changed! I will take the carb off the engine to check if anything might be blocking fuel/air ways. If it was not run in when i bought it it definately is now. When i first installed it in the Yak I ran two tanks through it on the ground, rich, just to be sure all was working well..

OS 120 Surpass E - loosing power
Gents, I have a relativelly new OS 120 E which has been giving me grief from day 1. I bought it second hand, i checked compression, opened the back plate and the rocker head, everything was new. I installed the engine in a Yak11, nice round cowl, added baffles to guide the intake air over the cylinder head and had plenty of exit space for the air to go out. The engine was run on 5% nitro and 18% oil. The engine ran very smooth on the ground, both at full throttle and idle. As soon as the plane left the ground the rpm would drop substantially. I experimented with more adjusting, had the fuel needle to its richest (without stopping), increased the air outlet from the cowl, nothing. I ran the engine on full throttle on the ground for a couple of minutes straight, no loss of power, then as soon as take off is called, loss of power again. Checked the fuel tank also all was well, no air bubbles, holes or anything. This experimenting went on until finally the engine died on one flight and the Yak was badly damaged. I have also checked the valve timing, all ok. Initially i thought the piston/liner were damaged, but i inspected them and they are brand new, plus there is loads of compression. I have 2 more os120's and the compression is exactly the same. It has now been installed in a p6e and again the same issues, i had 3 flights managed to get the plane down safelly but im not risking it any more. The engine does not overheat. By process of elimination, ball bearings? or faulty carb?[:o] I am baffled, any ideas welcome.

RE: Royal Kits
Frets24, That a beautiful model! im glassing mine now which had a similar history to yours, I bought it with the fuselage constructed (like a banana), and i just stored it in my workshop for the past 15yrs. A few months ago I decided i would correct the construction errors and finish it. The fuselage has been straightened as much as possible, built the wings, modified accordingly to fit inner gear doors also. I am a bit worried about the all up weight of the model with all the detail added although I sanded and carved most of those block balsa bits out, its still a beefy construction. I agree with you that heavy planes fly better however, not on landing and not in a deadstick situation, high wing loading is a killer there. I have also seen another royal/marutaka mustang sr. a few years ago snap roll on takeoff because of weight/washout issues which did put me off a bit. It was not built very well and was very heavy, hope thats why it came down[:o]

I had a bit of a mini adventure with this kit, i love this plane, i have the old royal kit, never been round to building it so when i saw this one at my LHS i bought it. I dont like arfs, the quiality is very good indeed however mine had two bad blindnuts in the wings for the cabanes from the factory. Because of this i decided to strip the whole airframe, replace the blind nuts and recover it with solartex and paint it to get a more scale look[:D] Did any of you guys modify the nut and bolt system for the interplane struts? Im worried about vibrations although im using lock nuts, which will be ok, however they will need replacing after constanly loosening and tightening them, anyone been more adventerous on this point?

OK now im FRUSTRATED! David, Gerhard, i have tried everything you advised me and the results are as follows: The battery connection and module connection are solid, when I have te weatronic module on the battery flickers, when i switch to the spektrum or graupner 35mhz, the battery is stable?!?!?. I have downloaded all the files from weatronic usa, my computer goes through the new hardware wizard only to come out with an error message at the end saying "there was an problem in installing this harware an error has occured during the instalation of this device and the harware cannot be installed". I have tried this countless times over and over again. Gerhard as per your advice i guided the computer to where the USB file is and nothing. Please confirm the files on the download page of you website are ok, the USB file is quite small. Regards Loukis

RE: 2.4 GHz Weatronics, PPM or PCM?
ORIGINAL: David Gladwin A few things to try: 1. If the screen voltage problem has occurred with a previous unit I suspect YOUR transmitter. 2. Try reinstalling the USB driver and make sure you are using software V 2.06 , mine would not work at all with an earlier version. Also try inserting the USB cable into a different comms port. 3. Shake them and they rattle ! I wanted to look inside the module to see why but they are glued together not screwed. The big switch unit for the larger DR also rattles when shaken Mine is ready again for a day's flying at Scampton tomorrow. Any advice on how to get Weatronics to reply to emails would be appreciated. I have a few queries on the software before finalising the Giga control article for the next RCJI ! All I want to do is support them, they have created a fantastic product which could change the face of RC ! Regards, David Gladwin.
David, Thanks for the swift response, your advise is always thorough and to the point [;)] I suspected my transmitter also, however it does not do this with the spektrum model i am using now, and did not do this with its original 35mhz module. If i send it off to Graupner, they will only check it with one of their own modules, not with the spectrum or weatronics.. I did use the v 2.06 software but there seems to be a problem getting the computer to link my transmitter with the software, Gerhard p has also comented on this will follow his advice also see how it goes. Here goes, I have the system installed on my Graupner MX22 with an 8ch receiver. The transmitter and receiver have been bound however: (a) The voltage on the transmitter screen is flickering and is not constant (i jad this issue when testing the old Graupner IFS, which I scrapped and got the spectrum system which worked flawlessly for 2 years, now back to square 1)[:o] (b) I cannot get the giga software thinggy to identify my transmitter on my computer, keep getting errors. (c) the transmitter module seems to have something loose inside is this normal?
