OK, this is an old thread but I'm visiting Renton area next week. The weather forecast is great so I expect a lot of RC flying going on somewhere. Can someone point me to an active club where I can see maybe 2 or 3 pattern flyers and some turbine jets? Don't have to be the same club/field and doesn't have to be in the Renton area.

When used with the ESC it puts them in serial to make an equivalent 10S pack or do you have to buy (extra weight) a separate 2 to 1 battery adapter? Also, is there a real quality difference between zippy and turnigy batteries? When I look at them I immediately think 'same factory'.

RE: New pattern ship recomendation
Thanks. Any other weekend this summer would have worked but I leave town Thursday and won't be back until mid next week! Figures... Darn, if you fly today or tomorrow and your buddy with the Vanquish comes out let me know, I'd like to take a look at it. F3AUnlimited is supposed to be getting back to me with info on if/when they are going to get the full size Mythos in. I like the lines of the 125 but would rather have the full size - easier to see in flight. Hard to believe it's easy for a full 2m plane making the weight with an additional lipo/regulator to feed the servos/Rx and with large 10s pack(s) for the motor based on what i hear on all up weights. I'm interested in seeing details about lightweight alternate battery source that makes sense for the Rx/servos that doesn't need recharging after every 2 flights... What's the typical ratio these days of higher level pattern flyers at contests with electric vs glow fuel? That's another curiousity I have. I had a love hate relationship with YS AC engines back when I tried to fly contest pattern. The joke was you needed at least 3 engines. One in your plane ready to break at any inconvenient moment, the spare you had at a contest for when your primary broke, and the third back at the OS repair center getting fixed...it was't far from the truth for the most serious flyers... What's the equivalent Hacker motor to the silver bullet? As is obvious, I already fly electric a little but I don't 'study' it, I just get what they recommend and live with it. But for this new plane, I want to put independent thought into setting it up hence why I'm doing research and asking probably dumb questions to any who's gone down this path already. BTW, are the monolog and the vanquish essentially identically presenting planes and equally capable and equally well made?

RE: New pattern ship recomendation
ORIGINAL: rcpattern I built the Vanquish at the beginning of this thread with the silver bullet. The ESC wasn't available at that monent, so I used the Castle. The Torque works fine. The HiMax has more power for virtualky the same cost. The Torque does work and I am sure the Airboss ESC does as well. You can use cheap 10s packs (dual 5s) and it will work fine. If you read the beginning, you will see that I intentionally didn't use the latest and greatest stuff. I used good, but economical stuff. As I did in the thread, I would definitely use a separate receiver battery. When you invest this much in a plane, the cost of a little redundancy is minimal. Arch
Thanks for the reply but are we talking about the same himax motor? The link above is to one that's about $100 more than the silver bullet. Himax 6330-210 F3A Motor (210KV) $279.99. For the silver bullet motor or even the himax in the link, what C rating 5 cell pack is the minimum safest to use and is there a generally preferrred place to order the packs from other than HK? You wouldn't by chance be flying in the next couple of days? I'm out of the area soon but wouldn't mind checking the setup out before ordering.

RE: New pattern ship recomendation
I too am looking for a 2m pattern plane. Not because I compete but because I enjoy how they fly AND as I've gotten older my eyes don't enjoy the littler planes (I have the GP Sequence f3a now). So I want the size for 'visibility and enjoyment'. With that in mind, I don't feel guilty about not spending money or time trying to get the last 5% or 2% out of the setup if I don't want to. Heck, I'd be happy with a 2m pattern running with a DLE 35, perfect for what I do. With that in mind, why is no one recommending the silver bullet f3a motor and Airboss 80 Elite ESC that the vanquish was spec'd for? Have we learned something negative about them over time? Also, are folks putting in any alternate power source for the servos and receiver?
ORIGINAL: rcpattern If I were you, having flown a Vanquish with the stock Torque motor, and also one with the HiMax in it, I would lean towards the HiMax. It definitely has more power. Pair it with a Castle ICE2 80HV and you are all set. Very easy setup. If you have any questions on it, please don't hesitate to ask, Arch
What is the exact HiMax motor and Battery setup are you speaking of? Links would be a quick help. I too like the looks of the Vanquish and there's a good video of one flying with a Hacker on 6S out of Germany that looked pretty capable so it's got me wondering what alternative setups I could use to power the plane and get 8 to 9 minutes out of a flight.

I just finished mine up. 3lb 14oz. With the battery all the way forward, it comes out about a quarter inch behind the recommended CG. The CG is right under the wing tube. Is everyone still flying there at the recommended CG or if you ended up moving your CG one way or the other, which was it and about how much? ps, i didn't have any of the issues I'd read here and there in this forum. The covering was generall very good and tight. My canopy fits great and the locking tabs really do fit and work, my landing gear wasn't 'warped'. Overall, really really impressed so far.

Seems too good to be true but I can't find anyone yet who has anything bad to say about them. Any opinions? Has anyone found the single elevator servo and stock elevator pushrod to be a real detriment? Is anyone actually using the recommended Futaba 3115 servos all around? RE: power 25 brushless can i use a 11x7 prop?
ORIGINAL: Waterlogged The 13x6.5 prop will be the best and create the maximum safe loads using 3s packs. The RPMs will drop as you increase both the pitch and diameter. Go up in diameter means go down in pitch. A 12x6 will draw about the same load as a 11x7 or a 13x5. The way to choose the right one is based on type of model.... a light weight sleek racer would use a smaller diameter but aggressive pitch... like a 10x9 on this motor. A heavy and big trainer would use the 13x6.5 or even a 14x5. -WL
I have this motor and am too looking for more performance than the stock prop. I haven't tried the 13x6.5 but do have the 12x6.5. What makes you think the 13 diamter would be the best? If my manual is right, your 6 inches would be quite a handfull to control! The Gold Wing manual for this calls out 6 and 11/16 inches (170 mm) I found some old Wild Hare 50cc Ultimate build posts and the CG range was 6.5" recommended for first flght with 6.75" for 3d. Well, everything else about my kit was a bad joke so I'll presume they messed up the CG as well and just go with something in the 6 inch range too.
ORIGINAL: charlesp as far as balancing if you read post 47 it should fly well. becouse I am just a little bit foward of that and will be moving it back I would not think you would need 30 degrees on your first flight mine only moved .5'' up or down on the first flight and responded well I would start there with your low rates just MHO Good luck
I had already read it and I had no idea how to intpret it - and my top wings are epoxied together so I'm not going to look at the root rib side profile and try to guess either. That's why distance from leading is the best and unambiguous way to describe this, like plans do. However, I heard there were mistakes on some kits so I'm not sure which one of those is even right that I've been able to find. No two say the same thing and the Aero works kit is different than the kit I have.

RE: NitroPlanes Ultimate 50cc and DLA56 - Full Build Post
I'm starting to notice even more differences. I have the large cutout in the wings for the servos to be install internally underneath the access panel with only the control arm sticking up through a slot. My outer wing struts do not come with wooden tabs to screw into the struts nor are they installed. I have 16 little anodized aluminum tabs hanging lose in a bag that I guess I'm supposed to insert somewhere, somehow and that 's supposed secure the struts. Everything is monocoted over so I will have to hunt to pre made slots or something. There's no mention of them. Every website picture I've seen has the cabanes pre-colored yellow. Mine are not. All the hinging I've seen are robart on web sites, mine are slits for CA hinges. One of the 4 top wing 'joiner tabs' to the cabanes that did come pre-installed has been snapped off during shipping. It's an integral part of the inner top wing ribs so in a sense part of the rib has been snapped off. I notice on this thread the original guy glued his top wing halves together and just eliminated this weakness in the design. I really don't want one long 71 inch wing if I can help it. I could easily see this happening again just from transporting the wing halves around to and from the field. Did you glue top wing halves together as well? I guess I could always hack the current rib out, use it as a template and put in a new one plus carbon fiber the whole inner rib/tab on each wing half to try and make it more durable and less prone to snap off. How's yours been holding up? did you use the fuel tank that came with it? I actually like the shape, just not sure it's going to hold up over time without splitting. It's plastic half seams look pretty sketchy in a couple of areas.

I'm guessing two 16 inch leads for the 2 elevator servos, probably 2 12 inch Y leads for the ailerons and 4 16 inch leads for the extensions in the wings? Maybe some of those are too long.
ORIGINAL: charlesp not the upper wing tabs but the strut tabs in each wing 8 total The reason i changed them is becouse two of them broke off flush with the top of the bottom wing and i had repaired them but was getting a cracking noise when i lifted the plane from the wingtips (balancing). I knew something was nt good! At first I was just going to look. I pulled off the covering and scored the light ply on the side of the tab... Pulled th ply off without any trouble then grabbed the tab. It pulled out without any glue on it I would not just glue it with CA as this is a gas plane and i just would not trust it. Believe me I hated cutting into it but would rather have a patch on the plane rather then have to fix it after a crash. What I did was remove the ply on one side of the tab inside the wing. I then removed the tab and dry fit the new aluminum tabs. note :: I made the new tabs 1/4 ''longer so there was some fitting required. I also made a new inner rib to replace what i had taken off. I then drilled a hole passing through the new rib the tab (witch it taped) and ply on the other side. I then put a bolt passing through everything After i got the two tabs on the one side of the wing to a point that i was happy with the way it fit. I used 30 min epoxy to glue them. I had the strut installed to be sure that everything stayed lined up during the curring After everything was done i lifted up on the wingtips and there was no cracking noise like before hope this helps
Good stuff.
