RE: Sad News - Jim Womack
I heard the news this weekend at the Woodland Ca race... As most people know, I was introduced to Pylon racing by Bruce Coffey. And during those early years, Jim Womack practiced with us most every weekend. I would venture to say that all three of us flew together for about 2 years.. We wore out the race course. Jim was an awesome guy, very helpful to me... I'll certainly never forget him

RE: Racing Sticker, Application and Removal
Dennis, Use your 3M tape and tape down the corners with a 1/2" x 1/2" piece of tape.. And 3M tape the sticker seem on the bottom.. That will fix it from peeling off in flight. Never had one peel off, and I live in the swamp [:D]... RB

RE: Racing Sticker, Application and Removal
yea baby! a little Race Glaze here and there is always good.. [:D] I second what both these AMA National Champions just said.. wax that wing BEFORE you apply your lane sticker, even if you have a monocote wing...wax it, then put your sticker on.. It will come off so much easier. WC

RE: Battery use info
And you guys hit on another sweet feature of the 6.6V LiFe packs... you can run both HV servos and non-HV servos in the same plane, without a regulator.. and the battery will run it all without problems. It's enough voltage to work the HV stuff, and not too much voltage that would damage your non-HV stuff.... At least in the JR servo world. But you should always check your servo specs before listening to anybody on a website chat. RB

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/avionics-life-rx-600mah-6-6v-30c-w-universal-plug-ORI60502 Here is the pack I use.. just in case anyone wants that info.. Ultimately it really doesn't matter how many mah's you use to fly a heat race, or for a 5 race day...right? Just as long as you have enough battery to get you through the day. The things I like with the Orion LiFe packs

RE: Battery use info
I have put 17 flights on a Q40.. using the Team Orion 600mah LiFe pack.. ALL "high voltage" JR 3711 digital servos, 4 in total.. Maybe 4 or 5 minutes per flight with the radio on, that's a guess of course.. Charged the pack.. Only put about 285mah in the pack. So that was about 16.5mah per flight.. Technically you could fly many more flights.. But that was about my limit [:D] Randy Bridge

RE: Frustrated with hangar rash!
Just crash more... that way you always have new stuff. [:D]... I use towels like a mad man. Wrap the wing in a towel.. Hard mounted racks in cars are brutal on hangar rash.. I'd rather lay the planes in the car lose wrapped in towels than on a rack.. Works well for me. I have foam padded fixtures at home for storage, they work great. RB

Don't you worry Sam... I'd bet a lot of money on that motor! If it runs 1/2 as good as the FAI engines those guy build. We'd all be in a world of hurt.

RE: natural wood color filet
Dave, Next time.. Do all your filler work before you glass the fuse, so that your filler is under your finishing resin/glass cloth. All that is used on the Vortex to install the tail and finish it is, Z-poxy finishing resin and micro balloons (white).. The finishing resin turns it a little brown in color, and by the time you glass over it and paint the clear.. It looks faily close in color. And as you probably figured out, that balsa top block piece that runs between the tail.. is tricky to make. getting it to fit so that the need for any fillet at all is the trick. Don't sweat it too much.. sand it all smooth and paint it clear.. and go fly it. Looks like a SuperT Vortex tail :-) RB

RE: WHat makes this sport attractive?
Yea I raced 125CC Rotax Karts for a few years not long ago. It was certainly not same the friendly environment I've found in Pylon racing model planes. So I agree with all you guys, the people and ever lasting friendships that come out of it is superb.. When I look back 30 years ago, dad and I used to fly pattern.. and we had the same type of fun with the guys we hung around with. Good fun for sure. RB

RE: WHat makes this sport attractive?
The "K" factor of flying around 3 poles, versus sport flying in front of myself... plus the speed.. If I wasn't racing Q500, Q40, or FAI.. I'd be racing some sort of Kart or Legend car! Randy Bridge

RE: NEW Q40 & Q500 Engine by DKT Engines
Hey BV, My best guess.. someone could test fly these as much as they want. I think Dan Kane and company have to weigh the good and bad of bringing another engine Mfg into our hobby. It will be a very opionated subject for sure. Same as it was for Robert Vandenbosch when he brought his Q40 motor to Ft. Lauderdale. There are processes and rules to be followed, some folks don't agree with the procedures involved.. so guys like the process used. For the most part I believe we have some stability back in our hobby, keeping engine changes to the absolute bare minimum brings stabilitly. Bringing in another engine Mfg can possibly break down the core of what we have. We will sit back and see what happens.. [:D] Randy Bridge

Ah yes, I remember that plane.. I was confused with that V-Tail side mount engine plane.. Regardless, I don't think a build thread exsists.. You can go to Big Bruce Racing and possibly email Bruce himself, maybe he has some info on building that plane...being it is his kit an all.. Good luck. RB

RE: Crash at Reno Air Races
I spoke with Tom Scott, he said it hit about 150-200 feet from his box seats.. Tom and his friends are not hurt. Tom also said Vern and Betsy Smith were in box seats as well.. they are also fine, just shaken up by how close it crashed to them. Jack Fehling family and his family are also at the Reno races, they are all safe as well.. WC

RE: reciver
yea sorry about my response, it does sound a little wishy washy..lol.. I think mostly the 424 guys use the 6200 series RX's, and they work fine in that environment. But when you put those in a 426, 428, or Q40.. whether the high frequency vibration or what ever.. they seem to not hold up as well. It's worth the few extra bucks to stick to the AR7000 series RX's, or the AR9000's like what I use.. nice rebuild of my old Vortex.. glad to see someone get excited about racing. and it makes me happy to know that I can do some good.. cheers Randy Bridge

Pretty darn good fix job for sure.. looks good as new. I'm glad you can get some use out of it [:D].. Bruce Coffey is a great guy, and someone who will certainly help in any way he can.. RE: reciver
There has been some issues, very random and not related to anything in particular. But most of the Pylon racers stick to the AR7000 or AR7010 DSMX series or higher.. I specifically use nothing but the AR9010's and sometimes run dual satilite RX's.. Cheers, RB

RE: Course Judging
by rule... A turn is legitimate (i.e., there is no cut) if any part of the aircraft goes outside and around the pylon. If there is any doubt about a possible cut, the pilot should be given the benefit of the doubt.

RE: EF-1 at Nats
Good points Bob. Don't forget that these aircraft cure the argument that you can't sport fly a Q40 or Q500. Which we hear that from time to time. So you can take your Pogo, or Shoestring and sport fly it cause of some things you mentioned.. it has throttle control, tail wheel to taxi with. I certainly believe the main goal was achieved. And that is "cost" and "speed".. You are always going to have the "na-sayers", we have seen that since the beginning of time. I for one believe the event at the Nats was a success, my hats of to Jerry Small...he was grinning ear to ear, and one hell of a nice guy. Maybe in time they might tweak things for a faster model.. however in "most" cases speed translates to costs. If someone really wanted faster electric F1's, then possibly putting together a test data package and presenting it to Dan Kane/Jerry Small for review and approval would be the best route to go. RB

RE: EF-1 at Nats
Larry you should of come to our pit area and discussed your concerns and ideas for improvement. I had 2 of the F5D USA team members pitting right next to me, I had Jerry Small right in front of me (better info than what Dave Latcha could provide for sure).. Jerry is probably the leading motivator for the event, and one heck of a nice guy. He would of talked at length with you as to why they chose the battery motor combo they did. I have to believe speed and money where two big factors. I believe they had a target speed in mind that would allow any sport flyer to compete and handle the plane. If you wanted more performance the F5D stuff is over 200mph now, and those planes have every bit of performance you'd be looking for. I think the planes will fly better in time, first time designs rarely fly perfect. The Shoestring that Jerry Small loaned me flew really good, and Horizon Hobby will have that on the market in a few months... and it looks bad ass. It was all very easy to set up and operate, and I'm not an experienced electric guy. Cheers, Randy Bridge
