RE: Best .40 size 3D (beginners) plane ?!
For the money and for the motor you have, I like the Modeltech Magic Extra (NOT the normal Magic, make sure it's the "Extra"). It's pretty small for a 40, and it is a good 3D ship that still does everything else well. I hear good things about the Katana, too, but have never flown one myself.

RE: saito 180 to big for a funtana .90 ?
I would use a small about of epoxy to reinforce the firewall joints. You'll need taller main gear (CF is a good option for weight reduction - http://www.tntlandinggear.com/store/shop/composite_landing_gear.htm) to fit an 18" prop and everyone is upgrading their tailwheel to a Sullivan. I've heard the 1.80 runs really rough as well, so a vibra-damp mout or at least some rubber washers is probably a good idea (http://www.dbproducts.com/). Just keep the prop pitch 6 and under and watch the throttle on downlines. I think you'll be very happy with the 1.80. I wouldn't probably gone that route had I not found a 1.50 for a good price on Ebay.

RE: saito 180 to big for a funtana .90 ?
It will be fine. A lot of people are putting the 1.50 on it (including myself), which is sufficient. I wouldn't say the 1.80 is overkill, because I love power, but I think it may be the rule of diminishing returns. I hear the 1.80 burns much more fuel than the 1.50, and everyone who has the 1.50 says that it provides plenty of power (I've never seen that disputed). So, it will be fine if you don't mine forking over the $$$ for the fuel. Just watch your throttle and keep the speed low. Use that power for vertical pull, not lateral speed.

RE: Funtana 90!
APC makes a 18x6W - would that be too much if running 30% on the 1.50? From what I've read, probably too much prop.

RE: Funtana 90!
Does anyone know for sure if the larger Perry oscillating pump will feed enough fuel to the Saito 1.50? I've heard differing opinions.

RE: Funtana 90!
Just by switching to Lipo batteries, CF landing gear, and lighter wheels/axles you can make more of a weight difference than the weight difference between any of the proposed motors.

RE: Funtana 90!
Excellent points. I'm just approaching it from the standpoint of someone who already had a Saito 1.50 and wants to close the performance gap with the YS. In retrospect, I would've purchased the YS 1.40. I may forego the pump since few people (if any) seem to be using one with the Saito. The pump costs $25. Not sure of the weight.

RE: Funtana 90!
If the primary advantage of the YS is the pressurized fuel system, why not run a Perry pump on a Saito 1.50? Would that close at least some of the reported performance gap between the YS and the Saito?

RE: Funtana 90 What engine ???????? help
TManiaci, Are you running the stock motor mount? If so, how's the vibration? Also, I was considering some of the boosted servo extensions from servocity.com for the tail servos since it's such a long haul back there. I assume that would be overkill since no one has mentioned using those yet.

I'm running standard servos on mine . . . and I have them setup for mechanical DISadvantage, hehe. I'm running 6V, but would still like the servos to be a bit quicker. No flutter on mine so far. I do have my hinges sealed.

FYI, HobbyPeople.net has Magnum .91 4-strokes on sale for $150. I ordered another one to replace the rather old Mag .91 currently on my Twist. Great motor for the Twist, and at $150 you can't go wrong.

What about 30% heli fuel in a Magnum .91? I like the 30% for my other engines, but I think it may be causing predetonation in my Magnum. I hear a knocking at certain RPMs.

Kewl, I'll definitely try that next flight. I guessed and made my extentions 2 inches as well. Any tips on elevatoring this beast? I can easily elevator my Extremeflight Mini 3D, but the Twist eludes me.

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Vs. Model Tech Magic
thevirginian, I added your mod to my Twist, and you're right. It just makes the plane behave better all around. Definitely worth the trouble. I still can't elevator this plane. I can tail slide the heck out of it, but no elevator. Shouldn't a tail slide normally be more difficult than an elevator? I suspect it may be because in an elevator the tail isn't getting clean air, but in a tail slide it is.

Great looking install. Thanks for the pics. I'm going to give this a shot, although mine won't look that clean. [8|] How wide were the tips you installed (meaning how much additional wingspan did they add)? Any methodology to that?

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Vs. Model Tech Magic
I'm thinking about cutting a small horizontal groove in the wing tip from front to back, glueing a sheet of thin ply into the groove so that it sticks out maybe 3 inches, putting a couple of braces on the top and bottom, and then covering it with matching yellow packing tape. More or less is that how you did it? Hehe, I guess the better question would be "how did you do yours" rather than me trying to reverse engineer it. [:D]

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Vs. Model Tech Magic
Yeah, I just made a cut in the monocote and used velcro and a zip tie to secure the battery. Then I covered the cut with clear packing tape. Not extremely elegant, but effective.

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Vs. Model Tech Magic
I have my battery just in front of the tail servos. I'm only running a 2 cell 850 mah Lipo pack, so it's not as drastic as it sounds, but you can slide the battery as far back as you want.

RE: Funtana 90!
Nice setup! You have a fortune in radio equipment. I couldn't afford digitals, so I'm running high-torque (144 oz) MG analog servos. I'll hopefully upgrade one day. This may be a stupid question, but that's never stopped me before. Can I run a spinner nut on this motor? This is by far the largest motor I've ever run. I love spinner nuts because of their ease of use and light weight (I use the aluminum ones). Do I really need to run a lock nut and a spinner?

RE: Funtana 90!
I assume you're not running a pump. Probably overkill for me, so I may ditch it to save the weight if it's not needed. I plan on mounting the tank in the stock location since it's such a hassle to run a header tank and mount a larger tank behind the wing tube.

RE: Funtana 90!
Thanks. I'm at sea level, so it should be even better [:D]. What tank are you using with your 1.50? Are you using a pump? I have a perry oscillating pump, so I think I may need to upgrade tanks so I don't blow the stock one. Thoughts?

RE: Funtana 90!
I think I can hit 9 lbs with the 1.50. We'll just have to see how heavy the ARF is I get. Based upon the components I've upgraded, I've taken around 14oz. off the airframe's "stock" setup. Of course about 10 oz. of that is being eaten back up by my motor compared to a Saito 100. In any case, I still should be 4 oz. under the stock seutp with the "recommended" engine. According to what I've read, my motor is about 4-5 oz. heavier than you YS110. That would put me right at 9 lbs with your airframe and my motor. We'll see.

RE: Funtana 90!
Thanks obolel, Sullivan doesn't make a 14 oz. round tank. Thoughts on the next best option? Retangular maybe? I don't have my ARF yet, althogh I've already spent almost as much on upgraded components as the ARF costs. So, I don't know if a retangular tank will work.
