Transmitters, PPM, Channels, and FPV.
This is kind of a complicaed question for all you smart RC types........ here goes. I'm currently into Sport Nitro planes. I have a great Futaba 7c 2.4ghz radio that i'm happy with. I would like to get into FPV. I'm not planning on flying long range or anything but a UFH system would make my RC link much more safe and reliable and give me some peace of mind. UHF systmes take and convert a PPM signal to a Frequency hopping UFH signal. From what I have heard the Band or signal length of PPM limits it to 8 channels........from my calculations I would like to have more like 10 channels for more complicated models in the future. 4 flight controlls, flaps, gear, tilt, pan, engine sync, stabilizer, osd, RTH, ect......it adds up quick.. Most UHF systems support only 8 channels, but the Thomas Scherrer system supports up to 12. Soooooooo Im confused. Can you really get 12 PPM channels out of the trainer port in a radio like the Futba 8FG or 12FG? Does the 8fg really have 12 real proportional channels????? I know the 10C and 9C futabas only output 8 PPM channels thru the mudule port............. Anyone Have advice for me for what Transmitter to upgrade to so I have more to work with in the future? There must be people that have had this problem. Right now Im leaning toward an older mudular Futaba 10C so I can add a head tracker to the trainer port and plug the UHF into the module plug and settle for 8 channels........... Thanks :-)

RE: New Twin Commanche ARF
Looks like the fa55 will be light enough but just stick out of the cowls according to specs. Do both the .46ax's and the 55ax's fit inside the cowls? Id definitely use Pitts mufflers.

RE: Seagull Piper Twin Comanche
Guys, Thinking about this for my next model. Would like to not have to chop up the cowls. It looks like the 46ax's fit nicely inside. I would like to go with 4 strokes but the FA-70 are too big to fit inside. I was wondering if the FA-56's would fit. They turn the same size prop as the 46ax and they are a bit lighter and would save on gas......and I'm guessing the .46ax's are probably overkill for scale/spirited flying. I'm not looking for this thing to be an aerobat. . Thoughts? There is a completed Twin Comanche at my local hoby shop with retracts on it so i'm thinking I might be a buyer. It caught my eye. :-)

RE: NEW HANGAR 9 CHRISTEN EAGLE
Sorry to hear about your plane. I would send the fuse back for a new one since it its suck a head turner. I also had trouble getting the last bolt in the cabane. It was the only annoying part of the build. But I just finished a CMP cessna 182 that was such a piece of crap it made this model seem super quality and easy to assemble. My Eagle with the Saito 125 looks and sounds sooooo sweet. I just like watching it idle...... Although the engine is breaking in it does still shake the plane quite a bit. My only gripe with the plane is that with a 16x6 MAS prop on my SAITO 125 I need to have about 65-70% throttle to keep the plane from sloshing around in the air. Its not like its going to stall or anything......I just thought it would not have to have 80% throttle to be really responsive. Of course when I give full power it will climb straight up and fly fairly fast. You guys have any tips on a prop? Right now I'm turning a 16x6 at 9300 rpm(slightly rich). I'm thinking a 16x7 or 16x8 might make it fly a little faster at 1/2 throttle and save me some gas and flight time. The plane is super easy to taxi, takeoff and land. Tumbles and snaps are the coolest. rolls and loops ans straight and easy. Its just a cool plane!!! It does get hard to see if you get it too far away though. :-)

RE: NEW HANGAR 9 CHRISTEN EAGLE
OK. I'll have to order the 90degree manifold. The saito 125 sounds awesome and turns a huge prop but man this thing shakes my Eagle like crazy. IS it shaking anyone elses plane like mine. Maybe its because its a new motor or maybe I need to balance out the prop........ but at any rate I hope I can smooth this thing out. Any ideas? This has to be the best looking plane in my collection BTW..............hopefully it flys as good as it looks.

RE: NEW HANGAR 9 CHRISTEN EAGLE
That is such a cool Story about a wing falling off.............. I ordered a FA-125 and the plane yesterday from my local hobby shop...........it should be here tomorrow. :-) I feel like I'm going backwards in technology with the glow 4 stroke............but I don't want to pay an extra 200 for the FG-21 and as I already own a DLE-20 on something else I was looking forward to the sound of a 4 stroke on this thing........ Crazy how many of you guys are running the DLE-20 though............. making me doubt my choice. :-( Anybody running redundant batteries/receivers on this plane? My plans are for a LIFEsource reciever pack, high torque servos for the tail and standard servos for the ailerons.....

RE: NEW HANGAR 9 CHRISTEN EAGLE
Guys, I'm going to get this plane next week. I have the engines narrowed down to the FG-21, FA-125, or a DLE-20. I already own a DLE-20 in a cub and I really like it but the 4 stroke sound in a scale plane like this would be great. I'm going to go with Standard Servos for the ailerons and High torque for the elevator and rudder. Life Batteriey(or batteries) and a smoke system (Sullivan Skywriter) Any advice on the power plant? Is the FG-21 going to vibrate more than the FA-125?.......too much weight with ignition? Thanks

RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Sad day............. After Installing a new High torque elevator servo(since one was getting slow) and adding a 16x8 two blade prop my brother and I went up north to fly my Cessna off floas for the 2nd time. It was a windy day but the wind was steady and the plane was heavy and flew very stable on the first flight off water a few days prior. This time the new prop helped the plane jump off the water much better. After the turn to my downwind leg the plane hit some turbulance and immediately went into a stall spin. I probably could have saved it but the plane was heading toward people watching the flight on the beach and I did not want risk going into a secondary stall and hit someone................so sadly I let in go in............. You dont want to see pictures of the wreck......................the plane is not salvageable. I'm not sure if I had a failure of some sort...........or I simply got too slow........or the turbulance just threw the nose up or maybe a combination of two or three of those things. 10-15 degrees of flaps were deployed during the entire flightt. The first time I flew on floats the plane flew perfectly with this setting. It did need some nose down elevator....but nothing that seemed to crazy to me maybe 5 clicks. I was use to the 16x10 flying the plane plenty fast at 1/2 throttle. I might have just not had enough power with the 16x8 to let it cruise safely. Since I added the New servo I left the elevators neutral and did not retrim the elevator down and I was fighting to keep the nose down thru the bumps. Maybe the wing inncidence is just made this thing more of a handful then it needed to be and let to the nose popping up. Either way. I have so much time and money into everything in that stupid thing that im not sure if I should buy the Projet model and throw everytihg into it......or just pony up the cash and buy a ESM 185 or beaver with floats and put my parts into one of those. I just spent soo much time and money making my Floats look and work great...... What do you guys think? I have built 7 RC airplanes including that cub on floats............This is my first ever wreck........and it sucks. Mike Here is the video. RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Guys, I flew the Cessna off water today for the first time!!!!! Here is my report. My First takeoff run was unsuccessful. I held slight back pressure to keep the planes nose up and realized I was going to stall it once I was out of ground effect. so I cut the throttle and I somehow used the rudder and ailerons to keep it upright. After a couple bounces I taxied the plane back to the shore and inspected it..........Everything seemed fine. Second takeoff run. Flaps with one notch down. I let the plane get out of the hole and onto step. I then gave it some nose down elevator to put it on the step and accelerate.........Just so you guys know the plane is really moving fast at this point and it looks like it really wants to fly. I pulled back slightly on the stick. The nose shot up..... I'm not sure if it was me or aft CG(balances at 85MM) or not enough nose down engine angle(Plane took off great on land) or what. I Lowered the nose slightly and danced with the ailerons and rudder to keep it from dropping a wing to the right....all with full power screaming. The plane finally flew out of the stall and I got it up in the air and trimmed it out. The thing flew awesome once it was airborne. Very Smooth and Stable. With one notch of flaps it almost seems scale or slower than scale!!!!! you have to use a bit of rudder in the turns and its not an aerobat. I can easily say it was the most fun I have ever had flying a RC airplane. The planes needed 4 or 5 clicks nose down trim at half throttle and flew plenty fast. Full throttle was way overkill just like it was with no floats. My landing was not my best but i got it down and taxied it back to the shore. I used one notch of flaps as I was not tempted to mess with it since it was flying so well. I was ecstatic! Anyways. I probably should have quit while I was ahead. My next takeoff I employed the same technique as my second one. I accelerated down the lake until the thing was really moving and looked like it wanted to fly. after a slight amount of back pressure the nose came up again. I was dancing with the sticks. Tail and Wings droping left and right. Pusing forward on the stick trying to get the thing to fly out of the stall the engine at full tilt.........but no luck. It dropped a wing quickly and dunked in the water. Thankfully I only bent a float strut. The engine hit the water and quit. Some fishermen brought it back to me. I was lucky.............. This airplane was never a light one without floats.(15 pounds) with floats its probably 19. But since it flew nicely once it was airborne I'm thinking my zenoah g26 is not pulling it with the authority it should during a climb. Im guessing I have it way over propped with the 16X10 3 blade on it and as soon as the nose comes up and its climbing its not pulling the thing like it could.....and thats why its stalling. There is a limit to how fast you can go on the water with these things..........it has to come out fairly quickly. The engine's benchmark is a 2 blade 16x8....I thought that I could get away with the 16X10 3 blade since this thing pulled with authority without floats. The 16x10 3 blade turns at about 7000 rpm. Will putting a 2 blade prop on this thing with less pitch make it more forgiving? My CG with floats is 85MM and it seems perfect to me once it if flying. The airplane looks like it handles on the water perfectly. I believe that my step is in the perfect spot. My wing incident is at 2.5 degrees. That seems perfect as it stays straight during the takeoff roll and it wont come off the What are your recommendations? Im guessing i need a better prop......

Scale/Semi-Scale Sea Plane Setups-PICS!!!
Guys, I'm Building Two Giant Scale Floatplanes. These are my First Floatplanes. A 83inch CMP Cessna 182 and a 91 inch CMP cub. Both are finshed and fly great on land. I'm Looking for pictures of your Setups mainly for Struts-bracketts-pulleys- Water Rudders ect....... LETS SEE SOME INSPIRATIONAL PICTURES !!!!!!!! I have Ralph "Seaplane" from Planefunfloats making 45 inchers for the Cessna and 42 inchers for the cub. I wanted to go with Structural Aluminum Tubing so I found this tubing from Glen Torrance Models........I ordered 12 feet of it just to be safe :-) http://www.flygtm.com/products.php?type=struts&kit=4000 I'm not Sure how Im going do to the bracketts or what to use for the Support cables that criscross between the Floats. (maybe rods and cleveses?) I have 4 Large size Ernst water rudders on order. I'm thinking obout ordering pulleys and cable for the pull pull rudders (I guess proctor pulleys are the way to go.......what size should I get?) Not Sure how to set up the retract servo/cables for the rudders. Anyways You guys should Have seen how long it look to do the lighting system for my Cessna. I want the Floats to look and function Just as good/realisticaly. Thanks for the tips. I'll post pics of the build as I go along. Here are a couple videos of my cessna and its Lights......it took a lot of time to get it to this point. :-) I'll get a video of the cub soon.

RE: FPV SURVEY
Guys, This PFV debate is so crazy. I fly REAL AIRPLANES for a living and I have never once worried about running into a foam easy star with a little security camera on it. Give me a break. There are way more Canadian Geese out there to worry about. If a terrorist uses a little RC airplane to cause damage they are stupid because they could cause way more damage with just about every other vehicle on the planet. All the old timer RC guys here take this crap way to seriously. I cant take out my .40 sized trainer at my AMA field without some half drunken 70 year old unshaven divorced guy bugging me about my weight and balance. He is making sure my plane is "safe"........ok there guy thanks for the inspection. The world is now safe from the scurge of my my Hobbico Nexstar. Just because flying a 4 pound toy is the coolest thing you have ever done does not mean you have to turn Model aircraft flying into something its not. These are still TOYS! Yes they are expensive, yest they are fast, and yes they could cause damage. But I can cause way more damage with my Volkswagen. And I can hit a kid with a line drive playing baseball and knock him out. I could slice a drive on the golf course and hit a car on the road and break a window causing a 10 car pile up. Do k you now anyone that was killed by a RC airplane? Thats right....No. If your not Climbing into it its not a vehicle. I love how the people that hate FPV somehow think line of sight is flying is safer. Tell me. How is flying a 30% Carden Extra 300 with a 100cc gas motor yards away from the flight line with people watching safer than a foam FPV plane? Flying away from the ground is safer than flying near the ground. If that Carden Extra looses RC it could fly miles and miles away on its own and crash into people and property also. The bottom line. The AMA is insurance guys. If your flying FPV your not insured, not less safe. Just keep the plane below 2000 ft agl 400ft to be legal and even safer. and more than 5 miles away from an airport and you wont hit a real plane. If you do hit a real plane below 2,000ft agl the pilot was scud running and flying unsafely anyways. If you think because you are at a AMA field and you can see your plane you have no chance of causing damage you are wrong. Thats my 2 cents. For what its worth. Just use common sense. Make sure your line of sight plane or FPV plane is reliable. Don't fly it in stupid places. Andy don't fly it recklessly... End of story. I know that people abuse FPV but people also abuse Line of sight. Just like people abuse everything else. Fly safe guys

Bigfella Thanks for the nice comments. All the lights were in the plane during the maiden but I had not put the batteries in her yet permanently. 2 days ago I soldered all the light circuits together in parallel and then installed them on a futaba RX switch. I have a 8cell 9.6v 2000mah Nimh battery pack on order so I can recharge the battery from a charge receptacle. Also I tried the lights with a fully charged 9.6V pack and WOW!!! that extra .6V combined with a fully charged pack really makes those lights bright. The ram lights were originally designed for a regular 9 volt battery.

Transmitter/Reciever Charging
Gents, I have 4 airplanes that my twin brother and I fly regularly. 2 are gas, 2 are nitro. we both have a significant amount of money invested in the gas airplanes so i'm concerned about making sure that our batteries are charged correctly. This is what we have 4- 4.8V Hibbico Hydramax 2000mah Nimh Batteries for ignition and RX on small airplanes 2-6.0VHibbico Hydramax 2000mah Nimh batteries for rx on big gas planes 2-9.6V 600mah NiCd;s in our futaba transmitters I have 2 newer wall wart chargers that came with our futaba 2.4 ghz radios and 2 older wall wart chargers for some old FM transmitters. I also purchased a Duratrax 245 quick charger recently so i could charge the planes at the field(capable of charging at .8amp 1.5amps 3.0amps and 5amps-then trickle charges after the peak is detected) Right now I have a analog Hibbico 4.8 and 9.6V expanded scale voltmeter that i'm thinking about replacing with a digital one so I can monitor the 6v packs. Can I quick charge these packs safely? Do I need to discharge them all the way? Should I leave them on the wall wart for a couple days every once in a while? Should I buy a cycler? Do the batteries need to be form charged? Any advice on how to charge use check and maintain these batteries would be great. I dont want to loose my beautiful planes because I quick charged them too much. Cheers

It would be nice to charge the 2 gas planes and the 2 transmitters at one time....maybe thats impossible. but a typical day of flying for me is to bring at least 2 gas planes, and 2 transmitters to the firld, I fly one and my brother flys the other right now I only have the 2 wall chargers that came with the transmitters to charge all of this stuff and its really getting old having to charge 2 reviever/ignition packs at a time over night. RE: CMP Cessna 182 Building Thread>the best scale Cessna 1.20 size ARF that is on the market!!!
Gents, I finished My CMP Cessna last night. Here are the final specs. Tru Turn Spinner (custom cut) 16X10 MAS 3 Blade propellor Zenoah G26 EI Great Planes Large Engine Anti-Vibration Engine Mount....with custom made standoffs Robart Nose Strut (wheel pant mounted) 2X Futaba Switches and 2X Earnst Charge Recepticles Complete RAM incandescent scale lighting system with Rotaing Beacon Landing lites Nav Lites Real Zenon Strobe lights 8 Futaba Servos 5X S3004 in wings and Throttle 2X S3305 High Torque Metal Grear dual elevator servos 1X S3010 High Torque Rudder/Nose wheel I used the standard hinges. All cleveses are sullivan 4-40 Golden Cleveses Flaps are going through a servo rate reducer and on a 3 position switch so they go down nice and slow. 1 2000mah 4.8V Ignition Battery 1 2000mah 6v Reciever Battery 7channel Futaba 2.4ghz FASST Reciever Rudder is a Sullivan Kevlar Pull Pull System (wich seems to work awesome) Elevators are still using pushrods mounted to the original wires in the back. I added a second servo next to the origial elevator servo by cutting a hole in the tray and adding some plywood......it looks great. I have each elevator half on its own servo and I replaced the original pushrods with Dave Brown Pushrods and 4-40 wires......wich are lighter, stronger, and I was worried about the security or the allen screws in the original pusrods. I have not epoxied the wing together yet.......I would like to avoid it If I can. I cant see how it could come off in flight with the struts on it......... Everything seems very strong when tightened down. The elevators still have a little bit of flex to them if you try to wiggle them around.....but its way better with 2 elevator servos and 2 4-40 pushrods than the stock set up. I dont htink the rods themselves flex much at all. Has anyone tried this set-up? I'll switch to pull pull or mount the pushrods on to controll horns if we have to. What do you guys think of my set up? I have not checked the CG yet. Seems like its going to balance nice with the gib 26cc gas engine. I am also looking for advice on controll throws, flap settings, and mixes. My elevators travel further than the TOP FLITE CESSNA recomondations but less than CMP recomends. Should I just set my plane up to the TOP FLITE specs? I'm worried that I will come in for the landing flare and run out of elevator authority. The Plane really looks awesome. I have spared no expense on making it nice. Thanks for all the advice guys!!!!! I'll post pitcures and a video or eveything tonight. Maiden Flight Video Soon!!!!!!! Sea Commander Floats are on Order!!!!!

RE: Zenoah G-26 Instalation
I set up the throttle stops correctly. I know the throttle is fully open and fully closed.....110% sure of that. I wish I could weld the manifold but it is plastic....... The engine came with a second square manifold that I can try tomorrow. Is it possible for this engine to idle low enough to not pull the plane on pavement? Are you guys using the velocity stack?

Zenoah G-26 Instalation
Hello, I have a zeonah g-26 with electronic ignition that I have installed on my 83inch cessna 182. Started it for the first time today. No cowell on the plane. Started easily and seemed to run verry smoothly. The problems I had were..... 1. I adjusted the idle screw till it was almost completely unscrewed. The idle was still way high.......enough to make the airplane taxi at a brisk walking pace. It definatly would move if you let go of it on pavement.........I have never owned a gas rc airplane engine but that seemed way to high. 2. the carb did not have the velocity stack on it(i'm debateing wether or not to use it) but when i throttles the engine up i could see a good smount of fuel misting (spitting) our of the carb intake. I was able to adjust the high and low screws to give the engine descent throttle response. Anyways concerned why the plane wasnt idleing low and spitting fuel I inspected the carb and saw the black spacer between the carb and the engine was cracked. It must have cracked when I was tightening it down. I just ordered a replacement. My mechanical knowledge is leading me te believe that the crack in the manifold would let enough air in to cause these 2 problems. Am I right? I have the engine inverted with the mixture/idle screws down. the throttle is attached to the opposite side of the factory installed throttle kinkage with the supplied controll arm screwed on the the brass throttle valve nub. Anyone else have pics of their installation. Mine seems to be working descently enough.

Lights
Hello, I am Installing a complete Ram lighting system on my 120 sized Cessna 182. Including Landing lights Nav Lights mars Beacon Real Strobes I was wondering how you guys fix these things to the wingtips ect. Are you useing tape or sillicone? I noticed that the little lenses look like they can slip on to and Grip the airplane. What is the best technique. Thanks
