RE: Band saw blades
Yeah, I have a Craftsman Radial Arm Saw with the electronic readout. The last time I put in a fresh battery, it didn't work. In fact, this was such a good way to go for Craftsman, this feature is no longer offered!

RE: NOTAM from Hell
ORIGINAL: frets24 During the ''festivities'' here in Charlotte over the past week I had a job not far from our field so I decided to go on over and take look around. There were two Dept of Homeland Security-Federal Police SUV's parked at the gate to the field. They eyed me pretty closely since the field is at the end of a deadend road but didn't move as I turned around and departed. Probably figured I was lost or missed the entrance to the city landfill 100yds prior to the field.
Our tax dollars at work!

RE: SIG Mark II Engine ?
One more thing for those considering the OS .46 LA, I have read good things about performing a Davis Diesel conversion on this engine. The engine reportedly produces more power and torque. The carb is perfectly sized for diesel, which reduces fuel consumption. Might be fun experimentation.

RE: Should a beginner buy a sealing iron?
One more point...... a clothes iron is heavier and harder to control. You may dent the wood by making contact with the iron, and the covering will stick if you pressed it into the dent! You just need to be very even handed and try not to let the weight of the iron rest on the aircraft.

I kinda have to side with RCU on this one. Sometimes you have to make a tough call on what supports our hobby and what doesn't. I just don't think it's wise to share "ideas" such as this broadly.

RE: Big jump in kit prices at Tower
Looks like some prices are unchanged and some have been raised. Maybe it's based on new kits costing more to manufacture????
PS I forgot to add YOU ARE IN COMPETITION WITH ALL YOUR SUPPLIERS not a good business model
Good one! I forgot that distributer Hobbico competes in the retail arena with Tower. They can drive you into the ground with pricing tricks. Web sales are driving brick & mortar stores into extinction.

RE: X-acto knife sharpening
Paul BB, I respect what you would like to do. Unfortunately, our culture here in the US leads us to a lot of disposables. A friend of mine transferred to the UK for work, and was surprised when she went to Tesco and tried to find paper towels that we use by the trillions every year. None were to be found because they use cloth towels and wash them when they get dirty. Maybe someday we'll get back to that standard!

RE: going to open my own lhs
I have to second Twin Flyer's thoughts above having been in the retail business myself. Having capital to invest in inventory is absolutely crucial. For a small shop, plan on investing at least $50,000 to have the products on hand that people want. You have to think clearly as well.... don't stock the stuff that you like or the stuff your rep is pushing. Do your research and stock what sells. Find ways to draw customers into your business and the hobby. Last but not least. have fun dealing with customers that will try your patience. Like the guy that wanted to know why our service price was low, he told me he thought it was because we were "too stupid not to charge more"....lol I bit my tongue. There is one in every crowd.

RE: Workshop
Dope Fiend - I'm sure you have heard the story before. An RV-6 seemed like a good idea at the time, but life responsibilities got in the way. I just don't have the time or inclination to jump on that again. R/C Satisfies my aviation needs now. When we lived in Crystal Lake IL, I was very active in EAA Chapter 790 out of Barrington. We had a chapter campout at Oshlosh every year. I also had a couple of partners in a Bonanza which was an amazing airplane to fly. Definitely nicer than any other I had flown before. It was fun, but my interests have shifted. Having a 4 place bird at my disposal definitely put the RV-6 on the back burner.

RE: Workshop
For outlets in an island table, I have a couple of overhead quad outlet boxes over my islands. When I need power, I have a few extension boxes with 4 foot cords that I plug in overhead when I need power. With this approach, I can unplug and move them out of the way when not in use. Dope Fiend - There used to be a HS teacher at Mundelein HS that completed several homebuilts with students. I have to assume you guys are acquainted. PS, I have an RV-6 empennage....stab, vertical fin, rudder and one elevator complete. One elevator to go. I would like to unload it. Maybe someone doesn't want to build an RV-6, but it would make a great learning tool for someone interested in building a monococque airframe!

RE: USPS, Service with a smile. The Sequel
Also be aware that when you ship "budget" UPS or FedEx, the USPS gets involved. UPS/FedEx delivers the package(s) to your local PO and the mail carriers move it on the final leg. So, you still have exposure if USPS mishandling is a concern.

I too enjoyed Mike's informative posts here on RCU. I hope Mike's family is in touch with this thread so they can see his life from the eyes of this RCU community. I hope it gives them some level of comfort during their grieving. Rest easy Mike!

RE: security at the field
One more "fun" suggestion: A company, I believe it's Firequest, sells a contraption that fires a 12 gauge blank via trip wire. Set up a couple of those and wait for the fun to begin. Now, if you manage to setup your cameras to get the perp in frame as he sets one off, you will have a viral youtube video. Especially the scene where he soils his pants. On a more serious note, I have serious respect for the men and women in the law enforcement profession. But, when seconds count, the police are minutes away. In fact, where we live, average response time is 30-45 minutes. I'm sure this is just as frustrating to them as it is to us. Therefore, it is solely our responsibility to provide the primary protection for lives and property.

RE: Auto Pilot and the death of R/C
The A/P may be able to fly the plane, but it better have some robust collision avoidance software. It's only a matter of time before someone or something gets in the way of an A/P flown airplane and the lawyers will have a field day! End of A/P!

RE: Where to live?
After living in Chicago for most of my life, my wife and I moved to SE Indiana to get away from that madness. I would rate IL right up there with CA for an example of government out of control. We live rurally, and I would have great difficulty going back to city life. Taxes are reasonable and you don't have the state constantly looking for ways to be a nanny to it's citizens. Having said that, we're starting to look ahead to retirement, and the US is becoming undesirable in terms of costs and freedoms lost. We will soon be going to check out the Dominican Republic as a destination. Cost of living is lower and the nation wants to draw in residents. Plus, you can get a decent hand-rolled cigar there :) For you second amendment fans like myself, one can legally own and carry a handgun. My .02.

WOW, I am really sorry to hear that some of your wives despise your hobby. I am truly blessed, because my wife encourages my hobby. We had a mess in the basement after closing our business and she spent a day last week organizing that mess so I could get to the workbench and get ready for some spring flying. She is my BEST FRIEND and she is absolutely awesome!
