RE: Kyosho 1:8 scale, What are the best mods?
hi any one know where i can get a battery from for my HOR Honda NSR500? got it out after 3 years and the battery only lasts a few mins, its an old nicad, been to maplins for some batts but they are smaller, plus the fact i have to build a pack, so if anyone knows where i can get one from, or someone who could build one for me. cheers Kev

RE: Some KT questions
i bought one of these kt's with the single motor, i fitted Impact TU's Impact heavy duty metal tracks (look awesome and weigh a lot) then fitted Heng long RX18 electronics. The gearboxes are noisy (all steel gears) so the tank running sound is a little weak. Runs ok, but struggles a little on grass surface. Have now fitted more powerful motors, which is a little better. Im sure if i fit the plastic tracks, it will run even better, but the metal tracks look good. Connected a PC speaker to the RX 18. don't think it will be as good as the Tamiya DMD setup but its certainly cheaper. gearbox was £110 tracks were £95 RX18 £17 (already had the heng long transmitter) upgrade motors were £8 each. You can get cheaper metal tracks now, and probably the gearboxes as well. Kev

RE: Your Tamiya King Tiger ideas please
I too bought a vintage KT, i junked the twin clutch system and fitted Impact Gearboxes, then i used an old RX14 board from an old Heng Long tiger with the transmitter and replanted all the gear into the KT. I even used the elevation unit from the tiger and made it work inside the KT turret. It runs fine, i then fitted Impact high grade tracks and it runs great. I may even upgrade to Elmod and may even try a recoil unit. Still works out cheaper than buying a new KT.... Hope it helps Kev

RE: Impact King Tiger Tracks
i agree with Sevoblast, Impact tracks are so well made, you don't have to mess around 'running' them in, they really are that good! I had the same question for Impact when i bought my Impact gearbox, i asked if i should run them in with 'tooth/cutting paste'? the reply was 'are you mad? it would be like putting sand in the gearbox of your car. Just some light oil or light grease and just run them. I use motorcycle chain lube, the antiflig type, it works a treat. If you can afford them, i recommend the impact parts, i may even upgrade to the impact suspension!!!! Kev

Hmmm.....i didnt think of that, but i do have a 4600 battery powering my KT, i did have the same battery in my tiger1 and the also have high quality metal tracks, and it lasted 3 hours and still wasnt flat!!! if i can get over an hour i will be happy [;)] cheers Kev

Impact King Tiger Tracks
Hi just fitted my Impact King Tiger Tracks, WOW they are so well made, worth the money. The castings are so good, no rough bits at all. They do weigh a lot, but i have impact gearboxes with support bearings so im not worried about wear on the boxes. Just need to give it a run outside, get some soil into them, make them looked used... well pleased got them from Welsh Dragon Models......the guy is tops for support and service.... Kev

RE: Gearbox troubles
treat yourself (or the tank) to some Impact gearboxes, yes they are expensive, but very well made (out of steel) and NO they don't need toothpaste break in!!!!!! I put a set in my KT, correct scale speed and loads of power.....just ordered a set of Impact metal tracks..... Kev

RE: Blown boards rx13 & rx14
one board blew turning round on soil, it didn't get stuck, just turning round.....the other climbing up a little kerb (about 2 inches high) which id climbed up loads of times, that time was a real smoker, there was smoke pouring out of the rear engine vents, i walked up to it and open the front drivers hatches and smoke pouring out of there as well. But on strip down could i hell as find the burnt components......very strange and no it wasn't the smoker as it was disconnected. I must tell you, the 3rd RX13 board i used (then swapped to a RX14) which i still have, i turned it up so the tin heat sink was on top, and it does get hot......i drilled small holes in it to try to disperse heat, but read on here that the 14 boards were better, i just ordered 2 and stuck it in straight away, fingers crossed, its still ok and so is the King Tiger i converted with the same gear. hope this helps Kev

RE: Blown boards rx13 & rx14
Nitroassasin i can see where your friend has put the fan above the RX13 board in the photo, i to did this, complete waste of time, it only blows air onto the bottom of the board and not onto the transistors/heat sink that is fitted to the RX13 board. Best thing to do, is fit a RX14 board like i explained. Where the board is fitted upside down in the base of the tank, there isnt enough room for a constant air flow around the chips/transistors heat sink. I fried 2 RX13 boards like this and i even fitted a lump of alloy that sat below the board and superglued to the RX13 tin heat sink, as a remedy to increase surface area trying to drag heat away from the board. where it is now, there is plenty of air flow, just junk your smoker, they don't last long anyway. Even the new RX18 boards need cooling, if i upgrade to a RX18 board for any reason, i will remove if from its plastic case and mount it under a fan. Kev

RE: Blown boards rx13 & rx14
if you don't use the smoker, remove it, place it in the nearest bin. Now mount the RX14 board (with plastic motherboard posts) where the smoker used to be face up. Get some SDRAM memory heat sinks (from Maplins or a good electronics shop) and fix them either side of the mosfets. Then get a Socket 7 cpu fan (it doesnt matter about it being 12volt) and mount it behind the RX board on the back of the battery box using two of the holes in the fan. The fan should blow over the heat sinks that are stuck to the mosfets. I have this setup and ive run my Tiger 1 for 3 hours solid using a 4600 battery and pushed it quite hard. It seem to be ok, and its still going strong, in fact i have converted my Tamiya King Tiger to HL electronics with the same fan setup. ps wire the fan to the smoker output, but don't forget to switch it on. the fan will start running once the tank is running (when head light stops flashing) hope this helps Kev

same thing here, i had 3 burnt boards, tried the same thing, swopping out transistors......never worked!!!! gave up, i suggest you invest in a RX14 board, they are much better. Kev

RE: cooling fans
Does your smoker work? if not i placed my RX14 board in its place, i used some plastic posts to hold the board onto the base (same thing that holds a motherboard away from the metal casing) i then fitted a Pentium CPU fan onto the very back of the battery box, using two of the mounting hole on the fan and drilling the same hole in the edge of the battery box, two bolts hold it in place, i then got a packet of Ram memory heat sinks and stuck them on both sides of the mosfets on the RX14 board. I used the wiring which powered the smoker and just wired the fan to the smoker output on the RX14 board, this way once you start the tank, the CPU fan doesnt sap power straight from the battery, the fan starts after the tank headlights stop flashing. I you do a search on my name, i did post some photos of what i did, but cant find them on my pc!!!! I have just done a similar thing after converting my Tamiya King Tiger to Heng Long electronics. it works a treat Kev

RE: Weathered King Tiger....comments please
just found this recipe on a web site for a magic wash..........what colour should i mix with this to cover the tank in? Magic Wash Hello, fellow figure painters. I believe I have finally found the perfect "wash" for miniature figures. A few weeks ago I admired some Boxer war figures of local painter here in Southern California. "Dow the Programmer" told me how to make his "Magic Wash", and I have been trying it out recently. I am stoked by it. Magic Wash blows the doors off of every other wash technique I have ever used! And it is so inexpensive as to be negligible! And it is easier than most other wash techniques! Here is the recipe: Buy a bottle of "FUTURE acrylic floor finish for non-wax and regular floors" by Johnson & Son. In the U.S. it comes in big 800 ml (72 ounce) clear plastic squeeze bottles for about $7, and was available in both supermarkets I checked. This is more than I can probably use in a lifetime. The clear liquid inside is slightly more viscous than water. I imagine there are similar products in other countries, and I recommend that we identify them. Pre-mix some of the FUTURE, one part of acrylic finish to four parts of water. This is the Magic Wash stock. I made mine up in a liter sealable milk bottle. Making a clear stock up ahead of time allows the small bubbles which can result when mixed with water to subside over time. Devote one brush to be the Magic Wash brush. I don't know if this is really necessary, but it seems safer to me, since the formula of the FUTURE finish is different from those of our acrylic paints. When you are ready to use it, mix a little of the Magic Wash stock with a small amount of your chosen pigment. Stir it with your brush, don't shake it. I have successfully used inks and acrylic paints as pigments. Brush over your figures and allow to dry. It dries just about as quickly as acrylic paints. It sucks the pigment right down into the crevasses and keeps it there. Doesn't let it "osmosis" back up. And the high areas remain remarkably clear ! I have used black, dark brown, and light tan (for white marble). And Magic Wash even gives a hard protective coating !! It's not too shiny, but a final coat of dullcote often makes the figures look better to my eye. What DON'T I like about it? Well, I've mentioned the little bubbles, with a method for avoiding them. The only other "problem" is that, if you tend to lick your brush while painting, the stuff tastes TERRIBLE !! So I have given up that habit when using Magic Wash. Future is available only in the United States. However it is sold under other names, or there are similar products, available in other countries. United Kingdom: Klear or Krystal Klear Netherlands: Pronto Wax for Wood Floors or Parket Plus France: Klir Germany: Erdal Glanzer Australia: Pledge One Go Xtracolour, which makes military hobby paints, make "Acrylic Gloss Clear" which seams to be repackaged Future. If your country is not listed, check your local supermarket for a clear, acrylic-based floor polish.

RE: Weathered King Tiger....comments please
no problem Alpha, this is the sort of feedback i need, but don't forget this is my first attempt at anything like this. I do agree i should have painted the decals on and i have just removed them, i will practice trying to paint them on. As for the overall finish, how would you suggest i go about applying a wash to dampen down the camo? i have just wiped over the tank with a damp sponge which has removed 'high lights' as you call them. I was wondering if the mud was a on the light side? i have ordered some Dullcote to spray over the tank, would i be better applying this before attempting to weather it? i have put a little mud on the wheels, i am saving for a set of metal tracks, i will probably put some mud on them, even run it outside in some mud!! hi i bought some tamiya weathering kit yesterday, i have ordered a tin of Dullcote and will cover it once i have finished weathering. I want to bend/damage the side skirting, have you any suggestions on how to do this without damaging it to much, e.g. melting it with a heat gun?? Kev

RE: When breaking in gears.......
i take it these are Heng Long boxes you are running it with 'tooth paste/grinding paste' ? i fitted a set of impact boxes and asked this question to the supplier about running in the boxes with paste type materials, he passed me straight onto a guy at Impact. He asked me if i was mad!!! tooth paste, he said it was like putting sand in a car gearbox, something you should never do. He told me to use any sort of lube, i suggested motorcycle chain spray (it sticks like sticky goo and doesn't fling off like normal grease does) he said that would be ideal. All i had to do was connect them up to battery and run them for 30 mins, then fit them to the tank. He also said the boxes would quiet down after a while, which i would agree with. Kev

RE: paint mixing tips please
yea i see what you mean, i will have a look round in some model shops, the decals i have used are from a heng long tank, i would like to paint them on but the largest font size i have is 72dpi and not big enough (was hoping to make a stencil) the cost of the decals is ridiculous in this country, cheapest i have seen are £20 which is around 30-35$ ??? I may practice freehand as some photos i have seen of tiger tanks, it was roughly painted on by the crew... thanks again Kev

RE: paint mixing tips please
thanks, i have been putting the accessories back on shovel, hammer tow ropes etc. I'm not sure how to weather it though, i have mixed black, a rust colour, and dry brushed them with a little silver paint added to the brush then dabbed off onto a tissue and painted then exhaust pipes and im quite pleased with the results, it looks like a 20,0000 mile exhaust pipe.....i may take the German stickers of and make a stencil and paint them on.... any ideas on how to weather it would be appreciated. as for battle damage i thought of driving down my drive and deliberately scraping it down the brick wall as to damage the side skirting, then paint a little rust paint where the scrape marks would be, what do you think??? i would like to put some shell marks on the hull maybe some bullet holes in the skirting, but don't really know how to do it, Ive seen someone on here use a dremmel (i have one) but they can be violent at times, another guy used a soldering iron and just 'dent' the hull, it really did look like a shell mark but im scared of making a mess now Ive got this far......plus the wife would kill me with all the moaning and complaining and money Ive spent on paints etc......LOL a friend of mine who is into model trains told me to get a piece of lint free cloth, spray some brown paint on lightly and wipe it in the direction of travel from front to back of the tank, he said he did this with his trains to make them look dirty....... thanks guys, im starting to feel good about what ive done.....thanks.....[;)] Kev

RE: paint mixing tips please
you really thinks so Delta 3 ?????? no i did it all by hand, i tried masking it off but the paint ran underneath the masking tape, so all i did was get a small brush and go over where it had bled on the green, i ran over all the green with the brush then painted the brown with the brush. i was quite disappointed with it, the wife said it looked ok, but i was told these tanks were painted by really young men, who sometimes used anything they could get there hands on, brush, mop, spray gun whatever as the life of a tank was not that long!! i suppose if it looks messy, it will look authentic. I have seen a KT on this site which the guy must have spent a small fortune on (unfortunately i cant) and it looks like a real tank, hours and hours must have gone into it. I don't have the skill, time or money to make it how i want it...... thanks for your comments. Kev

TS-3 Dark Yellow - 85003 = XF-60 Dark Yellow? if these are the same colours, i can use spray cans ok, they are already mixed!!!! either that or someone around the Sheffield area can paint if for me? i will pay no worries......Ive spent some time and money on making the KT work, i just want it to look good painted. cheers Kev

RE: paint mixing tips please
AH...HAAAA!!! went to a model shop today, got some more tamiya paints, i asked guy in the shop for some tamiya thinners, sorry mate, haven't got any, just use water, or you can use car screen wash!!!! yea, i was gob smacked as well. Car screen wash i asked? are you sure, he said it was all he ever used with tamiya paints, he also said turn the pressure down with the regulator on top of the compressed air can (which a few people on here told me to do)..........SUCCESS !!!!!!!!! it works like a treat, all i did was open the bottle of tamiya paint, top it up to the brim with Car screen wash, shook it up, gave it a stir then attached a new tin of propellant, turned the valve on top while pressing the button on the spray gun, a fine mist of paint. I have repainted the KT body work with Dark Yellow again, covering all the spatters etc. Now i need some tips on how to paint the Green and Brown camo without over spray......any tips? i will practice with the spray gun first to try and draw a line before going any where near the KT. At least im getting somewhere.......but car screen wash to thin down tamiya paint?????? thanks for everyone's help, much appreciated. Kev
