RE: opinion EDF
If you like scale profile the e-flite is the only scale intake but it is not retract ready. I'd go with the HET myself because I hate belly landing jets and jets with fixed gear.

Have you tried any of the chaper alternatives? topgun600 too bad that's not the truth, you don't always get what you pay for. I have several of the cheap motors and they work fine and will perform The equal of Hoffman; they're not on par with a Nue but neither is the Hoffman. Nue will stand behind his and rebuild it for a reduced cost even if it is your fault. The main point is that outrunners can easily be repaired if parts are available for purchase which is not the case with a discontinued product. The motors I'm talking about are here, here and here.

There is nothing wrong with selling out your stock but a noobie won't know they're out of prodiction and they would be the most likely to need replacement parts. They are good quality but not worth anywhere near the MSRP. The competition is fierce right now with good quality outrunner EDF motors coming out of China for 1/5 the price.

$79.00 is a deal? $199 for a 70mm fan and motor? you can get the equivlent motor to the mightty might for way less than 79 and a Wemo minifan and a Nue motor to fit it would be less and a lot better than the Hoffman Beast. You might want to check out this thread before buying one too. Hoffman is out of the RC business. Since your a vendor you really should have it listed on your signature.

The big screamer is larger than the scorpion and should handle the power easier. The scorpion would be ligher but near it's limits on 12s.

RE: EDF jet motors
Picking a motor needs to start with the fan you intend to use. Once you know the fan and figure out the model you want to run it in research the fan unit on forums and find the power required to give you at least 75% thrust to weight. You can go a little less for planes with lower wing loadings and need to go higher for more heavily loaded ones. (think A-10 vs. F-104) The trickiest thing about EDFs is you can't adjust just select a different pitch or diameter to match your requirements, you have to match your power system to the fan in increments of cell voltage. for instance; say you have a 64mm fan with a 4000kv motor that pulls 25 amps on 3S and 40 amps on 4s, if the plane needs 300 watts to fly and the motor can only handle 30 amps you can't use that motor on this setup. You will need to either get a motor with the same Kv and a higher maximum amp draw (heavier) or a higher Kv for use on 3s or a lower kv on 4s. A word about motor selection; in general heavier handles more power (wattage); outrunners have better cooling so handle more watts per unit weight; higher Kv motors handle higher amps but higher voltage is more efficient. Test your fan setup on the ground to be sure what it will do. flying by at 100+ mph is a bad time to find out your setup is cooking your ESC. Test your setup on the ground by using a wattmeter and an IR temp meter or temp probe. run up the motor and check your readings to make sure your within reasonable parameters.

RE: Electric Retracts - Modifying existing Air/Servo-operated Retracts
I'm not sure Larry. You could use a programmable controller to interpret the pwm in and a stepper driver at each actuator to drive them with out the need for feedback.

RE: Electric Retracts - Modifying existing Air/Servo-operated Retracts
ORIGINAL: FliteMetal My point clearly goes over the head of those focused on what to them appears as an electronic issue. In reality "every electric retract" that has ever been sold has failed due to mechanical issues. ECU's are necessary to control a system, however unless the mechanical design is capable of enduring real world use and normal abuse, there is no usable system.
Lose the superiority complex pal, I read your posts and don't agree with you. The mechanical aspects are child's play compared to the power and control issues, but the point seems to go right over your head; there is a valid meaningful discussion going on here and it is not centered around you. If this is an example of the way you contribute to causes you must be a very lonely person.
ORIGINAL: FliteMetal A sincere need exists for an electronic retract "capable of surviving" normal use. This requires encasement or enclosure of the screw jack mechanism. A sheath is needed to slide over the frame to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the screw path mechanics.
Stop storing your plane outside! and do a bit of maintenance occasionally. Phil Kraft's design worked great for it's day as long as you had a decent battery and could land without bouncing like a kangaroo, it's weakness was the lack of a sophisticated control system and the weight of the batteries of the day, not an issue with modern lipolys
A sliding center support similar to a fishing reel spooler could contribute a great deal to prevent misalignment, warping, and bending as the screwjack pulls the length of screw travel. This could easily travel a parallel path... mounted or recessed into the frame. Its a mechanical issue guys...work through the mechanical then design an ECU to control it.
Good Idea! Why not just suggest this and not try to run the thread? Mechanical first? power and control first? tomato tomoto... Converting an existing retract implies DIY. If it's not, why post here in the public domain?

RE: Can I run?
If you put 2 - 3s packs in series you'll end up with a 6s 1800mah pack, you'd have to put them in parallel to get more capacity as a 3s2p 3600. When you go down in voltage(such as 4s to 3s) the amps also fall which will allow you to use the smaller capacity batteries if they have the discharge rating. Someone needs to go back and take a look at Ohms's law before offering advice

RE: Can I run?
The answer is going to depend on a lot of details you have not supplied. Most important, which ESC do you have? I have one that is opto (no BEC) that will run on 4s but not on 3s and another that will run on 2s to 6s and has a uBEC that will power the radio the same regardless and still another that will handle from 2s to 12s but has no BEC. If you have an optocoupled ESC you muct have a seperate power supply for your radio e.g. a battery or stand-alone BEC. Your RPMs will decrease by roughly 25% and the thrust by more like 33%. Which f16 is it? What is the all up weight? What is the wing loading? What are your battery specs?(C-rating; capacity) What fan? Going to to lower voltage will not tax a bec more, just the opposite if it is a linear BEC the higher voltage will require the excess to be convertied to heat and a switching BEC(uBEC) it will not matter at all.

RE: Duced Fan Problems
The motors will beep to give you information, that is normal. The ESC is actually playing the motor like a speaker. Different brands have different meanings e.g. the castle creations will play a tune that will not complete until a full low signal is received, the tune includes a dash for each cell detected. The throttle channel may need to be reversed. Most ESCs have a lock out to prevent the throttle from coming on unless the stick has been in the full off position once.

RE: Duced Fan Problems
You say upgraded, did you upgrade the ESC to an optoisolated? If so you won't be able to move your servos either until you add a bEC or radio battery. - I just read you message a little more closely , without the anntena it won't get the signal; if it is like the HK it should just screw on the top.

RE: electric conversion.
I have two of the turnigy 100 and had a hextronix 120, the turnigy are great, they hold up well and keep up at high RPM but the Hextronix is only 6S capable and too slow for EDFs. You can buy the Turnigy from the US ware house and get it faster with cheaper shipping, although the price is higher, after the shipping is figured in the price is about the same. Just a note, in case you didn't already know, Don't extend the battery wires if you can help it and not much if at all; It is much better to extend the motor wires just keep the lengths identical. If you have to extend the battery wires you'll need to add capacitors to the esc end.

I wouldn't buy a rtf for that price but the gear is usually junk, but you could piece together a decent combo for that if you already have the battery/charger/Tx/Rx. I have one of [link=http://www.nitroplanes.com/78a71-sr71-black-kit.html]these[/link] SR-71s that is very nice for the price add a couple of [link=http://www.hobbypartz.com/75m91-ducted-2015-4000.html]these 4000 Kv edf motors[/link], a 4S battery that can handle 70 amps, 5 - 9gm servos and a couple of 40A or better speed controls and your in business.
