I wouldnt advise veneer for anyone who isnt skilled with it,even i dont like using it especially on curved surfaces and i used to use it in my work as a boat builder.I would steer away from it and use the stuff i showed, looks just as good in fact id say better as i doubt he would get as good a finnish using veneer which for me is a skill in itself. Its way less work and will work out cheaper ''BONUS'' [;)]. Yea its printed right onto the cloth so you just add resin, then you could wet sand it smooth and use some polyurethane varnish to get a great finish, some of the patterns available look great maybe the little fishes would look good [:D]. Mart

I agree with Scott but instead of veneer you might want to try this stuff its a printed cloth and looks just like real wood.I will be trying some in the new year for sure, way easier to do than messing with veneer which is a PITA on curved surfaces. Now im with you mate but honestly dont worry too much about it i think your doing a great job on the build. So its been more difficult than maybe you expected ,all i can say is that looking at how well you have done shows just what a good kit this is because if you can do it anyone can [:D].That last bit was a joke lol. I agree with Joe the alumium pipes will keep things cooler for sure, anyway keep up the good work and most of all enjoy it. Mart ps its usually me that gets missunderstood [:D]

Mate i havent seen your posts as been negative or giving the impression that these kits are difficult?.While i agree the kit is pretty straightforward its not what id call easy for someone who has never built a wooden boat before. For anyone skilled or semi skilled in woodwork or model building then sure its pretty easy.I can fully understand why your been extra carefull with the build and remember the only dumb question is the one you never ask [;)].Keep asking questions and enjoying the build mate, the pipe i think Joe sells is from Johhny in China and the reason the o rings leak is they use a different kind to our usual ones. Not sure which ones Joe sells with the pipes but the ones that come with them are green and different thickness to most ive seen.Maybe ask Johhny about it?,hes quick to deliver and have never had a problem with his gear. If your cowling is one of the early ones and isnt white then its epoxy and yes use epoxy and stiffen it up ,thats what i did but to be honest it only needs it on either end the rest is pretty good.Even if its white and polyester resin you can use epoxy on it no problem,i know some cowls are now white but mine was epoxy and i think yours will be as its an older one [;)]. Yes you quoted part of what i said as in edited it (shortened and emited the full answer) so no you didnt quote me fully now did you dohh .So what dont you understand then? i said neither a strut nor a stinger will cause a hull to run wetter or drier more than the other its all about the setup of either one ? in other words it makes no difference which one you use as both do the same job. Some prefer stingers some struts its all personal choice. How do you lose your settings when greasing your cables with a strut ? they just slide out simple as.Ive not lost a prop yet thats what prop savers are for. Mart

RE: Does the Stinger need to be Off-Set?
ORIGINAL: Nosedragger
neither one will make a hull run wetter or dryer than the other
Not quite, you can raise and lower the angle on a surface drive to raise and lower the bow on a properly balanced hull. Surface drives came about to move the prop further aft, you can't get the prop far enough back with a strut on many boats. Where the best prop location is in relation to the transom depends on the hull, the prop and water conditions. There is no hard and fast rule to which is better for any boat, but specific boats will favor one over the other.
Of course you can alter the angle [8|]but my point is just because you run one or the other wont make the hull run wetter or dryer than the other,i think youve missunderstood what i said ?.Please try reading my whole post instead of editing what i said and taking it out of context then you might understand better what i said .I think the key part of what i said is the bit you missed out '' ITS ALL IN THE SETUP ''not wether its a stinger or a strut.Either setup can be adjusted to trim the boat thats obvious. Never had any problems with been able to get a strut far enough back from the transom in fact struts can be moved as far back as you want if you use a long standoff bracket. If you want it 6" back use a long standoff if you want it 10" use a longer one,try doing that with a stinger [:D]. RE: Does the Stinger need to be Off-Set?
Also the new longer extended stingers are just as fast as a strut by all accounts although ive yet to try one to compare,if its only a sports boat then go with whichever suits you.Stingers are obviously a little easier to adjust but as Dicko says neither one will make a hull run wetter or dryer than the other its all in the setup, ballance of the hull not to mention the hull itself. Some hulls run wetter than others but that can be an advantage in rough water when they come alive without the problem of flipping so easily.Allways check your hulls for hooks from the transom to arround 10-12" forward, any low spots (hooks) create suction which makes the hull run wet.Any bumps can make them act wierd also, these are called rockers. Works great, you just have to be careful to not overdo it and really burn the wood. DD, the boat's starting to look really good, but what's with the helper? I never get that lucky[X(]
Yea but poplar doesnt have much grain worth showing off in my opinion so i felt it a waste of time really.Id rather have used a better ply to begin with but as i say i was just keen on getting her wet so went with paint.Actually though sometimes actually burning the wood so it blackens it then varnishing it makes for a great look so maybe experiment on some scrap pieces from the kit and see what you can come up with ,just dont turn it to charcoal [:D].Has anyone tried this product before its glass cloth but has wood print printed on it,looks great its on my to do list for sure, certainly easier than using veneers on curved surfaces which is a real pain [:@]. Nothing ugly about a scoop made from a spoon plenty have done it and it works very well its neat and its the correct shape in fact better than the clam shell ones you can buy if you find the right one,ive certainly seen many uglier intakes thats for sure but to each his or her own.Electrical tape isnt ideal to cover the plug and not something i would recomend he will most likeley get zapped which isnt a very nice experience trust me.
