RE: Sig Koverall
Thanks for the quick response! I probably should have let the fill coats dry longer before reapplying. A subsequent coat applied later this morning seems to have flowed and evened out the areas I was worried about. I did use the ModPodge to "seal" the wood ("Base coat, sanded" step) by brushing an undiluted coat over all exposed wood and allowing to dry. As you can see from my numbers, the way I did this added as much weight to the part as the fabric itself. What technique do you use to control the amount of absorption when sealing? Should I wipe it on/off with a rag instead? I appreciate the guidance,

RE: Sig Koverall
Hello JEB, I just finished working through your ModPodge process on a disposable wing half from a buddy's crashed ARF. Thanks for posting your method, and giving me a starting point. I am using 100% polyester dress lining from the craft store. The material weighs 4.4g/sq ft and shrinks fine. I am using a disposable HD foam brush to apply the ModPodge thinned to a "milk" consistency. The weight is piling on fast, and I haven't even started putting color on. I am heading for a finished density of 16g / sq ft, about twice that of a Monokote finish! See the enclosed spreadsheet for measured weights, normalized to g / sq ft. A handful of topics I would like to discuss: 1. I am having a lot of trouble filling the weave evenly without leaving streaks/blotches. These would show through the color if I were to proceed with the wing as it is. 1a. Can this be fixed with another brush coat? 1b. Have you tried spraying this stuff? 2. Is There an effective way to seal the wood at the beginning, so I can avoid soaking a ton of glue into the wood surface? Have you tried using a sanding sealer? 3. How long does the ModPodge need to cure before it stops feeling tacky? 4. Do you have experience spraying latex finishes on this surface? Do you recommend a primer, or can I go directly to the color coats?

RE: OMP Hybrid and MVVS 58
It took a while, but I finally got my replacement Hybrid in the air this morning. HS5955TG on aileron and rudder, HS5985 on elevators. Dual 2s1100 A123 batteries for power. Evolution 58 turning a Mejzlik 26x8 up front for power. I have uploaded a comprehensive set (92) of build pics for this project to my Picasa page: [link]http://picasaweb.google.com/martyg77/OMPHybrid2010?feat=directlink[/link] Notable improvements from the kit: 1. Spring loaded latch for tool-less canopy removal 2. Tool-less wing attachment using thumbscrews 2. Fiberglass cowl (To make working up there a little easier) 3. Canister exhaust embedded inside fuselage With the light wing loading and huge prop this thing is a winner, just like my last one. IMO, this plane and the (discontinued) Yak kits are OMPs finest flying airplanes.

I keep a couple of old large bath towels in the shop to sand on. These aborb a phenomenal amount of dust, and keep the bottom surface of the piece from being damaged while working . Once you are done, take the towel to the back yard and shake it out to clean it.

RE: Alternative to spot putty?
Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Filler works great for me. http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/A40266.htm Thin with water to the consistency of ketchup before applying. Much better than the latex based "lightweight" fillers. This product reportedly works well for filling pinholes in fiberglass. (I haven't had a chance to try this yet) http://www.darrolcady.com/Accessories/Painting_FAQ/painting_faq.html I would not recommend using automotive spot putty on bare wood. (Dries too hard, toxic solvents)

RE: OMP 80" fusion
Just a quick follow-up to my earlier post since I am passing through here. The 80" Fusion has been more or less my number one plane for the last 6 weeks. At this point, I have about 10 gallons through this thing. A 16-oz tank gives me 30 minutes of hovering and 3D, so yes this is a lot of flying. (Weather has been great here) The Evolution 35cc motor and pipe on a 20x8 has once again proven to be a perfect combination for this class of profile. It takes about 3 gallons of break-in before everything settles in, but patience and careful tuning will be well rewarded. The quiet pipe is very neighbor friendly, and provides smooth progressive power from just above idle to wide open. I dont have exact RPM numbers to post, but hover is below 1/2 and pullout is solid, and that's all that matters. A couple of points to supplement the comments made in my earlier post: 1. CG on the plans is right on the money, but start a bit forward while you get the plane dialled in 2. Lateral balance is critical on these profiles, especially with a big motor hanging off on one side. No problems structurally after 40-50 hours of stick bashing. Build it the way Mike has specified. No need to "reinforce" anything. The rudder is a lot more effective on this plane than I anticipated. Much more than what I have been used to on other OMP planes. Now that I have everything dialled in, I am having a blast with all kinds of knife-edge maneuvers. I like it! I was apprehensive about this plane at the beginning, (I prefer the shorter-coupled "floater" profiles) but this one has really grown on me! If you aspire to hucking the 50-100+ cc fatties, and are looking for a practice plane, this is the one for you. My replacement OMP Hybrid is going to be ready in a few weeks, and with both of these in my hangar I will be in 3D heaven.
ORIGINAL: XJet I don't buy from OMP. One bad experience was enough.
I have personally built almost all of OMPs kits. Some of them flew so well I built another after wearing out the first one. Sorry to see some of you guys are having problems, and Mike and the rest of the OMP staff can't seem to satisfy you. Speaking for myself, I am convinced these kits and the support are an excellent value, and I definitely plan on buying more. BTW, in my opinion, the 65" Yak is the finest flying 3D airplane you can find anywhere. The 92" Hybrid ranks right up there as well.

RE: Dan Santich Ultra Hots
I built one three years ago directly from the plans. This is a very nice flying airplane. You will be very happy with the result. The only irregular parts in this plane are the wing ribs, and as it is a constant chord wing, you only need to make one set of templates. Everything else is cut directly from standard sheet and stick stock. So really no reason for a "kit" for this one. (Would be a waste of money IMO) Just buy the wood and start cutting! See this thread for some background info. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=3831769 I also posted a materials list (Attachment.txt) there to help you get started. Good luck and post some pictures!

RE: 40cc size Aerobatic Kits. Would you??
I had one with a DA-50, and it was way too much power. Would have been perfect with a ZDZ 40, BME 44, or Brison 2.4. Great flyer apart from that. Landing gear area was quite fragile as originally engineered - You may want to reinforce this area.

This gap is normal. If you order a new assembly they will look like this after the first run. The reeds seal immediately from the pulse of air on the piston downstroke, even with this small gap.

RE: OMP 80" fusion
Is it a hardcore 3D profile? Is it a pattern plane? I'm having too much fun flying this thing to care. Evolution 35 engine with factory tuned pipe spinning a 20x8. (I have a 22x6 to try later as well) Although very heavy, this is a a great powerplant for this size profile. (It's my second one of these) Hitec digitals all around on 2s A123 receiver battery. Weight is about 13lb with the heavy motor. Rx battery in the back to balance. Still flies gingerly at this weight, although with the thinner wing this plane will never be a floater like the Edges or Hybrid. All-around performance looks promising, although I am taking it easy while the motor breaks in. Maiden run was cut short during second flight due to a bad rudder servo or wiring. (Broken prop, airframe is intact) But this one looks like a keeper, just like the 80in Edge and Yak. Sure to keep me amused until I get my replacement Hybrid in the air. No complaints about the wood. Laser cutting was first class. Instructions are more than adequate for intermediate builders. Build gallery is here: http://picasaweb.google.com/martyg77/OMP80inFusion

RE: OMP Hybrid and MVVS 58
After 11 months and several hundred flights (40-50 gallons) I finally piled it in this afternoon. Hybrid owners/builders, carefully check your wing tube sleeve caps inside your wings. These are the 1/8" balsa sheet parts which keep the wing tube centered on the aircraft. If one of these go, the wing tube will slip sideways, and you will fold a wing. I am neither angry or sad - They all have their number and I got my money's worth out of this one. In fact, I have nothing but good things to say about this airplane. (I ordered another kit last week) As soon as I get my giant Fusion done, I'll build a replacement and move my gear into the new one.
