RE: pica or top flight p-51
One very important that everyone is leaving out. Bang the Pica and you have to rebuild from scratch. Bang the TOP-FLITE and you call tower for the part. PICA is not in bussiness anymore and COX is not producing the kit. If you want it to look more scale there are updates for the TOP-FLITE P-51. I had a Pica a few years ago and now I have 3 GS. TOP-FLITE P-51's flying and I will take them any day over the Pica. Buy the ARC and make the updates if you want it more scale. thanks BOB

RE: Top Flight P-51 1/5 scale hinge points
I have built a number of their GS. P-51's the only modification you need to do is shorthen the outside hinges on the aierlons . and the rudder you can use CA. hinges I have not had one failure in approx. 10 yrs flyong their P-51's with their set up. In fact I think they tell you that in their instructions abot cutting the hingee shorthe for the end of the aierleons. thanks Bob

I have found if you drill the holes to hold the large inner nyrod and screw into them they will hold and not come loose. Just drill the ca the inner rod into the hole and your done. thanks Bob

RE: which corsair??
As far as price goes you may pay more for the TOP-FLITE but I forgot to mention that they supply the cockpit kit the dummy engine and a well made spinner with the kit . they also supply the gear doors that actually have a scale appearence , but their tail wheel retract and doors are bad as far as scale goes. The flying surfaces are already hinged except the rudder , which saves a lot of pain in the neck work. thanls Bob

RE: which corsair??
I have built both and I would have to say as far as flying the TOP-FLITE wins , it comes in a couple of lbs. lighter then the ESM , They made some changes from the kit version, They added 3" in the lenght of the fuse. so even with the lighter engines of today you will not need as much led up front to balance . With a DA-50 you need approx 8 to twelve oz. You can always modify the color scheme without to much work. The down side is you will be usung your hot air gun to keep shrinking the covering. The ESM Corsair is more scale looking but heavier then the TOP-FLITE and you do not have to worry about wrinkies as much although their covering will wrinkle some and is harder to get them out. I found with the ESM kits I have built that their enginering leaves a lot to be desired compared to TOP-FLITE . The servo set uo for the TOP-FLITE is much better then the set up for the ESM. Also it is very easy to get parts for the TOP-FLITE but Troy Built is offering most parts for the ESM now. I think the ROBART RETRACTS are a step above the ESM retracts. I guess MY vote is for the TOP-FLITE. thanks Bob

The ones from yellow aircraft are for the late model P-40E or K model with the fish tail style . Final touch sells both the round style for the early P-40E and fish tail. Actually I think the round ones are for the P-40B/C but can be used on the E model. thanks Bob

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
If it is the arf version it should weigh appox. 20 to 22 lbs. unless you add a lot of extras. If it is from the Kit It could weigh up to 25 to 27 lbs. The Arc shoud be around 22 to 24 lbs. I have built them all and actually 3 or 4 of each over the past years. They all fly good but my arf I could almost walk it in with the flaps down and it won'i stall. I have been in modeling for approx 59 years and RC for approx. 44yrs and have flow just about every type of spor ship and war bird there is and the TOP-FLITE ARF's are probably the best. I have owned and flow their P-51 -P-40 - P-47 and I just finished their Corsar . I have not flown it yet but I would bet it is the same as the others. Don't be afraid of it just ask for help at your field until you get use to it. thanks Bob

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I just use full flaps almost all the time except when it is windy enough that you do not need them . You have enough to worry about when landing then have to worry about what switch and how much to use. Like I said I just drop them and I do not need to play with the elevator or anything else but the throttle and I will make a smooth 2 wheel landing without thinking about it. thanks Bob

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I have a couple of 9 C Futabs and I just use the slider switch on the lft side for the flaps , this way I can keep my finger on the elev. and airelon with my right hand and use my left to slide the switch to get what I want . I have not had any balloning problems with any of the TOP-FLITE P-51"s . and like the other fellow said I just fly it in for the landing when you start to trying to land a plane then you are in trouble just keep flying it right to the runway and you will make the smoothest landings , with the tail up and gradually let the tail settle down. Most guys I see that get into trouble try to slow up to much and 3 point the landing and that is when you get the balloning and bouncing . The P-51 almost lands itself . I fly with about 1/4 throttle on final and start comming back as I get near the runwat and leave the elevator alone and start using the throttle to control the desent. Just a very light touch of elevator just before the wheels touch to keep the nose straight and the tail up, once she is rolling cut the throttle and let the tail settle. thanks Bob

Probably the best pilot to use would be the BEST PILOT of Pappy Boyinton . It ia a full body pilot that would fit perfect for the Corsar . They are a little expensive but well worth it. $65. unpainted and I think $160. or $165. painted. thanks Bob

RE: us41 in byron p51
Depending on the weight of the P-51 means a big difference . If it was a 1 piece wing the byro drive with the Quadra 40 it flew it very realistic , mainly because the weight was held down to approx. 22 lbs. with the 2 piece wing and the weight went up so they went to the Quadra 42 and it helped a little then they tryed the Mustang 50. You need approx. 3000 to 3200 rpm to fly the plane safely and realisticaly with the quadra eng. . The US. eng. maybe a little different , but his was worked on by Bennett so I do not know if it has a little more power. Another trick was to add G-38 module to the Quadra and it was suppose to add another couple of 100 RPM's. The change was a drop in, I did it on my 1 piece wing P-51 with a Quadra 40 and it did make a little difference, plus the more you run the Quadra the better it will get. Don't give up the 4 blade, that is what sets the Byron Mustang apart from others. If you do not care then build a different kit and go to direct drive and a 2 blade prop for the best eficiency. thanks Bob

Like I said above a 24 volt strter with the belt drive or gear drive with 2 twelve volt batteries hooked together to get the 24 volts needed and someone to choke it and it will start very easy. I have built at least a dozen or so of the Byron P-51's over the years and this sytem works. Bob

I have had a number of these over the years, I always use a starter with 24 volts and someone with their finger in the carb to choke it. The ones you probably saw on you tube were changed to electronic ignition instead of magnito. You will be flipping by hand till your arm is sore and it probably will not start and run. bob

Can anyone tell me what RPM to expect from a new DLE-55 with a 22x10 master airscrew wood prop. I just mounted it in my TOP-FLITE P-40 and I tacked it at only 6000 rpm. I know it will go higher when it is broken in , but what should be the approx. rpm to expect. thanks Bob

RE: Top Flite Giant Corsair ARF Disappeared.
The problem is not with the servo extensions but where the servo connects into the receiver , that is where the tugging trying to connect the servo extensions wind up pulling the plug from the receiver and you will not be awhare of it. I use the plastic connectors on all my servo connections, but there are none for the connector to the receiver. You have to be very carefull not to pull to much when connecting the outer pannels. thanks bob

RE: Top Flite Giant Corsair ARF Disappeared.
I 'am also building one for a friend and I 'am making this a 1 piece wing. other then transportation which I have no problem with, I do not see any other advatage . The less pluging in and out and extra pluging of extension wires I always felt that there was a chance for a problem. i have had that happen to me twice before on a byron P*51 with the 2 piece wing , I was tugging at the extention on the wing panel to plug into the extension in the middle wing and sure enough just as I was about to land I lost airleon control and when I picked up the pieces I found the plug had come out of the receiver . I stayed in long enough to have a full flight but as soon as I droped the gear and made my turn douwnwind it failed. I also had another but that is also another story . bob

They are expecting the missing parts by Monday and then they will start shipping . Better check your bank accounts to see if the charged you twice. I received an e-mail from tower saying they were processing my order in the wharehouse for shipping and it would take 2 bussiness days to finish and they have taken the money from my account. ESM STUKA
I 'am thinking about picking one up next week, but I have been looking at video's of guys flying them , they seem to fly ok but I do not think I saw one good landing . I do not know wether it is the pilot's or the plane. Can anyone shed some light on the ESM STUKA. I cannot tell if they are coming in to slow and using to much elevator or is it something with the plane ? I would appreciate any info on this . RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
A lot of the guys flying at our field seem to have the same problem , they all come in to slow and try to flair to soon. These war birds are meant to land on their mains and roll out before the tail drops. Maybe you need more expo. in the elevator, like I said before stay off the elevator as much as possible and use the throttle to control youe desent . I fly off off a grass runway and maybe that helps some to slow the plane once she touches down, but when they come down on the mains they should stick and be very gentle with the elevator , only use enough to keep it on the mains then let the tail settle down and then use more elevator to keep it there. thanks bob

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
To tell the truth I think they all fly great , you cannot go wrong with any of them . The P-40 and P-47 are a little easier to put together only because all the flying surfaces are already hinged except the rudder. They all posess great slow flying characteristics and they all are very aerobactic for war birds. I have the GS Corsair on back order and that should be another great one . I would loke to see them come out with something a little different after the Corsair maybe a nice BF-109 G or a Hellcat I would really like to see a MACHI-202 or 205 but that is not going to happen. If you have a favorite out of the ones thay have now I would not hesitate to order one . With the flaps down and the landing gear down you can almost slow them down to a walk without them wanting to peel off. I fly the P-51 with an OS BGX 3500 and the P-47 and P-40 with the Big Tigre 4500 and they all realy pull them with a lot of authority . My buddy flys his P-47 with a DA -50 and we fly formation with them and I can stay right with him with my Tigre. I just got another P-40 and I will put a DLE-55 in it and compare the two. I like both glow and gas , I guess I still have a soft spot for the big glow engines. good luck with which ever you choose. thanks Bob

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
Actually I find using flaps really helps for smoother ladings it enables me to give a little more throttle and pull the plane in on it's mains and then just let her go till the tail drops and then apply a little up elevator to keep the tail down . This works with my P-51 and P-47 also . These Top-Flite war birds almost land themselves . Try to stay off the elevator and use the throttle more when coming in and do not try to flair to much or to soon. thanks Bob

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
I love my P-40 it fly's just like the P-51 and P-47 that I also have. I found with the P-40 you need to throttle up just before touching on the mains and maybe you need a little more expo on the elevators. If the elevators have to much throw or to sensitive you will ballon before touch down. Just my own obsevation with mine. Once the mains touch thet stick. thanks Bob
