Not much progress... my dog took up my weekend... tried something new though... ambroid. Ok, new to me.. there had been so many people recommending it for sheeting that i decided it was worth a try... and my LHS carries it.

RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
Don't misconstrue my questions for complaints on performance...this engine rocks so far and I'm extremely happy with my decision to try something new.... ( I've been an O.S. guy for years... this is my first chinese made engine. ) I liked the 10 enough that I preordered the 15GX when it was announced The only question I have remaining, and this is one that only time will tell ... is how the engines will run in a year, 5 years/10years... and will parts be available for the engine in 5-10 years.
ORIGINAL: Pete Bergstrom The performance of the stock carburetor is identical to Evgeny's when you allow the engine to break-in properly and you set the low speed needle properly. With any ABC engine there is a physical 'pinch' at the top of the stroke that adds drag to the system and causes a higher idle speed. During the break-in process the engine has to maintain enough kinetic energy to overcome this pinch which result in higher idle rpms. Also, as he noted the larger/heavier the prop the lower the idle will be because of the higher rotating mass and the kinetic energy that goes with that. Believe me, we went through three complete carb/needle valve redesigns and countless small modifications before we settled on our carb design and I think the result and success of the thousands of current users speaks for itself. RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
If you saw the length of my downline spin..... most glow engines would have quit after that as well... simple fuel starvation, not a fault of the engines but of my setup. I have a 6oz tank and the fact of the matter is with the small tank and gas tubing you don't get as much flexibility, so a vertical spin pulls the clunk out of the gas for an extended period of time. I wouldnt read into the inverted flight question too much.. like I said I'm still running the engine quite rich since its new and I haven't really messed with the needles yet. I' literally bolted on the engine, started it on the ground, ran a tank through it so I understood how it would fly and then put it into the air. I know I need to do some tuning here and was simply asking how to interpret the "burbling" inverted. I don't think that qualifies as an "issue" with the motor. Go buy it.... you'll be happy you did.
ORIGINAL: Rudeboy
ORIGINAL: Pete Bergstrom The difference in rich/lean between upright and inverted indicates a difference in tank height when compared to the centerline of the carburetor. Most likely your tank is located below the centerline when upright and conversely above when inverted which then richens out the mixture. As you further dial in the needles the severity of the mixture change becomes less. If you have a way to shim the tank up a little higher in the fuselage when it is upright I think you will find that will help as well. Pete
I'm curious as to how the attitude of the plane can change the mixture... Isn't the fuel pressure regulator in the carb supposed to make up for this? I thought that was the whole point of the regulator carb. I'm still looking into one of these engines...but not if simply flying inverted is enough to upset the mixture. Let alone flying a series of violent high G snaprolls and stuff like that.
RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
12x6 at 14500 rpms is approaching .60 sized glow territory... stock setup?
ORIGINAL: FlatSpin
ORIGINAL: josephcraig fuel pressure changing i think..little gasoline engines are more touchy to it..you might try running a higher idle on the flips, thats what i do,cause it can upset it more with low idle..i had my first spark plug die on me this weekend..it would run but couldn't tune it..ive had 4 gallons through it,all the rich running from break in..
Interesting... I also had to change out the spark plug this weekend. My only complaint is the $13 price tag for a new plug! The engine was bullet proof till the last two weekends then it just wouldn't run right for anything. After trying about everything I could think of to get it to run right, including a new fuel tank and all new lines, the last thing to try was the plug. Bingo! Back to rock solid in 5 minutes. BTW, I have about 2 ½ gallons thru it and it turns a 12x6 APC at ~14500 RPMs. Dave
RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
Its your Bison Pitts muffler... so down low when upright, and up high when inverted. It could be fuel tank location... I think my fuel tank due to the planes design is about 1/4" lower than the carb. Not a whole lot I can do there. My other thought is it could be b/c I'm using a 6oz tank and therefor short tubing...... I may be pulling the clunk out of the gas and getting some air bubbles in the line b/c of it.
ORIGINAL: flyinwalenda My guess would be : where is the muffler pressure nipple positioned when the plane is upright versus inverted ?
RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
Just had another good weekend with the 10GX. I have about a half gallon through the engine now and started leaning out the low speed needle valve a bit. Transitions aren't perfect, but I've been very cautious on leaning out the engine too much and admittedly always run my engines err'ing on the rich side. Will continue to lean it out as I go further... I'm currently only a screwdrivers blade width leaner than stock and the response is instantaneous enough that I'm pretty happy with the results. Had my first deadstick... flew the plane up to around ~450-500 feet and cut the engine and put it into a spin... engine died when we were down around 75 feet off the ground ( doesn't surprise me.. that was a pretty long spin... )... landed, went out to the runway .. fired the engine up with a couple flips and went right back up... Good stuff, I'm having a great time with the engine. Another flyer here has a 55AX on a similar plane and I'm pretty sure that the 10GX is outpulling the 55AX I'm getting 10650 rpms on a master airscrew 12x6 fiberglass prop. The one thing I do notice is the engine seems to "burble" a bit more when the muffler side is "up". I have my engine side mounted with a pitts muffer.... inverted flight causes "burbles" however the engine hasn't quite becuase of this. Any thoughts on this?

Thats it... we are getting new wood and redoing the tail....
ORIGINAL: RCKen Sorry that it took me so long to get the numbers on the weight for my tail feathers. I built them straight off the plans. The only modifications I did was to install Robart Hinge Points for my hinges. The weight of the vertical stabilizer, rudder, horizontal stabilizer, elevators, and all the hinges was 9.125 oz. This weight is before I have sanded the surfaces. Hope this helps Ken
Looks like your right... if you were really worried about it you could add some bracing, however with the amount of time this kit has been out and I don't see many threads about the rudder breaking off in flight... I'd think that its probably ok built stock... just make sure you have a solid joint and clamp it while it dries... picture stolen from google... not mine

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
will do.... with the 4 stroke .91 we had to add tail weight to get the balance into the acceptable range.. so if you were to say "I think your plane was nose heavy" would have me responding... likely! It was a big engine in that long nose. It would snap roll with the engine torque.. wouldn't against the torque at all.. I liked the plane well enough but never truly fell in love with it... this is round 2 with a different motor ( 15GX evolution ) and we'll see how it goes. It sure was fast to land... I could come in hitting the start of the run way level flight at 2-3' off the ground and cut the engine and completely overshoot the other end... which was at least 600feet long 2 footbal fields ....plane held speed forever.... it was fun in its own way... My father was always in awe that I could land it at all at those speeds...

Apologies to the thread... and "rant off".... Evegny if you enjoy modifying engines... by all means go for it, and by all means enjoy what you do and share your results here. It would be even better if you would show us what you did so that others could enjoy these performance gains as well.... Just realize there is a difference between me "choosing not to" and "can't"... I have an almost 7lb plane with a 10GX in the nose with not quite but near unlimited vertical, a nice idle and decent transition between .... I don't see a reason to modify the engine.

How old is too old for servo horns?
Plastic gets old, it gets brittle with age. at what age should we be replacing servo horns and other plastic types of connections in our models? I have 1 setup that I fly thats 15 years old and I'm starting to wonder since the parts bin for that same model has some servo horns that snapped pretty easily when flexed... does anybody have an indication of what the expected life of these plastic parts should be?

RE: New Evolution 10cc gas engine
must be tough seeing the ground from up there... You had an engine that wasn't tuned properly. Multiple people tried to help you tune it.. you ignored them and talked down to them.. even though they had the EXACT same issue you had at the beginning... you damaged the needle valve by doing exactly what the instructions tell you not to do... and the instructions tell you that doing it will damage the needle valve.. .. complained some more.... then supposedly did a bunch of modifications that now have the engine running with some ridiculous numbers yet offer no real proof.. we ask for videos and you post an MDS engine idling with a tachometer on it.... If thats called being a modeller... by all means.. you go be a modeller and I'll be a user.... I'll also be the one flying my scratch built planes this weekend.
ORIGINAL: Evgeny-arm In the world there are two types of modelers - the users. These are the ones that use only all ready. And those who are constantly experimenting and doing something for yourself and are looking for something new. I am not a user - I modeller .... AA5BY.... +1 is all I'll say.. I'm confused by Evegny's posts... if you asked me to summarize I'd say he hates the engine b/c he modified the crap out of it and it turns 16k rpm on a 13x6... I'd be curious to see a poll of people that ACTUALLY own this engine and their satisfaction.....lots of opinions on here by people that won't even try it..

RE: New Evolution Engines!! 15GX, 20GX, 33GX
Yeah, My comment on "less compression" wasn't meant to be good or bad. I think my main thought was when I bought the 10gx i struggled to turn it over without a prop on it. The compression on the engine was very high. With the 15gx it turned over pretty easily. Again, I didn't mean it to sound as if it was a bad thing... Hoping to get htis engine mounted and running this weekend as well.
ORIGINAL: flyinwalenda ^^ Don't forget, the 15 is a ringed piston and the 10 is an abc so it will "feel" different. As the 15 breaks in the ring expands and contracts and it will "fit" into the liner. Then it will seal properly and you will notice a difference in the "feel" of compression.
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Here is my .60 sized ultrasport I mentioned earlier. It hasn't flown in ~10 years... I've got the radio back in it and am just waiting on delivery of a new motor and hope to be flying it again in a week or so. My memories of this plane were it took off fast... flew fast.. and landed fast. Never was able to slow it down, that was with a .91 FS in the front. I'm putting a .90 2 stroke in it this time... I imagine my results will be similar :-)

RE: DynaFlite Super Decathlon Kit Bash and Build
Its the glue! ok its not the glue... but using the wood glue definitely has slown me down and made me more patient. I noticed with CA I tended to get very slappity slappity with parts... make em fit close enough them dump some glue on, if it stuck it must be good enough. With the titebond doesn't matter how fast I slap things together I still have to wait 30 minutes for the glue to set so it has really helped me get things bumped up a notch in terms of quality. regardless of the eternal fight over which glue is better, I'm apparently a better builder with the wood glue than with the CA. I won't get rid of CA completely.... just not for the majority of the plane.
ORIGINAL: KitBuilder Very nice joints!
