RE: Can the Pitts Special 120 (60
ORIGINAL: opjose A single winged plane with a long snout ( but not a long engine mounting box ) is typically far easier to convert to electric. Usually you can use a coping saw to cut out the front and back area in front of the cowl, then use a hobby knife to get the sides. Your batteries end up where the fuel tank would go. You may have to add a bit of re-inforcement along the sides, but with the front ''top'' off, this is not difficult. Consider modify a single wing ARF instead.
Thanks Opjose, I truly appreciate the advice.

RE: Can the Pitts Special 120 (60
ORIGINAL: opjose Planes that are specifically made for EP use, are designed around that intent. As such they are easier to deal with when electrifying. The best of both worlds are planes that are designed around either system. That said, if you have experience modifying ARFs for electrification, you should not have a problem, however the work is totally up to you. The placement of the hatch is always the single biggest problem. Some people sidestep this by not providing an access hatch at all! ( go figure! ). I can't imagine flying once, then having the recharge the packs while they are mounted on the plane. Typically I bring out enough packs for at least a half dozen flights and start cycling the first ones after the first flight.
Totally agree on all points. I've never attempted an electric conversion so I think I'll pass on this one. Yeah, could not imagine just leaving the battery in the plane...makes no sense and is totally unsafe. I do the same...I always have at least 2 or 3 batteries per plane and recharge at the field as soon as I run a pack down. I guess I'll skip this plane...bummer....looks so nice and I love Pitts biplanes. Been eyeing up the Zero Gravity Pitts but its a tad pricey for a 42" plane....an I'm looking to go larger for my club field planes.

Can the Pitts Special 120 (60
I'm hoping a NP support person will respond. I've built numerous large electrics and was wondering if this kit could be converted to electric. It's hard to tell if there is room for a battery bay from the pictures. It appears that there could be if the servos were relocated rearward. Please let me know your thoughts.

RE: Can the Pitts Special 120 (60
ORIGINAL: opjose Almost any ARF ''CAN'' be converted to Electric. The question is if it is worth doing? The biggest problem you'll have is the battery access hatch. Since there is no provision for one, you'll have to figure out your own way of putting one in, WITHOUT weakening the existing structure. Biplane conversions are especially problematic because of the short snout on most planes.
Yep, its the hatch and the room for the battery that I'm worried about. I can't find an assembly manual for the plane anywhere which might help. It's just priced so well at around $200 which makes it tempting. For $100 more I can get a biplane that is specifically made for electric so maybe that's a better idea. [&o]

RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) *****
Too bad they trusted Art-Tech to provide the motor in addition to the airframe when they 1st launched the plane. I bet it will be a nice plane with the E-Flite motor. I like (and have) Art-Tech products and think they are pretty nice in terms of quality, but the motors can leave a little to be desired, so the "lack of power" issue is no surprise.

RE: battery C rating and esc how does it work???
Thanks D Dawg! Its so tru that its best to go with better electronics (including Radio ETC). I have the ESC from an EDF that decided to fly through a bunch of tree branches. Found a Spitfire for a great price and figured they be a great match!
ORIGINAL: DumbDawg Then ur style'n... :) I only buy esc's now with switching bec's and they tend to be higher quality to... I tend to go overkill on electronics and will cheap out everywhere else... Its because the electronics keep the heli happy so thats the way I roll... rr fly... :) happy fly'n
RE: battery C rating and esc how does it work???
Actually Dawg, its an Electrifly ESC so its a pretty good one. And the battery is an Impulse..no cheap electronics here.
ORIGINAL: DumbDawg Personally... I WILL NOT buy ESky esc's or other products because of the poor performances and a tendency to 'burn' up... As for the other cheap esc's you do get what you are paying for most times... Personaly when it comes to electronics which is the main components that keep your heli in the air then I go overkill in this area... I personally buy at a very min 30A esc from a more 'reputable' supplier... It pays to do some homework here... What I run in the K2's is a 35A hobbywing or EMax (same company branded diff) and the same brands in the EXI but in a 40 - 45A esc WITH a switching bec... Linear bec's produce a lot of heat... The reason I run higher rated electronics rather than just meeting requirements is because electronics don't like heat and spikes... And electronics like cool temps, and clean even current supplies... Everytime you plug in ur heli, if ur like me, you can hardly get a good even plug-in... zztt snap pop... You spike the esc several times and it will shorten the life of them... Higher ratings means they can handle these events much better and provide cleaner even supplies or current no matter what the motor draws... I also installed a switch between the battery and esc so I can hot up the system and be ready to go without actually putting power to the esc yet... when I'm ready to go I simply flip a switch... and zoom zoom zoom... Mav... you might want to ask that question n the plank section... about the spitfire... I'd say that you are border line on requirements tho... The C rating on the battery seems low.. a 20 or 30C rated battery would be better, IMO The esc, if ESky, is junk and you should replace it... Its still to lower regardless of what brand it is... again.. IMO... happy fly'n
