RE: awsome upgrade for any 400 size heli!!!!!!!
I've been using it on my T-Rex ever since breaking two of the darn little rod guides... I had some CF tube I had ordered from Central Hobbies left over from a previous project. Been using it almost since I built the heli and it works great - no flex in the system and positive control. Just my .02. J

RE: Futaba 6XAS and the Trex
I have this TX and use it to fly my T-Rex 450XL CDE. I have normal, Idle up and Throttle Hold all configured. It handles the heli great with no swash interaction that I can see. While it doesn't have a whole lot of bells and whistles for Heli's it's a good radio for me. Took a while to figure it out, but I tried it first on a Blade CP and it flies that bird perfectly as well. Since there are so many settings to configure to trim the heli right I put it in a spreadsheet so I could keep track of my config. I''ve copied in the configuration I have below. Just so you're aware, I'm using the GY401 AVCS gyro and an R146iP receiver with all Futaba S3110 servos. Flies great with this combo. I have it set so I get the full pitch range on my heli without binding, and it's also just set for my flying preferences. *Disclaimer* Don't forget - this is the setup that works for me. Just use it as a guideline. Just because it's working for me doesn't mean it's the perfect configuration. ;) After initial setup, test test test. As I'm sure you know - a big part of a good flying heli is the setup. I spent a good deal of time tweaking the heli as well. RE: Blade CP Sinks Abruptly
Also - have a look at the mechanics. I had this problem kick in on me and noticed that the retainer that holds the main shaft in place (right below the swashplate) had moved up my main shaft about 3mm. This allowed for more play in the head and thus the "dropping" in flight. Moving the collar back down to eliminate the up-down play in the shaft helped me out. Just my .02. J

RE: E-Flite 4 in 1s compatible with Futaba?
Yes. I use mine with a Futaba transmitter and a Futaba "short" crystal in the 4-in-1 to match the frequency of my transmitter.

RE: Eco 8 mod
Or, rather than having a separate battery (why add extra weight?) you could employ a UBEC. These are typically more powerful than the BEC on the ESC, plus you have options - with some of the more expensive ones providing 6 volts to the cyclic servos and 5v to the gyro/tail servo. Or, if you must have a separate battery, do what casitas14 states, or check your ESC manual, some provide configuration for turning the BEC on or off I believe. Just my .02. J

RE: Bdavison's E-flite Blade Assembly
That's why we have these forums mtracy. :D But your assumption is incorrect. In order to hover, your heli will need positive pitch as your blades won't develop enough lift with zero pitch. While in forward flight you will not need as much pitch as the blades act as an airfoil (wing). I believe a standard range of pitch for hovering is around 2.5 to 4.5 degrees. That is why most people here say they hover at around 5/8 to 3/4 stick. With zero pitch at center position you will have the added pitch at 5/8 to 3/4 stick creating enough lift to get you off the ground. Hope this makes sense. J

RE: what's the different between GY401 ang GY240?
From what I understand - the GY401 has a 240Hz servo update rate vs. the 70Hz update rate of the GY240. The GY401 can accept gain control from the transmitter. The GY401 has a digital vs analog mode so it's response rate can be set to work better with a digital servo. I don't own either one (I would like to in a while! :D) but I just went and found the specs somewhere. You can check futaba-rc.com for details as well. For a micro-heli (Hornet and the like) I'd probably go with the GY240, but for a T-Rex and up I would probably go with the GY401 as I can grow more with that one (into the nitro birds, etc). For an average of $20 difference in price and a very similar weight, the GY401 is a good deal. Can you tell I've been shopping these? ;) Just my .02. J

RE: blade cp will not hold a steady altitude
I was hovering around last night in my basement and found that I was having a problem with altitude as well. Not the rotor wash issue as I'm used to that when hovering inside. I took the thing back to the workbench and found that the shaft retainer collar had slid up the shaft about 1 or 2mm. I loosened it, slid it back down so I could see zero play and tightened it and viola - altitude glitches were gone. I've also noted on mine that there is some pitch coupling that can occur with elevator and roll movements. To test this, wiggle the right stick around all axes and look at the blade pitch. On mine with aluminum swash I am getting very minor pitch variances because of the interaction of the 3 servos. Not enough to bug me, but I can tell it's there. I would hope that when the BH kit comes out that will be minimized.

RE: Painting on Main body
Shorty, the Blade's canopy is opaque so you have to paint the outside unfortunately. I really like the lexan bodies you can get and paint the inside of - I think the finish looks amazing. So far my Fusion paint is holding up - I have quite a few flights on including that one sideways landing incident and it still looks good. I'm not holding my breath though - I'm sure another bad "landing" or two won't help... J

RE: Bdavison's E-flite Blade Assembly
Phenom, not to sound rude, but I think you may need to exercise a little more patience. One of the first things the manual recommends is to work out your control inputs, and then to tune the response of the heli by adjusting the trim pots on the 4-in-1. Mine was all over the place as well - however with "patience" and trial and error I have the thing locked in and I love to fly it. It took me all of 10 minutes to get mine dialed in the first time, and then with each upgrade of blades (I'm on Carbons now) I had to do more fine tuning. I had even more fine tuning to do when I went to my Futaba radio over the stock unit. Trimming and tweaking helicopters is part of the package. The surprising thing about these for their price is the fact that you get a helicopter that has had the CCPM mix already configured for you - you don't have to deal with that, only minor trimming. No offense, but if you think these are difficult to tune and trim I'd suggest staying away from the more complex birds. The only thing they have going for them - and this is AFTER you have gone through the pain of setting them up - is the heading hold gyro and potentially more stability as they are larger. I think if you take the time and exercise enough patience to get yours in trim you will really enjoy flying it. Just my .02. J

RE: Painting on Main body
I found a plastic specific paint from Krylon called "Fusion". Carefully masked the windshield portion and viola - I now have a red Blade. See the images here: [link=http://67.182.232.123:8080/RedBlade.jpg]Red Blade[/link] I managed to park it on its side the other day on top of my garage with very little scraping of the paint. Seems to hold up well, but as stated above, it won't stick like painting fiberglass or other better surfaces. This plastic specific stuff may hold to the canopy better, but I can't be sure. I just got bored of "old Yeller"... FYI - the red on the main blades is Monokote Trim... J

RE: E-FLIGHT BLADE CP
[quote]ORIGINAL: HyperHat Thank you for re-posting the bdavison note - I had not seen it. I was relieved to learn that if you have to think to fly you will be too late. recently I have noticed that I hover much better when I tell myself just before lift off - "You are a great heli pilot, you can do it" over and over and then I lift off with minimal concious thought and just get into a ZEN type state of mind and it all just works out... maybe 39 years from now I'll be really flying it... [/quote] Great notes. My wife once bought me a book on learning to fly better, etc etc. The best thing I got from that book was the phrase "The Merry Modeler's Mindset". Funny sounding phrase, but it makes sense: Before you go to fly, be in the right frame of mind. When I go to the field to try some hardcore 3D with my nitro planes I recite that in my head time and again. Same with my little Blade. Be one with your aircraft and you will fly it much better. I'm by no means an expert, but I sure think that little phrase helps me do better every time I fly. Good luck! J

RE: Show us your micros (pics, pics, pics!!!)
Here's my new Blade after a make-over. Got it Saturday, ran stock for a dozen or so flights then upgraded to the AEK, TP1320's and the aluminum swash. [link=http://67.182.232.123:8080/RedBlade.jpg]J's Blade Full[/link] [link=http://67.182.232.123:8080/RedBlade_CloseUp.jpg]J's Blade Closer[/link] Made the boom supports from some CF rod left over from my Shocky Yak kit. Made the tail fin from some of the depron foam in the shocky kit - helps in FF more than I thought it would. Still not sure if I want to put any decals on it... This is my very first RC heli, I now have more than 30 flights on it and I'm fortunately crash free so far. I did however spend a darn long time playing on the Sim (G3) before getting this. Cross your fingers that I don't go out and crash this thing tomorrow... Happy flying all. J

RE: Ok, First Step Done
Agreed with Otto - if you are using LiPo's right off the bat, as per the manual you will want to switch to the 9t pinion motor. If you are going to fly for a while with the stock Nimh battery, leave the stock motor on. For the first few flights I kept with the Nimh as I have a fast charger and wanted to get the feel of the heli before tossing the other items on. I did however take and put the heatsinks from the aerobatic kit on even before going to the different motor/pinion. Heat is one of the big killers of these little cheap motors from what I've read. I also left my aluminum swash off to start with. After probably a dozen or more flights I went completely over to the aerobatic kit, the aluminum swash, etc. If you're worried about crashing I'd say stick with the stock blades to start with as you'll have the symmetrical's from the AEK as a fall back. btw: took my training gear off yesterday! Had to readjust proportional mix as the heli is lighter now without it. Still no crashes. (crosses fingers) Good luck!

RE: Ok, First Step Done
Well here's my .02: I was bitten by the heli bug 2 years ago at my local flying field. Saw a little Shogun flying around. Thought about it for a while and took the same advice you did and picked up a sim (G3). Spent loads of hours on it to make sure a) I liked flying the helis, and b) I could actually get one off the ground without crashing. I'm to the point on the sim now where I can do all the nose-in, side-in, FF and FFF as well as inverted flight, loops, rolls and even an ugly tick tock. The reverse flight still kills me... ;) To try to make a long story short, I also went with the Blade. I now have more than 20 flights on this thing without incident. Now remember, I spent loads of hours on the sim - specifically playing with the smaller helis such as the "Watt Not" etc as well as a downloaded version of the T-Rex. I'm having a great time. I actually really like the Blade - seems stable enough to me, it is still a handful - although IMHO it is definitely not uncontrollable as others have stated. After reading loads of posts here and elsewhere I decided my shopping list would consist of the following: - Blade CP - Aerobatic Kit - Crash Kit - Aluminum Swash - 2 Extra 9 tooth pinion main motors - 4 extra 8 tooth pinion tail motors - Training gear! I picked up the extra motors as I was going to be running LiPo's (had 2 TP 1320's and 2 TP 900's for it already) and had heard that there is the potential for the motors to wear out more quickly when running the LiPo's. After the first few flights I went right to the aerobatic kit, and the aluminum swashplate, however I'm sure I'm not good enough yet to know the difference on the swash. I can say however that in my flying so far I much prefer the symmetrical blades that come with the aerobatic kit. Much less affected by ground effect, etc. and seemingly more stable. I'm currently practicing hovering it over a 4x6 rug and I can keep it there. There you go - that's my .02... ;) Good luck!

RE: Questioning T-Rex purchase?
Folks - be careful on your recommendations on expo. JR vs. Futaba radios are opposite with respect to that from my experience. For my Futaba radio I always use negative expo to soften up the feel - whereas with JR you use positive expo to soften the feel. Of course always read your radio's manual to make sure. Just my .02. RE: Futaba 6XAS okay to use for heli?
Agreed - and I'm in the same boat, contemplating getting a heli, but wondering if my 6XAS will be enough. Here are the points (from my manual and the online FAQ Futaba has on this radio at [link=http://httl://futaba-rc.com/faq/faq-6xsuper.htm]Futaba 6X Super FAQ[/link]): The radio supports 4 swashplate types including 120 degree CCPM Contrary to what aldomontoya says, it DOES have a dial for pitch (used for flap trim in ACRO mode) Only a basic 3 point throttle curve Very basic idle-up and throttle-hold functionality Be aware though, that only the 6XAS (read: SUPER) supports CCPM mixing - the older 6XA did not. As has been stated above, I believe that this radio will be enough to get me started with a heli, even simple enough aerobatics - ie: idle up and throttle hold - but anything much more advanced will require a better TX. Hey, the good news is that you can go ahead and get a GOOD receiver, servos, etc as the 6X will support PCM transmission - so why not at least start out with good stuff then when you get the better TX you won't be needing to replace the other items. Just my .02 J

RE: How many of you have lost an airplane, literally?
Here's a good one... Back when I was about 18 (now that's a little while back - 15 yrs...) I had a little PT 20 trainer that had been my first plane and only plane at the time. I loved it... And flew the snot out of it. Well, one day my little sister comes home from middle school and announces to me that for a type of "show and tell" she's talked her teacher into having me up there to fly for her class. They ok'd with the principal, etc. so we were all set. I get up to her school on a cool overcast day. At the time the school was surrounded on 3 sides by nothing but open fields. Slightly breezy, etc. Anyway, get all the kids lined up 20 feet behind me and take off. First flight was ok, but I had to cut it short due to the little OS 25FP acting up on me. Refueled, tuned the engine and took off again. This time, I hear the engine sputtering as I head downwind. Go to turn around and nothing.... I got to sit there in front of an entire middle school class watching my pride and joy just fly (sputtering engine and all) off toward the mountains... It just kept flying! Hopped in the car and went looking. Never found it. The middle school class took on the project of putting out wanted signs and etc., but the plane was never reported... I still catch a good teasing for that! [:D]

RE: Have YOU ever shot someone else down?
I'm in the lucky boat here as I've never shot anyone down, nor been shot down yet (except a darn radio failure!). But I have witnessed one particularly bad incident: Show up to fly relatively early one day. Mostly the old farts there as that's when they like to fly - before it gets too hot. One young guy shows up with a buddy and a .60 sized Extra. Goes to our frequency board and puts his marker on his channel. After the typical prep work/bs'ing he takes his bird up. Meanwhile another guy with his son take their smallish T6 (.25 sized I think) up for a flight. The following was mayhem: Both of them screaming I don't got it! and the like. The one guy's Extra ended up in the sticks way out there, the other guy's T6 pancaked hard on the runway. Both of them were steaming mad (of course). Come to find out, the guy with the little T6 had just put up a piece of paper on the pin for the same frequency as the guy with the Extra. Well, little problem, a slight wind gust had knocked it off and so the channel had appeared clear to Mr. Extra. The ugliest part to all of this is that the T6 guy was technically at fault and all of us thought so, but would not take the blame for it. So poor young Mr. Extra suffers a complete loss of a much more expensive plane and gets nothing. They proceed to have a yelling match but then both leave disgusted. 2 points to all this I guess: 1. Make darn sure your frequency is properly marked - if in doubt, ASK! 2. Take accountability for your actions! I know I check our board periodically to make sure there aren't any problems as we do it on the honor system. Sadly, from all of this, I don't see either guy at our field anymore....

RE: Those pattern guys
MHESTER hit the mark solid - I have yet to compete, but in my area there's a small contingent of dedicated IMAC guys. Just talking with them, spotting for them, etc is a blast. Granted, sitting in the pits watching them run their patterns isn't the most fun, other than watching to see if one guy nails the move he was having problems with or if he missed it again. They're encouraging as well - asking me if I'm going to be in the next contest, etc. Even though I don't have an IMAC plane, I can still compete in Basic. I've gone to a couple of the local events and it's great to see and talk to the pilots, cheer them on and etc; I know when I start competing they'll do the same for me. RC Flying is a community and competition helps people to feel a part of that IMHO. J

Sorry about you losing your plane rkramer. I know how it feels :(. But to good news: Finally got the first flights on my UCD46 #2 today. Only 3, but I figured I wouldn't push things, didn't have a ton of time. Flew great, of course no flutter with the CF rods, etc. Nice thing is, I was actually able to climb out of hovers! Now, if you've followed this thread, I only have an OS46FX in it. But I do spin a 12.25x3.75 prop, no baffle in the muffler, plus drilled it out a little on the exhaust end. Getting right about 12000 rpm with this combo. Now, I'm not saying I muscle out of hovers, but I feel great about doing that - especially since I'm at about 4500 feet! I may be biased, but I like its looks in the air much better than the razzle 3d and the diablotin at our field today. (Too bad I don't fly as well as those guys do ;) )

I may have a bead on an OS 70FSII. We'll see how it pans out... I've also not had too much issue with tank location yet. I do end up running the engine rich, but I'm ok with that as rich engines run cooler. Dylwad, I got some nice extensions from Central Hobbies. They were pricey, but for the 24" ones I don't mind. They're JR and I think 18 guage wire. Tested them with my meter at the connectors, very minimal voltage drop.

Dang Flow, nice looking covering job! I've been trying to think of how to cover mine. Glad to hear other people are also using the joined elevator halves. As soon as I saw the first posts about it being tail heavy I knew I'd want to do something there, especially with the smaller engine I'm running. A thought: Futaba just came out with that S3010. It's pretty much standard size, relatively quick on 6 volts, but throws 90oz of torque around. Plus, it's pretty light at 1.6oz. It's also dang cheap, I think Tower has them for $25 or so. It's not digital, but for this size plane, 90oz at that weight would be pretty good. Thoughts?

u can do 46 wing problem
Funny enough, for the few flights I made on the #1 UCD, the 46 seemed pretty good. Took off to vert in about 10 feet or so, but didn't really hammer it. Did some high altitude hovers and had no authority to pull out, but that was ok at the time. Even managed a decent (but slow) waterfall without having full 3d deflections. Things are a bit different now. I've drilled the muffler, pulled the baffle, as well, I've now got two Hitec 5475HB's on the back, elevators are coupled. To balance, I put my 6v 1200 nimh under the fuel tank, have just the 2 servos in back and managed a 5 1/2" balance..
