RE: VT 49 help
line up the mark on the thrust washer with the line on the top of the crankcase. In this position the rotary valve needs to be halfway open on both exhaust and intake. you should be able to see light looking through one or the other. Max

RE: MP Jet Classic 0.40 Diesel
If its too loose you can always sit it on an anvil and give it a whack with a hammer. This is what Eric Clutton suggests and I've done it myself. It is an inexpensive (free) and effective solution. [;)] Max

RE: Engine fun day!
My advice is to always have some superglue at the ready. I sliced my hand just the other day and didn't feel like waiting at the ER for stitches so I glued it together. Worked wonders! Then I look on the internet and found out that's what it was invented for in the first place. Tested extensively in 'Nam. Some folks are allergic though. Max

RE: Checking Ether content
Don't know how accurate it was. I just poured some fuel into a 10cc syringe with the needle part sealed off and let it sit for two days open at the top. The oil and kero did separate out nicely though. Max

RE: Checking Ether content
So I'm confused? If I take a sample of my fuel and put it into a graduated container and sit it out to evaporate for a day, the difference between the initial amount and the final amount is how much ether was in it in the first place? I did this and was left with separated oil and kero. If correct, I had only ten percent ether content. However, I ran my taplin twin and a zom.15 on this the other day and they ran fine. I was not able to get my Kometa .29 diesel running though. I'm guessing I can just throw some John Deere in and make it as good as new? If so I have an unopened can of davis fuel 20 years old that could possibly be of use. Max

RE: Where is a good place to break in an engine?
I just went to Home depot and bought the biggest lawn mower muffler I could find and connected it to the engines muffler with some tubing. I did have to make an adapter using an aluminum plate and tube. Ran it in the back yard. No louder than weedeater. Best idea is to take off a day of work so neighbors won't be home and if wife works, no one to bother you about the smell and oil on your clothes! Then you can run engines all day. I actually do this about twice a year. Now that I've gotten to know my neighbors and fixed their lawnmowers and weedeaters for them over the years, some actually come over and check it out when I'm running stuff! Max[:D]

RE: ROYAL ENGINE
The Royal was an O.S. clone and and the one with the raised lettering on the side was a terrific engine. You rarely find them new in box because people ran the heck out of these things. For a manual, look at the MECOA website for the MECOA .40 which is another O.S. clone and has interchangeable parts. Max

Hey AMB, Are you referring to the video or the engine pics? The pics are an Indian made engine. The video is an English one. Max

RE: Taplin Twin
I've got two of those Indian made Twins. One in bad shape, the other NIB. The really interesting thing is that the earlier one still says "made in England" on the mounting lugs even though it was made in India. They made exact copies. I see yours is an Indiengland one. Some would probably argue that India is part of the British empire, though.[8D] Max

RE: Russian Elfin 149 ABC Repro
If you need to hone the cylinder, its easily done with a tool that is used for honing the pistons on auto disc brake calipers. These can be purchased at Auto supply shops for a few buck and fit into a standard drill. I use it when building my own engines and it works quite well. Max

RE: Home Brew After-Run Oil
ATF and Marvel are both good. After run oil is nowhere near as critical for diesels as for glows, though. The alchohol and nitro attract water. Kerosene and castor are water repellant. I only use it for long term storage on a diesel. Max

RE: HP 21VT compression level ?
It actually won't damage the piston. It doesn't get near the piston. It will damage the Aspin valve which controls your intake and exhaust. Take the plug out and look at it. it will be very obvious if the valve is scratched. Also, the engine wouldn't be turning over if the plug was jammed against the valve. Max

RE: HP 21VT compression level ?
Was it drawing fuel with the carb covered? They should suck fuel right in. If not, you may need to clean the carb. try squirting some fuel in the plug hole and starting it. If it starts for a short time , its the carb. Max

RE: Rossi .40 and .45 Carburetor Settings Help
Yukon is on the money. Start with the main needle 4 or 5 turns out. Get it to at least run rich, then lean it out. Otherwise you could ruin the thing. Many times older engines need to run at a rich setting until the congealed crap in the carb gets cleaned out just by having fuel run through it. As a former motorcycle racer and tuner, I can tell you that these things are more finicky in the aspect that you may need to adjust before every flight. Motorcycles, on the other hand, once you get em right leave em alone as long as you don't move to a different elevation. Used to race motocross, CZ, Dalesman and Puch. Flat track Kawasaki Greenstreak 100. Shows my age! Max

It would appear now that the only reasonable explanation is weight saving, although the whole thing could become clogged up with baked on castor! Perhaps we'll never know the true explanation![8D]

I'm with Jim on this one. I think its to relieve pressure above the contra to atmospheric pressure so that when backed off the contra would come up. Really, how much cooling could a few tiny holes make? Max

RE: Need help identifying this engine
It is indeed a Skyward .40 made by Picco and distributed by Udisco in Canada. Although slightly detuned from the Picco .40 it is a great and powerful engine. I have one in a Tsunami .40 and it tears holes in the sky. Mine does not have the inflight adjustment but it looks as if you can remove it and screw the needle into the carb from the pictures. There is a picture on this link fourth one down [link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7951975/mpage_16/key_/tm.htm[/link] Max

RE: Fox .40 DDD
I guess I'm gonna have to break down and get a tach. I can always explain to the wife that its a tool to make sure the fan in the convection oven is operating at optimum speed. In reality, mine probably broke because they were in the bottom of the flight box and had fuel dripped on them and tools throw on top of them. This time I'll give it the care it deserves.[8D] Max

Running a master 11/6. Don't know the rpms as I have ended up throwing away about five of those digital tachs because they last about as long as a remote meat thermometer. Max

RE: Fox .40 DDD
Funny! I remember asking Bob Davis about a diesel head for the Fox .40 at an R/C show in Maryland years ago and he said the bottom end couldn't handle it. So I made my own. Runs great and is on a stick trainer for the nephew. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1696197/anchors_1696197/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#1696197 Max

RE: choices
Not a fan of the PAW engines (blasphemy on this site). Go for the MVVS. It is everything a nice little diesel should be. Easy to start. Certainly as powerful as the PAW .09 if not more so and throttles very well for a diesel. That being said, no one ever indicates whether they need a throttled diesel or not when they ask for info! This is crucial as some perfectly good non throttled diesels perform quite poorly when throttled. For example, The Engel Rebel .09 is a superb non throttled engine but is awful with a throttle. Same for the Cipolla .09. The MK .17 with an O.S. throtttle is amazing and the best of all in my experience. All depends on your application. Max[;)]
