RE: AMA"s MA again loses $$$
I think that members should be able to recieve he magazine electronically. This might bring down costs. It is not a good magazine which is why despite the AMA having excellent distribution the magazine loses money. It takes months after an event to get articles posted and with new magazines like flyrc it is clear that there is a quality difference. Why not get rid of the magazine, have a electronic newsletter and take a few pages of the commercial magazines for the other info to those without computer access?

RE: 50cc mounting
Maybe the problem is the prop you are using. These engines are pretty particular and the difference in prop is very obvious once you experience it. What prop are you using? Also how much fuel have you run through the engines? They do perform better after break in. You have two very good engines that are tough to beat in terms of performance so I would look at other potential issues. By the way how much does your plane weigh?

RE: DL-50 gas engine
I ordered my DL this evening for an Aero-Works Extra 260. I have a DA 50 and will be interested to see how they compare. I will post my experiences. Nex weekend after I get a few flights on it.

RE: Has anyone converted this Dave Patrick Edge 540T?
I have a DPM edge 540 with a DA 50. I think that 13 pounds would be impossible with this plane. It is an excellent plane but a little on the heavy side. My weight is about 16 pounds with fuel.

RE: What is JR thinking?
It's all about costs. Printing is expensive and a CD is just a few pennies so for JR its a bottomline issue. Personally I think they should make printed manuals availible to those who want them but I understand the cost of that proposition. Just go to Kinkos and ask them to make you a binded two-sided copy. It will save you time and frustration.

RE: To Spektrum or not to Spektrum
I have decided to upgrade my 9303 with the spektrum module simply because I don't trust some of the guys at my field to follow the rules. We have had several incidents that have cost several big dollar planes. My most expensive plane is a 50cc Aeroworks Extra 260 so it isn't tremendously expensive but I would hate to lose it, particuarly to someone elses mistake.

I placed my order today. I will be using it with my 9303 and Aeroworks 50cc Extra 260 with a DA 50. I am looking forward to not having to worry about someone turning on their transmitter on my frequency. I will be happy to share my experiences with the product once I have a chance to use it. Congrats to Jim and his staff for this huge milestone. Tom

RE: XtremeLinkâ„¢ - 2.4GHz for Futaba, JR, and Hitec radios
What does Bill Gates or WindowsXP have to do with Xtremelink and 2.4Ghz? I don't understand you guys. I think many of us are a bit frustrated that the product is not availible. I personally spoke with Jim in November and he is a good guy who simply wants to provide a great product. He has had some challanges but there is no reason the believe there is a conspiricy here. Perhaps we have a guy who came up with a great idea and announced that it would be availible in a couple of months but did not anticipate the various pitfalls that any new product would experience. Perhaps many of us love the idea and want the product so bad that we check the website daily to see if we can get one. Perhaps it is what it appears to be, demand has exceeded the ability to meet the demand. I have no doubt that this product will make it to market in quanities that meet our needs. We just need to take it easy and be patient. There is no consipiricy to deprive anyone of Xtremelink, it is simply a small company trying to cope with an amazing combination of a new product a tremendous demand. Perhaps we could talk about the actual product at some point? I understand that several folks have them in hand and have great things to say about it. Tom

RE: XtremeLinkâ„¢ - 2.4GHz for Futaba, JR, and Hitec radios
I think that Jim's core competency is innovation which he seems to do very well, He owns several patents and has been very successful. I don't think it would be an insult to say that manufactuering and distribution of the products he develops is not within his core competency. Manufactuering and distribution are specialties within themselves not just tasks that anyone can do just because they are smart and motivated. What we have seen from Jim's company is a great product that was invented an developed that has stumbled its way into the market due to lack of availibility. Jim had a great first mover advantage that is being lost due to an inablility to manufactuer and distribute. Since Jim's announcment in the winter of last year, Spectrum has announced their modules, JR 2.4 systems, and Futaba systems. The oppourtunuty is not lost but if I were Jim I would bring in a couple of manufactuering and distribution guys and get the to work asap. If they can deliver these products in amounts to meet current demand they can own the conversion market. I beleive this product is superior to Spectrum's and is much more attractive that switching tranmitters due to high cost to replace equipment that is perfectfuly functional. I would encourage Jim to hire a couple of experts in manafactuering and distribution and sit back and watch this product take off. If he does this Xtremelink will be the industry standard. Sorry for the rant, I guess you can tell i am in a MBA program. Tom

RE: XtremeLinkâ„¢ - 2.4GHz for Futaba, JR, and Hitec radios
Hellcat Ace: If it were not for those of us who are willing to try new products when they first come out then they would not be availible to everyone later on. I don't think that the BMW guy's williness to try the product and pay for it makes him pompus. If it does than I guess I am in the same boat as he is. Beyond that don't hold your breath waiting for the price of this technology to drop in price because it won't for many years. Basic economic principles dictate that. BTW, it is not nice to call someone dumb. I do however like your taste in planes.

RE: XtremeLinkâ„¢ - 2.4GHz for Futaba, JR, and Hitec radios
I can't wait for these guys to get this product released. I am not sure why there has been such a huge delay. I was told back in Oct that it would be released by Christmas. I assume they simply underestimated the complexity of manufacturing processes rather than haviing a technical problem but the true test of this product will be when there are thousands of them out there in many different types of applications. Having said that, I have spoken with Jim Drew and I am convinced that this is sound technology and I will buy one as soon as it is availible.

RE: Customer service- good or bad?
Strulag, I would suggest you go to the UPS site, enter the dimensions and weight and see what the price is. BTW a company only makes profits when they have sales so yes some companies will infact cut their margins in order to make the sale. The margin for Horizon on a 33% plane is probably 500% so there is some room there. Also comparing the volume of shipping of Horizon with Aeroworks is crazy. Clearly Horizon has much more leverage to negotiate a good rate than Aeroworks does. Overall, I think it is very unfair to come on a site and claim a company is ripping you off because their shipping rates are different than a much bigger company on a particular product at a particular time. Before you make such accusations you should really do the homework needed. Food for thought perhaps??

RE: Customer service- good or bad?
I know for a fact that Aeroworks is not ripping anyone off with their shipping prices. Some companies offset the cost of shipping because of higher price margins that they enjoy or in an effort to move inventory. Horizon for an example offers cheap shipping on planes that don't move but charge full shipping prices for most other stuff. Companies like Chief provide free shipping on some items that have minimum price requirements as a means of offering a more competive deal. Simply comparing the shipping charges without examining the other factors will of course show substantial differences. UPS charges significant premiums for large packages due to the fact they take up alot of room. Just because I can get free shipping from one company on their product does not mean that UPS is not charging them full price to ship the item. Tom

RE: SD Model/TOC Extreme/TBM
I agree with Cliff600. If you are uncomfortable with the transition at SD then buy something else. I have concerns about availibility of parts but that could be said for any manufactuer as most don't keep alot of parts on hand.

RE: 50 or 100cc ?
I think this is more of a financial question then anything. In nearly all cases a 100cc bird will fly better than a 50cc. Any pilot with 14 years can fly either well. The costs involved are significantly different. For about 2k you can have a top of the line 50cc plane. To go with a 100cc plane you are looking at more than double that. I have flown both and own a 50cc plane for two reasons. 1. I like to have several planes and the cost of a 50cc plane allows that. 2. Transport of a 50cc plane is much easier. Both are great just pick what fits for you

I spoke at length with Jim today at the Arizona Jet Rally. Speaking with him was well worth the trip out there. I can't wait to get my hands on this technology. It is fantastic and well developed. I plan on using my 9303 with his module and reciever on all of my planes and helicopter. This means I will have 7 PPM and PCM recievers for sale if anyone is interested:-)

I do not speak for the club and don't pretend too. I stated clearly that these are my opinions and did not state anyone was unwelcome. In hindsight I should have kept my thoughts to myself as it is clear that the comments were a distraction for some. I am a fan of jets and will attend the event as a spectator. I will share my concerns with the board and not make them a part of this post. I apologize for any negative impression that I may have left. BTW nobody asked me to apologize.

RE: Dave Patrick Edge & DA-50
I bought my Edge when it first came out in 2002/2003. It sat partially built as we moved and I changed jobs. Finally a few months ago I put it together with a DA 50 and I have been pretty impressed. In 2002/2003 it was the finest ARF on the market without a doubt. Today it still is great but a little short of the Aeroworks and Aviation models stuff in my view point. The plane flies great at 15 pounds 4 ounces and I am very happy with the setup. I originally planned a YS140DZ but i am glad to have gone gas.

RE: AZ Jet Rally
The fact is there are only 2 or 3 jet guys in our club and none of them are diehard jet guys. I think most of the club would prefer to not bother with the event but it is tradition so therefore it will take place even if only a couple of guys come out. Last year there was a fraction of the previous year. There are two other clubs in AZ that host events that have more suitable fields so I think we should throw our support behind them. As far as the interference the field really does not have a problem. There were incidents two years ago but after the first lockout everyone flew at their own risk in my opinion. No club can guarentee a interference free field and the club officers did the best they could. It is heart breaking whenever somone loses a plane but the events of two years ago were an anomoly otherwise nobody would fly out there. Superstition is a great field and the AZ Model Aviators is a fantastic club filled with the best folks you ever wanna know. Any comments to the contrary are unfortunate and inaccurate. Given that two years ago pilots continued to fly in the face of continual lock outs it is clear that there was no statement from a club offical to be made. We are all big boys here and participate at our own risk. If I fly at your field and have a lock out I am not going to go on RCU and accuse you of misrepresentation or negligance.
