Hey guys, There's an EDF Speed contest going on over at RCG, sounded too fun not to join, so I've started building this. Quite a bit of work left, lots of sanding and cutting and glueing and electronics, but I've got till December fortunately to finish it...hope thats enough time :D Wingspan is 17" AUW should be around 60 grams or so, the fan is a GWS EDF30 with a Team Losi 12mm 10250kv inrunner brushless motor putting out around 50g of thrust (more with the tail cone). ParkZone RX/servos, 2S 250mah pack, 6g 2-3S ESC, single aileron and V-tail with elevator. Some folks already have theirs up and flying and hitting near 80mph, so I'm quite sure I wont be in the lead, but it'll be a fun contest. Its ridiculous seeing such small planes go so fast, great for the thumb-eye coordination (or perfect lawn-dart executions!). Nick

RE: Ultra-Micro P-51 BNF by ParkZone
Wheelnut, Yeah he's quite a builder, his P-51 is the very first of its kind that I've ever seen, the RX alone is an amazing peice of equipment. I think all but two of the props on his planes are carbon fiber, the other two were plastic (U-80s I believe). I've seen foam props on duration FF planes though, they are quite light indeed. Nick
ORIGINAL: Wheelnut What you got cooken, nick?
I got a little inspired when I saw Pounces work here. Everyone and their mother seems to have a P-51, so I thought a set of retracts for the P-51 would be a good idea. The design is quite simple, getting the geometry all correct may be another matter. Could one of you P-51 owners take a measurement of the width of the fuselage for me? Right at the leading edge of the wing would be great, I'm trying to draw up some plans for simple functional landing gear...helps to know how wide things can be first. Thanks, Nick

Hey Wheelnut, a while ago Silverlit/X-Twins released a little 2 channel Sopwith Camel that might suit your needs. I believe its powered with the same guts as the UBI or SWP (throttle/rudder control). Not sure if they're in the states yet (probably not), but it may be something worth looking at. RE: Mini P-51D from Horizon/Parkzone
I bet it'll take less than 2 years, heck I'd even say this time next year we'll already have micro EDFs in our hands. Its already quite possible to build micro EDFs using brushed or brushless motors, running on the ParkZone RXs (and if AirHogs was able to do it, surely ParkZone and others can too!). I like building my own, but I wouldnt mind if someone came out with an F-16 (hint

RE: New Blade Helicopter?
Although I'd like to pick up the P-51 (and probably will), the mSR is right there on the list as well. The mCX was a great little trainer, but boy it sure seemed slow once you got the hang of it. The mSR has a lot of the mCXs stability, but its several factors faster and more manuverable. I like fast and manuverable :D Plus it can be flown outdoors in some wind. I bet you could have some pretty crazy pylon racing with these little monsters! Nick

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
so far. But, I dont do the micro thing quite as much as I did and the last couple years have gravitated towards bigger planes. Micro planes still have a bit of a stigma attatched to them and dont always garner a lot of respect, so I'd be a bit hesitant to show up to a popular field with just a micro

RE: Sukhoi Su-26M BNF by ParkZone
Thanks for the link, Tim. I gotta say though, thats some bad law - no distinction for size? I can see the worry cities/insurance would have if people are flying a 10+ pound slimer in a local park, but sheesh! It all seems a bit over reaching and over reacting. Fortunately, foolish RC stunts have been pulled for ages and we're all still here flying, so I'm personally not to worried about any ramifications (however I live out in the country where I wouldnt have to worry about it in the first place - you're all more than welcome to come and fly out here with me if you lose your field!!). Wheelnut, you have a good point about the backyard flying - how could any organization possibly enforce not flying on your own property? Nick

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
tpes, I did indeed read your letter in the first post, and several pages after - quite a range of opinions on this matter. Does the AMA have some sort of subsection thats specifically for the smaller electrics? Surely they could if they dont, it would make sense that a plane that is less capable of causing damage would require less insurance, and make joining more attractive to those who do want to take the next step, but dont want to spend that extra 40 bucks to do it. Hoss, I dont know, I think a good number of todays PFers could very well become tomarrows AMA members, simply because its so very easy to get started in the hobby today with all the RTF electrics. Of course, theres no way of knowing which new PFer enjoys it enough to go to the next step and join a club. And granted, a good number of the younger generation thats flying today may not care enough to take it to that next level and may very well remain PFers and never join a club, and in that regard, the AMA would indeed be wasting their time. But, you just never know, I personally have been flying for about 5 years now, started off knowing absolutely knothing about RC planes, found the RC forums, and started building my own planes and havent looked back yet. But with that said, I've never joined a club or gotten a membership anywhere, in fact in the past 5 years, I've only flown with one other guy a few times, otherwise all solo flying - dont know if that counts as loyalty, but I do know I love the hobby (hard not to!). Where would you put the emphisis on gaining new membership? Nick

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
I may be misunderstanding, but are you saying if someone doesnt build their own stuff, and buys only RTFs/ARFs, they're not actually a hobbiest? Or that only scratch builds are considered "real" RC planes and anything but that is just a toy? I thought the purpose of RC planes was to fly, how you get in the air is purely personal taste, i.e. building or buying. Dont get me wrong, I love building, its actually better than the flying itself I think, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt call those who dont build a non-rc hobbiest. If I'm reading you correctly, I think its that kind of attitude that turns new people away from the hobby - someone new to the game comes with their new shiny RTF and they get told its just a toy, you didnt build it, its not "real" and get no respect. Kinda harsh, I mean, they're all the same thing, planes, how big, how they're made, and who they're made by SHOULD be completely irrelivent, its the flying that should matter, nothing else. No? Nick

RE: Sukhoi Su-26M BNF by ParkZone
I'm curious as to how the FAA or AMA intends on enforcing any of their rules upon us. I'm not usually one to break the rules, but if the rule is unjust, the I dont have a problem with breaking it (telling me I cant fly in my yard or a park because they think someone flying a plane during a game is dangerous, or something, seems slightly unjust). How could they possibly enforce any rules? Unless men in black coats come to my house directly, I'll be flying. I really dont think the AMA or FAA could kill this hobby, there is no real threat from RC planes, at least no more threat than any other "dangerous" things that we humans do. I'm truely surprised by peoples reactions to this. Nick

RE: My first plane design build
Hey Tim, is the weight due to the construction material? I know lots of folks make the SPAD planes, but that plastic stuff always seemed so heavy. However, the square shape gives you about as much wing area as possible, plus PBFs harrier quite well so they can slow down quite nicely. Good luck with the rest of the project! Nick edit: I was posting while you were posting [:)]

I thought it was pretty cool too (excluding the end!), but apparently a lot of people feel that stunts like this will somehow cause people to lose the ability to fly due to the AMA...or something...I dont really understand.
