RE: Carden 300EX 30% w/Precision Eagle 4.2
FlyerJoe - I recently picked up a Precision Eagle 4.2 - it's set up for nitro, but I want to convert it to gas. Can you tell me what kind of EI you're using, and where you put the Halls' sensor and what BTDC setting did you use? Also, do you have your Eagle mounted to that rubber disk \ outside bracket mounting system? I'm just wondering if I need to transfer that all to a new plane - seems like a lot of stuff and space. Thanks. Mike

RE: 70 cc 4.2 precision eagle stange shut off problem
Gentlemen - I've aquired a Precision Eagle 4.2 engine (from here on RC) - came inside a 102" Patty Wagstaff 260 (was built from a kit, the story goes). This engine is set up for Nitro - too small an engine, I'm pretty sure, and too expensive a fuel to fly this plane (the planes not only big but feels heavy - have not weighed it yet). I'm thinking of converting the Eagle to a gasser. (GP just came out with a 90" Revolver that I think this engine would be perfect for). I see that I can remove the spark plug \ glow plug adapter. But can anyone help me on the kind of EI to use, and the placement of the Hall Sensor? What degrees BTDC? Thanks. Other question - this engine comes with a complicated mounting setup - I've heard other's refer to it here on RCU - the engine is mounted to a rubber disk and the engine is suspended in a complicated bracket setup. I'm guessing the rubber is to absorb some of the engine vibration. Do I need to use this setup in my future plane? It takes up a bit of room. Thanks. Mike

RE: US/Quadra 35 with points?
Gord - that's good to know. If you don't mind I may have some other questions, when I get these parts and start working on this. Though I imagine the people at B&B can answer these questions, too.

rowdowg - great news, isn't it? We've been talking about this on the "Larger Revolver" thread, too. (though that thread is very slow to open - I think it's just TOO long at this point.

RE: US/Quadra 35 with points?
Thanks flypaper. I plan on buying a spinner from B&B Specialties and using my Megatron starter to spin it up. And I'm thinking of adding an ignition cut-off switch. I'll also ask B&B if there's a way I can cut the ignition remotely (I imagine there is). Looking to put this engine in my 96" Kangke Monocoupe, replacing the Zenoah G26. Am hoping the extra HP offsets the additional weight.

RE: US/Quadra 35 with points?
I just picked up one of these engines. Haven't tested it yet. How do you choke these gassers that have no choke butterfly?? And exactly how do you clean the "points"? Thanks.

RE: Larger Revolver
Sbach - I've owned a few Rev 70's with different engines and the DLE 20 seems to me the very best engine for it. And that's 2x the recommended cubic inch. As far as how much you should customize \ reinforce an ARF, I think that's up to the owner. If we all thought the same way this hobby would get kind of dull, don't you think? (Ever see airraptor's videos where he's got an OS 120 2s in a Rev 59 doing GOD knows how fast? Very cool, IMHO). And I'd be surprised to hear of crashes caused by simply overpowering - more likely the combination of overpowering, under-building, poor flying. At least TWO of which I try to avoid! As with some others here, I'd much rather have extra power than not. I also enjoy pushing some of my planes slightly past their designed intentions, but with care and some judicious reinforcement. For example, I've never seen anyone do aerobatics with their Super Stearman or Kanke Monocoupe like I do - but I like to fly that way. Not trying to be confrontational - just saying - to each his own!

RE: Larger Revolver
wjcalhoun - you're probably right, considering how Great Planes tends to under-spec their engine recommendations. Considering that most of use 1.5x to 2.0x the recommended cubic inches, we're looking at - low end - a 75cc gasser to live the Revolver life to which we've become accustomed. That's equivalent to running a 912s in a "61" Rev 70. And an OS 120 \ DLE 20 - would that be equivalent to a 100cc gasser?? Yikes. On the other hand, I see DLE 55's moving 87" 3D planes pretty nicely, so... I just hope SOMEBODY on this thread has the money to experiment!! Very fortunately, I just so happen to have a Precision Eagle 4.2 (70cc) that is currently set up for Nitro. But I can easily convert it back to gas. A bit heavy, perhaps, but it's free (ish).

RE: Larger Revolver
Luchnia - good point about gassers leaning on the torque side. But a significant part of that is propping, don't you think? I have a 73" Sukhoi \ DLE 30 with an APC 18x10, and that plane is pretty darn quick, and still excellent vertical. I'm not up to 3D yet, so doing sport flying with it. When I want to try 3D I'll change the prop to a 20x8 or 6, and I expect straight speeds to decrease . So I'm hoping that the DLE 55 (or equivalent) and the right prop will be able to provide good \ very good speed with the new Rev.

RE: Larger Revolver
WO! I just spoke with Tower Hobbies about the new G-Rev - and got some specs that "just came out in their new book". Wingspan - ... wait for it ... 90" !!!!! (holy...) Weight - 19.5-20.5 lbs Servos - High torque Engine - DLE 55 Expected date - Late Sept A 90" Revolver?? WOW!! Talk about turning heads at the field... At this price I might have to get one ASAP! (before GP realizes they can jack that price up...) The Rev90 is born! Mike

RE: Larger Revolver
Sbach - btw - even if you do get that engine running well, my feeling is that a 60 nitro engine is too small for the Rev 70 (despite the model specs). I'd recommend at least a 75, but better a 91 2s or 4s. I'm running an OS 120 4s, and the DLE 20 has even more power than that (the best engine for this plane, I think). From what I've seen the 60 is a good engine size for the Rev 59.

RE: Larger Revolver
Could also be a lack of back-pressure. Did you change out your hoses? Low and high-speed needles are set right? Fuel tank roughly on the same level as the carb? Did you try TH tech support? Tuning nitro's \ gas can be a pain sometimes, but once you get them dialed in they're usually pretty reliable. Still, some run better than others.

RE: Larger Revolver
Sbach342 - I'm amazed at the power and speed of electrics these days. From what I see they can easily outperform nitro's and gassers. I agree it's personal taste - I prefer a combustion engine in the front. But the electric 3D planes I saw today at the field were very impressive. On your Rev 70 - what Nitro engine are you having trouble with?

RE: Larger Revolver
afjetmech - Just noticed in Technotes that the chicken stick is to start GLOW engines. Aren't chicken sticks pretty much used for gassers?? Another strange item - packaging a transmitter and four 3004 servos. Those servos are good for small planes and trainers, but not even close this plane. Last - the "combo savings" in this package of $1,085 is .... wait for it ... $38.15. Ha. Not to knock it - I'm very happy this plane is finally here. Or will be soon.

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build
Have you guys thought of the DLE 35? 10% more horsepower, rear-pointed exhaust. Thin profile. From what I read on TH the rear-pointed exhaust might be specifically for tuned pipes, so maybe not for this plane. But might be worth speaking to TH about.

RE: Larger Revolver
HA! FINALLY!! LIKE the new paint-job, too. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to specs?? Since is IS a 50-55cc size (hint hint...) I"m going to guess 84". But, judging by other 50cc planes , could be bigger. This is COOL. Thank you for listening, Great Planes. Looks like they've improved the landing gear, too. Cant' wait to get a hold of one of these. Who's going to be first on this thread to own the Giant Revolver? (aka "G-Rev" for now??)

RE: Larger Revolver
I know what you're thinking: 'Did he take off six times or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a 70 inch Revolver, the sleekest sports plane in the Great Planes catalog, and would take your head clean off if you flew too low and too close, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

RE: Larger Revolver
Ahhhh - MUCH better!! Like the way it takes up the entire dining room table! (just like mine). One question - is that a REAL revolver handle sticking out underneath the RC Revolver's right wing??? Why not keep it going - where's your copy of the latest Velvet Revolver CD? (with Slash and Scott Weiland). And maybe a miniture revolving door?? ok, me, that's quite enough.

Same here - I hate to see the wreckage of a Revolver. Ouch. (though I DO see PLENTY of reusable parts there!) Ortho - You're cracking me up - you're going to try to sneak a 40% plane and a DA 170 past your Mrs?? Even if you DO - just how long will you be able to keep THAT a secret??? Looking forward to see how this story develops...

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
Did some nice flying this morning with my Rev 59 \ OS 91 4s. Beautiful day here in NY, 5-7mph wind, 50 def F - starting to get a little chilly. I love this plane - looks so pretty against the blue, crisp morning sky. Love the way it cuts through the air, does aerobatics, lands, etc. Am re-building my other Rev 59, with an OS 61 2s. I also have a Rev 70 \ OS 120 4s, but these are like two different planes. Love them both. Any good Rev 59 stories out there??

RE: Larger Revolver
Orthobird - I see the pics now. That seems like an unusual place for a linkage to fail. Was that 2-56 or 4-40 rod? Did the rod strip, or did the clevis expand, allowing the rod to slip through?

RE: Larger Revolver
Orthobird - 150mph?? That might be a new world record for the Rev 70. Would love to see that on video! Exactly where did your aileron linkage come undone? Are your hinges still intact? What kind of hinges are you using? Can you post a picture? Reading your post I thought you were going to say your aileron servo box came out (as it has done on mine and others'). Good thing to know - you can still fly the Rev 70 with one aileron!

RE: Larger Revolver
SBack342 - Did you get your Super Tiger from Tower Hobbies? Even if not you can call their Tech Support line for suggestions (just don't let them know you bought it elsewhere). btw - I've picked up quite a few used OS engines here on RCU - you can get a good deal if you look around. Most of them have been very good deals. markhamregular - I doubt you'd need to modify the firewall in the Rev 70 for the OS 95. But since they're both sold by Tower I'd ask them - they should be able to tell you (even though the 95 is somewhat about the recommended 75 2s).
