RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ahh yes: I had forgotten about Graupner. They are some hard-turning props compared to MA. At 10,000+ RPM in the air and the TurboHeader, it makes one attention-grabbing scream, let me tell ya.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I use one of the car jumper-booster batteries, because it has an air-compressor that I use for my retracts, it's 17.5 amp-hours. When I start my Saito 180 with it, the sullivan starter turns it faster than it idles and I never really know if it's running until I remove the starter. (It is always running). On a side note about my Saito 180, I am having trouble finding the right prop. 10% Wildcat Extra Premium. 700' elevation. MA 18x6 is not enough prop and it winds way too high in the air. The 18x8 is better but it is at only 7900 on the ground. The 16x8 3-blader is 9300 on the ground and while it doesn't unload as much as the MA 18x6 in the air, it still sounds too fast. I just ordered a 16x10 3-blader, but the pickings are getting slim. What do you boys use on your Saito 180?

That prop sounds good. I use a sullivan electric starter for my 180, no problems at all. I have a pretty big battery, though.

A good 2nd plane for you would be the Mini Pulse XT . It uses the same batteries you use in your T-28. It's a tail dragger, faster and will teach you balsa-repair....

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
my valve covers stick out of the bottom and have never touched the ground in 100 flights. it requires absolutely no elevator input to keep the tail firmly on the ground. All my other planes are Warbirds and they are starting to get jealous. I fly this one far more often. Plus, the Saito 72 sips the fuel and I get a lot more flights out of a gallon that I ever imagined.

RE: GP P-47 with Thunder Tiger .36 - Muahahahah!
i decided not to use the belly-pan foam. I have the retract servo sticking though the bottom of the wing and don't want to get any gunk on it, plus the wing bolts and the open aft end of the belly pan. I am using medium CA to hold the pan to the wing and it seems strong enough to take landings on grass..... The manual says 3.25" from the firewall to the prop washer. That was going to be tough with my Saito 40. But test fitting shows that 3.75" (or even 3.9") would be more appropriate. That is no problem at all for the saito. Did you boys try to cram the cowling far enough back over the fuselage to get the prop washer at 3.25"? I will stick with the tail skid. Since I have retracts, I might as well not have a tail wheel hanging around.... I imagine it'll still taxi on grass to some extent.... If not, not really an issue. I am sure that the rudder will hold it straight under full throttle blast-offs. I had the GP combat mustang and I was pleasantly surprised how much abuse it could take on a few ill-fated hand launches. Tough planes, these! Fast as all get-out with a Saito 40 and a 10x8 prop, let me tell you. Electric warbirds are just a shame. Never again for me....

RE: GP P-47 with Thunder Tiger .36 - Muahahahah!
I have this plane. I am impressed with the way the covering is already removed on the stab and rudder, ready for epoxy. The hinges are already installed, etc. Don't see that too often these days. The covering is wrinkled all to hell and back. I was not entirely successful in fixing this.... I have GP .10 retracts installed to help with taking off. I'll belly land it. I never heard of a 'launcher', what's that? I think I will try the expandable foam in the belly pan. I'll insert some tubes into the holes for the wing bolts to keep that area clear. I hope the stuff doesn't expand so much it blows the belly pan off the wing..... I was going to install a steerable tail wheel from my crashed PT-17, but was unable to find it and thought the skid would be OK under full throttle take-offs. Don't know if I can still install the wheel or not, since the rudder is glued to the fuselage now... I gutted the fuel tank area to get a 6oz tank installed for my Saito .40
ORIGINAL: mogge Hey all, Almost done with mine except for the engine install. I have a g20ei that I am using but even mounted to the box on the firewall, it is short by about an inch to clear the prop washer. How would you all recommend getting the clearance? I went out to B&B Specialties thinking they might have a radial engine mount that stands off the firewall but it appears they are flat. Would it be best to remove the stock box and build a bigger one? Are there standoffs available for something like this? Thanks for the help. I will post pictures soon. Mark
I usually cut a piece of wood to epoxy to the front of the box. What did you end up with?

RE: New Great Planes Revolver
ORIGINAL: Wing-Ding What an extensive collection of posts about this plane- a tremendous resource! I feel like I'm the last guy to build one of these. I put in a Saito .72 and mounted it inverted and used a Cline regulator so I didn't have to worry about flooding or hydro-locks (in the inverted configuration, the tank is much higher than the spray bar in the carb ). Maiden flight was today and flew her three times. I started out with the CG about 5mm aft of the recommended 4 5/16 (110mm)''. I rolled it inverted and it needed a ton of down stick to maintain level flight. So for the next flight I added about 1/3 ounce of weight on the tail. Was still nose heavy. In my opinion, the 420cc fuel tank is way too large and I believe adds a lot of weight forward of the CG. I think I'm going to install a smaller tank- maybe around 10 ounces (instead of the 14.2 ounce that comes stock) and also move it back to the wing tube. Landings were nerve racking. I had trouble with getting it to slow down and also had the ''bouncey-bounce'' landings. Think next time I'll try cutting throttle a lot sooner and use flaperons (or spoilerons). Oh yeah, the recommended low rates are not nearly enough. Went to high rates right away. I think I'm going to really like this plane after I get it ''dialed-in''.
The inverted .72 is how I fly mine, too. Same spinner even! I just cannot imagine any more engine on this plane. I fly with a 12x9 prop. The 13x8 was easier to slow down, but the speed on the 12x9 is insane. I have max throws on ailerons. The roll rate is damn near blinding. I cut throttle way out and glide it in holding some up elevator until the wheels touch. I then immediately let go of the elevator altogether. It sticks to the ground like glue. Granted, it want to roll a long way on it's mains but it slows a lot better rolling than it does gliding. I love this plane!

I think the length might need to be addressed. Maybe not. Ask around about the strut lengths. A little difference you can deal with. I cut a set of mine down. I also had to shorten the spring inside. But worst case is you can send them to CJ and they can alter them relatively inexpensively
