Avro Lancaster: How to size components without measurement
I found this to be helpful or at any rate reassuring. Estimating component dimensions from photos is not impossible; but it is difficult. So I tried this. Create a rectangular block scaled to an aircrew member of about six feet in height with the bulk of his flight clothing. Obtain the photo of an aircrew member from Internet and map onto the block as you see on the left. You can chop up the block to represent a seated pilot. With these, you can at least be sure that control wheels, seats, handles etc are not far out of the correct size. Best wishes Mike

Avro Lancaster: how to avoid double face problems
If a part is drawn as a double-faced polygon in Metasequoia, it will have the same texture both inside and out as it is very difficult and time-consuming to separate the two faces in order to apply different textures. My solution is to use multiple nested skins. These can be single or double faced and each skin can easily painted with a different texture. In fact, I prefer double faced polygons. I find that it makes debugging much easier. Here with this Lanc, there is a third level, the internal structure of the cockpit. I started drawing the instruments individually in the main panel; but it was a great deal of work which had to be repeated every time there was an adjustment. Luckily, I found a splendid photograph of the whole main instrument panel at http://www.SpitfireSpares.com. Graham very kindly gave me permission to use the photo. They have a wealth of spares and other material for many WWII British and American aircraft with tons of photos. To use an integrated photo was a wise decision even if I have lost to some extent a 3D feel. Anyway, here are some pics; first a square view of the panel. an oblique view of the internal structure, then the first nested skin and finally the whole covered by the final outer skin. I am drawing the pilot's seat at the moment. I try to understand and give some indication of the complexity with my drawing. At the moment I am trying to understand the seat raising mechanism and the hydraulic control valves and pipework for the flaps and undercarriage. It's not easy. The photographic coverage is not complete. I feel like Sherlock Holmes at times, deducing what must be there. Best wishes to all Mike

The Lancaster model is already flying with an initial TMD file. So it can certainly stand on its own two feet so to speak in AFPD. But it is not possible to see many details even with 3D sceneries. In AFPD all views of the model are radials to the centre point of the fuselage. This is a large model and if the view point is moved close enough to see detail the majority of the model is out of view. With Trolley I can easily move this centre viewpoint to another part of the aircraft and thus gain detail views of any part of the model with whatever line of sight I wish. Without Trolley, I would have to make significant changes to the TMD file. This way is much easier. I can, of course, obtain similar detail views within the 3D drawing program used to create the model, in this case Metasequoia. But AFPD and Meta use different implementations of the various drawing and rendering algorithms. As well, there are idiosyncrasies in AFPD's drawing and rendering code. Look at the interior of the front turret. There is an annoying shadow effect coming from the top hinge of the turret which does not appear in Meta. Similarly, my own drawing errors at times are much more evident within AFPD. And, of course, the colour tones are different between AFPD and Meta. I am using a very nice looking set of Russian two dimensional 3 view drawings as my basis. But I am finding that there are subtle errors in these drawings which change the whole character of the aircraft. I have had to struggle with the nose and front turret contours. The more time I spend looking at this area within AFPD as shown by the enclosed pic above, the better will be my model. I might even get the width of the turret framework correct! Well, Mike. Pushing AFPD to the limit
Fine detail in an AFPD model has a cost. The count of polygons (faces in Metasequoia) and vertices increases rapidly. If you want wheels that look round or curves that are not angular then you must pay this price. Every program has limits on computer memory and the number of components it can handle. So what are the limits in AFPD? Here is a test model, shown below, which allowed the number of polygons to be increased until the program, AFPD, broke. The model is based on a single component, one engine pod from an A10 model, also shown below. The model has 45 copies plus a fraction of this component. Each engine pod has 6406 vertices and 10149 polygons. The program, AFPD, has two parts as far as the user is concerned. The first part is where the model is loaded; you can see the revolving model. This also checks the graphics components of the model defined by the TMG file. If the model does not display correctly at this stage, there is an error in the TMG file. The second part is where the simulation occurs; where you fly your model in the selected scenery. If the model disintegrates or bounces like a ball at this stage, there is an error in the TMD file which sets all the physical parameters of the model. So where did AFPD break? The limit is in the first part, the loading of the model. The second stage, the simulation itself, is much more generous. The test model below has: Vertices 326317 Polygons (Faces) 495215 An increase of 4 polygons over this figure for a single model causes the first part of AFPD to crash. The first part of AFPD will accept twice this quantity of polygons using Aircraft I and Aircraft II. but a single model is limited to this count of polygons. The interesting thing is the ability of the second part of AFPD to simulate both Aircraft I and Aircraft II with this huge model. In the case of the computer being used, without any apparent reduction in performance or display frame rate. This computer has an Intel 2 Quad cpu with 3.25 Gb of RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX graphics card. To put all this in perspective, AFPD was intended for the training of RC pilots. A typical model for this purpose might be the HobbiStar60 model, a single engined high wing aircraft with a fixed tricycle undercarriage with a wingspan of 1.79m. This model has 47769 vertices and 57603 polygons. Roughly 10% of the limit. The conclusion must be that the limits of AFPD are very generous for its intended purpose. Of course, when I come along with my super-detailed life size models, things get a little different. I estimate that the model currently being built will require of the order of 400,000 polygons. So I should be alright, just. Please, IPACS, give me a little more. Give me up to 750,000 polygons. Then I shall be happy; at least for a time. All the best Mike

An illustration of technique
Recently I made a dummy model as a tool or trolley to carry components from another model under constuction and to show me details which might not be visible in the 3D drawing program I am using. Trolley will be available for anyone who wants it when the RC-Sim download site is back in operation. The enclosed picture is a full screen image of four copies of AFPD running simultaneously each showing the fuselage of the aircraft under construction rotated by a multiple of 60 degrees. Here I am checking the success or otherwise of changes to improve the curvature of the bottom line of the fuselage. The changes seem to be reasonable successful. Not the nose. I have not treated that yet. Trolley moves backwards and forwards, turns left and right under full user control. But it doesn't fly! Best wishes to all Mike

Mike, that's very good news. I'm hoping that there will be a strong customer base in the USA. That will make good software even better as it will inspire and motivate the developers. If I could have one wish: that there is a concentrated and collective push to make the TMD/TMG files transparent to users who wish to go that route. 27Mb model flies in AFPD
Hi all, Drawing my turret in, perhaps, excessive detail, I was scared stiff I would exceed AFPD program limits. So I stuck the turret on my A10 model which was pretty big to start with and to my surprise and delight, it flies in AFPD without, as yet, any problems. The critical file sizes are: A10_TL2.obj 26,273 KB A10_TL2.tgo 12,683 KB Seriously, what other simulator would allow this? Mike

A nice A10 TL2! But who is the original owner?.
Where did the basic model of this A10 come from? I need to ask the original owner's permission to publish the model. If I can't get permission, I'll have to delete it which would be a shame. Someone converted the original into an Easyfly model. I converted it into a half scale AFPD model. I estimate that 50% of the AFPD model is my own work. All my work is non-profit and any models I produce are published gratis. This model has working brakes, flaps and canopy. It would be pretty easy to implement dropping the bombs as well. Can anyone say who the original owner is? Best wishes Mike

Can a German speaker help me with some TMD words?
Can any German speaker help me, please? I'm working with a host of rc-sim.de forum posts relating to the TMD file, very kindly supplied by Andi Broenner. There are two words whose meaning I cannot decipher. 1. The German is: Hallo Hans, das [b]Eintauchen [/b] der einzelnen Bauteile kann man in der tmd für jedes einzelne Element einstellen, hierfür sind die letzten drei zeilen zuständig Kn = 1000 Dn = 20 Dv = 5 Kn ist quasi die Härte des bauteiles = strength? Dn scheint die Dämpfung zu sein, = damping? Dv ist für die Reibung zuständig. = friction? diese infos hab ich durch versuche ermittelt. joachim(skyflyer) The word that has me foxed is 'Eintauchen'. It is translated by my software as 'dipping' and that seems very strange 2. 'Räumliche Klebekraft' is translated as 'spatial adhesion'. The problem that 'spatial', 'Räumliche' , really doesn't mean anything at all that I can understand here. I've thought of 'surface' and 'normal' -(perpendicular to the tangent to a curve). Mike

Problem with cycling adverts
I can understand why you have the cycling adverts on the forum pages. But do you know that they are causing me great grief? I'm sure others who have slow Internet connections have the same problem. Basically, with my version of Internet Explorer 6.0.2900 running under XP Pro, the page is locked up with the automatic download of the adverts most of the time - say 80%. Worse, if I have two forum pages open and close one of them, Explorer freezes permanently and must be closed with the task manager. All this is turning the reading of forum pages into a pain in the neck. Can you make any suggestions? Mike

Thank you very much, Arthur I gave the two rpm values only as an example of the spread. The aircraft held level, the rpm values come up to yours. I think you are right; the problem is in the area of wingloading or at any rate coming up against the real aerodynamics embedded in AFPD. It seems that the propeller thrust drops off rapidly with any reduction of rpm. Mike

Two or three of points today, Arthur. I'm finding it difficult to hold altitude using the throttle. Very little movement in the transmitter stick or joystick slider changes a steep climb into a steep dive. For instance, at full throttle with 1919 rpm the variometer shows a climb of +7. A very small reduction in the transmitter stick gives 1535 rpm and a dive of -5. I thought of using EXPO; but I don't think that will work. Can you suggest anything to map a wider range of transmitter stick movement to rpm, say from 1500 rmp to full throttle? I don't understand what you mean when you say in your documentation "The engine has an electric starter and the engine exhaust gases are 'compacted'." Is this a reference to propeller pitch control? Reading your TMD file, I see that both the propeller and the engine components have a mechanical link to a servo: ServoPitch and ServoThrottle. cd Propeller/ ... PitchControl = ~Aircraft/ServoPitch/MechLink cd Engine/ ... ThrottleControl = ~Aircraft/ServoThrottle/MechLink Looking now at the two servos, I notice they have the same input signal, Out(0). cd ServoThrottle/ ... SignalIn = ~Aircraft/Receiver/Out(0) cd ServoPitch/ ... SignalIn = ~Aircraft/Receiver/Out(0) Does this mean that the pitch of the propeller is changed as the throttle control is moved? Mike

I have just downloaded your Tempête, Arthur. A very nice model. You have got the TMD data just right, I think. It flies very well. I like particularly the possibility of over-controlling and the ease of stalling the aircraft. These are things I want to learn in the simulator. I'm sure I'll have more comments when I have used it rather more. I think you are worried about the memory usage of the model and have restricted the resolution of the graphics elements for the major surfaces of the aircraft in favour of the very rich coverage of the detail cpmponents. Perhaps, for my taste, I would have preferred a richer and more detailed texture for those major surfaces. For me, the documentation of your controls and the data in the TMD file are a very real gift. I shall spend many hours studying them. I notice you have the very large numbers for your TMD parameters that correspond to the 1:1 scale and which I talk about in my post "TMD, the jewel in AFPD's crown?" A beautiful model which enriches substantially the possibilities and value of AFPD. Mike

TMD, the jewel in AFPD's crown?
Sadly, I don't have enough time to study other flight simulators. But I welcome comments from people who have had time to build models both in AFPD and, for instance, MS FS or RealFlight. I have build some aircraft models for AFPD using Metasequoia as a construction package. As, I'm sure, in common with most other people who have done the same, I find the difficult part to be the creation of the TMD file. This file contains an enormous number of parameters or values which set the physics of the model: how it flies, how it balances, what strengths the components have etc. I have groaned and complained often over the lack of documentation of the parameters and their effects; even getting really angry over the issue and making accusations of a lack of professional standards in the creation of AFPD. Now retired, I was a senior software engineer for a very well-known international company. But it is this that may be my downfall. Computer programs in themselves are not real; they are abstract creations of the mind. The programmer can pick and choose a partial reality where individual inputs from the user have clear and well-defined effects and so can be clearly documented. But good simulators and, particularly, AFPD are different. A change in one small part can bring a whole chain of unforeseen consequences throughout the model. This is the justification for saying that AFPD supports the physics of flight. And here is the difficulty with documentation. A good documentation of the TMD file might well be a three volume work of higher level mathematics which would need three years to study. I'd love to do that; but at my age I don't have the years to spare. Most people, when they create an AFPD model. use a copy of a TMD file from a similar aircraft model and make some small and very limited adjustments. That's fine if you stick to a limited range of aircraft models. But if you go outside the box: Oh, brother! Just recently I have been doing that: trying to create a model at a 1:1 scale with a wingspan of 17 metres. Yes, there are limitations in AFPD. It has to be usable. If the calculations and numbers could be sufficiently large to cope with wingspans from 17 metres down to 10 centimetres, the program would be too slow to use. This must be the case for any and all simulators, not just AFPD. So with this model, I went outside the box, using numbers in the TMD file which were very much larger than the normal. And here I found the problem that has lead to this post. Incredibly frustrated, I tried to strengthen just one wing joint and found that it affected the whole aircraft and the way it flew. How on earth can that be!!!! Then it struck me. You can't strengthen a wing joint in the abstract. To do so in the real means increasing the size of the joint using stronger and heavier materials. So, I believe, by strengthening the wing joint, I added weight to that point and changed the centre of gravity of the aircraft and, of course, the way it flew. Like a good programmer, I thought that changing a single Kf parameter thatin the TMD file which according to the sparse documentation available changes the tensile strength of a joint would do just that. Wrong, wrong! To obtain the desired effect, I had to change a whole host of other parameters. This indicates the problem the AFPD writers have with producing good documentation. It really isn't possible. So, I beg pardon for my previous irritation and anger. It also increases very greatly my respect for AFPD. AFPD really does support the physics of flight. I believe the TMD file is really a jewel beyond price. Mike

Arthur, you do produce beautiful aircraft. Thanks so much for the help you give to all of us so freely. I have been working on an A10 at a scale of 1:1 - which I believe is the point of True Scale. But I am find that it causes my standard AFPD to crash and lock up. It continues to produce spurious results even at a scale of 1:2 - an altitude of 11600 metres for example. So large models of between 8 to 16 metres appear to over-stress the standard AFPD. My question: do the True Scale modules provide additional runtime support for AFPD beyond the models themselves? Are any DLL's replaced or added? My very best wishes to you. Mike

RE: engine isolator?? for vibration
I seem to have had some success with the use of automobile engine gasket material - perhaps 10% - 15% reduction in vibration. In the photo the engine is connected to the carriage by two 3mm steel plates. I put small sheets of gasket material in between these. The material has a light green surface and shows white where it has been cut. Hope this helps. Mike

That image is being circulated all round here in Argentina. I've looked at David's (rainedave) prop data. With an APC 11x6 prop, he is getting: OS AX .46 RPM 12,864 Static thrust 6.35 lbs Super Tiger 45 ABC RPM 12,853 Static thrust 6.62 lbs With my OS .65LA,and the same prop, I am getting RPM 13,320 Static thrust 7.39 lbs With the engine leaned to the max, I get RPM 13550 What bad or good conclusions are possible? Tim, there are two ways if you are going to use AFPD. I know nothing of EasyFly. 1. You can set the SHINY parameter in the sub-segment of the TMG that corresponds to the component you wish to shine/flat. e.g. Append tmgeometricobject Leftwheel cd Leftwheel/ Geometry( "aircraft/HobbiStar60/HobbiStar60.obj", "Leftwheel" ) Shiny = 0.00 cd ../ But you will need to understand the structure of the TMG file. 2. The better way is to use the Material Property window of Metasequoia. This gives you much more control over the whole range of effects. See the enclosed image. But you will need to be fluent in the use of Metasequoia and have the ability to use the 'mqo_to_afp.exe' program to produce an AFPD data set. If you can wait a couple of days, I can send you an AFPD data set for your aircraft. Best wishes Mike

Dar, thank you for that. I bought the APC 11.5 x 6 without any thought of different designs within the APC range. The opposite of the perspective in the photo, the 11.5 is 1 mm wider than the 11 at the midpoint. The curvature of the 11.5 leading edge appears more pronounced. Using 1.5 as prop constant puts the 11.5 out of the chart but in the opposite direction. When will the fun ever stop!!!! Mike

Yes, Pe, the 11.5x6 value is a bummer. But remember I am a newbie. Even getting max rpm out of an engine is still very much hit and miss. The solution - more experience and runtime. The numbers will get better. I think I have grounds for optimism, that I have reached my initial objective. I can relate my noisy, smelly, smokey beast to the published abstract graphs in the magazines. I hope I can do better in the future and provide info of general interest. We have to see. All I can say is 'thank God' for this forum and the selfless help you have all provided. DarZeelon, I agree with you about MAN. I have a collection of MAN mags from 15 years ago. There does seem to have been a 'dumbing-down' of the contents between then and now. I almost cancelled my subscription, but have just renewed for one more year. I'm not really happy with the mag. Great stuff. Well done I have a large text file in German given me by Andy Broenner giving a wealth of detail and info on the TMD file values. I have translated part of it. But now I am heavily involved in the reality part of the reality/simulation equation. Specifically, deriving torque and horsepower curves from thrust and RPM data using my test rig and OS .65LA engine. So, unfortunately, work on AFPD modelling is on hold for the time being.
