RE: Can Keith Sparks spark the build comeback?
Sorry guys, I'm just at my limit and I did react to the one post by throwing up my hands. The funny thing about all of this is that in less than a decade MOST magazines will be consumed via tablet and not paper. The medium is just too powerful to ignore (remember when you saw funny guys talking into a wireless device called a cell phone?).

RE: Can Keith Sparks spark the build comeback?
ORIGINAL: Gray Beard I was just wondering what the video had to do with building. I saw a nice vacuum heater being used, I once had a nice small one for dental work. I noticed a radial engine being formed so it makes me ask, what is mr. Sparks making? Parts? If so how will that bring on a revival of kit building? I have been building planes sense 1956 when I was a kid. Washington State, it rained, kids did a lot of things indoors. We were outside when it wasn't raining though and planes and boats are only a couple of things we did. I just happen to still be building today and don't own an ARF or foam plane. OK, I did just get my first ARF this year, I forget I have it. The Aeroworks Extra 260 electric. I did a review on it and sent it to Mike to edit and format for me but he died two days later so I'm sure he never got it started? I do like the plane by the way but I wouldn't pay out $85.00 for one, it takes me three days to knock out a copy or repair job when mine gets hurt and cost me about $15.00 to make. Most people couldn't do that but any builder can. So, my question again, what is the guy in the video doing? How would it kick start kit building? Tower just raised the prices of there kits, a BIG bunch. There was a plans sale at MAN/air age for 1/2 off. It's on again and called the AMA sale now. Just stock up on plans and you won't need to buy a kit.
The video is an excerpt of a much longer video and story we ran in our May issue. OF COURSE I want you to look at the issue. We are doing something for the hobby that no magazine has ever done to date. We are writing about issues and people more than products in order to inspire current and future hobbyists. Keith has a series in our last two issues and it will span 6 - that teaches you how to fashion scale planes from solid foam. It's good stuff. I am trying to introduce that content to hobbyists who might care.

I like it whatever the reason! The art of building is fun and worthy of at least a try by new modelers.

RE: Hobby King turbine!
ORIGINAL: Seamus OLeprosy Now that  thread has calmed down a bit, I wonder if the real reason SOME jet guys are annoyed about cheaper turbines being available, is the fact that they will half the current resale value of their old engines. ''It's hard to sell a second hand OS for the price of a new ASP''
I doubt that's a real consideration. I have run JetCat, Jakadofsky, JetCentral and EvoJet turbines in my helicopters and jets. If I even sense that an engine will not perform, I will not risk my aircraft. At least for the near term until sufficient flight hours have been logged by a statistically significant number of pilots, HK will have to prove the airworthiness of its engines (just like every other manufacturer). Cheap parts don't hold up well under 600 degree Celsius heat. If the engines test out, I suspect people will begin using them, but not in huge numbers. I do also think that low price may attract less serious users. But even that is a stretch. The difference in price is only about $1,500 I suspect and if that amount is enough to bring a guy in who is otherwise unqualified, then the turbine waiver process will stop him at the door. If not, nothing would have stopped him. I believe every manufacturer should have his day in the market and let the market decide, provided the manufacturer is adhering to the same rules and regulations as the rest of the lot. MK

RE: Hobby Lobby's B-17 - Love it...
Hey Frank, I'd love to provide the review here for all but we have subscribers and paying customers who would be upset if we did! Also, understand that we spend a ton of money putting together professionally shot and edited video as well as stunning photos to create the review (and we pay writers who actually write for money). So the 3.99 we get for a single issue is pretty cheap to not only see the B-17, but to read our behind-the-scenes look at Hobby Lobby and all the other great stories in the issue. I'll tell you what; if you buy the issue and you are not satisfied with it, we'll credit you back. Michael

Turbine-powered, fire-breathing dragon!
I had the chance to visit Richard Hamel, the creator of "Mythical Beast" the first (and only) jet-powered, fire-breathing RC dragon in the world! This guy is nuts! He's super talented and will build anything that captures his mind. We will be publishing his first flight. This thing is mind-blowing.

Hobby Lobby's B-17 - Love it...
Hey Guys, we reviewed the Hobby Lobby B-17 (for RC Pilot Magazine) and I have to say that once you correct the elevator pushrod issue (which Hobby Lobby says they will correct in the next batch), the plane flies terrifically. It looks great in the air and is not difficult to land, provided you keep enough airspeed over the runway. It's got plenty of details and power (we flew it at 6,200 feet). The thumbnail is from the story in the July issue of the magazine.

I flew the Carbon-Z Scimitar and whoowee does it rip! It's a great trainer for landing a jet because it comes in like a delta with similar speed (especially with the heavier 4000 mAh battery). What Have You Been Missing?
If you have not read a full issue of RC Pilot, you have no idea what you've been missing. Our readers describe RC Pilot as the best RC magazine on the planet. The July issue has some great stories and kick-a$$ reviews; with no holds barred! Unlike Model Airplane News, which CLAIMS to have an interactive magazine, RC Pilot delivers 360-degree panoramas, inline video (even when you are not connected to the Internet), audio, tap-and-see diagrams and ads and much more. More to the point, our magazine is written and produced by professional writers, videographers and editors - not hobbyists who get free stuff in exchange for their stories (which all end up with the same conclusion, strangely). I created RC Pilot because I was sick of reading the same garbage month in and month out. Give it a try. You'll see exactly why I'm so excited about it. Please check out [link=http://www.rcpilot.com]www.rcpilot.com[/link] for WEB, iPad, Kindle and Android issues!

RE: We need RC Consumers website.
Really? I weighed in because the discussion was about whether or not to risk starting a business. Read the posts before mine. Granted, the guy may be a troll, but why would I use 2 identities to get a comment up when I pay for advertising on RCU and can post "promotional" posts within the rules. No conspiracy here to munch on... BTW...I'm happy to actually discuss the merits of the thread with you if you have a view. I feel very strongly about the poor quality of journalism in our hobby. The reviews done for RCU (back when Marc and I ran it) were still done by HOBBYISTS, who got FREE stuff there is an inherent bias in that type of reporting. If you want to chat about that, let's talk. But, trying to color me as a troll is just inaccurate.
