RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Stoat: Just absolutely amazing. By far the best weathering I have seen on this forum for sure. I'm still confused. Are you saying you layed fabric over the wings and airbrushed in edges to blend or you masked off panels on the wing as it came and airbrushed in the edges to look metal.? Did you scratch out all panel lines and rivets( maybe its white underneath) or paint them? I'm not familiar with this grime and dust or grime and rust paint. Is that the actual name of the paint and is it that close to plane color or is it because you diluted it so much? I gotta do this,( if I ever get my bay doors working properly as so I don't burn up servos) Thanks Marc

Kwik: Thanks for the detailed answer. Wow! I would have never guessed. Nudger I now see how its possible to go bigger. I was merely thinking within the confines of the bay area as it came in the kit. Some extensive modifications there for that 5 1/4" I like your idea of servo for each door half. I'm about at that point. Trying to get the doors to close with one servo on a crosslink design is driving me nuts. If not done right I burn up servos within minutes.! Marc

I would like to get an opinion on wheel size. Which do you guys think looks more scale... the 4" or 41/2" tire for the ESM 50cc corsair? And Captainron, I'd really like to know how you are gonna get a 5" wheel in that bay? Or were you joking? Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Captain Ron: Are you using 4 or 41/2" wheels? I got the large robart retracts and found them to fit very well with only some minor trimming of the gear bay compartment and I had to use plates to widen the mounting plate ( ESM opening is wider than robart foot.) I had to cut out some of the spare to allow for the shock absorber hinge bracket to fit. I can't imagine needing a longer strut than the one I have; I'm using a 41/2' wheel and it just barely fits inside bay. If most of you guys are using 4" wheels , I may switch. There is a nice set I saw that has the diamond tread, but I'd like to have a metal spoked wheel. Right now I have a metal wheel but it has 4 round holes in it. Not very scale Marc

I know we are in different parts of the world but I too had a stiff cross wind today( we have a hurricane in the neighborhood) I landed with half flaps and fair amount of throttle to keep her from crabbing and stalling on me. Got down fine with only a wheel bay door hinge coming loose. Fixed that , then was going back up but noticed my outboard flap's threaded brass screw pin ( which came in the kit to attach clevis to) I know , I should have never used that crap....just pulled out and left the outboard flap swinging. Tried epoxy but with that hollow flap, nothing to really bite into. So my day ended early. Now its back to reengineering. Thats all I've done on this plane it seems. Take care Marc

I looked at this engine and it sounds great. Has anybody ever converted one of these to gas. Just not sure I want to go back to the glow fuel mess. How is its reliability? I have a DA60 right now. You can beat it but I sure get chills when I hear that radial engine. Mine will always sound like a "model " plane. Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Stoat: Nice job. That plastic "construct" stuff is perfect isn't it. I don't know about you, but I had already put my cockpit in so I couldn't get access to the area of the fuse where I put the rear rail in . Didn't have much to glue to but the edges of the fuse. So now after a few flights the vibration has caused it to break loose. What did you use to stiffen the edges of the canopy? I bought this scale rubber windshield edge stripping that was perfect for the front canopy edge and the bottom and back edge of rear canopy. When I slide it forward the wind just blows over edge and rear canopy doesn't balloon, but vibration will open it if I don't use tape. I have to be able to open my canopy to start the plane because I disguised my choke lever as one of the levers coming out of instrument panel. It looks like you had two hole posts on each side of front canopy edge . Is this what the rear snaps into to align it? Happy flying Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Alfa: I have the robart 150 series and I must say I am very impressed with the machining and robustness. The open is a little wide but I made some plates to extend the width and it has worked just fine. If you are using 4" wheels, there is no problem fitting in bay. I used 41/2" and its very tight...less than a mm of clearance.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Captainron: Thanks. You know the more I've thought about it, the more I realize how lucky I was. If that wheel had of come off a few seconds earlier , the strut would have dug in the runway and caused a flip or spin out cartwheel, etc causing much more damage. If it had stayed on, but just barely, the wheel would probably not have fit in the wheel well, then not knowing the problem it could have come off the rest of the way on landing causing again much more damage over asphalt. So all in all, I'd have to call it a success. I agree...this group of corsair lovers is a great bunch of talented flyers and I have enjoyed keeping up with everyone during my build. I couldn't have done it without this forum. Take care and Happy Flying Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Stoat: Thanks for the kind words. Wow, I can't belive you had the same problem. My friend suggested almost the same thing ; after I landed( only he said drill all the way thru and use wire or an expansion sleeve) Either way, this will NOT happen again. Well I used flaps to slow her down and didn't quite get them up soon enough before she bellied so one of the flap control arm link posts snapped off. I'm afraid it will impossible to fix without cutting off hinges , drilling them out , etc. One landing gear door a littled buggered up...thats it! I was lucky I was flying where I was. Really nice field with lots of bailout room. Your cockpit is awesome. I like the padding around the dash. I may have to add that to mine. Make sure you really glue in those boxes and controls on the side panels( no paint under surface) The vibration was pretty brutal on mine and I have re- epoxied several. For an idea of how to do sliding cockpit, take a look at mine. Take care and happy flying! Marc I have a local hobby shop that has miniature plastic building supplies( like I- beams , square channel tubing, etc.) I used that to make my rails. Then I put screws with plastic tabs that could go in slides on the back side of canopy cover. I made them to swivel since the angle changes from closed to open( if you use the preformed indentation on fuse side behind cockpit...which I did.) Not sure how accurate it is, but it works and its fairly clean. The paint will eventually wear off from sliding but that makes it look more natural anyway. I'm sure yours will look amaziing whatever you do.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Well guys, after reading and watching all of your posts about how you love your corsair, I finally have something to show for my efforts. It has taken me a while to secure a decent video camera and someone who could half way operate the thing. That all came together today. I now join the ranks of those who have deconstructed and reconstructed the ESM Corsair, and have the video to prove it. You will notice that I start off the video with a landing( just to prove I have successfully done so( my videographer forgot to take the camera off standby for the takeoff off the first flight). So the rest of the video is of the second flight. I must say that I found the plane a true joy to fly but would have enjoyed it even more if I didn't have to think about how I was going to land my brand new corsair with one wheel!!! Here is the link to the 2nd flight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYLOV-sFgQ4&feature=em-share_video_user

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Very interesting fuel tank. I love mechanical things but I agree that you are probably setting yourself up for another failed component , however cool it may be. Would be curious to know how that tank operates to keep fuel feeding into the tube as it slides back on forth on the brass tubing.??? So the yellowish tygon tubing I currently have is too stiff? Can nitryle be used with gasoline? Not seen this. It is more flexible than tygon Thanks Marc

Thank you all and I didn't mean to stir up a physics hornets nest.LOL I agree that the fuel will most likely stay to theback of the tank. I guess I just need more faith in my gas engine and carb. I've just never tried to use my leaveblower while hanging upside down so I wasn't sure. This is my first gasser in a plane in case you couldn't tell. A quart!!! Really. Were you planning on leaving the country?LOL I have a 27oz tank. So I should be good for 8-10 min. huh? Thanks Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Thanks for the response. My only rational was that in a dive and low fuel the stiff tubing( not like silicone) on the main clunk obviously will not fall to the front of the tank and could I suck air in the line and kill the engine. I know , I never thought about this happening on my glow engines( and it never did) but the thought of dead stick landing a 27lb plane , scares the crap out of me! I believe and agree simpler is better. I too have a dot fill in between tank and carb. Marc

Thanks nudger. I still may put a small bracket to keep them from blowing open too far and actually going beyond the servo arm point of no return if you get my meaning....If too far the servo could actually try to make the door open further instead of close

Could you possibly give me some details on how you set up your main gear doors. I have mine on one servo each at the rear and they function but when they are open I'm afraid there is so much slop in them that after takeoff air currents may force them in a position that either wont let the wheel get by or will flip too far open and the servo wont close them. I'd appreciate any advise from anyone that has a near bullet proof system Thanks Marc

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Do yours buzz even when open or shut or do they make full travel and stop buzzing. Im using 3.4 @6V and I still get humm. Cant make it go away . If I adjust linkage so it goes away at closure, the hum is back at opening because now I either made it too short or too long,. I have an EPA programmer module and can get the buzz to go away sometimes but after each sequence , need to readjust endpoint with programmer. Thats no good and I'm afraid these mini servos seeing 6V dont take long with buzzing to get hot and melt the board inside. Been thru 3 since yesterday. Have two new ones today but am afraid to leave them buzzing for more than a few seconds. To be honest I about ready to toss the whole "sequenced servo gear door" idea.
