HPI Trophy Truggy Flux Axles... WTF?
A friend just starting out with RC picked up a HPI trophy truggy flux this past weekend. After running it for 10 minutes 2 of the wheels fell off and when I looked closer I noticed they have changed back to the little tiny rinky dinky 1/10th scale nuts for the wheels! On a 1/8th scale truck! WTF are these guys thinking? The big nuts are one of the best features of a 1/8th scale RC's that caused no issues whatsoever and they decide to change it. So I went on e-bay to order some new ones for him and I came across some of the "normal 1/8 style" axles. Can I use these parts on his trophy truggy flux? Will they fit? Heres a link on tower: Axles: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCJFZ&P=M Adapters: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCJJE&P=7 Stupid Axles that came with it: http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/53387/

Equalizing lead battery with Turnigy charger?
We have a small 24v lift truck at work and the battery needs to be equalized but I cant seem to find a charger that will do it. Anybody know anything about equalization of lead batteries? It seems like I need to charge at 2.65v/cell to do it. I was wondering if I could just set my turnigy 8150 to charge a 13cell to equalize my 12 cell battery? Would work out to almost 2.65v/cell. Im sure it would take a long time since I dont have much current capacity but would it work at all if we left it long enough?

RE: First flight of the year and tail way out of trim... ****?
Thanks Tinkman, I got it figured out. I've never really used anything but HH mode, but as soon as you mentioned both modes I decided to double check my transmitter and sure enough my last two flights were in rate mode. Obviously this was the difference I was seeing. My mistake. Must have hit the switch sometime over the winter when playing with my mcpx.

First flight of the year and tail way out of trim... wtf?
Took my HK 450 pro out last week and flew a couple battery packs and the tail trim was way out. Kept wanting to turn left. Using a HK-401 gyro. I managed to trim it out on the transmitter, but shouldnt the gyro have taken care of this? What could be wrong? I tried unplugged batt and started from scratch again, was slightly better but still turning.

Converting model schooner to RC?
A friend of mine was throwing out a couple of model schooners and I was thinking it would be cool to try and convert it to RC. Not interested in actually controlling sails by rc, just like to be able to drive it around slowly. I know a little about gas boats but nothing about slow speed scale stuff. What kind of power systems could I use for this? Does anybody make a pod style propulsion system for rc? that would make for a real easy conversion. Anybody do anything like this before or is it a waste of time.

Savage XS replacement motor? Need help...
A friend of mine recently bought a savage XS and he has the motor blown. It has no power, barely starts and runs hot. Tried plugging another motor into the ESC and it runs fine. Were looking for a decent cheap motor for a replacement. Anybody know of anything specific from hobby king that will fit? If not does anybody know the motor diameter, length and KV? The spacing for the mounting screws on these would be standardized right?

RE: MSR loss of power?
Thanks for the reply. Im leaning towards main motor now too. I have been able to fly it a little lately. Once you run it for a while and the motor warms up it will manage to maintain hover but just barely. Takes like 10 seconds to climb from floor to ceiling. I've also tried unplugging tail motor, even plugging battery direct into main motor without going through circuit board at all and no major change in headspeed. Not much else it can be. May pick one up tomorrow night, ill post results in case it might help someone else sometime.

mine is doing the exact same thing. check out my thread a few posts down. appearantly a short somewhere such as the in the tail motor could do it. i havent tested anything yet. My motor gets very hot too, i dont know if its just a bad motor?

RE: MSR loss of power?
Just saw this on another forum: "I have seen other helis (notably the mSR) in which the tail started to fail, and it would actually draw enough power that the main would be barely able to keep the heli airborne, and it would quickly go into lvc because of the heavy current draw" Could this be my problem or is it likely the main motor?

RE: Flipping MCPX tips?
I went ahead and tried it on 100%, and response was great flipped without loosing too much height but halfway between inverted and back to level again the tail blew out and every other attempt i tried the tail blew out before even getting it upside down. Been reading up on this and it seems like this is common on the MCPX. Lots of potential fixes available, which one should I go with? Some people are running extended booms, some are using the new mcpx2 tail rotor, some are even using a 120SR tail motor and rotor. Im guessing an extended 2mm solid carbon boom with a 120 SR motor would be the best possible setup right?

RE: MSR loss of power?
Sorry guys, I should have worded that different. Its been on the shelf for a while due to this problem, the problem was there prior to storage. Tried it again tonight with several different batteries, even a brand new battery from my mcpx (i know its bigger, I just let it dangle lol). But it didnt solve the problem. Power is comming and going. Occasionaly gets full power, at one point tonight i tried it, it would barely get off the ground then all of a sudden gained a bunch of headspeed and flew fine for 30 seconds and then kind of cut in and out of a lower headspeed a couple times and then eventually dropped back to lower speed again. Tried wiggling all wires and connections while under power with no sign of improvement. Motor is getting hot. Think the problem could be in the motor? Anybody ever have to replace one before? They just slide up out of the plastic frame right?

RE: Flipping MCPX tips?
Yeah using idle up and throttle and pitch curves look good. I just punched in the settings from the book last night without giving it much thought. I noticed the aleron and elevator dual rate is 70%, do they reccomend this as a starting point or is that the maximum for this heli without something binding? I guess id get it to flip much faster on 100%, can I change it?

MSR loss of power?
I have a blade msr BNF that has been on the shelf for a few months. it seems to have lost power. Sometimes cant even maintain hover. I have tried other batteries, and it does maintain a constant (although very low) amount of power throughout the charge so i really dont think its battery related. Anybody see anything like this before? Could it be the motor or the board or some mechanical thing?

Flipping MCPX tips?
I just bought a mcpx that im using with me DX7 (settings from manual). I cant seem to flip this thing without hitting the floor. Cyclic response seems fairly fast initialy but when you really crank it to flip upside down it seems slow. Anything I can do to speed it up? Any other reccomend DX7 settings? Maybe some basic pointers too? I have experiance with a t-rex 450 clone but havent attempted any stunts or anything upside down with it yet. I use clearview for a simulator and can flip/fly upside down fairly well with the T-rex. But even in the simulator I lose way more altitude with the mcpx. Anything I can do or is this just the way it is.

RE: Mini 8ight servo saver issue
Just a quick follow up. Took it apart again and had a quick look to see if I could improve something on the servo saver but didnt see much. I decided to give it a shot with a normal servo horn. The servo im using is only $5 anyway so its no big deal if i do damage it. Took it for another quick run and it seems great now. Since this buggy is so small there is a fair bit of flex in the steering system anyway. Im thinking the bellcrank and linkages will just flex before stripping a metal gear servo. Even with no servo saver i can take the left wheel and force it lock to lock without moving the servo. The right wheel is a little stiffer but I can still force it lock to lock without breaking anything. Im going to keep running it anyway. Ill post back here if I do strip the servo.

RE: Mini 8ight servo saver issue
Mine is really bad too. My mini will center fine from turning left and back to center but if i turn right and back to center its way off everytime. I took it apart tonight and put the servo in a vise with a pointer on it. I lined something up with the pointer and realized that the servo itself isnt center properly at all. If I go left and back to center its completely different then going right and back to center. Seems to be overshooting bad and generally all over the place. I had a spair Turnigy MG90 (http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=9392) servo here from my helis that looked to be the same size. Tried the same test in the vise and it centered perfect everytime. So I tried to install it but realized it was a little wider and didnt fit in the mount properly. I trimmed the inside of the mount and made it fit (had to trim it alot, and stretch the mount, probably not the best soloution). Reassembled and tested it in the garage and immediately saw a huge improvement. I could go left or right and center perfect everytime. However, the servo saver still seems to be an issue too. Ran it outside for a while and after hitting some bumps, jumps etc I noticed that center point did seem to move around a little bit occasionaly. No longer had the consistant turning left or right problem but still isnt perfect. To be honest the stock servo saver had a little slop in the spline on my metal gear replacement servo, I sandwiched a piece of plastic bag in between to tighten it up a little but again, probably not the best soloution. This could be part of my problem now. So bottom line dont rule out your servo either! In my case both are causing trouble. Servo was bad for sure. If anybody finds a good servo saver to use as a replacement please post a link.

RE: The mini everyone has always wanted, losi 1/14th 8ight
Mine isnt centering either. If I turn right and then go to center it will go straight, but if i turn left and go to center it will actually pull to the right bad. I havent had a chance to look at it at all as to what might be causing it, but theres a problem somewhere.

RE: new avalanche.
I just bought an Avalanche XTE and a friend bought a new monsoon XTE. The monsoon stripped the internal diff gears already and I fear that my avalanche is not too far behind. Are there any gears from some other brand that will fit? Or a whole diff assembly from another brand that can be dropped in maybe? If I lock the center and rear diff will it increase my turning radius much? I might look into machining some diff lockers. Something that you could just drop in instead of using the 6 gears and cross shafts and lock the diff. Would anybody be interested in something like that?

RE: Which truggy is best for me?
The RC8T has been holding up great. We just built a ramp and have been bashing it hard past couple weeks. Only think i've broke so far were steering links and I partly blame that on the offset wheels i was running. Just picked up a set of badland tires today along with a new body and new wing. heres a pic alongside my mini 8ight.

RE: Redcat electric monster trucks?
I finally got my Avalanche XTE. Its a nice truck to drive. Not overly impressed with the durability so far. Landed a 3 foot jump vertically and broke the rear hingepin holder and upper suspension arm. I made a replacment from aluminum and got it running again. On the second charge the Steering servo burned out. So i guess redcat doesnt have the servo problem sorted out. Hopefully there wont be too many other problems with it.

RE: Redcat electric monster trucks?
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner i really wish i had the cash to buy the avalanche XTE for myself. its clearly a more sturdy truck than the earthquake 8e. that trucks not bad, i liked mine. but it could stand to have stronger diff/stub axles/ect. the avalanche started out as a chassis meant to carry the weight, unlike the earthquake 8e which is kind a stretched 1/10 caldera chassis.
I had a chance to see a Monsoon XTE (truggy version of avalance chassis) running last week. Driver hit a wall at mid speed and broke a steering knuckle. LHS had a spair so we fixed it and ran it again for a while. Later broke the stub axle without any hard running. Not sure if it was related to the earlier crash. But its interesting you mention the earthquake having weak axles. Also by the end of the ngiht (only ran two packs) the rear diff had some major binding. Took that apart and found a couple minor chips in a couple gear teeth but nothing major. cleaned everything and refilled and they were nice and smooth for now at least. Not sure if this is a sign of bad diffs too. Lets hope not. If the avalance does have the crappy diffs/stub axles that you mention, are the alternatives? Are the diffs a direct copy of any other brand? Associated/kyosho/mugen/ofna/etc diffs drop right in by any chance?

RE: Which truggy is best for me?
Just an update from the guy who started this thread. I went with a RC8T after. Picked up a used Championship edition and converted it to electric with a 80a hobbywing ESC and one of those cheap pink hobbyking KD 3674 brushless motors on a 4s 5000mah pack. Very happy with it. Taken a fair beating so far with no broken parts. I would have liked the see the driveshafts a little beefier. Their noticably smaller then on my kyosho buggy. When it arrived used both fronts were bent and now i have a rear one bent too. I wasnt sure if i would like electric so i cheaped out for my first one, but performance is great. Only problem is keeping tires on it! Truggies are the coolest type of RC in my opinion. Their strong, handle great, jump great, and can still go almost anywhere.

RE: Advanced brushless motor info?
ORIGINAL: ThunderbirdJunkie GenerallyMost of the time, let's say a 1700kv Tekin T8 vs a 2650kv Tekin T8, the 2650 will draw more amps, but if both are geared for the same speed and both are on 4S, the 2650 will be faster and pull more amperage.
Yeah thats basically what i was wondering. So would doubling the KV on similar motors double current draw? Would there be twice as much torque at the wheels at start assuming both geared for same top speed? Just read up on the RX8, seems like quite the esc. So is this the only ESC that has a current limiter? This would help with traction and heat without messing up quick response in the air for leveling out right? Castle creations describe their punch control as a "throttle change limiter" which im guessing would reduce response in the air too right? Does anybody know which way the hobbywing limiters work?

Advanced brushless motor info?
Anybody know of any more advanced brushless motor articles online? All I can find is basic stuff. Im wondering for example how a 2000kv motor with a 20t pinion would compare to a 4000kv motor with a 10t pinion. Top speed should be the same but would there be any differences in torque or amperage at other speed ranges? Are there any ESC's that you can program the maximum amps delivered? Would be nice if you could to save on motor heating and limit torque to save tires a little.

Redcat electric monster trucks?
Im looking a buying a monster truck for my girlfriend. Im not all that up on monster trucks, i normally run buggies and truggies but shes set on a monster truck so looking for some advice. My LHS really pushes redcat. He reccomends I get the Caldera 10e. I cant seem to find much info on these online, any other forums with much info on it? An "official" thead somewhere maybe? Seems like the volcano is more popular, but he still recconmends the caldera. Should I look at the volcano too? How do you guys like the volcano and caldera? I just noticed they have an Avalance XTE. This thing thing is more expensive obviously but looks awesome. I like how the chassis is the same basic design as my buggies and truggies, really easy to work on. Is the Avalanche XTE the same chassis as the Monsoon XTE? I've seen the monsoon at my LHS and it looks to be built really good. Also looking at a used e-maxx although im not a really big fan of traxxas. Any advice on what i should buy?
