RE: New Pacific Aeromodel Clip Wing Monocoupe
Jimbo I'm not sure about the 4.5" wheels fitting. As you can see from the pic, I hve my wheelpants hogged out about as far as I can w/o changing the shape/lines and you can see how the 4" wheels fit. You'll have plenty of room front to rear, but side to side the 4.5 wheel has to be some wider, right? I dunno. Al

RE: New Pacific Aeromodel Clip Wing Monocoupe
Thanks, "Lots" The pawnee and the Clipped Wing 'Coupe aren't really comparable. The 'Coupe is much heavier, larger except for wingspan and faster. The H9 Pawnee, 80" wing, is about the best ARF I've ever assembled. The only mod I'd recommend would be to swap out the supplied tailwheel. It's very light and simple. Only "complication" it has is flaps. I have mine set up as 2-position. It flies just great, as it should because it's really just an upside-down Super Cub, though it handles MUCH better on the ground. Mine's powered w/ an EVO 52 and takes off at 1/2 throttle and just putts around nice and slow. About my favorite to fly. The Pacific Clipped Wing 'Coupe goes together about as good as one can. It's a real easy assembly and the flaperons are pretty easy to set up. The H9 Fokker DVII underneath the Pawnee on the wall rack also flies great w/ an EVO 61. It too went together very well. You're right about ground handling. Or lack of it. You can get around w/ lots of rudder and up elevator w/ strong blasts on the throttle, and scale (read "noseover!) landings aren't uncommon. The red and white taildragger hanging from the ceiling isn't a Cessna. It's the RC Guys Super Decathelon. Thanks for looking at the assortment. Here's the rest....
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot I came to the conclusion that the tails on these do not ride as high as a Waco tail. They ride on the high side of neutral, typically, much like the photo you were kind enough to show us, Tom. I was going to describe it as ''lower than the main wing, but not a lot lower''. Yours seems to be riding nicely. Some of the others I've been watching (and by the way, most of these I've looked carefully at have been in videos) are riding quite low in the tail. It's a testament to the excellent flight capabilities of this plane, but still it doesn't look quite right and I'm sure that although it might not be bad enough to make itself known, it has to cause some sort of drag and other related issues. With the frontal surfaces these Golden Agers present, it seems to me that streamlining anything you can would be important. Gives a whole new meaning to the words; ''Drag and Drop'' !!! I got a call from Pac Aero today, I found out the tires are 3-3/4 inches. I was going to get some 4.5-inch wheels for her but I guess I'm going to wait until I have the gear and the wheelpants in my hands first. That's a fairly big difference, although I think it may just work. Hopefully it should be here pretty soon. Jimbo
Jimbo Finally got in the shop today. You can get it off the Horizon website. What will pop up is a list of places that might have one. Then just start calling and you may well find one that way. That's what I did, on the advice of a Horizon Tech Rep, when they kept slippijng the delivery date for the backordered B25. It hsd been sold out of Horizon for three or four months and, as I said, they kept slipping the availability date for thre new ones. I found a B25 on my third call! Hey guys I've finished putting mine together. Went well w/ no major issues. Set up w/ OS120AX, OS metal engine mount, Truturn spinner, Jtech Pitts-style muffler and JR battery pack weighing 8.5 oz mounted to the firewall. Now. To balance the airplane at the 3 3/4" called for in the book, looks like it's gonna take 20oz of lead mounted on the firewall! That's a pound and a quarter; Holy Batplane, can this be right? The book says that 3 3/4" is supposed to be 1/4 the wing chord, but it doesn't look like it, so I'll measure it to find out. The book also says the CG can be set back as far as 4 1/8". Has anyone tried that? How's it fly? Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated. TIA Al

Nope. When the airplane's coming toward you, always the most difficult orientation-wise, to level the wings simply move the aileron stick towards the low wing. Saves having to try to figure things out and works whether the airplane's upright or inverted.

Thanks, Howard. Sounds like we do tje same sort of flying. I'm not a 3D type, and have no interest in hovering this thing over the middle of the field. Like to fly it more scale-like. I'll post a couple of pics of the install of the 120AX on here when (if) I EVER get the JTEC muffler my LHS ordered. Couldn't find a Brisson anywhere.... RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
Joe Sounds like Roy's came with a provision for joining the elevator halves (the "U bracket") and operating the elevator off a single servo/singlepushrod, whereas ours came with two pushrods, one for each elevator half, each operated by a separate servo. If that's not what it is then I'm at a complete loss too.... and I don't think reading the "manual" is going to help Roy a whole lot here! Hope all is well with you. Al (I won't even go into the fact that on mine the elevator pushrod tubes were misaligned in the vertical axis so that on the left side there wasn't enough room to install the control horn and have it operate w/o surgery! LOL)

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
ORIGINAL: RoysterDW Anyone have a good method or tip in installing the wing dowels to the wing and fuse? The manual is not very clear. Was thinking of making up a ply template and using that to match the holes up on the fuse.
Roy I agree w/ you on the manual; in fact it's not very clear on most things. (May have changed a bit as mine is the all-composite, bought in '07.) I studied the manual and tried to mark everything and concluded it was more than likely if I tried what the manual seemed to suggest I'd fk that up. So here's what I did. I bolted the wing to the fuse, taping down the front to get it correctly set in the wing saddle, and meaasued everything as carefully as I could to make sure it was correctly aligned side to side, tip to tail, etc and adjusted as necessary. My recollection is that it lined up pretty well so only minimal adjustment needed. Then I made sure I knew where the front of the wing was in relation to the front of the firewall and drilled from the front of the airplane through the firewall into the front of the wing. After that it was just a matter of getting the holes the right size to fit the dowels, put the dowls into the wing using 1 hour epoxy and remounted the wing, checking alignments again, bolted and taped it down, and went home for the evening. Worked out just great. (Make sure when you glue the dowels and remaount the wing you use Saran Wrap or something similar between the front of he wing and the rear of the firewall, unless of course you want a permanently-mounted wing! LOL) Good luck! Al

Yeah, well, I agree w/ that. But we'll see how much weight's really needed after I get everything in place. And for me the lack of hassle w/ the 2stroke glo just bolt it on, put a spinner on it anf go means something to me. That's reinforced, so far as I'm concerned, reading this thread and see guys standing on their heads trying to get the gas engines fitted and working...

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Well, finished up engine (OS120AX) installation today. Wound up w/ 1/4" ply spacer behind the OS metal mount. Throttle servo all hooked up, and battery (8.5 oz worth) mounted on the firewall. Waiting for the muffler; it's on backorder from JTec. Brisson makes one, but they're on backorder too. Installed the main gear, and I have to say that I think it's the easiest gear install I've ever done. Even the wheel pants were a piece of cake. It'll be the weekend before I can get back in the shop, but then I'll do the tailwheel, tail braces and the wing struts. Then all that's left'll be the muffler, receiver and setup. Still not sure whether I'll use 2.4/Spectrum, which is new tech for me, or the tried and true 72. THEN we'll see how it balances. I weighed the tail braces stuff and tailwheel today. Right at 3.5 oz. If we use the "4 to 1" formula, that means it'll take 14oz up front to balance that out. Be interesting to see how it all works out. Al

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Congrats of your successful flight! A slimer here also. I installed the engine and assorted stuff yesterday. OS 120AX plus OS metal mount, JTec Pitts Style muffler, 2lbs 6oz, JR Extra 2400mAh, 4.8 4 cell battery (mounted on firewall), 8.5oz, prop and spinner, 7oz. Total for all that is right at 3lb 6oz. I haven't yet weighed the stuff that goes back on the rear, the tail braces and tailwheel, but they feel pretty heavy. What's the rule of thumb, for every ounce you add on the back it takes 4oz up front to counter? We'll see how it balances when I get it all together. If I need weight I'll start by using a TruTurn spinner w/ adapter kit rather than the plastic spinner I used yesterday. That'll add a few ounces, then go from there. By the way, I wonder if anyone at Horizon w/ normal-sized hands ever tried to get those blind nuts for the engine mount on the rear of the firewall before they finalized the design and glued in the braces and the door>? [:@][:@][>:] LOL Before yesterday, I had never CA'd a blind nut to the tip of a finger to get it installed! Worked, though!

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Jeez. You guys are really overcomplicating this! LOL I'm not flaming or criticizing anybody, but I'm going w/ the OS 120AX, OS Metal Mount, ply spacer if necessary and Slimline Pitts-Style muffler. I anticapate that engine mounting'll take me, oh maybe 30 minutes, 'cause I don't think I'll be able to use the premarked mounting holes. If I want to go w/ a TruTurn spinner, I'll order one and I know it'll all fit as I've used this combo before on another airplane and everyhting matched up just fine. But I may just go w/ a white plastic spinner. Not sure yet but $10 or so for the plastic one sure beats the ~$60 TruTurn price w/ adapter kit and all. In any event, mount the engine, use the tank, tubes and stopper w/ the kit and take it to the field, fuel it, start it up, minimal adjustment to the needles and fly. It's just me, I guess, but I prefer the path of least resistance. Anyway, I'm just kidding about the "overcomplicating" part. Good luck to you all on your maidens. I'm about two weeks away.... Al

I sure agree. It's a great ARF so far as assembly and a wonderful airplane to fly. BUT if I can make a suggestion, throw away the kit-supplied tailwheel and mount a "scale-type" tailgear back there. If you do it while assembling it won't be much of a hassle, if any. If you use what's in the box you're gonna have to do it anyway and it's a PITA after you have it all put together. Youy'll love the airplane. Good luck Al
