RE: Grammar
ORIGINAL: badazzgti03 honestly? Who gives a crap! as long it's to the point and you can understand it.
This is a perfect example of the way a lot people are these days. They just go through life with a seemingly bad attitude, along with poor to non-existant language and grammar skills, most likely a result of the rapidly declining education system. It's the "ME" generation. Young people today are generally lazy, have no regard for rules and care little for anyone but themselves. You can see it in the way they dress and carry themselves, most want instant gratification and are not willing to take the time to do something correctly. To them, sloppy and slovenly is good enough. Obviously, a lot of parents and teachers don't care either. I could go on, but you can see the picture

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
A short while ago we were talking about the grease, or lack thereof, in the front engine case. I had added some engine oil and a small amount of STP to make it a little more "sticky". I pulled #4 intake lifter to fill and pulled #3 intake to determine the oil level, which is just below the centre of the crankshaft. This past weekend I flew the 400 and am now seeing an oily grease residue coming past the lifters, (a slight amount) so we are obviously getting some lube splashing or flung around inside the case. I had a small amount come out the breather hole on the pulse pump, and when I pulled the ignition sensor unit, there was a good coating of lube on the cams. I certainly feel better actually seeing some lubrication residue, rather than hoping that there was adequate lube from the grease. Thoughts???? Cheers, Dave.

Thank you, Detlef. It sounded like a simple idea[:o] It would be interesting to know how many 400's there are and if it would be worthwhile for the company, who manufactures the ignition, to include the 400. Mine is ser.# 154, purchased in Nov. 2010 Cheers, Dave.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
As this new ignition looks to be a "stand alone" unit, and assuming the hall/ignition sensors are all the same (physical) size?? ( I don't know this for sure), other than maybe the actual length of the plug wires, this should fit all the Mokis. I am, of course, making a broad assumption here. My 400 does suffer from the #3 drop out. Cheers, Dave.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Interesting devolpment on my 400 today. Just going over everything before the flying season gets into full swing. I pulled out my lifters and they have a very pronounced deep groove worn in the bottom of them where they ride on the cams. Obviously, they don't rotate like an automobile engine's lifters. To me this shows either a lack of lubrication or too soft a material. I do put a drop of oil on the lifter before each day's flying. Not sure how much, if any gets down between the lifter and the guide. I have 35 flights, about 5 gallons of fuel, on the engine. I have added a little bit of 20/50 engine oil to the gearcase to see if I can at least get a little lube on the base of the lifters. I drained out the little bit of gear oil I had put in after the warning of gear oil with EP additive being corrosive to brass bushings etc. Cheers, Dave. W/B #180

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Here you go......This is on a 400, I can't imagine the other mokis being different. #1...lifter #2...pin shows breather? or air intake for pulse piston? #3...ign. sensor #4...sensor removed, this is where I added oil. Cheers, Dave.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Scott, I followed mick15's suggestion. I pulled the hall sensor which allows access to the cams, push down #4 intake rocker and pull out the push rod (easy to do) pull out #4 intake lifter, it's just a short piece of rod, I added oil (80/90 gear oil),where the sensor mounts and it dribbles out of the lifter hole, didn't take much, maybe 2 teaspoonsful. This will put the oil level well below the crankshaft. You do not want to fill the housing full up with oil. Just like the manual trans in your car, the level is usuall just below 1/2 way. Now that I understand that the front nose housing is open to the cam housing, I wonder if I should be adding more oil. On my pulse pump housing there is a very small hole in the side....breather hole???? This is getting interesting. Looking forward to hearing from others who try this.[8D] I'll go and take some pictures of the lifter etc. Cheers, Dave.

RE: g-62 prop
Around these parts we use a Zinger 24x8 on a 1/3 pup with G 62. Plenty of power, most of the time only using part throttle. Zingers work fine, a pup is not a high performance aircraft...cheap too if you have a nose over and break it.[:o]

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Thanks Steve. My thought was to introduce some gear oil, perhaps to a level just below the crank shaft, much like the level of oil in an auto manual transmission. There would be at least some lube splashing around, not just sticking to the areas away from the gears. As long as the breather hole in the pump pulse housing is clear, there should be no, or very minimal, internal pressure buildup. As mentioned before by others, grease in a gearbox is not an effective way to lubricate. Cheers, Dave.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Is the front housing with the pulse pump sealed from the case with the cams inside? Just wondering if it would be beneficial to add some gear oil through the pump housing to lube the gears in the front case.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
I pulled off the hall sensor on my 400 and all the cams etc. looked to have some trace of lube on them. I did, however pull #4 intake lifter and added some 80/90 gear oil to the housing untill it dribbled out of the lifter guide. It didn't take much, but I figure it should help in the "splash" lubrication of the parts. As I rotated the crank, the cams were showing signs of "wet" lube. Can't hurt, right? Cheers, Dave.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
I have added baffles to my 400, but have not yet run it with them added. My concern is the potential for massive heat build up from the exhaust collector ring. I have moved the cowl on the Waco as far forward as I can to enlarge the air "out" area. Has anybody had any issues with this? Here is a carb "mod" that I use on all my Walbro carbs. I cut the head off a 6/32 socket head bolt, leaving about 3/16" stub of the shank. I file this "stub" to a "vee" shape and solder it to the head of the carb needles. Makes it a lot easier to make adjustments using long 6/32 ball driver. Makes carb adjusting with the engine running easy...using suitable plane restraints, of course.

RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
Mick15, you stated that you cannot think of a reason not to add oil to the front housing, but it is not a practise you would condone... Do you mean you would clean out all the grease first? I would think the the grease would liquify somewhat and would get slung around inside the housing. Grease is not the ideal lubricant for gearboxes....after a while there is no lubrication, it just sits on the sides and bottom of the case. I have a vested interest in preserving my 400, and using gear oil in the front housing sounds like a great idea, using #4 intake lifter as a level indicator. I am using an electric pump, so am not concerned with the pulse tube plugging up with grease. Has anyone else added oil to the gear case? Any issues? Cheers, Dave.
