RE: Introducing the FlowRam36cc Motor for Losi and Redcat
2 bolt or 4 bolt? why would you need to gear it down? i thought the idea of having a torque motor was so you could pull the taller gears and still maintain good speed at the top. i think maybe a better comparison/demonstration for all to see would be the losi with stock gears first with a 6k spring and then with an 8k... apples and apples if you will

RE: Gas vs Nitro thoughts & etc
time to chime[:D] first up hydrocarbons will be with us and the main source of energy for another 2, possibly 3, generations..there is still oodles of oil out there...remember most wells only yield 30% or so of their reserve...as technology advances more previously unreachable/unextractable oil will be recovered...remember 25yrs ago they were saying only 50 yrs left...now they reckon over 120yrs at current consumption rates of recoverable oil...it's when it becomes too unaffordable..that's when we'll be switching to alternatives...and at the mo hydrogen is not economical as it takes so much energy to split the H from O2...when they can do it economically then i agree that H will eventually be the planets energy source. so all that said i'd have to say that hpi aren't really thinking that gasoline is now on it's way out so will stop development on anything gas...gas engines will outlive everyone on this forum. so I'm still not sure this hpi project has been shelved, and also i don't think they are astute enough, judging by the release of the pathetic savage 5t nitro then flux garbage, to realize a flop when they have one[:)]. I'm all for the small gasser...i'm not sure why everyone seems to think it'll be gutless ...and simple inductive ignitions will handle 30k no problem. nitro gives 2.3 x more power than gas, pound for pound...rc's run only 30% max usually the rest is methanol and oil...methanol is 20% more powerful than gas so pound for pound you have about twice the btu energy than that of gas...now factor in the 8cc capacity...roughly twice that of most nitro engines and voila you have similar power output...in theory[;)] with extra cc comes torque so even though it may not rev to 35000 like a nitro it can be geared to give the same performance, however, seeing as our 23cc+ engines can turn 22k i don't think 30k from a smaller engine is unobtainable...i'm a believer in the concept mostly because it's already been done, but done properly with a separate cylinder and head[link]http://www.mecoa.com/compagnucci/index.htm[/link] HPI trying to converting an old nitro aero engine to gas may not be the best way to do it but hopefully we shall see soon. my 2 cents...soon i'll have no cents left ..lol

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..
the pipe still will not deliver the power of a tuned expansion chamber...it'll give performance similar to a can or x-can which is about 50% less than the engines full potential. here's a good explanation of how it works [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_chamber[/link] 99% of us here have run nitros in the past so know the difference in part beefiness between 1/8th and 5th..it's pretty substantial, so not being negative just informing you, from our experience with such things, that the drivetrain will be an issue if you expect to bash it like you would a true 1/5 rig. I have seen one of these up close (my buddy has one sit on his shelf, where it's been since he converted it) and had a good inspection...if you're going to just pootle around it'll be fine, give it the beans though and you may have some issues.

RE: GST 7.7 Gasser finnished..
ORIGINAL: hooleydog Na I think the gearbox will holed up as the gears are all metal inside , as for the pipe strangling the motor, I don't think so, cos the duratrax firehammer has only a small box muffler, and most other gasser MT have the same as standered, and team4 monster really do their homework (are real experts at converting the trucks), and they have done it with the savage too. Just ask for a price list.. http://team4monsters.freehosting.net/
the stock cans are restrictive...throw on a proper tuned pipe and you'll see what savcom was on about...the power you get from a tuned pipe is night and day difference compared to a can, however that said i don't think the drivetrain would like the extra ooomph a pipe will give you..even though the gears may all be steel they are tiny compared to 5th scale stuff, as are the diffs...I'm with savcom on this one, 1/8th scale stuff simply can't handle the weight and torque of a gasser.....let us know how it holds up for you

RE: gotta shut him up
ORIGINAL: mike_humphreys The only real advice is to learn to drive your car better than he does. Practice, maintenance and learning to set your car up will serve you far better than people telling you that one or another engine will make you beat him. Apply the tortoise and hare principle. The fast he drives round the track, the more chance you have of winning because he'll crash every lap while you will be doing neat and consistant laps. 2 laps of the track at 40 seconds a lap if far better than a blistering 30 second lap and waiting 20 seconds before the marshall flips the car back on it's wheels.
it's a 5b so i'd assume it's pretty much straight line stuff only. ditch your 5b and buy an fgbaja if you really want to smoke him

wow, you guys have some crap neighbours...and the guy with the decibel meter needs a good tuning...i forgot it only takes one vocal tosser to spoil everyone's fun...when i lived in the uk it was the same x10. I know the dirt bikes up here are having a hard time nowadays running in one particular gravelpit that's been used for years...reason...new fancy subdivision built next door and the city a-holes who move to the country and then want to tell country folk to stop doing what they've been doing for decades..because the city people don't like it..it's a cancer that is spreading...some bmw or merc driving git even complained to the local authority about the smell, and wrote to the paper saying that this practice should be banned, when one farmer did his yearly cow poop spread on his fields...wtf my adage has always been either "when in rome etc....", and "if you don't like it, f*&^ off" ....unfortunately, however, the law always seems to favour the killjoys nowadays

i don't think noise is really a problem...there's enough open space around every built up area, if you've ever been to a NHRA, indy car, nascar, F1, motogp, superbike, etc you'll know what noise is and our unsilenced gassers are no louder than the chainsaws you hear in my neck of the woods every weekend this time of year. noise isn't a problem unless you're running in a subdivision, out in the industrial areas and beyond it bothers no one.

RE: Serious Question
demographically there just isn't enough people in N.America with 5thscales to make it viable..here there is a big 10th and 8th scene, a local track with organized events, indoor track and they had an indoor stadium event last winter with 150 turnout to race, even made it into the local papers,...i built a track for 5th and apart from the opening get together where we had 9 runners show up now it's hard to get more than 3-4 once or twice a year. while price has a part to play image also has a lot to do with it. Our cars are perceived by the vast majority as little toys rather than a serious hobby, big boys toys are dirt bikes, quads, 4x4's, hotrods, anything you can shoehorn a V8 into[:D][8D]etc so uptake for "toy cars" is poor; milestone got rid of it's 5th track cos it wasn't paying it's way because there weren't enough people using it and that's in the state with the highest population density and best weather...financially a largescale track isn't viable and even at personallly owned tracks on private land getting enough people to show for a meet is hard.

search for blueprints of the full size engines and then scale down the measurements. you will need an extensive machine shop, or access to one, to be able to the grind crank, cam, make valves, heads, rods etc

the losi paddles are 40 series..i've a set here but they were too small for this build...wide too..just wish they'd come out with an MT sized 1:5 paddle... ran the new motor for about 2 mins so far, even running 1/4turn rich it has more giddy up than the old 2 bolt and i fit ever stops raining here i'll head to the hill . a Mk2 is in also the brainbox, with the help of a buddy in the industry i'm working on getting some 1/5th scale solid axles into production, hope to have some prototypes before the end of the year to try out and figured the best durability test would be achieved on the receiving end of an OBR 61cc twin in a new chromemoly chassis and now Sean is tuning for nitrous maybe an oddified wet kit [;)]

RE: Advice on tube bending
it you have a welder then best way is to get a piece of flat steel plate, 1/4" +, draw out your shape then weld steel bar stock about 10mm diameter and 1" long at intervals along the curve...more at tighter sections, then clamp the tube then at one end, heat the tube and bend it around the welded on bars, clamp the other end when you have the shape and let cool...job done[;)] if it straightens any when you un clamp it then reclamp at heat again and let cool. doing it this way makes sure each piece is the same

+1, but finding an RN these days is near impossible...one came up not long ago in Denmark for 300euro...used but no dents they were designed for 26cc motors and as foxy says...awesome pipes VRC pipes aren't far behind and are made by the same manufacturer as the RN's were.... the standard vrc is best suited for non ported motors (though works well with port work done) and the pro version for 26cc+ ported motors..i found unsilenced make more power.

RE: Why are tyres so expensive?
I've been looking into the cost of getting some wheels and tires made up, cost of molds is 10k for each, so tire, foam and wheel is 30k .you get close to 1mil hits off those but the initial outlay is not cheap (hence i have abandoned any idea of getting more MT options out there.) you also need to know your plastics and rubber compounds. there are many more nitro and electric punters than 1/5th scale so volume = cheaper hence the smaller scales being a lot cheaper....also alot of the race rubber comes out of europe where everything is twice the price to begin with than here seeing as all the different manufacturers charge roughly the same price then one can assume 1 of 2 things or a bit of both...either they are colluding with the competition to price fix or they cost more to make than you think, also don't forget the chain of commerce....there are middle men to pay...manufacturer-distributer-dealer-punter all but the last one is marking up to make money
