RE: NGH 9cc Engine input???
ORIGINAL: psgugrad has anyone here seen/heard anything about or seen one run at your flying field? It seems like an interesting concept and I want one, I just want to make sure I'm not buying a $200 paperweight. I've heard people knock gas engines this size, but after my first gas engine (a DLE 20 in a 4*120) I'm pretty much abandoning glow. I like the 4*120, but have to carry it in my company cargo van as it won't fit well in the car and it's a pain as I have to unload the van first, etc.... I have a well-worn 4*40 that I love, but the covering is coming off from castor oil. In a 40-sizer, the cost of glow fuel isn't really a concern, but the gas engines don't get slop all over your plane, plus they run soooooo much better. Glow engines only run great when the compression, carb settings, fuel, and glow plug are all 100% perfect...move any one of those 4 factors even slightly from ideal and all bets are of. THe gas motors are so much less sensitive. I would be curious to know: How does the thing run? Is it powerful...really as powerful as a .46 glow...at least a plain-bearing one like an LA .46? are parts available? are they reasonable priced, or does NGH try to pull an OS Max on us with regards to parts pricing? what is the cylinder construction? steel sleeve? chrome-plated brass? any input appreciated Mike Norris
I'm testing one GT9 for our local distributor . Engine is very powerful if you have in mind the fuel it uses (no nitro) , much more powerful than the OS46LA. Needles settings process is more similar to a glow engine than a Walbro fitted gas engine, but on mine i have no problem to get a reliable and low rpm on idle and very good transition. Also i've tested on this engine a new spark plug 1/4*32 with iridium tip. I must make more test, but i'm satisfied with performance with this new spark plug. Sleeve construction with steel sleeve, no ABC or ABN construction. If you have in mind the engine comes with a true RCEXL ignition, a special and a costly spark plug, the fuel delivery system pump-regulator, i think is well priced. But also you must think where you want to mount this engine. The CDI , battery for the CDI and FDS, opto kill switch and or a switch will increase the total weight of your model, not a good idea if you want for extreme 3D. But there are much more airplane models for this engine. Only remember to use a good quality oil mixed at the correct ratio needed by this engine ( no less than 25:1) . Best regards

I've tested this little small engine without muffler because i think is better on a new engine at break-in phase. Also i'm testing the engine with many mufflers to see how it performs . The exhaust pattern of port and holes is the same as OS55AX, JBA56F and more. i'm planning to test with AX box exhaust, Tower muffler, stock NGH , TT46 pro muffler and a tuned pipe. Best regards

RE: NGH 9cc
ORIGINAL: fiery My engine (or should I say engine accessories) had the following faults ''out of the box'' 1. One of the screws on the pump was cross threaded. Resolved by myself. 2. Carb low speed needle was not centred on fuel nozzle. Resolved by myself. 3. Carb fuel nozzle inlet not centred on high speed neeedle. It was drilled ''off centre''. Result being, the engine could not be leaned out as the high speed needle tip could not enter the orifice. As a result the supplied carb was for all intents useless. There is no purpose to the membrane at the front of the carb. It simply acts as a seal. I have returned the carb to HiModel with a note explaining the defects and requesting a replacement. We will see. In the meantime to avoid owning a paperweight I am adapting a standard 46 size twin needle glow carb to work with the pump and engine. Initial running results are promising although the low speed needle on the replacement carb requires a finer taper to ensure clean transition from idle to full speed.
Sorry to read all issues you have with the engine. Mine works VERY well. On the video idle seems to be not very reliable , it's my fault because i lost the pushrod retainer on the lever. Also i must close the LNS almost 2 turns from factory settings. Best regards and good luck with HiModel ....

Yes , i've repaired some RCEXL ignitions with damaged spark plug cable. Here you can see a video after repairing the damaged cable , put a new shield mesh, and without the plug cap installed to simulate a gap of about 12 mm (1,2 cm). If the spark does not jumps at repairing zone , that's fine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCQElFNWfZ4&list=UUbpPNidyR8Wt1PdLXSZlVuA&index=1&feature=plcp All wou need is a kit to do so. Best regards

Direct swap apart from two points... As w8ye states the timing must be set around 28 degress Before Top Dead Centre. To mount the sensor correctly (which will now sit off to the right when veiwed from the front) I did drill and tap an extra 3mm hole to allow 2 fixing points. I also ended up having to use the 'larger of the two' sensor mounting brackets that are supplied with the 'RCEXL Unit' . I had to completely remove one side of the mounting bracket to enable the sensor to fit without interfering with the forward flank crankcase webbing. If you have trouble fitting I could supply a photo if neccesary. Plug Cap. Using the standard RCEXL unit - the spring clip that secures the two pressed steel sides of the plug cap is too thick and prevented my cap from seating correctly. To get around this I merely removed the ring from the Saito Cap (which is made from a slighly thinner cross section wire) and swapped onto the RCEXL cap. Happy Landings Am6.
ORIGINAL: Antique A needle braring on the big end of the rod is necessary because most fliers don't want to use enough oil in the fuel...Large converted 2 strokes can get by on 10%, smaller ones need the same amount as a small glow engine...Then there will be complaints about oil on the fuselage, just like glow engine...Can't have it both ways..... If the needle bearing was not necessary Tom at BME would not go to the trouble of pushing the crank pin out and replacing it with a harder one....
Like Saito small gas engines ? The FG36 (36cc) does not have needle bearings on the con-rod. Like oldies spark plug small engines ? Lubricity of gas(petrol) is much more than methanol. I've count the needles on a small needle bearing availables today (caged), and the contact surface with the crankshaft pin is so small and can cause more troubles than a plain bushing. RE: DLE55 Rear Exhaust Conversion
ORIGINAL: dynasel I would like to know if its possible to rotate the cylinder head to make it a Rear Exhaust Engine. I am sure the Pin on the Piston where the Ring seats has to be relocated as well... Rear Exhaust type engine will still use the original muffler as Pitts and will save the cost of buying a cheap Pitts supplied by 3rd party in China which normally fails after few flights, additionally no need to cut the cowls from different angles and sides.
If you rotate the cylinder head, when the piston is at TDC , there is no skirt surface closing the exhaust port, and crankcase will lost pressure and air-gas mixture. You will need a different piston (if available) wit different skirt surface on wrist-pin exhaust side, and relocated ring pin. On the NGH35 engine (user configurable for side or rear exhaust) the factory supply a new piston for rear exhaust version. Best regards

I've read time ago and periodically, in this forum and many others many people talking about the lowest capacity of an engine to run with gasoline. Years ago the limit was 50cc, then 30cc, then 20 cc ..... and when some manufacturer shows to the market a good product , reliable, low fuel cost operation, and powerful, this people does not say 'i was wrong' ......
