RE: Canalisers, fins and things, and whirlygigs..
ORIGINAL: flyintexan Jeff, my guess would be that its a whirlyfin. Nat Penton's work goes back so many years. His simple solution comes from a simple understanding of center of lift, cg, and rotational airflow. Keeping the center of lift and cg near one another (in all axes) promotes more pure flying in all axes. Small whirlyfingigs located some significant distance away from the cg can help certain issues, but if made large enough to have significant effect in one axis, will likely be a detriment in another. -mark
Mark how recent is that photo? I like the idea that the thingamajigs are more effective near the CG. To me what youyr saying makes sense. Do you have any pictures of your Pentanthelon to post? I still think your plane is full of great innovations and looks to me like it flys on a rail. Thanks, Mike Mueller

RE: Composite-ARF Integral, kinda build thread
Brenner, Dave I respect all the input and your analytical minds. So I feel overmatched in the argument and this thread is supposed to be about the Integral. Which by the way is an absolute pleasure to own. I hate that the plane is being discontinued. APC trust me they have gotten plenty out of most of us. They have been and continue to be #1 in RC props. I'm sure I've bought 100's of their props and not because I'm replacing broken ones. Just a lot of prop experimenting and power supply changes over the years. Brenner I know what you do for Whirlpool and trust me it's highly respected. Dave your a prop expert and I have followed your lead time and time again. Your point on mounts are all true. Given all that all I will say is I'm a big fan of stiffer props. I do not like the flimsy tips on APC larger diameter E. props. So here's a question. Will a prop (talking APC E.) running many many hours on an electric setup say a whole season or 2. Will it fatigue? Can the tips get out of track from each other? Thanks, Mike

RE: Composite-ARF Integral, kinda build thread
Dave I know of 4 seperate cases this last season of motor ejections with both outrunners and inrunners. Dave Snow twice ejected and his last one was his brand new Neu inrunner. Chris Moon ejected a Pletty firewall mounted and we had another firewall mounted ejection from an AXI F3A at my field this year with Gary Stephens. All using an APC E. My opinion is there is a correlation. Anyone is free to argue it but it's still my opinion that the E. props are too thin and too large for the stress and I'd advise using a CF prop or the APC's with the CF reinforcement. Who knows what side forces and turbulance situations happen in the air. I saw a video on violent worrble and its unbelievable what happens once it gets started. No mount or fuse could hold up to the stress. Does anyone know the link to that video? Thanks, Mike

RE: Composite-ARF Integral, kinda build thread
ORIGINAL: twoturnspin Lot easier to just buy a RASA than laminate an APC.
I agree with that. I'm using the Rasa 20x15 on my Sickle/ Pletty average draw is 3500 mils for the Masters pattern. I'm pulling 75 to 80 maps static. It's a perfect fit for that particular plane. The Sickle has a ton of drag and benefits from the increased speed this prop gives me. It could also be my style that fits the incresed speed it affords. I'm convinced that some of the larger APC props are flexing at the tips and have caused some violent worrble situations that when it gets going will pull the motor right out of your plane. I know of many many guys who have ejected motors and everyone I know of was using an APC E. style larger prop. I'm thinking their not stiff enough. But hey that's my opinion based only on what I've observed. Mike Mueller

RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
ORIGINAL: cdodom I'm using a 2 cell lithium Ion battery with a jaccio regulator. I can get about 10 to 11 flights on it in one day. This might be a stupid question. Does anyone know if 2.4 receivers use less power than a 72MHz PCM receiver ?
Great question Chris On my 72MHZ JR equipment I was using a 730 mil 2 cell thunder power lipo and a simple Jaccio 6 volt regulator. I like the Jaccio stuff the best because it's so simple and light. On an average Masters sequence I consumed 35 mils. I usually charged after 6 flights just because. This is with and Electric setup and those numbers will change drastically with an engine due to vibration. Also be careful with regualtors in a shaky engine plane. I have seen a number of cases where the wires break going into the regualtors due to excessive vibration. I suggest supporting the wires leading to the regualtor to avoid a possible attrition breakage. With the SD10 it will operate until the voltage goes below 2 volts which is a good buffer. Obviously the servos won't move at 2 volts. Also very important not to push too much voltage into the receiver. I do not know the actual limit but I'd say your regualtor should not exceed 6 volts. RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
Well things went great today. If I knew it was going to work this well I went of had it in the plane at the end of the contest season. It has an identical feel to my old radio. Except this is more modern and of course 2.4 that I needed. I had a good radio before this and I feel this is going to serve me just as well. The interest in the radio is very high here. Thanks Mark for all your help getting setup. It was worth the wait. M²

RE: Airtronics SD10G for pattern
ORIGINAL: IflyPATTERN While I have not flown with the SD-10G yet (will fly with it this weekend for the maiden), the features that the competetive pattern flyer demands out of a transmitter these days (2048 resolution, assignable switches, mixes, etc...) are all found on this transmitter. Programing is such a sinch with this transmitter, and even if you somehow weren't sure how to use it, the manual is VERY is to read and find info. IMHO, the airtronics radio is the best competive radio for the buck and has a very comfortable feel! Brandon Landry Team Airtronics, Team Coolpower, Team YS
Hey Brandon good luck. I test it in my pattern plane this weekend too. It's a pretty fired up radio. It has everything I was looking for. I hope the weather allows me to get it in the air. Man it's been terrible up here. Hey Joe I heard they may be a CF APC clone of the 20.5x14 soon. I hope so that just seems to be a sweet spot prop for the Integral. I'm convinced that a stiffer prop is imprtant and I'm looking to stick with them from now on. Mike

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
Hey guys this thread has turned out to be more interesting to me than expected. I've learned a lot from it and all the posts have been appreciated. President Obama spoke at the UN today and made this statement. "Obama said he will never apologize for defending U.S. interests. But he sought to dispel what he said has become "an almost reflexive anti-Americanism" that has swept the globe." Question I have for you guys from around the world is this. Does US policy in foreign lands and our high profile have a negative effect on our flyers? Is there a carry over that prompts some to call us cry babies? No answer is wrong if it's heartfelt. I'm just trying to understand so I can handle it better. If so what would you do if you were a team member and you felt a sense of this. Note I'm not saying this went on at the Worlds but I'd like your perspective if you think teams are attatched to the perceptions and policy's of its people and governments? I just want to get an honest perspective and opinion from the people who were there and could take the time to do so. To the posters that shared there experience thanks you gave me the glimpse that I really needed. Thanks, Mike

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
ORIGINAL: Kema USA competitors not in podium -> bad judging/European judges -> we lost because of bad judging, but we were still the best fliers-> cry in RCU USA competitors in podium -> judging was fine -> we won because we were best -> tons of GO USA post in RCU I don't think you can even say there are such group as European judges. European countries differ a lot from each other and there are always competition between EU countries. Hell we have even had two world wars in past 100 years. Well because 2011 WC is in USA you can celebrate USA team victory now, because WC is never a fair game. Hell we can even name the winners here and skip the actual competition and save everybody's travel money. Start making ''Winners of WC 2011'' baseball caps now...
Kema you misinterpretted what I'm getting at. My problem is with the disregard for the rules not any country, continent or person. I think most would agree the US flyers to be a great group of guys who display the best in sportsmanship. I have not heard any negative comments from any of them. Nor would I because who am I anyway? I'm sure they are not happy with a third place result and were hoping for better and are in the process of understanding what happend. They are used to having more success and this can't be easy for them. For the most part they are a very young team and as I told one of them before he left give it everything you have because you never actually know if you will be in a position to do it again in your lifetime. Life changes rapidlly for young people and the time constraints and life's decisions are not always going to allow them to be available to do a world championships. For many it's a one time shot at glory. Of course we take great pride in our team and we know we sent our best. All of them prepared very hard for the contest and represented us with a tremendous effort. We are proud of them. If you want to acuse someone for being upset blame me not the team. I have nothing to lose they would if they complained which they are not. So I ask you to do the right thing and say your sorry to the US team for your comments. I understand what you said but I think you should see that they are misguided. Repectfully, Mike Mueller

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
OK now where hearing something concrete. Here's what will happen if this disregard for the rules continues. Good young talented flyers will stop trying as well as many others to be a part of the sport. Rules are rules and I have an extreme problem with top level trained judges who are afraid to downgrade top flyers who do not follow them. How did we get to the point where these twinkie roll so called snaps, wing over way more than 1.5 wingspan stall turns, stalless spin entry, undefined straight and level entry's to manuevers become the norm? We don't score well in my part of the country doing this. I'm all for a flying style a type of model or powerplant or whatever setting a trend but not rules violations that evolve into the only way to do it for some select people. It's crazy and if not corrected will lead to the demise of the sport. Mike

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
(quote) Unfortunately my experience at the WC's left me a little disenchanted and much less interested in participating at a WC in the future. For me win or lose it doesn't matter as long as the flights & tests are fairly assessed. Unfortunately, I honestly didn't think the pilots were treated evenhandedly and this is pretty rough considering the time and expense that people go to compete.
Twoturn that statement has me thinking that there are probably more out there that share your disappointment in what you/ they saw. I'm sure that attending the Championships is a huge endevour that costs a small fortune with a considerable amount of time and sacrifice. Based on your experience do you think that there may be others who are questioning whether they would ever want to do it again? Anyone want to express an opinion on this? I can tell you that I'd be very upset if I attended an event that I thought was tainted by bias and rules being bent or not adhered too. But I wasn't there and I'm again searching for some answers to some perplexing questions I have. I still find the silence to be very odd. I appreciate the comments so far and I promise I won't go too much further and I'm not here to slam anyone or any country. It's all brought on by the odd silence. Thanks, Mike

What is the real story from Portugal?
I have to say that in all the times I have frequented RCU the previous World Championships had much better coverage. I've yet to see any detailed reports of what actually happened. Question is does this have any hidden meanings? Can anyone who was there share some info on the quality of the flying site and organization of the event? Can we get some opinions on the event itself. Who flew well how did QQ go from winning the Championship in Argentina to such a low placing? What style of flying was in vogue? Inquiring minds want to know. How about a podium shot? Nothing... It's like the whole event didn't happen to me. Thanks, Mike

Hey guys we could have shared the wealth from the St Louis contest in Masters. We had 12 flying in the class. Our wind conditions were not as bad as yours. Rick congrats on having a viable successful contest. Also I really like the contest report here on RCU with all the great pictures. I wish there were more contests with this type of reporting. 1 More thing. Get Mark Radcliffe to the D4 Championships!!! Man is that great to see him trying it out again. I was in Advanced when I made my comeback too. Trust me it takes a while to get back in the groove. See you guys soon at what should be a huge contest in Hebron Kentucky in 3 weeks. Mike Mueller
ORIGINAL: Doug Cronkhite Looking at Andrew's score sheet, I'm curious how 3 judges see his 1/2 outside loop as a 10, and one scores it a 6. I mean.. I understand people see things differently, but damn.. 4 points? TBLR should sort that out, but that judge does seem to be giving significantly lower average scores per maneuver.
The judge is either blind, didn't see the manuever, or is a cheater with an agenda. There's no way 3 can see a 10 and a guy can give a 6. Mike

Chris will have a new website up soon and he will be servicing the F3A flyers with a number of offerings. So far he has Plettenberg, Axi, Delro RC, YGE controllers and ZNLine products lined up. More stuff will be coming as he establishes himself. I'm very happy that we will have a US distributor for these products. Lord know's we need one badly. RE: First Pattern Contest
ORIGINAL: hook57 All this makes for great reading from a past pattern flyer (novice/advanced).  Although pretty much out of it the past twenty five years I've been itchy to get back into it so I'm getting ready (joined AMA again and even got my old number back!). I can't help but ask if this is the same Mike Mueller who flew in pattern contests back in the mid - late seventies, early eighties. Would've been at the Tri-Village (?) meet at Busse Woods, RC3 at Kickapoo Woods, down at Effingham, Salinas, etc. You might remember Larry Ott, Jerry Worth, even Tony Frakoviak (sic) was at our (RC3) contest. You might remember a kid named Mike Bliss (expert class) who I often traveled to contests with; last big contest was the 1980 Nats at Wilmington, Ohio.  I think you were flying masters or at least expert then. I loved pattern and was in awe at the way you guys flew those ships. I started with a Kaos 40, next a Tiger Tail (Kraft .61) then a Bootlegger (Rossi .60RE); of course who didn't have a Dirty Birdy back then.  Anyhow, I hope to eventually make it back into pattern in the near future. Mark
Hey Mark yes it's the same guy. I quit pattern for many years but I'm back for around 10 years now. If you get a chance we will be at the St Charles field on the labor day weekend. I can only be there on Saturday due to the fact that I have a wedding to attend on Sunday. If you make it for a bit give me a shout. Mike Mueller
