RE: Backup/Redundant batteries
The Dual battery back is in place to bring the plane back if one battery system fails during flight. Note: We need to also worry about the connectors we are using. The balance plug connectors on the main power batteries are not the best connector. Single point tin plated. I would replace the jumper wire every 200 flights. Some folks are not using a switch to turn on radio system. Plugging the battery into a jumper in to the rvcr. You need to check the contact area the pin. Some low cost jumpers are a folded contact this makes a very poor connection. It is ok if the unit is plug in once a day. But using a half dozen times a day is not good. Replace those with good contacts. And replace those every year. Take the old parts and put then a fun plane. So the question what is a good contact. The Old 3 pin deans is good. Two contact points on a solid pin. There are others don’t save 8 dollar’s spend the money here also. Get the right connector’s and replace them yearly. See you on the flight line. Mark

RE: JR 12X battery charging ???
Cell Formation All cells should (must) go thru one controlled charge/ discharge cycle. This cycle will get the chemistry in the battery working correctly. Some cell vendors do this, some use it a sorting process other vendors skip this step. Note: enloop cells go thru a good formation process. The marketing plan for the enloop is for the consumer that just wants a battery that works when it comes out of the package and as a bonus can be charged. The charger that the vendor supplies with the product is not designed for cell Formation. Lithium Batteries NEED to have this done. The chemistry on the anode is created during this cycle. With the good chargers we have today we can do this and we should. Mark

RE: Practice question, how to improve by yourself
Flying by your self can be done. It is a long slow process. The method of going to a contest and getting data on what are doing right and wrong is a good one. When you get the data it can be hard on you, as you will have worked on getting it right for months and still do something wrong. I fly by myself, as in no else at the field. When there are others flyers there I have trained a few to watch for simple things straight line ,vertical pull ups, simple stuff, not the maneuvers or you will lose them. I have couple to trained to call but most will just watch. For many years the closest pattern plane was 4.5 hours away. In the past few years had a pattern pilot move in the area about one hour away. We trade off and on over the year flying at each other’s field. John K can tell you the story about when I hugged him at the pattern contest in Columbia MO. Work on straight and level flight first it is the heart of all Maneuvers. I fly Masters. The competition is with me, the judge’s rate me on what I have done my fellow flyers that I trust tell what is going on. My biggest reward is having them say that there was improvement. That is my goal improve every year. In years past the first pattern plane I would see beside my own was at the first contest of the year. It is fun Mark (Flying Pattern in the neutral zone)

RE: Rudder on the Right Stick
Howdy Setting out here in the Snow. I have been watching this thread. I fly Mode 3 some times Called Mode 4. That is the primary Roll control on the left stick with throttle. Yaw and Pitch on the Right stick. So the Primary flight controls are split. The classic test was low inverted flight you can hold Pitch stick stable and rock the wings (roll) with out having a problem. Plus side you can learn to fly faster this way. You can take long periods of time off and still fly ok. The fine motor controls of mixing when Primary flight controls are one stick can get lost with time. I could not understand the need for a dual rates for years I would just move a stick needed roll rate. I built in Expo in the linkage. The negative side. When you get into Pattern you will need to learn to mix with right hand Pitch and Yaw. This will take some time. But you can get it with some time. Flown Pattern for 30 years. Had a lay off for 4 year s from Competition. Back flying in contests in 2005. I fly Masters. Over the years it is fun to see the top pilots that fly spilt stick Vs the Crazy stick flyers. Was fun to talk to Ivan years ago about flying the correct way, glad to see Chad flys the correct way. The bottom line is what ever you can make work is good. Brain for you up north it may not be to bad. See you at the contest this spring. Radios Today I fly the 12 X with a cross mix . My 10 has been moded by JR. Have fun:

RE: Zeque Build Glow Powered...
Troy Repair looks great. A couple of questions. Did you use silk or fiber glass cloth over the wood? What are using for paint. ? I was going to use PPG on my rebuild be the local dealer here is non supportive. The DuPont dealer is not much better. On my travels this year going to find a paint dealer that will help. I have one back in South Dakota that will do about any thing but he is 750 miles away. Thanks Mark Plane is put together and will fly with out a prefect match of paint this year. When weather gets a little better.

Troy Thanks for the data. Not much to do but fiddle with the planes flying weather is a little cool -15 below and a little windy 35 mph in blowing snow. Will get plane set close and I agree needs to fly. The Pinnacle is next on the flat table for last of pre flight checks. Flat table seen in the background, these were built by Greg F’s Dad a number of years ago. Mark

Howdy It is all back together. It was lot of fun. 5 lasers running it get it straight and all square. Carbon fiber 45 X 45 mat in the missing carbon fiber areas. Armid fiber about equal in weight to .75 oz fiber glass back mat in the balsa areas. New honey comb in a number of areas. Worked hard on keeping the weight down should come in at 10 .5 lbs. I bought the plane in a damaged state to see if it could be rebuilt. Look forward to flying this spring 3 feet of snow in the yard today. Mark

RE: Nylon coated steel fishing line??
When using coated fishing leader as a control link. You need to use muli strand cable. These guys make nice stuff plus you can get in colors. http://www.tygerleader.com/ As a check how many are going to place two full gallon jugs of fuel on the rudder to check there control system. There are many ways to solve any problem what ever you can make work is the best one. Mark

RE: Nylon coated steel fishing line??
Have used nylon coated steel fishing cable for a number of years in pattern planes. Good quality muli strand 15 lb will work just fine 20 lb looks better. I have used both. As you can see in the picture I also fold back the leader and use flame to melt the nylon. You then can use heat sink tubing to dress up the area if you like. Tettra and IM make nice couplers Durbo are ok also check and make the hole that the wire goes thru does not have a sharp edge. I check the area when in clean the plane for wear and replace if needed. Some planes have more then 500 flights and are ok.

RE: Defilbrator and DX 7
Jim I have an ICD I have been flying for the past 12 years with one. On my second one. When the first one was installed I as on the AVID program. I had Medtronic’s the ICD vendor came down from Minneapolis we ran a complete site survey. I work for a Radio Company Rockwell Collins, Inc. Take a took at the company web site. We tested a lot of RF from DC to Light. Including all of the RC radios that we could find. I had no problems with the RC stuff. FM PCM AM. A lot of checking was done on the AM side as the square wave could look like the heart beat. The lead going from the ICD to the heart will act as an antenna. To figure that out I went into one of the Screen rooms and we ran a scan to see how well the lead would act as an antenna. Test were run with the device on and interlocked off and an EKG machine hooked out to watch the heart and read the data from the ICD. All of these test and more were conducted with a Medical staff in place the device vendor and my team of EE’s and ME’s. There are a couple of areas in the plant that I should not go. And a few things that are not the smartest thing to do. I would not start chains saws they can cause some problems. The device maker and med staff are going to default into the safe mode. It is going to be up to you. To understand the risks. PM me if you like. Mark Woytassek
