RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
BTW, I use a scalpel (hobby knife) to remove the notch so those Futaba male connectors work in other females. My best luck is approaching parallel to the wires with a cutting board below. This is a link to the beginning of the thread and the user ctflyboy keeps the roster for the Corsair Brotherhood. The only thing you have to do is post that you have an interest in Corsairs and would like to belong. I Think everyone in this thread would be definitely eligible. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3109744/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm Something has changed with rcuniverse there are times when the links time-out before connecting. It seems to work okay to navigate within a thread but opening a new thread is often an issue. I tried for hours last night to post this and finally gave up. Things seem better today. jimm

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Kwik, I usually do not post to questions waiting for some of the others but it sounded like you needed a quick conformation. This connector is for the pickup. I too have the Saito FG 57 in my ESM Corsair and glad to see they have changed the connections to match what is on the FG20 and FG30. I suffered through the ignition issues with the FG20 when it first came out but haven’t had as many problems as you with the FG57 ignition. BTW, the only standard they seem to have on colors for wires is pick a new one to meet the happenstance of their production. Hope your flying goes well.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Even though I feel comfortable with me making the repairs I find when I send it to them it can cheaper. They can test and know what really needs repaired/replaced and you get a guarantee. Couple of years back I did an inadvertent landing using the right hand side of the aircraft instead of continuing the base leg of approach. It ripped out one of the 170R3 jugs and they fixed it in a couple of weeks for less than what I was going spend for the parts I was going to order. Motor still running fine in the new Super Stearman. BTW, only thing I salvaged on SS was rudder and landing gear. My experience and opinion. jimm

RE: Great Plane's J-3 Piper Cub - 60. Good first kit?
First I want to state that I have had this model since 1999 and it is still flying. The only real things that I changed are: My first variation from the manual is that I used the Saito FA-72. The 62, 72 and 82 are very interchangeable if you want a little more or less power. I tried the 62 (because I had one) and it was very scale but hard to handle on windy days. The decals for the NC number are not of the same quality as the rest of the model. I had another set made and used my AMA # as the NC number. The plastic windows are brittle and have been replaced but I was more skilled on the second install, five years later. The landing gear needs to be replaced with a scale looking set if you want it to look more scale. The gear are more than strong enough but not even close to scale. I got the 1/5th scale from Robart and painted with fuel proof yellow spray. As far as the cabin interior goes, you will need to make something but that is an easy addition even after the aircraft is built. If something ever happens to my aircraft I will repair or rebuild because I really like how it handles; just like the full scale at low power and like a trainer other times. My Thoughts, jimm

RE: GP Waco?
The Saito 200R3 worked great for this model. It is listed in a couple of reviews as being able to produce ~15 pounds of thrust (depending on prop) and I can say that with a 17x6 it certainly went vertical. The aircraft weighed in and 14.8 pounds and with the way it is configured I did not have to add weight to get the CG in line. I set the CG @ 5-1/4 per the manual and that seemed to work very well. Some of this is a duplicate post but I thought these parts were relevant for this post. The Saito 200R3 is a very sweet motor and very forgiving. I set the initial high end at 4 turns out so the first 5 minutes would be very heavily lubricated. The motor started right up after using the built-in primer spout at the carburetor’s opening. I am using the McDaniel ignition system so did not notice the #3 cylinder going cold at low RPMs. I did however test it after I ran the 4th 10 minute break-in run because of what I had read here. I removed the ignition system and started the engine with a glow starter; one cylinder at a time. The motor started at ~2500 RPM setting just as easy as if it were on all three. Then you just walk the igniter to the other cylinders (very carefully) and start the other two. I used an IR temperature gauge to judge who was running and how well. #1 and #2 ran between 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit depending on RPM. #3 would shut down and go to 90-110 after an idle below 2100 RPM. I could be running a little rich which could have caused this. I am running now at ~2-1/4 turns on the High Speed needle. All I know for sure is that problems with #3 never occurred with the ignition system. I now have the ignition set to come on at 1/3rd throttle and less and I’ve flown 6 flights (10-12 minutes each) without an issue. I have several Saito radials and use an ignition on all of them. I never worry about an ignition on the singles even the 46 seems to work fine after started. This a collection of videos showing the first flight for my new Great Planes WACO YMF-5 ARF at the local RC Aircraft field. She has real light wing loading so when it hit a bump on what was to be a high speed taxi; she went airborne. I panicked and hit full throttle which caused a torque roll but fortunately I got it level, only now at 90 degrees to the runway. Otherwise flight went well, it handled great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS50bYSitsE Thanks, jimm

I totally agree, the Align starter is amazing. I've used it on as large as the FG30 with no difficulties. Light - 875 grams (1 pound 15 oz) with the 2200 mH 3 cell LiPo and powerful. The endurance (duration) is just as notable. I bought it because I was tired of fubling with the Sullivan on my Align 600N and now use it exclusively. Have not had a chance to try it on the FG-57 Twin but expect it to work as long as I start the process on the other side of TDC. jimm

I do not know because I have not tried other options but one thing is sure; anything that holds it for you will work. The method of attachment does not have to withstand the rigors of flight, only the travel from home to field and the final assembly before flight. Please pass on any other attachment ideas because there are too many hands required without something. jimm

RE: GP Waco?
I agree, soldering the nut on was a great idea. One more tip, you need to have a good hot iron to do this. If the iron is too small it will heat slow or not at all and that is what distroys the nylon insert. I have a Weller WES51 Analog Soldering Station and set it to 3/4 power to do the job and it worked great. It was rainy weather here today and grandchildren are gone so should have progress pictures tomorrow. jimm

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
If you do a search of the threads you’ll find one on that aircraft. I flew it for about 6 months with the FG-20 and it would do everything but hover. I think the FA-180/FG-30 would be required for that level of 3D flight. I’m putting the 200R3 in my GP-WACO and after it flies I’ll report how powerful it would be; I suspect it would be enough for that 10 pounder. Be sure to reinforce the mains or make all landing at 1G or less. That thread has plenty of tips. That is a good ARF and the support is good as well. I don’t have it anymore because I was just trying 3D; did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I sold the aircraft to a fellow club member and he electrified it. jimm

RE: GP Waco?
Congratulations on finding the ARF, I hope to get mine finished and in the air soon. Assembly is officially on hold until the 25th because my son and his family are visiting for the summer vacation. I too had thought about using two servos on the elevator but then I remembered that the Super Stearman (really the same size aircraft) has that same setup and it has been working fine. I have a hot enough solder gun so I used that rather than JB Weld. What I did was put on both wheel locks with solder in middle. If I get a chance I’ll try to send a photo. While I am rambling with opinions, I have all of the 3 cylinder Saito radials and the way I calculate how they will perform is only count performance from two of the jugs. The 90R3 works good for a 60 size aircraft, the 170R3 works good for 120 size, etc. I know I have the 170R3 on the Super Stearman and it won’t do 3D but it climbs until I cut the throttle and I usually fly it around the patch at half throttle or less and it is a 15lb aircraft. The ModelAviation.com review used a 95AX and said it was plenty of power. I am not making recommendation here only telling how I chose the Saito 200R3 for mine.

RE: GP Waco?
Free Bird et al, Just got off the phone with Hank at Sonic Tronics. He indicated that our problems were as a result of not having enough amperage to drive all three cylinders. He said we should have 1000 mA for each cylinder and that was why my 2300 mA 4-cell was not enough to keep things hot. I am going to try a 4200 mA 4-cell that I have but it will be a couple days before I can report. He also said that the only reason the 5-cell did not blow out a glow plug, besides being very lucky, was because I left part of the “servo wire on the battery, which offered enough resistance to lower the 6 volts. Battery not being charged to maximum and only run at start and 1/3 or less throttle also helped. Hope that helps, buying a new 3000mA or greater 4-cell battery is the cheapest of solutions so far presented. BTW, Hank invited anyone to call if they had more questions. jimm

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Robert it was seeing your Corsair Brotherhood number in your signiture block that let me know there was one. My first Corsair was the TF Gold in the early 90's when it first came out. I was the envy of many because I had the cockpit and a functioning flap. I could not figure out how to get all three to work from a single servo, which is the way it was configured. The directions back then were a little sparse. I have built two since then (they, like other aircraft have built-in expiration dates) and have another TFG kit waiting. I started the ESM 50cc Corsair a couple of months ago and working through it but not all ARF’s are made equally. I would be further along but I mentioned (well maybe pleaded) to my wife at how beautiful the GP WACO was and that I already had an engine for it. She got it for me for Father’s Day and the Corsair progress was slowed down. I am an admitted RC Junkie but my three favorite aircraft are F4U Corsair, WACO YMF, and Super Stearman. I was fortunate enough to set in a full scale F4U-1A in the early 80’s during an air show at what was Hamilton Army Air Field and got Pappy to autograph my log book. I now fly these older aircraft as a tribute those heroes and the aircraft they flew, as I day dream in the safety of the freedom they defended. I will PM ctflyboy aka George and go back to assembling rather than rambling on here. Jim "jimm" Melton

I feel like I am telling the experts, but here goes. I have always used Sanding Sealer Dope for balsa that was going to be painted. Just brush on a couple of coats and sand it to a smooth surface. Because the dope dries fast the entire process is fast. There have been times when I was in a pinch that I even made my own by adding talcum powder to clear dope. My two cents … jimm

RE: GP Waco?
Well it is time to go back to the drawing board. The ring exhaust I wanted to use does not fit and it looks like the modification necessary to make it fit is not going to be easy. I want to thank Free Bird for posting his photos; they helped me to see something I missed. When taking measurements for clearance on the ring I forgot to take into account the wooden cowl brace attached to the fuselage and the glow plug driver caps. If you look close at Free Bird’s second photo in the first group, you can see there is not much space for the exhaust, wood ring and glow plug wire housing. I am going to mount the engine again without the exhaust and take measurements again with the plywood ring and glow driver installed. BTW, the reason I asked for the exhaust exit at the 9 o’clock position is to match the aircraft in the photo. As you can also see from the full scale example, there is a gap between the fuselage and the cowl, which could solve the clearance issue. I’ll update after I decide how I will move forward. I included photos of both the standard Keleo ring and the custom so you can see the difference in clearance between cylinder head and exhaust.
