RE: AJ Slick 104 with DA85, anyone try combo ?
I just got the 104 Slick.....when I put in next to my 98" Aerworks.....well....I ordered a DLE111...man its a big airframe :) I'll go with stock mufflers, keep weight down and noise up ! Although that DA120 looks awesome (maybe one day).....I also see the 104 Slick is really built and set up for a twin....so I went with that, if it had a DA85 set up, I may have kept it and put in the 104. Thanks for input everyone.

AJ Slick 104 with DA85, anyone try combo ?
I have a DA85 in 98" Aeroworks.....thinking of putting the radio and motor into AJ Slick 104. Anyone try it? I know guys go with DA120....but I don't need to build the space shuttle. I am looking to build a nice light plane, something pretty tame, easy to fly, a giant foamie. The DA 85 drags around the Aeroworks with easy, the AUW is 23.5LBS, with 1700 wing area, whereas AJ104" is 2100 wing area, I hoping to come in the 24lbs range. Also, with light weight set up (lower power), would I need 2 servos per ale and rud? My Aeroworks, I am using HS7955TG at 6.6v...and no issues with 1 each ale and just 1 on rud, works great. The manual for AJ says to use 2 servos if going with 100cc or more. OR any other suggestions for nice light 85cc airframe ? Thanks

RE: Gyros for 3D flying?
I have played around with gyros for a few years, futaba 401's, here is my 50cc sbach with gyros. It has 3 gyros, yes 3, all surfaces. My normal flight mode I fly with very little gain, 20% non-head hold, it just makes the plane smoother and more stable (IMHO) it flies like a bigger plane.....then for some really low harriers and hovers, I flick the switch, go 80% Head-hold. Plane is rock solid, only 50cc, flies like 150cc. The 401's are great, they have remote gain, so I have 3 flight modes, and then another switch to turn them off. Honestly, in a 7 min flight, I might really use the gyros for 1 or 2 minutes. I approach the field, slow the plane down, line it up, then flick on gyros, and then focus on throttle management. Here are some videos of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvfUQbq_Uyc&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhYs2wBk0yo&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSNUSYyacos&feature=related I am sure someone could do this without gyros, but I just don't get enough "stick time" to practice...gyros good way to cheat. My 85cc plane also has gyros, I don't like as much with gyros, bigger planes are more stable and don't really benefit as much. I also have 50cc Yak, its a blast with gyros. What I can say, when I do all out crazy 3D, (bend the sticks), I flick off the gyros....as they can work against you.

How to cut weight of a wing tube ?
I have a 85cc Aeroworks Yak....looking to shave some weight from the wing tube (its 9oz).....a CF tube only saves 3 OZ....so I was wondering if you could drill holes in the factory tube to shed some weight ? Is the only load on the tube where the wing meets the fuse ? Is it possible to drill some holes in the middle and ends of the tube, and leave the area where wing meets the fuse solid ? Anyone try this ?

RE: AR7000 will not hold bind ?
ORIGINAL: BuschBarber Are you sure the Bind Button, on the DX7, is not being depressed, while you are turning on the Tx? I had this happen because I was leaning the Tx against a shallow wood rail on my flight stand. Each time I would turn on the Tx and when I turned on the Rx, the two would not ReLink until I went through the Bind Process, again. It was just luck that I set the Tx in the same place, twice in a row, or I might not have figured it out so easily. A ReBind was necessary, each time. Charging the Tx at .5a is not an excessive charge rate, but it is always possible to get a short as you plug the charger jack into the Tx. Usually that kills the fuse before damaging the radio. Does this happen for just one Model Memory or have you tried more than one Model Memory? Have you tried other Rx's or a different Tx with your Rx? Are there any lights flashing on the Rx when it fails to ReLink?
AHHH...I think you're on to something. Normally I but the TX on thr ground...but there was lots of snow, so I had the TX on the side of my flight box (where it leans on the box).....that could explain why sometimes it works and sometimes not...I'll re-try and let you know. Thanks Mark

AR7000 will not hold bind ?
I have a DX7 (AR7000 RX), and it will not hold the bind. When I turn off the RX, I need to re-bind about 8 out of 10 times. This happened after I charged the RX battery through the switch jack at 0.5a……did that cause this problem? Any fix…? Thanks

RE: AR9100 lost signal - need help
ORIGINAL: fizzwater2 You ought to put the voltmeter on the receiver input - in case there's losses in the wire and switch, measuring at the battery terminals would not show any of that. I doubt that your reduced range check would be attributed to voltage anyway, at least not in this case.
Thanks, it has a "soft switch", so power is not routed through the switch, its direct to the RX...my readings were direct at the RX..

RE: AR9100 lost signal - need help
ORIGINAL: BuschBarber Just because the Rx batteries have acceptable voltage, after the flight, does not mean that you did not have a voltage drop during the flight. You need to run a test, on the ground, monitor the voltage, stall all the servos manually, and see if you get an unacceptable voltage drop and a subsequent Brownout.
I did do that test (without charging)...I put a Y connector on each battery, and bent the sticks in all directions for a solid minute, the lowest voltage was only 5.98v....and that was with one battery only, I fly with 2 batteries, so I doubt I had Rx power loss...but you never know.

AR9100 lost signal - need help
I have this Rx in 50cc Sbach, with four antennas. I always check before each flight that each antenna is "bound" (solid lite)...noted yesterday that one light was "off" on one antenna, I then saw that the wire was broken at the plug. I still had 3 antennas, and it was a nice day (famous last words), so I did range check, and it seemed OK. So I proceeded to fly. In a long vertical up line, I noticed the plane acted different, as I came into the down line, proceeded to pull out and the elevator was very sensitive. I let sticks to neutral, and noted the plane would dive, managed to land OK, and then noticed the elevator was about 10 degrees down (at neutral), and the RX lites were flashing. This would indicate a "brown out"...but the batteries had ample power remaining. So I turned everything off, and on, and all was OK, elevator centered properly again (no adjustments to TX). My question...what the heck happened??? The 9100 manual says each time you add an antenna; you need to "re-bind" (to see the antenna)....so does that happen in reverse? It was bound with 4 antenna's, but flying with only 3? I also noticed on 2nd range check (after flight failure), the range was much less (barely 30 paces), whereas with 4 antenna's I can get 120 paces. I replaced the broken antenna wire, rebound, and its back to 120 paces for range check OK, and all working well. Any help/experiences would me much appreciated !

Need throttle curve help on gasser
I have DLE 55, my first gasser. Noted the throttle (butterfly) is much different responce to glow (barrel) type carbs. Specfically, with my gasser, at 1/2 throttle, I get 6300 RPM, and WOT I get 6700RPM....not much diff from 1/2 to WOT. The linkage is smooth and linear, I think the issue is that a butterfly carb doesn't work same as glow type. So my question...do you set in a throttle curve to compnsate...? If yes...do you still make the carb go WOT or do you set the curve that its MAX RPM...even if MAX RPM is not WOT ? Suggestions ?

RE: Servo torque help
ORIGINAL: ThumbSkull The reality is that because the ailerons are easily effective, the airframe won't impart much load on them. Another way to say it is that it's easier to roll the plane than turn it. The surface area is not the determining factor.
thanks, this makes sense...ALE input doesn't change direction of centerline of the plane...Newtons law, objects travel in straight lines, whereas RUD and ELE change direction and counter this inertia....so I think I now have my answer now and will put 178oz on ALE...just rely on grade 12 physics !!
ORIGINAL: exeter_acres I'm assuming one servo for each rudder half? In that case, 7985 on each rudder half and then the 7955's on the aileron.
yes it is split ELE...so that is 178oz on each side. My thoughts are that ALE has larger surface area, so put more torque there....however, when doing hi-alpha or waterfall, it would be nice to have all that torque on ELE...I don't think the ALE will take same abuse as ELE...

one other important note, when you unplug the remote gain on the assan the servo goes totally dead....no control at all, just a word of caution, whereas the 401 gyro will default to the non-head hold mode if something happens to the remote gain so you still have control.

RE: To Gyro or not to Gyro?
ORIGINAL: autorot Hi, one question: When you use a gyro on nose gear (for take off and landing) you use Heading lock mode or normal mode? For take off no problem i think in HH, but for landing... during flight, gyros is desactivate and you don't know the direction lock by the gyro during retract and activation for landing... I have kust tested normal model on my F15 skymaster nose (gyro ASSAN G410, cheap and well) Regards, Sébastien
You can switch on/off HH mode anytime during flight, as long as you don't change sub-trims, and sticks are centered when you do so. I use 3 Futaba 401's in 3D airplane, and I switch from HH, to non-HH, and OFF throughout the flight. I might swich on/off 10 times in 15 minute flight. Again, don't change sub-trims, and leave sticks centered when you switch on gyros.

RE: perry pump for OS 120 AX - does it help
ORIGINAL: airraptor this is a common problem on all the AX engines above 55. my 120 now will now stay running long in the midrange now matter what i do to the idle setting. a 17x4 seems alittle on the small side. i ran a xoar 17x6 with stock muffler and pulled just fine at 10.5 lbs. it wasnt electrice 3d power but would pull out slowly. with a pipe it spins the APC 16x8 at 9,800 peak and about 9,600 just right
The 17 X 4 does seem small by "spec"...but I have tested many props with RPM guage and digital thrust guage, and I found a 17 x 4 (w) spools up fast and gives tonnes of bottom end. On a 10.5lb plane, I set my 17 x 4 to 9600 RPM (nice and rich)....and it pulls out of a hover faster than any electric ! Within 5 seconds it is out of sight. If you do 3D, try an APC 17 X 4 (W)...you'll be amazed at the vertical pulling power. In level flight you stay below 1/2 power (will over rev), but in vertical climb, it pulls amazing. For $20 its worth a try [:D]

Anyone try the ASSAN 410 GYRO ?
I found this Gyro on-line as low as $40....it looks like a knock off of the Futaba 401 Gyro. The main difference being that this gyro has no digital swtich and no delay switch....yet if you use hi-speed digital servo, this is a non-issue anyways. In trying to compare to Futaba 401, the price difference is HUGE ! The Futaba 401 has SSM sensor....where as this is a "quatrz vibration sensor".......are these the same thing ? OR is does the Futaba 401 have a better sensor ??? Here is a review on it : http://www.assan.cn/main/index-news-12-en.html Here is manufacture website : http://www.assan.cn/main/GA410.html So is this GYRO a waste of money......I mean if it's doesn't work well and it results in a crash, the savings are gone in repair costs !!
ORIGINAL: gaRCfield Yes my 120AX with a 16x8 prop pulled my Venus off the ground almost into a vertical - it's an animal of an engine even in the lower RPM zone. People have even suggested swinging a 17x6 with this engine. Also if fuel consumption is not drastically different between the two, the price point of the AX makes it a little more favorable. Either way I probably won't get an engine until January, and if you've followed any of my posts you know I could say AX now and Saito by the end of the day[;)] I still would like to know what muffler would work in this plane IF I were to use the AX.
I use stock muffler (POWER BOX), I run the engine on Wildcat 20% (20% oil), and I swing APC 17x4W, great prop for 3D, just don't go past 1/2 throttle in level flight [;)] I have played with 16x6, 17x6, 16.5 x 5, and favorite is APC 17x4 W. Its like being in low gear, when going vertical with gravty pulling a 10lb straight down (no aid of lift from wings), this prop hauls ass !!!! For pattern not a good prop (over revs), i'd use 17x6 for pattern, but serious 3D, go 17x4W, and keep it a bit rich (I set 9300 MAX RPM). Stock muffler seems to work well, mounted with pitts mount, see photos in my Funtana. I opened up cowl, get good airflow for those hot days [8D]. I really like this set up in my Funtana, 9.5lb plane, hovered under 1/2 throttle, would pull out great at 3/4 throttle, at full throttle it was out of sight in about 5 seconds !
