RE: filling a gasser
ORIGINAL: ed42d-RCU On the fuel supply line from the tank clunk to the carb, I've been using a tee connector. I usually put the tee a couple of inches before the carb inlet and use a fuel dot to the side of the cowl.
If you use a tee and the filling tube is two or so inches long (to clear the cowl) do you not get a air bubble or something going to the carb?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi I have an inverted 125 and was using an on board glow system but the back fires on start up were so bad and often that I start using a normal glow driver which has helped tremendously (but I still dare not prime it or flip the prop before applying the starter). Has any one else found an on board glow (with current sensing) to be problematic with an inverted motor ? Is there anything else one can do prevent/minimise backfires on start up ? Thanks Tim
The on board glow is not stricly needed - it just allows the motor idle slower. I will look at tank height also my fuel line makes a slight loop below the carb ,not above, maybe lifting it will help. BTW the motor has about a gallon through it - I have leaned the low end till it wants to back fire on throttle up so I dont think that I am too rich on the low end. Apart from the back fires I much prefere the 4 stroke to 2 strokes ! Thanks Tim

RE: LightFlite Bug
I got them from my LHS - I think getting good/known brands and light weight (due mainly to battery capacity) is the best approach.

I use Zippy 500mAh and polyquest 800mAh cells (2 cells) - I can feel the difference in weight between the 500 and 800mAh cells on the plane. I think the smaller ones are better for inside - I normally fly in the early evening, I start with the 800mAh and if/when the breeze has died I use the smaller batts.

Silver solder will most definitely hold up to exhaust heat. Just don't use a special low temp silver solder Sta Brite makes one.

Question about Hyperion balancer
Hi I have a Hyperion balancer - in off line mode it discharges cells to achieve balance. Does it do the same while charging via the balancer - if so that means that the mAh displayed on the charger is not the same as was taken by the pack ? thanks Tim

RE: LightFlite Bug
Hi darticus If I may suggest something - you will notice that as the plane rolls the plane will lose height as you are inverted (affected by plane design, speed, center of gravity etc), to counter this we give down elevator when inverted to maintain height. As the roll is a fairly fast maneuver timing is the key to "pulsing" the elevator as the plane/BUG reaches the inverted position. You must release the down elevator as the plane transitions from the inverted position. The BUG exhibits this altitude loss and as you are also starting to do aerobatics, now is a good time to start getting into this habit - it will come into play in many other maneuvers. Also it is very good to get used to thinking not in terms of up or down for the elevator but in terms of moving the plane towards the wheels or towards the cockpit - this is vital as up or down is relative. If you are inverted you don't want to think "hey I want to go up but the plane is inverted so I must push down" once you are used to down elevator moving the plane towards the wheels this is trivial (well almost:) ) As I mentioned in my previous post most planes roll faster anti-clockwise than clockwise and you can use this initially to get a roll rate you are comfortable with. good luck - just try these things at a good height. Had about 4 flights with some insane high alpha again -had a windless afternoon which is rare for where I live !! Still can't nail knife edging - as I get about perpendicular to the ground the bug flips onto its back!!! By the way I am using a Eflight 300 with a 10x3.8 and that causes it to roll to the left much faster than the right. Tim Nash

Hi I have used some thin walled plumbing joints that come in 90 deg etc and have silver soldered them totogether - have about one hour running so far. The gentleman that gave me the idea has been using it for a long time and the only reported problem is work harding - a long copper exhaust in plane with vibration may/will crack at some stage. I used it to build an in cowl exhaust for a Pacific Aeromodels 120 Tiger Moth and put a washer at the end to provide restriction for back pressure and I am very happy. Tim

RE: LightFlite Bug
Hi This is the other Tim. I flew outside in windy weather and while it took concentration it was worth doing. I found that by using the right amount of power just to keep it stationary and varying the angle of attach I could rise or fall almost vertically. Landings where with almost no forward speed ! When knife edging it would often tuck in and flip into inverted flight, don't know what do about it yet - must still use an elevon/rudder mix to see if it helps. Something else that I have not played with yet on this model is aileron differential, it is at 15%. I inquired about a conventional foamie with BUG construction techniques and lightFlite designer Ron said they have one in the works - that is great news so we will be able to practise 3d with less repairing !!!! RE: LightFlite Bug
Hi Tim You know I actually think that my prop saver on my E-Flight 300 motor works too well. After a few crashes/hard landings the motor pulled out of the magic mount which takes a lot of doing - I would have expected the prop to deflect or come off before the motor pulls out ! The eflight prop saver which comes with the 300 motor works very well and fits snuggly - it uses an O ring. Tim Nash

RE: LightFlite Bug
Hi Reposting here becuase this is the active thread I bought the BUG because I thought it was the most durable foamy and because our current foamies were just to heavy and fast for our indoor venue. When I flew it for the first time last night at our indoor venue I was blown away - by the second flight I was doing circuits at an angle of attack of at least 60 degrees! It also does this inverted with total ease. Dragging the rudder while inverted resulted in a few crashes but with NO damage to the BUG. Hovering is also very easy ! I (and the spectators) could not believe the high alpha !!!! I kept it light like Ron suggested and with slow flying managed flight times in excess of 10 minutes on a 500 mAh 2 cell lipo. A great plane with very innovative design features - the most indoor fun I have ever had period !!! As well as being GREAT GREAT GREAT fun indoors - it is superb for learning to hover or fly inverted etc etc. I am not affiliated to LightFlite in any way, just very very happy with my bug.

You know - one crash actually pulled the motor out of the magic mount and the cinch bolt was TIGHT. That takes some force - that itdid not damage the bug was amazing ! Eventually one will surely hit the Cf at an angle and velocity that will snap it but after the knocks I gave it, it wont happen easily !!! regards Tim

Thanks all flipstart - I replaced all coplers and clevises - they were all 2mm Metric stuff, the quality was fine but 2mm Metric in brass is not a good choice for this sort of thing. The build quality of this arf is very good except that the covering is , like you said "Wall paper". Thanks Tim

RE: Pacific Aero 120 Tiger Moth - Build Ques
Hi Sean I dont know when yours was made - mine was manufactured in Dec 2005- I think they may have addressd the cowl issue as the fibglass is slightly flexable with very thin gel coat so it should be ok. The cables used for the pull-pull and flying wires seems ok but I dont like the 2mm metric clevis attachments (I am from a metric countryand think metric is great) BUT 2mm has a very fine pitch for this sort of thing !! I showed it to two of the most experienced guys in my club and they said they would use as is - so I will give it some thought !! How long does it take to assemble at the field? tim
