RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
Very sad news Gary.. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Gary, Ive been in touch with Mitch at Down & Locked about using your method for your sliding canopy system on the Comp Arf Corsair you showed me at Toledo in April when I meet you. I'm building a Ziroli Corsair and would like to communite with you about a number of details about that system when you are ready to be back at things. Could you PM me when such a time is Ok with you. Again my condolences, Bob Masterson email: bokee@consolidated.net

Need help with hold down keepers for neumatic air lines
All: I'm routing pneumatic air lines within my GS Corsair. I have seen some kind of clips which snap on to air lines to help routing within the fuse and wing structures. Don't know what they are called or where to get them. I once saw them used on an EDF jet. Thanks for your help. BobM

Need help balancing my Funtana
All: Recently I purchased a used Funtana from a lhs. The Funtana has a ws of 72" It has an Zenoh G26 up front. The on-line manual says to CG balance it at 6 3/8 to 6 3/4" from the leading edge at the fus. When done at this distance, it is extremely nose heavy. One of my questions, as this my first gas powered plane. Can I locate the ignition battery way back in the fus without creating noise issues with the receiver/servos? I will be using a JR 9303 2.4 receiver. Also does anyone know if there have been any rev's to the CG point?

RE: Corsair scale guysneed your help!
Lex: Again, thanks for your informed reply. I have another question. Here it is: I am building a Zorili GS Corsair 93" WS, etc. On the full scale bird, the right wing had a spoiler added after early manufacturing, around 42 or 43 to the -1A and all subsequent builds. This spoiler was added to assist in eliminating left wing tip stalling on landing. I have put my guess as to size of this on my build. I saw a full scale -1D at Oshkosh a couple years ago and was about 6" in width( works out to be about 1 1/4 " on model). My problem is the piece I built seems way to large depth wise. I guessed it was about 3" deep full scale at the wing leading edge, which translated to around 1/2" on the build. Just looks way to big. Question does anyone know the depth on that thing as measured from the leading edge of a full scale -1A so I can scale this thing more close to what it should be. I guessed it was 3" deep, which scaled out to 1/2". Much thanks for your help Read more: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3109744/mpage_287/key_/tm.htm#ixzz0t7k51h2D

RE: Corsair scale guysneed your help!
Lex: WoW: Your web site is inspiring. I'm of the WWII era; growing up a few miles from Willow Run bomber plant in MI; seeing those planes fly over our farm starting at daylight 24/7 so low you could almost touch them. But Corsairs are my modeling passion. Thanks for your info. I think I will go with 1/4" spacing on those flat rivets, seems close to scale.

Corsair scale guysneed your help!
Hi guys: My question is: what is the distance between rivets on a full size Corsair. I had started out to use 2 1/2 inches and scaled that to one-half inch for my 1/5 scale Ziroli Corsair. They look to far apart. At an air show yesterday, I saw a couple WWII era planes and their rivets were 1 1/4 " apart, which would scale down to 1/4" for my ZCorsair. Help, Thanks, BobM

RE: Saito Twin Cylinder Temperature Variation
ckelloggjr: Saito's take quite a while to fully break-in at least a gallon of fuel. Also I use only YS 20/20 fuel it does make a difference, especially with idle. I have the exact engine and it took at least a gallon before I was ready to put it in the plane. It idles like a champ you will love this thing. After a gallon, check the valve clearance, I had to adjust mine after the first gallon. Also check the compression, which will tell you how far along you are with full break-in. Good luck, BobM

RE: Need help correcting a building error
Thanks guys: I'm not going to fight it. I will set the correct dihedral and fill the gap with epoxy at time of assembly. I will likely epoxy 3 or 4 oz glass over the joint prior to fiberglassing the wing. Thanks for your inspiration. BobM

Need help correcting a building error
I'm in the proces of building a Ziroli GS Corsair. As you all may know the gull wing is often a challange to build right and true. I find myself with an error in the accuracy of one of my wing rib's allingment to achieve the proper wing dihedral. As a result I have a gap of 1/8 inch on the bottom of the joint where the one outer wing panel joins the gull wing center section. This occured because one rib was not true vertical to the building board during construction frame up. Thus when I went to mate the outer wing section to the center section, I had a far to small dihedral. After filing and fitting, I can get the correct dihedral, but I end up with a big gap on the bottom of the joint. The gap is pie shaped, if you will, so I'm looking to build up the gap with material prior to final joining of the two wing sections. I'm quite concerned about joint strength at this critical location of the wing. I am now ready to either mix up some epoxy resin and micro-balloons , iron on Monocote to one rib, spray mold release on it and then pour in the above mixture into the joint and let set, then break alway. The other idea is to use exopy resin and a saw dust mixture and do the same thing--the thought being that that combo would be stronger? I do not want to wait until it is time for final wing assembly and do something. I would like to get it fixed now. Need your expert help and advise. PS: I thought I was a very careful builder, lots of experience, but this one got away from me at a very bad location and you cannot hide the wrong dihedral. Thanks, BobM

I'm having a great day--question and answer story
Greetings: I hope I do not affend anyone here with this little story, but I believe we do not hear enough good things in our hobby that I thought you all might find the Q and A interesting. Here we go: Below is a letter i sent to Horizon Hobby/Jr regarding a servise issue with a number of their servo's. The answer is at the end. " Tuesday, September 18, 2007 Horizon Service Center Attention: JR Service 4105 Fieldstone Road Champaign, IL 61822 Subject: Enclosed are JR servos for service. Gentlemen: 1. I have had a Flight pack of Digital JR 811 servo’s for some time now which I purchased along with a JR receiver and battery. Each time I try and use these servo’s in an aircraft, I get a lot of chatter from each of these units. It has been to the point, that I must always remove them from an installation and replace these 811 units with another servo to have a proper functioning installation. These servo’s have never flown in any aircraft. I am returning these units as I cannot use them with any degree of reliability. The chatter has occurred on several different aircraft installations, and has always been remediated by another servo replacing the 811’s. The last attempt to use 2 of these 811’s was in a wing Flap configuration with total lead length of about 24 inch’s. Please consider my request for some form of replacement units (analog standard servo’s). I do not need five replacement servo’s per sa. Some analog servos in the 50 oz-in range would be fine. Please let me know what kind of replacement allowance you can arrange. 2. I have again, a new JR 531 analog servo, which I purchased several of for an aircraft installation. The servo which I have enclosed seems to be faulty;( the other units work fine)—I get a lot of chatter. I have tried RF line chocks, isolating buffer amplifier, etc and cannot get this servo to stop chattering. When I press on the control surface it deflects with very little force. This servo has never flown in an aircraft. The application of this servo was in a wing aileron with total lead length of 30 inch’s. The other 531 also is a wing aileron with a similar lead length of 30 inch’s and it is fine. Please review it’s operation and advise. A similar analog servo of the 50 oz-in range is what I need. Thank you for you review and support. I do not use anything but JR radios and servos. I can be reached at " Here is the answer: Today I received via FEX-EX a package from the above. In it were 6 NIB JR servo's, Model 4131 premium servos, 90 oz-in torque. Cost: 0.00! The discounted price on the Horizon web site is: $79.99 ea--almost a $480 value. I was speechless. I called Horizon and asked to speak with a representative who I said how much I though of the JR Customer service, how I'm a customer for life. I've had a great day. I hope everyone has a great day. Go enjoy this wonderful hobby. BobM

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Anyone: I am building a GS Corsair and am into the wing construction to the point where I am wanting to mount the Robart 150 rotating retracts. I will be having gear and strut doors and trying to make them scale as far as travel. My 3 view show the inboard door to not open as far as the outboard. So my question is: Which way should the gear rotate when being retracted. It appears there is a right and left gear leg, but I'm not sure which way the gear should rotate. Any help would be great. I picture also would help. Great thread by the way. Thanks, Bob Masterson

RE: Jack Stafford Comanche
Jerry: Hi: This is Bob Masterson responding. I can answer some of your issues. I have built an original Jack Stafford Comanche 250. The kit/plane is 39 or 40 years young. It is currently awaiting it's new maiden flight. I completely rebuilt the plane, with fiberglass, EZAM thinned epoxy finish; automotive base coat, clear coat paint with the original markings and paint scheme from the original Stafford model. It is powered with a Saito 90 twin, 12X8 3blade prop. It is decked out with landing, nav, and rotating beacon lights; flaps(one servo per flop; aileron servo for each side; on board glow system. The landing gear is fixed however, as the space for any nose gear seems very tight. As for the gear rotation, I would try and get 85degree rotation. There is a 5 degree dihedral. Also, I detailed the plane with scale panel lines, over 14000 raised rivets. The over all weight is in at 11.5 # it is heavy yes. It had been banged up real bad by someone trying to help me and as you know, when you rebuild, things have a way of getting heaver. Also as I'm using 4 servos in the wing, that has added weight, as well as the lighting system and on board glow driver. I put the latter in, because on some concern for a need with the flat Saito twin. I did not attempt the flying tail. I will attempt to attach a couple of photo's I have. Good luck, BobM

P47flyer : Dave: Thanks for your response. That is very good information. I will strongly reevaluate my current 32 oz tank configuration for a larger tank and look at the bellcrank configuration opportunity. I'm expecting the ZCorsair to come in around 32-34lb. RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
RCPILOT78 Hello and what a great looking Corsair. I am also building a GS Corsair; a Ziroli and have a Saito 450 radial also. I have some questions: The Saito instruction manual states that the engine has a fuel burn rate of 2oz/minute at full throttle. If this is so or close, why and HOW did you pick/get a 50 oz tank (s) in the TF Corsair? I am in the mid point of my ZCorsair build and had planned to use a 32oz tank (1). Any further guidance would be helpful. I always try and fit the largest tank I can fit, but with my throttle linkage needing to be where it is, It limited my space, thus the 32oz tank. Did you mount your throttle servo up front for more space or use dual tanks? PS I also have a Saito 170 radial, in a CMP 76inch WS Corsair, with a 24oz tank--and it seems to be enough for 10-12 minute flights. It's fuel burn rate per Saito is 1.5oz/min. Thanks in advance, Bob Mastersonauticom

RE: Saito 170 - Which Onboard Glow? Cline?
fheppenheimer: I have a Saito 170R in a Corsair; use the McDanial pulsed glow driver. As some have said, it uses a 4.8 volt battery( I think around 3000mah) for its power. I have connected mine to the throttle, that way I am able to start my engine without external connections as well. I would caution you that I had a lot of RFI problems during my first attempts at using this setup. After many experiments, I finally got it right. Put the receiver as far away from the glow driver and servo wires as possible, carefully routed the servo wires to the rec. and kept the rec. antenna away from every thing. I also used JT RF chokes in the long servo leads. I like the pulsed driver because it gives longer use time between charging--3-4 flights before charging. As to weight, my SonicTronics is actually lighter then another glow driver I have, from RAM--it uses 1.2 V battery. As to the Kline regulator. I once asked the Saito people about using one and they very much discouraged me from that thought process. I have never had an issue with the Saito 170R--it is the best engine I have ever had in a RC plane. Just be sure you take your time and bench run it in--I used about 3 gal of fuel , and what a difference between 2 and 3 gal. 9500rpm with a 16x8 prop
