RE: Spektrum 2.4Ghz DSM2 VS Futaba 2.4Ghz FAST Different questions
ORIGINAL: aatiger Hello All, I,m using the JR 9303 2.4, before that was the Royal EVO 12, thinking of getting a 2.4 12 ch system, has anyone had experience with 10 or more high torque servos setup like the Hitec 5945 or 8611a in JR or Futaba system without having a power box. My concern is the high Amp draw from the servos through the receiver, and which receiver can operate in a low Voltage environment in the event of a bad servo or other reasons. Thanks Allan
You won't have a problem with any of the receivers running large numbers of amp hungry servos, Spektrum/JR publlshes that their receivers will handle 25 or 35 amps (I forget which, it's been a while since I researched this stuff), and Futaba should be the same, since they both use a similar power bus to connect the input positive/negative pins to the servos. The bigger concern is the power handling of the power inputs, since a servo connector is limited to the 3amp range. This is where JR/Spektrum are very nice with the AR9100 and AR7100, they have large gauge power inputs with EC3 connectors that are capable of passing more than enough current into the receiver. I'm not saying you'll have an issue with a Futaba running a large number of servos (I've run up to 9 large servos on Futaba 149DP receivers without issue), but the power handling of the AR9100 and AR7100 is impressive. Just to add to the original topic of this post, I've flown the JR/Spektrum system since the DX7 came out, and them moved to the X9303, flying everything from giant scale composites to large and small helis and park fliers. Absolutely flawless in every regard out to the limits of sight. A couple months ago I switched to a Futaba 10C FASST because I don't like the JR programming. Flying the same things, there is no difference in performance or range. They both work great, pick the system you want based on the features of the transmitter and receiver, both links are solid.

I just checked mine, and it is fine. Is there a chance that this is related to a particular production run of the transmitter? Mine came from the first shipment.
Don't you just love a club that stands as one? Man how I hate club politics. My favorite saying, "Tell me what rules are and I'll be happy to play by them but you got to tell me what the rules are first." I got to say that I feel sorry for EB. The guy is trying to do his best with, what looks like, no club support.
[8|] There's plenty of club support, and there was a lot more of it before Clean decided to go on a rampage and bash the club and it started to come to the attention of the club. If anything guarantees that Spadfest won't be invited back, it's Clean's rants.

RE: 2008 SPADFEST Website
What I saw was a lot of polite Golf Clapping. But what I said was if there are plans for such an event I would like to know so I can plan my time around it. I've seen it, doesn't really impress me that much, I could make a food run or hit the outhouse or something IF I know ahead of time so I can plan for it. It's a wide, beautiful world but just like the there's no this or that part, I wasn't expecting it. Never assume just because I'm big mouthed enough to actually express a concern that I'm the only one. If it was just a me issue, I would have politely clapped along with everyone else.
Well, you were a guest of our club, and our club asked for a demo to be flown. As a guest, I'd expect that you'd follow the same rules as if you were a guest at someone's home. Shut your mouth, clap your hands, or go to hell. 8 minutes out of 3 days was nothing, and your coming on here to complain publicly about the host club because we had the "audacity" to fly an 8 minute demo to show some other aspect of the hobby is rude, and uncalled for. You make it sound as if hours were taken away from you, when the reality is it was 8 minutes, you'd spend more time waiting for a frequency to become available, or for someone to land so you could fly. Don't make it sound like a huge imposition. There's plenty of places out there that you can go to and throw a piece of coroplast into the air, don't go somewhere that has shut down the club for 95% of the paying membership for the express purpose of hosting you, and complain about an 8 minute demo and rules that are in place to ensure the continued success of the club. It's no different than if I came into your house, and complained about the beer in your fridge. You'd tell me to go to hell and kick me out, and be justified for doing so.

RE: 2008 SPADFEST Website
Oh and Kodak, if you want to see them 1/3scale balsa planes, they have events for those listed all through any of the modeling magazines. Fact is, those and the incessant almost incestual coverage of park flyers litters the magazines anymore. It shouldn't be too hard to find an event nearby that has them. Now, I love seeing the SPAD versions and that's what I'm going to this event for.
Clean Spadfest had exclusive use of the club field for 3 days last year, and everyone was happy to have the event. The demo flight that you are complaining about took 8 minutes, and was REQUESTED by the CD last year. There are more viewpoints than just yours, and you are attacking those who clearly enjoyed the 8 minute demo that took place. Don't attack those who did enjoy it, it was a way to break up the day and show another aspect of the hobby. Judging by the reaction of the crowd, you are firmly in the minority on the subject of the demo flight.

RE: GP Cap 580 1/3 scale
I think you'll like the characteristics of the 580. It slows right down, tracks very well, and does the cleanest snaps you'll ever see. I loved how mine flew, I just wasn't a fan of how the wings broke.

RE: GP Cap 580 1/3 scale
Great config, but don't use Miracle switches, they don't have the amp capacity to drop a Lithium down and power that servo load. Use something like an MPI HD regulator, they are close in price, and have plenty of load ability.

RE: 9303 4 servo wing programming
That's really too bad, the DX7 had the mixes transfer in last 2 programmable mixes. It's a shame they didn't do that in the X9303. Well, I guess I'm being forced to buy a 12x now.

RE: 9303 4 servo wing programming
You're absolutely right, I just pulled out my X9303 and trimmed while watching the monitor screen, and sure enough the inboard servos on the wing do not move with the outboards. That's ridiculous, why in the world would JR put out a transmitter that doesn't transfer trim to slaved channels? I should have kept my 9z and just bought a module.

I've got dual 1500 4 cells (actually, the packs out of the X9303 and DX7) hooked up with 2 switches in an X-Cell Pro2k helicopter. Works great.

Yes, I've been running dual AR7000s since the DX7 was released in a 100cc composite Edge, and have recently switched to dual AR9000s without incident. I have a friend who is also running dual 9chs as well. We are both using the X9303, but it'd be the same for any of the radios or modules.

RE: 9303 4 servo wing programming
Well, I got it all set up today, I turned off Flaperon, and slaved Gear to Ail, and Aux3 to Flap, and then made used Mix 6 to link those. In all, it works very well, and the channels get relabeled in the radio to LAIL, LFLP, RAIL, RFLP which makes sense. I just thought that there was a canned mix built in to do it, but making one myself wasn't difficult.

9303 4 servo wing programming
Maybe someone can help, how do I program a 4 servo wing into the X9303? I have the Hangar 9 35% 260, and it uses 2 servos per aileron, I've been using matchboxes, but have now changed to the 9ch receiver and want to do it in the radio. What I've come up against is there doesn't seem to be any way to use the Flaperon mixing, so I have to choose normal wing type, then slave gear to aileron, and Aux 3 to flap, and then make a mix in the regular transmitter programming to link it all together. Is that correct? Doing it that way works, but isn't nearly as nice as having the flaperon mix turned on, and just slaving the channels in the device select screen, but it won't let me do that!

RE: So would you trust a $10,000 plane to a DX7?
It does definitely sound like a physical problem in the transmitter in your case. I'd say that's no reason to avoid Spektrum wholesale, you can come across a defective transmitter with any brand or technology.

RE: So would you trust a $10,000 plane to a DX7?
I'd much rather have a system that can't get shot down by someone accidentally turning on a transmitter, is immune to noise from the systems on the plane, and will insure that the wrong model isn't selected, in exchange for simply properly setting up my equipment. If you are someone who can't set up their stuff correctly, then you are certainly better off with FM, since a 2.4 will only guard you from other people's carelessness, while an FM will protect you from yourself.
ORIGINAL: BillS FM systems are far more robust with respect to low voltage and don't shut down in the event of a momentary low voltage spike. Bill
RE: So would you trust a $10,000 plane to a DX7?
I have a friend who trusts an $11k dollar plane to it, so yeah, $10k is no problem. I've got it in a $5k plane, a $4k plane, and a $3k helicopter so if you add them up, I'm over that amount. :D The key is to set it up right, just like anything else. The people who are having problems aren't addressing the power needs of the system. Another thing you can do (that I always do) is test the receivers out for a few flights in something cheap, like a trainer to be sure of their reliability.

RE: Balance woes - Edge 540
You're putting too much thought into it. Throw away the balance machine, and pick it up by the wingtube. If it is not dropping towards the tail, but is balancing, or moving forward, fly it. If it feels nose heavy, then shift it back, etc. There's nothing inherent that makes an Edge do that, I think it's just the way you are measuring the CG.

Want a template for your 106? Unbolt the mount plate from the back of your motor, hold it to the firewall and drill. No one needs to provide one, you have one by virtue of the fact that you have the engine.

I don't have any on mine, and there isn't any on the one that's currently on my bench either. If I did have some, I'd probably hit it with denatured alcohol.

RE: H-9 Extra 260
I"ve got about 20 flights on mine now, and have flown it hard. It's not coming apart in the air, that's for sure. I've done plenty of hard snaps, walls, lomeczvacs, blenders etc, and the airframe has taken it all without issue. The only issue I've had is one of the red stripes on the top of the wings peeled up in flight and made a neat little whistle noise, but landing and running an iron over it solved the problem. On the pilot, I've now built 2 of these, (mine and my friend's that's sitting on my bench now, he doesn't have room to put it together unless he's in the garage, and AC makes life more pleasant) and on both of them the fiberglass was too long to let the wood touch the canopy floor. The simple solution is to sand down the fiberglass until the wood is the low point, and then you'll have a nice solid surface to glue from.
