RE: removing and recovering old models
I have always had very good results just lifting a corner of the covering and peeling it from the model. The dope bond with the wood has always allowed me to peel the covering off. I am recovering a DeBolt Rebel right now and it will get recovered with silk and dope. Will post some pictures tomorrow when I strip the silk off of a DeBold Champ that is also getting re-covered.

Are you guys planning on using a TeeDee .010? I would think an .049 model would be a good choice.
ORIGINAL: spaceworm Sorry I can't help with the prop driver. However, my first big U-CONTROL back in 1953 was a Sterling profile P-51 with coupled flaps and a brand new K&B .29 Greenhead engine.[[:)] I still have the engine[:D]. Good luck with yours.
We have to be about the same age. My P-51 got rebuilt so many times there probably wasn't much of the original balsa left. I couldn't afford the .29 so all of my flying was done with my .19 Green Head. Really wore that one out. My best friend flew a Ringmaster with a Fox .19. Many great memories balancing our planes and everything on our Bicycles while heading to the park on Saturday morning (after Sky King of course).

RE: PROP-JET BINGE
Hi CP, been a while since we chatted. The plane looks real nice but I think the basic problem is the wing needs to be 2" to 3" farther forward. Look at this calculator to get a feel for where the wing would be happy. http://www.geistware.com/rcmodeling/cg_super_calc.htm I think your problem is two fold. 1) way too much side area in front of the aerodynamic center which will make it unstable in yaw; and 2) because of the resulting CG so far back on the fuselage it is probably nose heavy. My guess is if the wing were moved forward several inches you would start seeing some nice flying characteristics.

Nontest09 - Sky Terrier XIV Build
The only thing that has been chosen is the name "Sky Terrier XIV" Well, I have three engines that I will select from. They pretty well cover the complete spectrum; On the high end I have a piped Webra Speedy 2.0 cc; On the bottom end I have an old but still in its prime OS Max III .15 (black cylinder); and last but not least a virgin Cox Tee Dee .09. Oh to listen to the Webra come up on the pipe, it really sings and would need a design something along the lines of what Piggy would design. I don't think my reflexes are what they used to be so maybe one of the other choices might be a better. The OS would be very happy in 50's era silk and stick rudder only with my Babcock escapement. It currently is on a DeBolt Rebel. Most any thing would go with the Tee Dee .09. I guess to be really nostalgic I could put my 1958 McCoy .098 on something. I will have this narrowed down shortly. Some how I think it is going to be built with a bunch of sticks and have the sun shining through a doped silk finish and will more than likely have an escapement. ___________________________________________ Edited to make thread title conform to the only rule that is important :D TheManagement

Paid through the nose for it but I had been looking for one for years and when it surfaced I couldn't help myself. I was on a binge to get all of the major models from my youth. Got the Sabre, a Cox Li'l Stinker, Sterling P-51 C/L, Sterling P-40 C/L, Sterling Tri Pacer and a Top Flite Flight Streak. Got them all plus a K&B Green Head 19 and McCoy .098 that I used on the control lines. Life is good.

RE: Webra Speed .12?
I had two Speedy 2cc (.12 cu.in.) engines for a ducted fan YF-22 project. As usual, I didn't get the project finished but I did do some bench running on the engine with a Macs tuned pipe and ducted fan. BOY that engine sure sounded beautiful when it came up on the pipe. Still have one of the engines and the nearly finished plug for a mold. Hopefully I will be able to find some time this year to work on it.

RE: POOR OUTLAW!
ORIGINAL: combatpigg That's good advice, Steve. After reading your post I'm wondering if the balsa fillets will survive seperation or want to become one with the mold? Looking back on how I did things in the past, the fillets were made from hardwood and I used bondo exclusively for touch ups on the wood work.
If you remember back to my original build thread for the Sky Terrier my plug was coverall covered balsa and finished with clear dope and a final finish of black lacquer. The plug gave up its life for the greater good of the mold (I stuck it). Since the final finish was lacquer, copious amounts of lacquer thinner finally cleaned up the mold so well you couldn't tell there were any problems. Just don't use anything harder than balsa wood wedges to split the plug from the mold. As long as your final finish is lacquer, lacquer thinner is your friend here. After your plug is ready to make the mold from spend two to three days applying coats of Johnson Paste Wax and buffing it out. I usually go with four to six coats each day for three days. Johnson's Paste Wax is the only parting agent I use. It is pure Carnuba wax and works great. When making molds I don't use polyvinyl alcohol but I do use it when making parts up in one of my molds. I only use West Systems epoxy with their fast hardener, Can't comment on anything other West Systems. Also mix in either red or black pigment into the first coat of epoxy on the plug. Lets you see that you have good coverage and gives a good surface for your mold. You can get all of your epoxy, fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc. from either Wicks Aircraft http://www.wicksaircraft.com or Aircraft Spruce http://www.aircraftspruce.com

RE: POOR OUTLAW!
Piggy, Find your nearest Woodcraft store and give them a call. They carry tools for wood carvers and will be able to tell you which lumber yards carry Bass wood. If you can find the right specialty lumber yard you will be able to buy bass wood in any size planks you want. It is by far one of the best woods to use for carving plugs. It is what wood carvers use for all of their fine detail carving. In years past ,when controlline speed was popular, bass wood was the wood of choice for the top halves of the fuselages. I will try to get a picture of my F-22 Rapter plug posted later today. I will be vacuum bagging your Sky Terrier fuselage later this week. Will do a build thread on it. If you really get into this, stop by your Woodcraft store and buy a set of Swiss Made wood carving tools. One of the best things I did was to take a wood carving night class at our local high school.

RE: TWIN FEVER !!!
Piggy, I just went through my super secret stash of wide blade Cox gray props and I have three 7"x 3.5", two 6"x 3" and one 5.5"x 4". You can't have the 5.5x4. I am going to make up a mold from it so I can make new carbon fiber clones; as I don't think there are going to be any more of the wide blade Cox gray props made. You are welcome to the 7x3.5 and/or the 6x3. Could even work out an arrangement to make up a mold from your model after you get it flying like you want. That plane cries to be molded in black carbon fiber with just a clear epoxy finish. You will be able to see what my CF fuselages look like in a couple of weeks. Since I don't have it done yet I guess I will let the cat out of the bag. Will be sending you one of my Sky Terrier fuselages to play around with. Go to the field with a couple fuselages and two of four sets of pluggable wing panels and you are ready for a day of hard combat. each wing panel has its own miniature servo and self contained linkage so replacing one or two panels is really only a couple minute process. If something gets smashed just pull another arrow from the quiver and hit the skies again. These are supposed to be with the extended prop driver/crankshaft and will be natural aluminum case and head. Check back with them in a couple of weeks to see if this is really happening. I am not going to be doing anything model related this summer other than finishing up a carbon fiber surprise for Piggy. I am putting all of my time into getting my 100% RV-7A into the air this Spring. Sure hope some of you guys jump on this and figure out what needs to be done to make these engines live up to their potential. Aggressive attack with a Dremel? touch up the ports/timing?. A double ball bearing .05 with a carb and ABC construction should at least be a good starting point.
