RE: Tank newbie looking for help/recomendations
Thanks Panther G. I have looked through the forums but still wasn't sure about some things. Still not sure if the Panther at Raidentech is the Panther G or not. They have the $70 models that I know are not new, but not sure if the S&S model is necessarily the G.

Sorry to interrupt, but any feedback on the possible tank choices listed a few posts up? Anyway, my son and I have narrowed it down to the Pershing Snow Leopard, M41A3Bulldog and German Panther (Not sure if this is Panther G that everybody talks about). Of these three, any recommended over the others? The tracks and wheels/suspension look different on the Panther than the other two. Otherwise, I think their features are all about the same (speed, turret functions, airsoft etc) Thanks

RE: Tank newbie looking for help/recomendations
I have plenty of extra NIMH batteries...old GP3300's that will work just fine, so the upgraded battery is not a concern as long as the tank has S&S and hopefully the metal motor. (I don't understand what they mean about plastic motor...how can a motor be plastic? Do they mean plastic gears?) Anyway, my son and I have narrowed it down to the Pershing Snow Leopard, M41A3Bulldog and German Panther (Not sure if this is Panther G that everybody talks about). RE: Tank newbie looking for help/recomendations
Hi everybody. I am not new to RC (have nitro and electric trucks, build my own NIMH and A123 batteries) but I am new to tanks. I am looking for a tank for my 6 year old son. From what I can see, HL tanks seem to be the way to go. Basically he needs a tank for inside/outside, going over "stuff", playing in the woods on paths...nothing outrageous. No need for interactive battles. A gun that shoots would be nice to have. Reliability is high on the list. Don't want to be replacing/fixing something every two minutes. I have searched this thread and still have a few questions. 1. Are there any tanks that are recommended over others? Any to avoid? 2. Who has the best prices including shipping to USA? I have searched Raidentech and Matomart and RC Command. So far the only one who I see offering the newer 10 speed models is Matomart, but the shipping is outrageous. Somebody had posted that Raidentech had a second page with the newer updated tanks, but I can't find it. All the ones I see are only 2 speeds forward and 2 reverse. Thanks Nik

RE: What is the fastest Traxxas Stampede motor as upgrade?
I am looking to go brushless myself, and I was surprised how much prices have come down on a fairly decent system. Several good reviews of the EZRUN systems by Hobbywing, and they are cheap. You can find them in several places for $100 for the whole system (motor/esc/program card). Comes with 80A ESC and 36mmx74mm motor. ESC is said to be very under-rated, and I have read in three different forums about people taking them apart and being very impressed by the components and soldering. Some cheap Chinese products are crap, but these are apparently very good. Some have compared them to Mamba systems. As far as batteries, lipo is ridiculously cheap these days. Zippy, Rhino, Turnigy, Flightmax brand from HobbyKing are rated high and are very inexpensive. They also carry several cheap chargers that will do lipo just fine. (Accucel-6 for $40) If you want a safer option, you could go with LifePo (A123) batts. Pre-made packs are a bit expensive, but I have been making my own out of DeWalt tool battery packs. Cells are odd sized with lower voltage than lipo, but amp output is tremendous. They can be charged at high rates (up to 10-15C I've heard) and don't need to be babied at all. Real durable cells. Why spend $70-$150 on a brushed ESC/motor when you can get the efficiency, power and low maintenance of brushless for the same money? Why spend $30-60 for NIMH when you can get Lipo or A123 for a similar price or less? WAY more power potential, much lighter, and A123 are probably as safe or safer than NIMH with no babysitting. Just balance charge and enjoy.

RE: Soldering TRX connectors
I'd be careful about using that kind of flux. I was warned not to use any of the plumbing type flux on electrical connections because it contains acids that are bad for electrical connections. Instead, try to get some rosin flux. It is also very cheap. I think I got mine from a hobby store off eBay for $5-$6 including the shipping. It is a small plastic container of paste flux that will probably last me a lifetime. You only use a very small amount. I have soldered these connectors using it, and I agree about not getting the solder too far up. Treat these much like a Deans connector (you only solder to a very small part of the metal)

Agreed. I like the curves as much as the next guy, but there are plenty of other web pages for that. This does not mean that I am against using one of the lovely females instead of that kid. Sorry, but I hope he is a marketing person's son because if they intentionally used him otherwise it was not a good move. King Some of the foreign market SC's come only with a car charger and not a wall charger. I don't know if that makes any difference to you, but thought I might give you a heads up.

you made perfect sense before, but the manual confirms what I thought you were saying. I'm not sure if it is off. I'll have to check that. Does it make that much difference? I'm still thinking it might be the firewall/motor gearcase because when I epoxied everything back together I think I left a bit of a thickness on top of the firewall on one side. Maybe this threw the alignment off just enough to make a difference. A slight angular difference at the front of the plane means a large physical difference at the back, if you know what I mean.

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
To all those who replied to my trim issue it is not a matter of the length of the rod. It is the issue that after trimming the plane relatively straight in the air and then landing, the rudder is not lined up with the vertical stab. I was not able to get a real accurate feel for anything the day I flew because there was a bit of wind, but I know it is off some. Didn't notice if applying power made it pull one way or the other, so i will pay attention to that next time. "Apply a bit of pressure" to get the thrust line correct does that mean push in on the front and smoosh the foam opposite the way the crash may have pushed it? I was thinking about adding a few small washers to the mounting screws for that side of the gearbox in order to correct the line. I don't think my plane wants more pressure at this point[:'(]

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
I think the drinking thing was misinterpreted. The drinking problem I have is that I have no time for it (drinking), which is the same problem I have with RC (no time). I do manage to go fly or run trucks more often than I drink, so my annual alcohol budget is about $30[:o] I did indeed get to fly yesterday at a beautiful soccer field with nice short grass, and all went well. no issues at all. The original location will not be used again as I am now certain that it is filled with interference that caused my crash. I thought the new spot may have had something funky going on, but I think it was just the wind. I noticed the plane was getting tossed around more after switching to a new battery, so I thought that maybe this battery had issues. ( Is it possible for a battery to cause interference?) But I really think the wind just picked up and was knocking the foamy around. The only real problem with the new spot is that it is on the campus of a college where I attend a night class and it is not near my home at all. I'll have to find a local field to try out so I can bring my kids again. I did notice that the plane had to be trimmed more after reassembly. In fact the rudder is trimmed right of center to make the plane fly straight. This means I will have more throw to the left and less to the right. Is that a big deal? Is there any way to correct it so my plane flies straight with the rudder dead center? Can I "bend" or adjust the thrust angle of the motor up front? Maybe throw some thin washers between the firewall and motor assembly on the right side?

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
Just to clarify, the rudder did go into spastic uncontrolled movement to the right. I checked the trim before flying and it was dead on straight. I had the antenna fully out and the plane was only about 100-200 feet away from me. I don't remember if the antenna was parallel to the ground or not. I think I had it slightly tipped. I flew fine my first time out and am positive this was not due to a lack of flight time. The plane simply turned full right rudder and held it despite my input. I am convinced that it was excess interference or a bad rx. I am going to do some extensive ground testing at my next location before flying. I will double check the crystals and connections before flight. If there is any sign of loss of full control, I will be smart and patient and not fly. I intend on checking out several locations. If none of them work out I will call HZ and explain what is going on with a request for a new rx unit. I think that is pretty fair because if the product is defective they should stand behind it. BTW I got her all epoxied up and re-assembled. I gave some good tugs on the propeller/motor and everything seems to be in place just fine. The only thing missing is the cowl, and the LHS is closed until Wed. , so if I actually get the chance to fly tomorrow I will do so without the cowl and see what happens.

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
Thanks Downunder. That's exactly what I was thinking. If it is interference at the other site, then problem is solved by going to a new site. Also, if the fuse is not usable now then another crash won't hurt much. I'm gonna fly it and see what happens. It took a very hard hit, but I am amazed at just how well it seemed to hold up. I think my initial shock lead to a bit of over-reaction in the damage department. The only way to know for sure is to fly it and see. Also, why would anybody crash if there are no interference problems?[:D][:D] Where does most interference come from anyway? How would one go about avoiding it if possible? Does the Corsair come with a decent radio that does not have to worry aobut interference? I'm not there yet at all, but when the time is right (probably 20-30 years from now if my wife has any say) I would like to upgrade to a 4 channel plane that has a decent radio so I don't have to worry about interference and watching others' channels.

I just checked the HZ parts list. I have been calling it the wrong thing. It was the firewall that busted, the thing that the motor and gearbox attach to. You can buy them for a whopping $1.79. Hopefully my LHS will have them and I won't have to pay more in shipping than the part costs.

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
Well, I just got done with the repairs. Packing tape and hot glue seems to have repaired the fuse and the wing. I took epoxy to the mount and we will let that set up for a day or two. I think it should hold just fine. The way I see it, I will try another location and find out what happens. If the fuse or motor mount is trashed now, then additional abuse will not make any difference. If I crash I crash, or if it doesn't fly exactly straight I'll trim it or whatnot. If it is not flyable and I do crash, then surely the components will survive and I will just transfer them at that time. I'm not ready to give up on this cub though. I think many others have had some bad damage and the cub came back fightin' I just hate the idea that I had a brand new plane just a few hours ago, and now it is a wounded and bandaged soldier. I'm a bit anal about keeping new things new and I hate the fact that this damage was beyond my control. Oh well, just gotta learn to roll with it. Can you fly without the cowl? How do you get the spinner off in order to put a new one on? Does HZ sell just the motor mount? It looks like it could just be removed and another one stuck on in its place.

Also, make sure that your time is set perfectly as well, on your transmitter, as well on your plane. I made a big mistake by not checking that on my T-28 Trojan, and nearly nose dived like 10 times. ^^^^^^^What do you mean by make sure your time is set well?^^^^^^^^^^^^ I don't know what the "time" is? Did I miss something I was supposed to do? Yes I had my antenna out, but I think I extended it after I plugged in the battery. I think I turned on the TX, plugged in the battery and then extended the antenna. Should that make any difference really? I may try to put it back together and try to fly in a different spot to see if that solves the problem. Also, i will use those stock AA's in something else around the house and put fresh batts in there instead. Can the plane be flown without the cowl, or is that necessary? (Just in case my lhs doesn't have it) Act was turned off, but could this be intruding somehow?

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread
Well, I flew today for the second tiem and now my SC is trashed pretty good. Anybody remember the other month when I maidened the bird? I was having some crazy rudder issues. There was some intermittent craziness with my SC as the rudder seemed to have a mind of its own. Happened a few times during flight before I noticed it wasn't just the slight wind. Got worse towards the end of my session when the battery was low, but I could still control the plane. Well, I went back to the same place tonight, my local high school, and decided to fly despite a few crazy rudder actions. WRONG CHOICE!! I lined up, took off smooth and about three seconds later, the plane turned hard right and held it. I pushed the stick hard left but it had no effect as I watched the SC go from 30 ft up banked over and hit almost dead on into hard blacktop. I was numb. I couldn't believe it. My kids were there, so I had to hold back my real feelings (which would have included lots of bad words and perhaps profuse crying). I got to the plane and saw the cowl completely smashed, the wing with a chink taked out where the rubber bands attach, the motor mount craked in half and the fuse cracked at the battery compartment. I'm actually surprised the thing is not completely destroyed. I intend on going to the garage to try to fix it right after I post this. Does anybody know how crucial it is to get the motor mount exactly perfect? I think I can get it about back to where it was, but it might be a touch off either left, right, up or down. Also, I can't seem to get the fuse to stay straight even when I hand push the foam back together. Should I be concerned about the batt compartment and fuse being a little misaligned? In a nutshell, will this still fly with battle damage that does not get it back to exact original condition? I'm thinking yes as others have posted how many fixes they've done and it still flies. The worst thing about it is that it wasn't even my doing. I would actually have felt better if I screwed up a landing or something, but this was just so disheartening to watch. It was like I had no control over it. If this was interference, would it not also affect the throttle or elevator? I will try a new spot if I can fix the plane to see if it really was caused by interference or not. Maybe there is just something wrong with my plane. Do you think HZ would help me out if it is defective? I bought the thing about 4 months ago and never even had a chance to fly it until last month. This is only my second flight, so it certainly should still have worked like new. Are thos batteries that come with the kit crap? I still had those in there. If they were low would the TX light just not come on or something, because it beeped and the LED lit up just like always.

RE: 2 or 3 channel plane for very young flyer?
OK. Sounds like some good advice. I just wanted a plane that would react better than the Aero Ace jet. Maybe an Aero Ace Biplane or sportflyer or the mini xpv is the way to go. I think the bip turns the fastest and the single wing sportflyer is somewhere in between the jet and bip. Maybe I'll go back and look at the advice in the Aero Ace thread. I'm still considering the Firebird if the price is right. It would give me another plane and maybe one for my son to start on in a few years. Also, my SC just nosed into a parking lot from 30 feet up. Had nothing to do with me, though. I think either there is something wrong with the radio system or my flight spot has interference. I flew it at the spot a month ago and noticed a bit of erratic rudder behavior, but I was able to fly it OK. Today I was at this same spot and noticed the same thing but decided to fly anyway. Bad choice. I took off, gained about 30 ft when the plane ruddered right and held it despite my left inputs. It smasehd stright to the hard blacktop. More on the story in a post I'm about to leave in the SC thread.

I was actually looking at the older Firebird and Firebird II. A guy is selling some right now on eBay and thought I might be able to get them for cheap and have a decent beginner plane. Is the Firebird and Firebird II the same as the Firebird Phantom essentially? I think the Freedom is a bigger, heavier setup and not good for the beginner, but how about these older versions? Still thinking a slo-v or slow-stick might be the deal to go with, though. Slow-stick looks more upgradable.

By "real" I meant something that has control surfaces and/or is made by a hobby-grade manufacturer. I am quite aware that you don't get lipo/brushless/4-channel 2.4 spektrum for $80. I've actually seen semi-decent stuff go for $100 to lucky bidders on eBay. I have heard good things about the mini XPV, but don't they steer just like the AirHogs? No real control surfaces, just alters the power to either motor. Plus, they have a permanent battery/motor/esc that would be a pain to replace just like the Air hogs. I will consider it as a definite possiblilty if it is much more responsive to control inputs and has a good climb rate. His current Aero Ace jet does not climb all that well. Any other suggestions?

2 or 3 channel plane for very young flyer?
I am thinking about getting my 4-year old son a "real" plane. He has an Air hogs aero ace, and it is nice because it is very durable and goes slow. The problem is it is not very responsive. It is the jet, not the biplane or sportplane. It turns slowly and holds the turn longer than you hold the stick. I myself can fly it well enough because I have the foresight to understand that it will act in a certain way and that I should avoid over-correcting a turn. I think its flight qualities are messing up my son's abilities to fly, though. He is very good with his RC truck because the steering does what he inputs at that moment, but this little plane has delay to its actions and by the time he corrects it the thing is heading ina nother direction. So, I'm looking for a plane that is relatively slow, durable and easy to fly. Looking for new or used price around $80 or less. I have a HZ Super Cub myself and love it, but they are a bit more $$ than I want to spend. Also I think that plane is way too big and fast for him. A simple 2 channel might be best so he only has to worry about turning it and the throttle will take care of altitude. Are the HZ Firebirds any good? I thought they were 2 channel, but it appears they are 3 channel. Any other ideas? I'd love to get a mini-super cub, but they are not even out yet and appear to be $119. A bit too much right now, although I think he would flip if he had a plane just like Daddy.

Itzobi Not an expert, but a hot battery of any kind in a totally stock SC seems strange. I know somebody had tested the stocker and it pulled maybe 10A at full throttle. That is not a whole lot, and any decent battery(NIMH or LIPO) should be able to handle it with ease. Do only your lipos get hot in the SC, or do others heat up as well? If it is only the lipo, I would be careful with those bateries. Have you tried those particular batts in any other applications? Do they heat up? Barlowe I have ordered from DealExtreme several times and never had a problem at all. I got Deans connectors, fans, alligator clips and other various electronic components. Very decent quality for the price for sure. Seems like you are having a string of bad luck in the RC plane game, friend. I hope all works out for you in the end and you get that bird up. Hve you gotten your replacement? Sorry, I've been away from the thread for a while. Can't wait to get back in the air myself, but home projects and other family life has gotten in the way recently. Not such a bad thing, but I would like to get flying again. Maybe I'll just quit my job as that really appears to be the biggest obstacle these days.

twobnvd - I would not go with the maxamps 7 cell batts. I have no experience with them but have heard that they are a bit over-rated and over-priced. Look into Ener-g cells from SPC or SMC or Promatch. IB 4600 cells are also supposed to be decent. Have never heard much anything bad about Elite cells from Cheap Battery Packs either, so maybe give them a try.
