RE: Hangar 9 60cc Corsair
Hi Bill. Perfect, thank you..........I guess that may be an oversight in the manual as this dimension does help with any possible alternative power source. Any chance that you could also let the thread know the diameter of the nose.approx where the cowl fits over??........I have a plan in mind !!! Many thanks again...... Nick (UK).

Hi Bill. Many thanks for that..............gives us someting to work with and think about...[;)] or....[:o] I have looked at the pdf manual and could you or John help with a dimension that I cannot see in the manual...? WHAT IS THE DIMENSION FROM THE FIRE/WALL or ENGINE MOUNTING TO THE PROP DRIVER..? From the photos, looks like the EVO 7cyl uses "stand-offs"...... Thanks again. Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Steve. The mounting is a little tight with the alignment of the bolts and washers, what I did with my mounting points is to make each hole into a "slot",the "slot" being made radially........bit hard to explain, but it works and gives you more room for the cowl to be positioned.Don't be afraid to make the hole a little bigger and hence the slot bigger than the original diameter drilled......this all helps to get the movement on the bolt / washer when fitting the cowl to the fuzz. To make sure that the mounting points are strong,I also added more epoxy to the glued areas of each mounting and in addition cut up some carbon or Ali sheet the same size as the mounting point faces where the washer / bolt tighten up to.........this will ensure that the bolts / washer do not pull-through the slotted face of the mounting ( wood is too soft, hence making a strong carbon or Ali "pad" there. It is still a little tight, but it works and you can also get the washers on,although at first it may appear they don't want to fit on,but it works !!..........that slot as said allows more movement for all the bolts and the cowl........Give it a go. Definately re-glue all the mountings.........slot the mountings first, cut up carbon or ali sheet to match up with the mounting face ( outside face where the bolt tightens up to ),re-glue + glue the additional "plate" onto the mounting.........when all dry drill through the slot in the wood so as to make a hole in the "plate"that was glued on,file to match the slot in the wood .........all done. Hope this helps. Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 60cc Corsair
Hi All. Just to continue the "cowl-size" question..........will it or won't it on the F84 R3 / 450 R3 type radial. The FS cowl is quite large, may be too large for the H9"C",but the fuzz dia on the H9 C is not known as yet..?? The following photos are of the FS Corsair cowl ( as moulded from the T/F Giant Kit version by FS )..........The outside max dia is approx 270mm as seen in the photo. The 450 R3 fits in well, and I would also assume that even the F84 R3 with plug caps may still fit under this cowl with out too many problems........however a major difference if one could use the F84 is possibly the dimension of the f/wall to prop driver distance. Evo 7-77 is 140mm versus the Saito at 170mm on the F84...........quite a big difference !!! ( stand off's used on the 7-77 mounting ??? )........the 450 being 200mm ( massive !! ) I think all will become clearer as Horizon get to pdf the manual on the web-site,then we can all see what will or won't fit in. Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 60cc Corsair
Hi. I think you may have miss-read the posts above.................The evo 7-77 is SMALLER at 223mm dia.........the Saito F84 / R450 is 250mm dia...........not by too much, but enough for all the Saito users to question the fit in the cowl on this H9 Corsair. So come on Horizon put us in the clear..............inside dia of cowl and outside dia of fuzz at cowl mounting point ( somebody at HH must know this !!????........John,HELP !!! )...........unless you can pdf the manual to the site !!! Thanks in advance [;)] Great thread already !!!!! This is soooooooooooo going to be good Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 60cc Corsair
Hi. The FG84R3 has the same dimensions as the FG450R3 as far as the cylinder layout / diameter ( that is 250mm).I have a 450 waiting to go in my T/F Giant Corsair ( when it gets finished !! ).Fibreglass Specialities Corsair cowl may also be an option here to replace the H9 cowl ?..........I know my R450 fits in this cowl from F/S........ I have to say that this H9 Corsair has put the stop on that idea............got to get one of these. If you look at the ZP62 Petrol engine ( also recommended for the 60cc H9 Corsair ) dimensions and scale it up to true size "on your screen"............you should see that from the centre line of the engine to the top of the cylinder head ( not including the spark plug )...........it is approx 125mmm high.Assuming that the engine is mounted on the C/L of the fuzz, also that the cylinder does not hang out of the bottom of the cowl, that would equate to a cowl diameter of 250mm....just about correct for a R450 or R84 ??? ( plugs on the R84 are angled back,so that may help with plug-cap clearence ?) Until we get a definative answer from somebody at H9 ( John, can you get this dimension for the thread ?? ) on the INTERNAL cowl diameter, those of us who would like to use the R84,will have to guess !!! The evo 7-77 has a dia of 223mm..........so pretty close,BUT as said in a post or two back the H9 60cc cowl is a "tad" too small...............hence the need for the correct dimension. I can see evolution not being able to produce enough 7-77's maybe !!! I can see this thread being as good as the H9 P-47 that John started...............come on John, you have to do this one, every body want's you to do it !!! Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi "Ron" I think it is probably a combination of material flexing and fitting...........if you think of the door,no matter if it is flat or "profiled",in an air stream it will act like a wing.........producing lift in one direction or another + plus drag !!! a curved profile probably more so like a wing, flat profile would depend more on the relative air flow over it.........bit like driving you car and holding you hand flat into the wind...change the angle of you hand and it goes up or down. I think it is a question of material strength against speed of airflow.........as Doug says, ali 100% perfect........it has the strength for its shape / weight of the door. ( Full-size limit the speed range with gear and or flaps deployed, the ones that I used to fly...all marked in a white "arc" on the ASI ) For the "stock" set up,I guess it's just making the material stronger in the areas that have caused the "flexing"..........plus don't fly at high speeds with ill fitting or weak doors !!! Good luck with your maiden...........and doors !!! Let us know how she goes.......... Cheers.................Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Doug. OK..............thanks for the "additional info",I have already given this some thought and I think I have come up with a simple solution to using the stock door set up and for the "built-up"doors........now having heard where yours failed.Interesting to know that it bent back and failed around the holes.......... I agree..............the Ali doors are 100% bullet proof !!! Using the stiffners provided ( well, mine were soaked in oil from the factory !!! so they went straight into the bin !!! ).......I think you will run into the "height" problems of getting the door flush with the wing skin on the retract ..........I used some different ply,but only part way down as otherwise the oleo will "bang" into it on a good full compression of the strut....due to the "welded" "lump" that Robart put on the end !!! I will do the mod over the weeked and put some photo's up..............if what I think will work out for guy's using the "stock door",built up or un-built up................ Will be using a bit "coke" can, plastic strip,epoxy............and a bit of luck and one assumes that the gear door doesn't have to come off all the time for any form of maintenance !!! Thanks again Doug. Cheers...............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Doug. Wow......thanks for the info / update........I'm using LADO retracts ( I have the D & L retracts in my T/F SW,and have always used a seperate power supply and HD extensions ),The LADO retracts have HD wire and as usual, they are all connected using the HD extensions and the seperate power supply. I'm pretty sure that there is a "warning" from D & L / Robart with regard to polarity........there was for my SW set up,together with a "caution" about too higher volts on the earlier "control-box",but I had that changed by D & L to the newer version that accepts the Lipo input. On the door issue ( as I and I guess a few more on this thread have not yet flown our birds ),did you guys use a washer under the door bolts and also did you use the "stiffner" in the door construction...?I have "built up main doors and inner doors and I think that these are pretty strong, takes alot to "form" them when finished constructed and with all the extra stringers in the constuction........appear to be good and stiff ??? Hope that mine hold together.........??? Thanks again for the up-date...........Interesting that John R has never spoken or mentioned any possible "gear-door" problems.....mmmmmmmm [:o] Cheers..............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Curt. Trying to see exactly what the fit problem is............I didn't have any problems : When you cut away the wing rib..........can you rotate the wheel in the "well" in the retracted position...? ( don't forget you have to add the "clear-plastic" spacers at the two outermost bolts on the Robart chassis, these will tilt the whole oleo downwards into the well a bit more). My wheels, and I'm using the Robart 8 spoke ali-wheels,rotate in the well in the retracted position. Also ensure that the oleo / whell alignment is not too much toe-in or toe-out..........this will also affect the seating of the wheel on that "rib" you have partly cut-away...... Your length on the oleo to the main door looks about right, looks as if you havn't "drilled the holes as yet to mount the main door...? Also ensure that the oleo is firmly seated in the "retract-pivot block".........Robart only give that end a "quick scuff" to remove the gray primer there....... I'll try to take some photo's of my gear-well etc to show you.........( just about finished the instal on the Stbd wing ). Cheers..............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Doug. Thanks for the info.............I have already reinforced ( additional epoxy etc ) all around the firewall and all along the "crutches" into the fuzz and also the interior frames....where I can get too !!! I'm hoping that the OS is a "sweet runner",using a well balanced blade !!! The cowl is already reinforced with carbon tape around all the mounts, the exhaust is still "in cowl" as per the Evo40. It will be a few more weeks before she is ready for the maiden,so will post the results on this thread........... I'm hoping that my batteries will help with the "required nose weight" as the OS 55 is similar in all -up wt to the Evo40,not too much in it. I will be running with 5 batteries in the nose area, one "heavy" battery right ontop of the "mounting-box" for the engine, this is for the nav and landing lights,( 2 x batts for Rx,I batt for ignition and 1 x batt for the "lado main and T/W retracts ).........so,again hoping that this will be "useful" weight and will only have to add a small amount of "useless" weight !!! Thanks again. Cheers.................Nick (UK).

Hi Alf. Welcome to the build forum for the 47........ Would be very interested to see how your Moki 50VT installation goes..........hope you will post some photos when you can ?? I guess Moki have taken one of the "banks" of the 250 to produce the 50VT.......appears to be quite light and looks to have a slightly larger power output to the Saito FG36,so should be ok.....( liked your T/F S/W video, not sure if you can lighten up the H9 Jug as you did with the SW !!!! ). Keep us up-dated !!! All the best as your build starts........... Cheers.............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi guys. Hope all going well with your builds................just finished the port wing complete !!!! one more to go !!!! I decided in the end with regard to the nav and landing light to operate these on seperate Tx switches ( fast using up all the channels though !!!).........in my previous post showing the landing light set up,I had to swap-out the spektrum servo ( couldn't stop the chatter / buzz at the end points, although this didn't occur all of the time ).........I have now replaced that with the same Align servo that I used on the inner gear door. Cosmetics have now been finished on the nav light surround, painted matt black...........just all the screw heads to "silver over" as necessary. On the main gear mounting bolts ( 6/32 x 1" ).........I changed these to " Button Head 6/32 x 1" Bolts .......think that they look better and you can still get a good tightening torque on them if needed. All working great.........this is a link for the nav / landing light on the port wing..........CAUTION.....THE VIDEO SHOWS A VERY BRIGHT LIGHT............ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNAanOAhSz8&feature=plcp Cheers.................Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi. Thanks for your reply / question........my flying "buddy Mark" and I decided to get the P-47 to fly together,I got the H9 and he got the T/F Giant........both great ARTF's,but as mention earlier, the T/F being 1/5 scale,so bigger in all directions.Mark has the 5cyl ASP 400,I have the OS GT55.........so we are doing our builds along side each other !!! Although this is thread is for the H9 P-47.........thought this would be of interest to all,to see how Mark is doing with his build,so these are a few photos of his engine mounting. You can see from the pics that the mounting is off-set ( as per the H9 P-47 ),so Mark unfortunately has had to cut a couple of "holes" for his cowling to fit over the rockers on two of the cylinders ( will get a pic of this to post later ). Both of us will be probably doing our "maidens" at the same time,so will post the results as and when we do them..........meanwhile the "builds" continue !!! Cheers..............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Carl. I think if you were to use the 57,it would be best to mount it in the horizontal way.........you would obviously have to do the side cut-outs for the cylinders in the cowl. Not sure if you have seen this one on Youtube.......T/F Giant P-47 with Saito 57 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-PrLzezfVM The T/F P-47 is quite a bit bigger than the H9 P-47.......especially if you compare the wings !!!! ( my flying mate is building a T/F Giant P-47.......he is using the ASP 400 5cyl radial, also he has had to do some cut outs on the cowl !! ). Looking at the mounting dimensions of the 57,to mount vertical you will have to do some "fancy wood-work" on the firewall to allow for the 100+mm mounting length, the other dimension of the mount is ok....So if you are going to use the 57,go with the HORIZONTAL way.The length is about ok ( from firewall to prop-driver,just a few mm longer than shown on the H9 instructions )........don't forget you have about 20mm or so to protrude into the firewall. On the weight side of things,I would guess that the 57 ( complete, less battery ) would be approx 1LB or so heavier than the Evo set up.......... I think if it were me,although the 57 is a great sounding engine + plenty of power and can swing a good size prop set-up............I would prefer for use another set up in keeping with the "cowl-lines" on the H9 P-47.............. Hope all goes well with your build.......... Cheers.............Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Carl. I'm not sure that you will be able to fit the 57 in the cowl ( even top to bottom ).......looking at the 57 dimensions, the overall height ( or width ) of the outer top of each cylinder to cylinder is 232mm,therefore you will need at least half of that to fit in a vertical position. Just took some basic dimensions of my cowl on the H9 P-47,together with where the crankshaft should exit the front of the cowl....to me it will not fit inside without the top cylinder sticking out of the cowl by a fair amount.( there is on you tube a TF Giant P-47 using the Saito 57,but mounted horizontal.......it to has one of the cylinder heads sticking out of the side of the cowl...as the engine is off-set on all these birds.....the TF Giant P-47 is bigger, looking about 1/5 scale as opposed to the H9 at 1/6 ). Have you got the H9 30cc P-47.......? With respect to running the 57 in the vertical position, you could just do a engine test run-up on a stand to see..........I can't see there being too much of a problem with it running that way,as you say they run all ways as a single......... Just do another dimension check for the 57.......... Cheers...........Nick (UK).

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Guys. Trust all your builds are going well and all the items for the "elecrtic conversion" are delivered............hope we can see some photos of the "electric-builds" ????? So are there any "Maidens" coming up soon ??? I have just completed my U/C and sequencer installation on the P-47,I know John has shown some photos very early on in this thread, with regard to the "Inner Gear Doors, but I thought I would add a little to this.... I fly a JR set,but use Spektrum Rx's on all my aircraft.........so I don't have the advantage of the DX18 with it's built in sequencer,I opted for the "Jet Tronics" Door Sequencer. As I use a Spektrum Rx on the P-47,you will have to use a "signal amplifier" in order to get the Jet Tronics sequencer to "work" with Spektrum Rx's. For the Main Gear,I purchased the pnuematic H9 P-47 units ( new type arrived a couple of weeks ago....after John had noted that I was using the "Razor-Back" version...which as John knows will not fit in the 30cc P-47).I then re-converted the pnuematics to LADO Actuators ( plug and play and are programmable with staggered delays if you want to use that feature ).For the inner door servo I used "ALIGN DS 415M" servos........very small and plenty of power available. I decided to re-cover both the outer and inner gear doors with the same covering ( silver) that was used on the fuzz..........I thought that the colour match was not quite right for me.Not an easy task to do,especially as I'm pretty new to the covering scheme of things.......first attempt ok......well I think !!! Sequencer was a bit of a brain drain ( well for me at first !! ),but works very well and setting the thows on the servo for the inner doors was pretty easy.........the other timings are just by trial and error. These are my photos,so I hope they will be of help to somebody ??? The next post,I will show the links for my Sequencer testing.........just a little more "hot-forming of the doors,to get a good seat and next to try and work out a way of slowing down the inner gear door servo. ( assuming that the signal from the sequencer will allow this to be done???? ANYBODY TRIED THIS YET ??? Cheers............Nick (UK).

Hi Curt. When you cut the cowl slits, just have a steady hand with the Dremel.....When I was cutting mine,I forgot about the mountings....luckily,I only just caught one with the disc!!! Have a look at the cuts I did with mine on page 13. I also cut away the lowest part of the lower cowl flaps at the bottom of the cowl. Hi Guys. This is the link for the web-site that I found to "source" the lighting............( Bit mind blowing when you first see the site and all the info....but he does do some intetresting lighting devices :cockpit lighting and there are some devices for the "formation lights" if you are going to d these on the P-47. GIVE IT A LOOK [;)] http://www.lightingforaeromodels.co.uk/ It is a bit of an "intense" web-site,lots of info..........it's all there,so have a careful read.Ross who owns the company is a great character.......knows his stuff ( he is a retired Air Traffic Controller ),started off by doing minature lighting for model trains. The items are a very good price and he will ship overseas to customers........again,lots of info to take in,as long as you state the voltage that you will be using,he will supply all the necessary "resistors" to lower the volts for EACH lighting device ( as they all will require a different value of resistor, different colours require a different operating voltage ). If you can solder two wires together.........job done, very easy !!! ( NOTE : you do not need a massive soldering iron !!!,smaller the better......as Ross says : it's not as if you are soldering lead pipes together !!! ). Cheers..............Nick. RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Guys. Thought I would post my progress with the landing light / wing nav lighting. I needed access to the pitot-tube area on the wing ( hoping to install telemetry for air-speed ),so I thought I would try to fit in the retracting landing light there or as close as I could........looking at the info that I have on the full-size,it would appear that on the "bubble top",the landing light can be in either of two places.........behind the U/C on the port side or the underside of the port wing tip ( worst place !!! so I found out !!! ). Basic parts are : 26mm dia reflector ( didn't want to go to scale small here ),off-set hinge,micro-servo ( Spektrum DSP60 programmable ),micro switch + wire.........SHOULD HAVE ATTENDED A QUICKIE COURSE ON KEY-HOLE SURGERY BEFORE DOING THIS LANDING LIGHT !!! The Nav LED,s are std 5mm dia hi- intensity, runnng on 6volts,but with a resistor in line to drop the volts..........Landing light is a "Power-Chip",again running on a 6volts with a resistor to drop the volts down. The arm on the retraction servo operating the micro-switch......I have made the module plug in,so easy to do maintenance. Thought I would "slave" the landing light servo with the flaps ( having set the end points on the micro-servo,does not matter where the flap servo position is,once switched to say half flaps, landing light will extend to full position + it is slowed with the servo speed control of the flaps ).The Nav lights will just be a manual switch ( at the moment ). I still have to finish the "cosmetics" of the landing light module + the nav light lens surround............but thought I would post at this point I may have to change out the landing light servo as it does "chatter" a bit,but no stalling as I have checked the current drain and it is very low.....to zero on the extension and retraction end points !!! These are the photo's.......

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi All. My "Box" shows 3 power "sources"............Electric,Evo 40GX and Saito FG30........Templates for engine mounting included one for the Saito FG30......... Would therfore suggest that the Saito FG30 /FG36 is ok for the Kit. As you know,I have fitted the OS 55GT Petrol. Hope all your builds going well............should get up soon my photos of the nav / re-tracting landing light fixings ( gone for the wing mounted landing light).................just a couple of "niggles" to sort out, but, pleased to say all working !!!!) Cheers.................Nick (UK).
