RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Dear All I sold my TT Bearcat at the Nat's on Sunday for £40 I used the money to purchase balsa and lite ply for the Liberator project. I also got some 6 inch main wheels from Falcon for it. Dibble purchased some depron, balsa and lite ply for his version. So we have both made a start regarding acquiring materials for both models. The only downside of the size of this model, is that Dibble's CNC machine is not able to cut some of the larger parts. I think I need to change the name of this thread to, For those whol love world war two fighters and bombers and everything else in between. Regards Phil G.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Da Rock You are correct regarding the high aspect ratio wings, they scare me to death, we will modify them slightly. Tibenham airfield is owned solely by the gliding club (www.norfolkglidingclub.com) and they are very conscious of it's history. The actor James Stewart was based at Tibenham, he returned there on several occasions and donated money towards the airfield. There is a history room in the clubhouse. I think it was 1992, the then confederate air force brought their B24 Diamond Lil to the UK. It flew over many of the US WW2 bases including Tibenham and Rackheath. Thank you for your very interesting post. Regards Phil G.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Dear All As many of you might know I organise two scale events at Tibenham airfield Norfolk each year. One of the events is called the 'Salute to the 445th bomb group' the 445h were based at Tibenham during the war and they operated B24 Liberators. So I thought it only right that we should build a Liberator. I asked the main man Dibble if he would design one for us and he has agreed to do so. The Liberator will be 1/9th scale which gives it a wing span of 146.6 inches. The plan is that two Liberator's will be built both electrically powered, one by Dibble using predominately depron and the other being built by myself and my brother Clive using traditional ply and balsa and will have rivet detail etc. As an aside American aircraft had such good nose art and colour schemes etc. There was a Liberator called witchcraft, which (excuse the pun) I quite like but I don't think it was a Tibenham aircraft. I am not one for build threads (as my building is not very good) but I will post some pictures at the start and finish and give details of how it flies good or bad. I am hoping to get a good stash of wood at the nationals. Regards Phil G. PS. I can't wait to get started on this one.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Dear All It is only a week (6.7.12) to go until the Salute to the 445th Bomb Group Event at Tibenham airfield Norfolk UK. The 445th operated B24 Liborators. By far, the 445th's most notorious mission is the Kassel Mission[1] of 27 September 1944. In cloud, the navigator of the lead bomber miscalculated and the 35 planes diverted from the rest of the 2nd Air Division and proceeded to Göttingen some 35 miles (56 km) from the primary. After the bomb run, the group was attacked from the rear by an estimated 150 Luftwaffe planes, resulting in the most concentrated air battle in history. The Luftwaffe unit was a Stormgruppen a special unit intended to attack bombers by flying in tight formations; up to ten fighters in line abreast. This was intended to break the bomber formation at a single pass. The 361st Fighter Group intervened preventing completed destruction of the Group. Twenty-nine German and 25 American planes went down in a 15-mile (24 km) radius. Only four 445th planes made it back to the base – two crashing in France, one in Belgium, another at RAF Old Buckenham, two landed at Manston – a 75% casualty rate. Only one of the 35 was fit to fly next day but 445th sent 10 planes to the same target, Kassel. Regards Phil G.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Here is Dibble's latest model. Dibble designed and built this model from scratch. The model is an Amstrong Whitworth Albemarle an obscure bomber of World War two. The Albemarle had a tricycle undercarriage which was unusual for that period, it soon became obsolete. However, it soon found a new lease of life. The Albemarle was underpowered, but it had one advantage for glider towing. Its tricycle undercarriage put it into a flying attitude even before it began to roll. The nose-wheel allowed full power to be applied rapidly because there was no torque to offset. It also prevented an overenthusiastic glider pilot from putting the tug into a nose-down attitude on the runway if the glider went into high-tow before the Albemarle was airborne. Albemarles from 38 Group took part in Operations Husky (the invasion of Sicily) and Elaborate (gliders to North Africa) and four Albemarle squadrons played an important role in Operation Overlord (D-Day). It also took part in operation market, the airborne part of market garden (Arnhem). Dibble's Albemarle is built to 1/12th scale (77 inch) is electrically powered and it flies beautifully. He has also designed a 1/12th scale (88 inch) Airspeed Horsa glider for me. The plan is the Albemarle will tow the Horsa aloft, that should be fun. Dibble has also made a cnc machine which he used to cut the parts for the Albemarle and Horsa. Regards Phil G.

Yes I have to agree, it does look a bit like an ugly Mitchell with it's tri undercart and twin fins. The model was hand painted with emulsion (latex) purchased off the shelf from B&Q (diy store). Regards Phil G.

Proof of BMFA or LMA insurance will need to be provided on the day. Food, Drink, Bar and Toilets are available at the club house. The Tibenham Ball will be held in the Clubhouse in the evening. Please post on this thread if interested. If you could also post some pictures of the models that you intend to bring to the event that would be nice. There is a strong chance that the NGC will be holding a Heritage airshow at Tibenham on Sunday the 8th of July and we have been asked to put on a model aircraft display, so if anyone would like to make a weekend of it here is your chance. I am also hoping that we will be able to sort a glider trial flight day as well. Saturday the 7th of July would be good. Caravan and camping facilities are available at Tibenham airfield. This is my tenth year of organising these events, so hopefully this will be a good one. Thank you. Tibenham Airfield Norfolk NR16 1NT Regards Phil G.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Dear All My Wife and I attended the Battle of Britain service at Norwich Cathedral this morning, it was a very nice service. As an aside, work on Norwich cathedral started in 1067 and took 200 hundred years to complete. After the service was over everyone gatherd outside for the march past by the Air Cadets, serving RAF personnel and members of RAFA and SoCA, and of course to see the flypast. I said to my Wife, that it is always the Spitfire that flies over the city, just as I said that the trusty Hurricane roared over, it flew near on a 360 over the city and then flew back over the parade just to the right of the cathedral spire, it waggled it's wings and then it was away back to it's home at RAF Coningsby. What a wonderful sight and sound. Seven American airman are officially listed as taking part in the Battle of Britain, Through special arrangement with the UK, they did not have to give up their US Citizenship to fly for the RAF. The first American to give his life in the Battle of Britain was Pilot Officer William M.L. Fiske of No. 601 Squadron. Fiske was a graduate of Cambridge University and a leading personality in the American bob sleigh teams that won the Olympic championships in 1928 and 1932. he died in hospital on 17 August 1940 after bringing back his damaged Hurricane to Tangmere. Many other nationalities fought and died in the Battle of Britain on our behalf, for that we will always be eternally grateful Below are some pictures of the service and parade. Regards Phil G.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Dear All Two weeks to go to the Bob, yippee. I have had a reply from Mike Rondot, Colt 'Old Boy' Gulf war one veteran and now professional artist. He is in America at the moment and away from his diary, if he is free he said he would like to attend the Bob event. As an aside Mike amassed over 5000 hours on fast jets, during his 25 years in the RAF. Jon N. will be staying with Andrew T. at Binham after the Bob event. Andrew has very kindly agreed, to allow us to use his facilities at his site near Binham over the weekend after the Bob. There is ample camping and caravan parking with water and waste facilities available, if anyone would like to stay for the weekend. Andrew asks for no money for this, but a donation to his charity (Air Ambulance) would be in order. Andrew's instructions, no jets and no IC's with Chinese silencers, his words not mine. Here are the coordinates for the Binham site, 52.923371,0.960483 So if you want to make a weekend of it, between Tibenham and Binham here is your chance. As an aside Andrew is one of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet. Word has come through from Jon N., that his Me. Gigant has flown successfully, he is going to paint it now that it has flown. Mudder's will hopefully be able to supply the tug for it at the Bob. Hopefully there will be some pictures here shortly, well done Jon. It is My eldest Brother's 70th Birthday (the owner) on the Sunday after the Bob. He will be having a party Sunday evening at the Cromer social club, Cromer is about 10 miles from Binham. There will be food, a bar and Karaoke. If any of our modelling friends would like to attend you would be more than welcome. I am going to have a go on the Karaoke, but don't let that put you off. Below is a picture of Mike Rondot Regards Phil G.
