RE: ModelTech Great Lakes Setup
BJamin, I have a little advice for you: Build this airplane, do a great job if you must and then take all of the valuable stuff out of it and hang it up. It is a beautifull airplane and is show quality. However, it is the worst airplane I have ever laid hands on. Take your valuable time and buy something worth having and worth flying. Just my $0.02 worth. Red

RE: AP Yello Jacket .15
I wouldn't do it if I were you. These are clean engines, they look great, run rather quiet and are virtually useless in the power range they are supposed to be at. If you had an application calling out for an .098, then yes, I would say use the AP .15. Otherwise, no way would I put that on an airplane that already has issues, such as an F4U. I would go out and drop the 40 bucks and get an OS 15 LA. It is worth it for the piece of mind. The AP might do it, but you will wish you didn't in the end. Just my $0.02 Red

RE: F7F Tigercat
Hello Everyone! It has been a while since I posted to RCUniverse, but alas, it is time once again. I have come into a beautiful F7F airplane that is worth its weight in gold. It is from plans and they were drawn by someone in '84 named Dan something. I am trying to be very careful with the plans until I can get them copied because they look liuke they are as old as they are. Anyway, I was walking around a swap meet here in Jacksonville Florida and saw this poor cob-web covered piece of balsa and plywood that had a sticker that said $50- on it. I picked up the fuselage and looked carefully, asked the man at the table if this was indeed an F7F and he agreed and added that it was only fifty bucks. Beneath my choking and glee, I replied with a question to the effect of: "Is this the complete plane or does it come with any other pieces?" He showed me the built up wings, minus the outer wing panels and the the four rolls of plans it was kitted from. Rather quickly, I somehow produced the cash and happily handed it over. He told me he had more pieces at the house, and when he stumbled upon them, he would bring them to me. By now, folks, I was about to jump up and down and scream like a little school girl. I was fit to be tied. This thing is amazing and was superbely built. The guy that sold it to me was a friend of a deceased modeler that was selling it as part of an estate sale for his widow. Needless to say, I got a good deal and the opportunity to finish what a fellow modeler started. Now, on my building board is a somewhat built F7F Grumman Tigercat that needs a lot of attention. It came with Century Jet model retracts that are perfect and in working condition, I hope. The cockpit was started and about 60% finished and the inner wings are blocked in and ready for final fit out. The plans call for an OS60fx on each wing, but I expect it will need a little more after the plans are finished. The plans have not only mention, but also engineering for the wings to fold and the mechanism to make them do so. It has plans for all of the missles and the torpedo, plus a couple of bombs or drop tanks. As I said, I only got it on Saturday and I have been handling it carefully. Now, we finally come to the part about why I am posting here. I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP I CAN GET! :) I have only been building for around five or six years, so I am new enough to know that I can never get enough information. The end result here is to finish this plane and make it competition grade, IMAA legal and quality, plus be able to comfortably fly because I can't wait to fly this beautiful baby. So, does anyone know anything about this thing? Are there any indiosyncrocies I need to be aware of? Is there anything I need to know about the Century Jet retracts? It also came with the air bottle, but I have yet to own an airplane with functioning retracts, so that aspect I am very new at. I have built a lot of airplanes so far, so I am not intimidated by the build aspect. Right now, I am up to around thirty five or fourty airplanes I have built, plus around the same amount of ARF's. Building is fun and I would not trade that part for anything. Picking up where someone else left off scares me a little bit, but I will make due. I am going to take some pictures of what I have to start with and I will be happy to show any progress I make along the way. THe airplane looks as if it was out in this guys garage for a while as the 4-40 rods are rusty pretty good, so I will have to replace those. The engine nacelles are bullet proof too. He made them out of 1/4" ply and three laminations of the same for the firewall. Maybe he was going to mount V6's on it or something, I don't know. Regardless, I will have to fix that as well. If there is anyone out there in the RCUniverse that has built one of these from scratch, and especially one from this set of plans, can you give me a shout? I would really appreciate any help I can get on anything and there is not one thing you can tell me that I will not take in and digest as usefull. All information I receive is more than I have started with. I like this airplane so much, it pushed my PBY-5M on the back burner and that is (was) my favorite airplane of all times. I am not a WWI or WWII only kind of person. Actually, I am not a "anything!" I like planes that not everyone else has, like the PBY, the BTE Vortex, the Bristol Scout and a few that I designed and built myself that look nothing like anything else in the sky. This one is right up my alley too as there were only 360 something of them built and only 6 still flying. MY KIND OF AIRPLANE! :) So, thanks to anyone and everyone that has anything to add to my new adventure. The progress may be slow going as I am a full time employee of a salt mine run facility and a full time student in college, not to mention a full time Dad and as good of a husband as I can be in between all of that. However, I will finish it for that man that started it because I know he will want to see it from heaven as he would have done it. That is my goal and I will reach it...eventually. Thanks in advance everyone! Cheers! Red

RE: My landing gear is behind the CG...Help!
I will have to try to rake the gear forward. I did not think it was a tricycle config gear assembly because it was a solid epoxy and fiberglass shell, from the nose to the tail section. The only cut outs were on the underside where the wing and fuel tank go and a small opening for an engine on the side. There was a motor mount epoxied in place too, on its side. So, since there were no gear points in the front, I made it a tail dragger. It did have a nice flat spot in the tail to accomodate a tail wheel, so I concluded that was what it was set up for. Thanks for the suggestions though. Are there any other things I can do? As it is, it will never taxi. So, I will have to do something prior to flight. As far as the gear rake is concerned, the gear rail that I was telling you about, that is right at about 5 inches aft of the leading edge. The wing chord is 13 inches. Needless to say, that will be a hell of a rake! Is there anything else I should consider before I do that? Thank you all so far for the comments and ideas though. I really appreciate your help. Red

My landing gear is behind the CG...Help!
Hello All, I am building an airplane somebody gave me. It was just a fiberglass shell fuselage and a foam core, balsa coated wing when I got it. Since then, I have installed a servo tray inside, and mounted all the servos, minus the ones in the wings. My problem is different than what I have encountered in the past though. The wings had rails already installed for wire gear. So, when I put gear in the supplied openings, the airplane will not sit on the tail wheel. To add insult to injury, it is balanced right now at around 25-30% mac, so it does not need to be any more tail heavy, at least until after the first flight. So, here is my question: What should I move; the CG or the gear? Or, should I add more weight to the tail to get it to sit on its tail wheel? I am kind of mistified here. I have built a lot of airplanes but seldom from other people. I usually build them from scratch and I take care of all of this when I am building. Therefore, this is the first time anything like this has been facing me on the building board. As far as what equipment I have in the airplane, I have an old Super Tigre .91 up front (that is kind of heavy, but the airplane is about 90 size from what I can calculate. The configuration of the plane lends me to believe it is a pattern plane, but there are no indications of it anywhere. Can someone please help me muddle through this? I am hoping I can rely on you all and your exerience to figure this out for me. Meanwhile, it will sit on the bench until further notice. If it would help anyone, I could post a picture of it on here for your examination. Thanks in advance for your help. Red

RE: BTE Delta Vortex Construction Photos
I am actually a little disappointed. I hate to say that because it is such a wonderful conversation piece at the field, but I have not got more than a few good runs out of this thing. Between the engine(s) dying and the control surfaces giving me problems, I have not had the best of luck. I love the thing, don't get me wrong, but I have never had it in the air long enough to do all the stuff I think it will do! I started out with a Super Tigre .91 and that one would not stay running for me, no matter what I did. I changed the whole fule system and it would never run a full tank. I changed that to an Evolution 1.00. No different. It dies all the time too. Then, during one of those rare flying times when it stayed up, the right aileron servo stripped out. Somehow, I managed to land it without crashing though. The next time I flew it, the nose gear fell off on the second go round. Believe it or not, it was not because it was not tight either. The gear fitting that attaches to the structure of the airplane broke and the captured nut was still safely locked into place on the gear, once I finally found it. After I fixed that, a freak thunderstorm came up and blew it off the table and the right wing tip broke. So, needless to say, I don't think it likes me. However, I am not one to give up, so I will eventually get it running and I will fly the tail off of it then. Somehow, someday. Anyway, it was noce to see you are still out there Salmonbug. I do not think I have talked to you since the Mig-27 drone days. : ) Talk to you soon. I am going to the sea and sky air show tomorrow at Jax beach. I have got to get some sleep though.... You will like how she flies girth67. Mine flies along like it is being pulled by a string. Before you get too used to things though, you may want to reinforce the gear attach point. It is a little weak. Aside from that, mine tracks straight, stalls perfectly straight, tail snaps like I am killing it and pulls out of everything like it is nothing. I have not done much 3D with it yet, but I will get to that point soon. Have fun with yours. You are right, for the price, you just can't beat it. Red

Engine Questions
Hello Almighty helpful people... I have a list of questions that I need answering and everyone at my flying field is usually too busy for me to ask them. So, I will ask the invisible people, because you all are much more helpful! : ) First question: I have an MVVS 61 with a sort-of tuned pipe. I actually know nothing about pipes, but it looks like a butane fluid tube with a pressure tap and an exit. This engine has a lot less power than my Tower Hobbis 61, which lends me to wonder what I am doing wrong. If it is the pipe that is causing it to slow down, where can I get a regular muffler for less than my total personal worth? Also, what size prop should I be using on this? Second Question: I have a Super Tigre 91 that has a J'Tec muffler, pitts style, I think. This engine must hate me. I am convinced of this because it never does the same thing twice. I can, however, tell you what it does the most. It just dies. There are no signs leading up to the ceasing of combustion, only the vast silence that follows. It usually dies just after tuning it on the ground, right before flight...OR...when it is flying and I reduce and then add throttle. So, here is a breakdown of this engine and its mishaps: When I am flying it at level attitude and I throttle down for a touch and go, it is fine. However, when I go to take back off, it will run for about five seconds (just enough for it to make for a sketchy landing) and then die. That is, if I make it into the air. It also dies on me when I am tuning it on the ground, richening it or leaning it for daily variations in temperature. After I tune it, hold it nose high for lean out checks, do the pinch test and other ground like stuff, I will taxi it out to the runway and right before I take off, it will die. SEE, I told you it hated me! What am I doing worng on this engine? Now, both engines are run on the same fuel. It is Cool Power 10% nitro. The MVVS is swinging an 11x6 prop and the Super Tigre is swinging a 13x6. I originally had a 14x6 on the Super Tigre, but the manual says that I over propped it and I thought it was over heating. I am using OS #3's or #8 plugs, I can't remember which, but I am at about 3 feet above sea level here in Florida, so that is what I was told to use. Can anyone out there in the RC universe help me? I am so frustrated over these two engines I just want to scream. All of my other engines are about the same, so I expect I am doing whatever I am doing to all of them. With the exception of my new Evolution 61 which I love because it runs sooooooooooooo good. I will buy another Evolution engine just because of this one. Thank you all in advance. Thank you very much for your help...God knows I need it! : ) Red

RE: WM Groovy 50 3D
Hello All, I have the Groovy 50 F3A 3D airplane and I can say that it is definitely worth the money. The only thing that has gone wrong is the gear. Although they look nice, they are built on glass waiting to break. It is a light airplane and handles like it is being pulled by a string. I have to rebuild mine because of the gear problems unfortunately though I do not mind because it such a pleasing airplane. It is easy to track in the sky and very easy to fly. It reminds me of a trainer when it comes to landing because it just floats forever. I also added spoilerons and flaperons and they make a huge difference! If any of you all get one, before you put it all together, just look at the way it is put together first. It is beautiful! For 139.00, it is a hard one to beat! Good luck and have fun. Red

RE: Kit Building..
Thanks for the input everyone. I found out what happened. The ribs for one wing are different sizes from the same ribs on the other wing. Some are longer and others are taller. This is one of those things to look out for when building a kit. Just because the kit is lasar cut and lasar stenciled with numbers, does not necessarily mean the parts are accurate as far as symmetry. I went back and measured everything twice, on each wing half. What I found is that the ribs I used on the left half of the wing are about an eighth of an inch shorter, chord-wise. Since I got this kit from a friend, who got it from a friend, the history is up to your imagination. I do not know how old the kit is or how many other people looked through it and had their hands all over it. My lack of initial preperation taught me a lot. I guess we can add this one to the list of things to watch out for in a kit. Computers are programmed by people. Just because it is lasar cut does not mean it is right. Measure before you do anything. Thanks again for everyone's help. Red

RE: Kit Building..
Hello All, Well, since questions and answers are flowing so nicely in here, I have some of my own questions seeking resolution. I am building a CG Super Chipmunk from a kit I got from a friend, who got it from a friend. Like most of you already know, missing pieces is now common and not suprising anymore. However, I just finished building both the wing halves and went to trial fit them together with the supplied dihedral brace. When I did, the two wing halves are misaligned forward and aft. I went back and repinned the wings to the plans to see if I goofed something up, but found nothing. The only missing pieces in the wings were two ribs and one of the 1/4 x 1/4 braces forward of the main spar. Anyway, the wing is built and the bottom side is sheeted. Now what do I do? According to the blueprints, I did everything correctly. There was not a definite trim line for the two skins (inboard side of bottom sheeting) so I left them long. Now, I have trimmed to assemble and found this out. I am now at the too late side and looking for advice. This is only my second kit assembled airplane, but I have built about a dozen from my head. Did I just overlook one of the fundamentals? Help. Red

Tram, Yup, they are. I just got one about a week ago from a guy at my local flying field here in Florida. It is completely lasar cut. So far, I have built up the tail feathers and the left wing. It is going pretty good. As this is my second build from a kit, I am learning a lot as I go. I am really looking forward to flying this one though. It is such a pretty airplane, and I love aerobatics, so this airplane has my name written all over it. I'll post pictures of mine when I am done. I have a reputation for covering my airplanes a little differently than others and since I am not good at scale, I go all out for "wow" factor. Red

RE: Sportsman Avation - Aero Princess
Hey again, I was using a 8x6 with my AP. I also checked into what others said about the AP .15 and all the reports were the same. CRAP! One guy, after a bunch of modifications got his to scream, but it took him a bit of metalic rearrangement. I still have the wing and it is in good shape, so I thought about using it and building a wood fuse. I like working with what I am used to, so that would be an instant improvement. I may even reorder the tail feathers because they are sweet, straight from the factory. You are right, the airplane is pretty cool. I miss having it. Maybe just talking about it will give me the will to go ot and redo it again. Talk at you later... Red

Dialated, I am glad to hear you had a good experience with yours. My AeroPrincess met its demise when I slapped an OS 25 in it. You are right, it snaps like nothing I have ever seen and the rolls were so quick, my blender at home shook in the corner. Unfortunately, since it is made of nothing more than milk carton plastic, the fuse broke on one of those snaps. I will replace it eventually, but it is low on my agenda. Thanks again for the update though. I always like to hear about someone's success, despite my own opinions. It is those times that reminds me to try, try again. Later. Red

Hello All, Well, I finally moved into my new house, turned the garage into my workshop and built my Vortex. I did nothing any different than anyone else, but let me say, I am very proud of mine. This was my first kit ever. I have built airplanes from scratch before, but those were just ideas in my head, materializing into airplanes...sometimes! Anyways, this one was my first attempt at building and I think Bruce Tharpe and the gang did a fantastic job with the entire kit. I cannot wait until I can buy another one! I test flew it yesterday and boy, this thing flies great! It is smooth, graceful and full of energy when you push up on the throttle! I powered mine with a Super Tiger .91 and a J-tec muffler, Futaba radio and a couple of Hitec servos. I finished off the nose for a sleeker look as some of you have done, blending it into the spinner. All I have right now is building pictures, so I will get my camera back out and take some finished pictures for you all. I figured the building pictures would just be redundant, so I witheld. Anyways, thanks to all of you for the help in building my first kit plane. Thanks to BTE for designing such a fantastic flyer and thanks to everyone I forgot! If anyone has an extra of these they do not want, drop me a line, I will take it from you!!!!! Later, Red

Yeah, I know, too hot. Anyway, I am very pleased with it so far. He already had a Tower Hobbies 75 up front with a Brison exhaust and a Futaba flight pack, which goes along great with my 9CAP! RE: Float flying with a canard
What are you powering it with? How much is the all up weight of the model? These are things you need to know to design good floats. Based on that, you might be able to find a good set of park flyer skis and mold the foam to them. In order for the floats to slice through the water and maintain a good path, you would want to taper them down to a hull like shape. As long as you keep the model in the range of a .40 size airplane, weight-wise, you should not have any problems. And remember, if you get a two float kit for the mains, you are nearly removing all of the weight from the nose already. All you really want to do is ensure that the nose does not take a swim. I would make the nose float a small, tapered hull like bullets.

RE: AP Yello Jacket .15
Darren, Thanks for the feedback. My last effort was to try some 30% heli fuel to see if that would do it. Nope. See, that is what got me too. It idles great. It just purrs and purrs at an incredible low idle. It even transitions really nice, up to whatever the RPM's are. The problem is that it never winds out. It never reaches peak RPM's. I usually run 15% nitro castor. (The pink Omega stuff) That stuff keeps all of my other engines purring and screaming at any throttle setting. So I think that it should be fine, with the exception of the need for some more nitro. Other than that and from reading other posts in here, I found that AP uses the same carb and exhaust from their .09 engines. I guess to cut mfg. costs. So, what I was going to do is ream the hole out on the exhaust a little and open up the carb too. I am not doing any competitions so rules are not an issue. Since I am an aircraft mechanic by profession, these little mods are easily accomplished. Anyways, thanks for the reply. If you have any other options before I do the required modifications, just drop me a line. Thanks again for the help. Any more is still appreciated. Red

RE: Float flying with a canard
You know, if you think about it and balance the plane accordingly, you could use a ski meant for snow conditions and just glue a little piece of foam on the bottom. That would keep it light and still retain the ability to float. When you go to treat the foam, you can use a heat gun or iron to mold it where you want it. Cooler foam works really good for stuff like that. Let me know what you end up doing and how it turns out. Red

RE: Float flying with a canard
Well, based on the fact that I like to try different things with my models, I would think that it could easily work. I would however, make it a tri-float plane, using the nose float for stearing. Since a canard is inherantly light on the nose, a small and manageable float could be employed as a stearing device and if you really wanted to play around, it could be linked with the elevator. But, like I said, I like to try things that others have not done yet. If you do, will you post some pictures? I have always loved canards and this sounds pretty neat. Red

Hello All, I purchased an AP Yellow Jacket .15 engine some time ago for an airplane I bought at the same time; the Aero Princess, by Sportsman Aviation. My question lies with the engine. Why can I not get this little engine to perform? Following the manufacturers recommendations, I adhered strictly to the break-in procedures, ran the suggested amount of fuel, and followed the correct percentage of nitro content. With all of that said, I can not under any circumstances, get this engine to rev up anywhere close to where they say it should. I propped it with the recommended pitch prop for break-in, but now, almost two months later, it will not even spin a 7x6 prop up! What am I doing wrong? I know it is lean enough, and I know it is not too lean. The engine shows no signs of external wear, overheating discoloration, difficulty starting or anything else. It just will not run up. Can any of you help me? After I broke in the engine sufficiently (actually more than the manufacturer recommends fuel wise) I put it in that Aero Princess whereupon it crashed because the engine did not have enough power. Since then, I have built another airplane that the engine would not even get off the ground! The last airplane weighed in under two pounds, so weight is not an issue either. Please, if treating me like an imbicile is what is necessary to help me figure this out, then go right ahead. I have another one new in the box. I am afraid to use it for fear they are just useless engines. Any help is highly appreciated. Red

RE: IT'S TAIL-HEAVY? MAYBE, MAYBE NOT!
How would I check? I tried to line everything up like the book said to, but it is next to impossible to check incedence after it is all finished. Which wing should be which? As it is, I think the bottom wing is at zero and the top is at neg. 2 or 3. I can't tell for sure. Do you have any tips? Thanks Red

RE: IT'S TAIL-HEAVY? MAYBE, MAYBE NOT!
Ok all, now I have another question. I assembled and built an old Modeltech Great Lakes Biplae. According to the reviews from RCU (and me, for that matter) this is a crap kit before I even got started. Now, here is where the question lies. When I was flying it, it performed lousy. It would not climb, would not dive, it just kind of lugged around the sky. So, I repropped it as I knew a .61 is ample for a 40 size airplane. Ok, now if an airplane is nose heavy, it will climb slowly and dive quick, right? If it is tail heavy, it will want to fly under itself, namely the tail will always want to fall, right? What causes an airplane to not turn? This biplane will not corner. I put it in a 60 degree turn and pulled hard up elevator and it creaped around. What causes that? I am sorry to ask so much, but you all seem to be on the same wavelength as me and I just have to know before I trash this stinking airplane! Thanks for your help. Red

RE: ModelTech Great Lakes Setup
Flight report: I hate this plane. This plane does not fly good. It does not fly even close to alright. It turns like a greyhound bus, corners like a crippled sloth, climbs like a dead monkey and has an all out flight performance of a Yugo! However, it does look nice! I am in this hobby to fly the wheel pants off of my airplanes and to design and invent new flying aircraft. This model will play nicely into one of my evil schemes! (Muhahaha) The first thing I am going to do is take it back apart. I will remake the cabanes and center struts to better accomodate installation at the field. I am going to cut the fuselage up and make it longer, but while I am cutting it up, I will probably redo the fuselage in its entirity. BEFORE I do all of this, I need to ask you all a question. If I am flying a well balanced aircraft around a turn, it tracks well with a little up elevator around the bend. This one will not turn a corner to save itself. Is it balanced wrong? I got the addendum from Modeltech for the new CG, but that does not help anything. I am powering it with a TH .61, so power is not an issue. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix it...before I hack it all up? Anyone? Please! Any comments welcome. Red

RE: Propjet, mig 27 target drone
Mike, I got it at my local hobby store, but I think Home Depot keeps resin and hardener that is good for boats, which will say if it is okay for foam. I also used some stuff called Marine epoxy resin made by bondo. I could not tell the difference, other than price. I hope I helped! Red
