RE: Walmart Submarine = Cool ! Part II
Hello Merlin, The same thing happened to my Chicago before I turned it yellow. Water must have gone inside somewhere! Water could be in the RX compartment or one of the 3 motor boxes. In my case, the side motor box developed a hair-line crack & I have described it in more details here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6086994/tm.htm Hope it helps. Regards Normanski,

Hello broncojd, Let us know how you get on with the 540 motor. I tried using a 540 motor with 7.2v NiMh battery, but even with the lowest pinion, it was still bogging. I think the ESC was cutting out. I think you should be OK with an extra cell. I am very interested to know how yours would run. Keep us inform please. Normanski

Hello broncojd, I've got mine from GPM racing shop in Hong Kong. And I think this is the link for the motor mount for a 540 motor.... http://www.gpmracing.com.hk/car/page/pop_mrx4_13.asp I am NOT 100% sure if this is the right item, so you better send them an email to check. May be you can look up your local GPM agent for one. Good luck. Normanski

RE: Walmart Submarine = Cool ! Part II
Hello RSEA, I have the USS Dallas & USS Connecticut, but not the latest Gator/Shark. But if they employ the same drive unit, then I can open one up for you. The earlier ship Like the Dallas has a transparent housing, but the Connecticut has a yellowish housing instead. I suspect the Gator/Shark would have the similar housing? I have also noticed the drive motor running faster in reverse, when I resurrected my USS Chicago aka 'The Yellow Submarine'. The drive motor runs even slower if I apply the side-way thruster motor at the same time. I basically reversed the drive motor connections, so now I have to press the reverse button on the Remote-control to get the sub to go forward. Here is a photo of the drive motor & the reduction gear. I am no motor expert so cannot tell you what type it is, but I really don't think this motor even with more gearing is going to drive any static dive device. However, it would be great if you can prove me wrong.

RE: My motor is STUBBORN!!
Have you tried taking the comm back to the LHS & have it rewind? With a little bit of know-how, a soldering Iron, the right wire & a machine to balance to rewind comm. It can be done. Depends on how much the LHS would charge, you can always ask I suppose. Normanski

RE: My motor is STUBBORN!!
That is Strange! Sounds like you have tried almost everything. A question for you, what happened when you connect the 4C battery directly to the motor during break in? Did the motor spin straight a way without being kicked? If it ran without problem, then may be the problem is on the ESC/battery. I am not familiar with your motor nor the ESC, but it is obvious that the modified motor draws a lot more current at start-up compare to the stock. This can cause the voltage across the battery to drop for a short while, and almost all modern ESCs have Low voltage cut-off to prevent over-discharge of the battery. If the low voltage cut off is tripped during start-up, then it explains what you've been seeing. It also explains why it can run after you push it. I had a similar experience when I tried to installed a brush modified 540 in my Mini Quake. The motor run OK with the truck off the ground, but 'stubborn' like yours with the truck on the ground. Any way, I did not persuit any further with my 540 MQ project, but I think going from a 6 cell set-up to 7 cell, or going Li-Po can probably resolve the problem. Try a different ECS perhaps? Hope it helps. Normski

Hello broncojd, Well, this is just a homemade jobie, or I would be selling them if I can make them refittable! It is glued to the chassis with Silicone Sealant, so is by no mean permanent. With all the time in my hand, perhaps I should look into making a better job of it. Normanski

RE: official mini quake thread
Hello People, It has gone a bit quiet here!! May be you guys are all preparing for Christmas? Any way, I replaced both the Spur & pinion gears recently as the drive-train was making some loud noise. I then took the MQ out to the park for some off-road action. It was running great until I heard some grinding noise! Oh no, my newly installed gears I thought! Well, I was lucky that time & the gears were not damaged. To prevent it from happening again, I built this gear-cover out of a name-card box. I don't think I have ever heard of a gear-cover for the MQ? Have Fun.

RE: Replacement Shocks for Mini Quake
Hello joeyblaze, Well, I am simply a Lazy person. Keeping 8 shocks in good working order has to be more different than 4 & You get less chance of a leak. Look at the Losi LST, I think less shocks mean less work. Normanski

RE: Replacement Shocks for Mini Quake
Hello People, Since I started the thread, I thought I would end it properly by showing you what I have done. I have found some softer springs from GPM since I last posted, and have managed to reduce the compressed length of these TopCad shocks to 43mm.(The original Mini-Quake shocks were 40mm) So this is probably as good as it gets. The springs may still be too hard but then I don't often get to run the Truck off-road, so until I know how to tune the shocks properly, I am happy with the end results. Now I have 4 shocks instead of 8, and the rebuilt kit for all 4 shocks is only about US$4. Thank you for all your ideas & contributions

RE: Replacement Shocks for Mini Quake
Hello People, OK, I found these TOPCAD shocks from my friendly LHS. They are of the exact same length as the Stock Mini Quake shocks. Fitting them on was not too painful neither. Here is the link for them & the part number is 50111GU. http://www.topcad.com.hk/v2/products/suspensionparts.php The original springs that came with the TOPCAD shocks were too hard, so the guy at my LHS gave me some shorter but much softer springs to try. It seems quite promising. Here is a photo of the end result. I only hope I can take as good a photo as Dale.

Hello People, Just found out I have blown one of the eight shocks on my Mini-Quake. Do you have any recommendations for 3rd party replacement parts. Also, has any of you tried using 4 shocks instead of 8?? 4 Shocks mean half as likely to leak. What do you think?? Normanski

RE: Battery Mod
Hello People, In an attempt to try to improve the radio range, I did try running the receiver on around 9V. I built a converter to step up the 4.8V from 4 x 1.2V NiMH to around 9V. Only the receiver electronics were on 9V while the motors were still directly from the NiMHs. There was no range improvement unfortunately, but the electronics were not damaged neither. Regarding the Captain's over torque problem, may I suggest a propeller with less pitch? I put in a propeller with less pitch on my resurected "Yellow Submarine". The result is much less Torque roll with not a bad top speed. Have a look at this video and let me know what you think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nURJ8nkRfA The Photo below shows the 2 different propellers, the one on the right is the original:
