RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
Pka, I have the same engine as you w/ pump. My extra is set up stock. For the longest time my plane did weird things when looping, especially when coming out of a loop. Extra would drop right wing. Had an expert buddy fly my plane and he said there was really nothing wrong with it except it does some unexpected moves during a loop. He tried both inside and outside loop. Same result. He suggested since my cylinder head is on one side that perhaps its not balanced side to side. Sure enough when he picked it up it tilted towards the cylinder. I ended up placing bunch of weights on the tip of the wing (opposite of the cylinder head). Walla, plane now tracks much better in all orientation. Jimmy

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
bez88, I built a bridge made of light ply - glued to the Wing Bolt Plate and to the firewall. dont forget to add blocks or triangle scraps on the firewall side to support the bridge. I then used computer packaging foam - similar to mattress toppers - and stuffed it on the sides, the top, and the bottom. Loop a velcro strap around the tank. velcro bytes into the tightly fit foam. tightly secured and if needed service just slide it out with a little pressure.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Flew her this morning with a 14x8 MAS. She flew faster - which helped. Thought I trimmed it but she still wants to pitch up. Looking at the horizontal stab - the elevator looks like it has a lot of down. she balances right on the mark but she flys as if she is tail heavy. can't figure it out. Anyway, trying my first approach she kept glliding over the runway. second approach the same. thats with full flaps. I went out further and kept a nice glide slope - cleared the orange trees and right in front of me she landed and stuck to the ground - she kept rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling (engine was holding a good steady idle rpm) and at the last 30 feet I tried a little swirve to bleed off the speed - the left wing lifted up - right wing rubbed ground - then it spun out to the right. in the process the right main gear was ripped out. Only damage is both retract rails in that wing broke off. the electric retract was 30 feet away from the plane (still working fine). I found the rails still securely screwed to the retracts. I'm glad that the rails failed rather having the wings ripped off. Trying to figure out what happened at the field - we concluded that the right main gear went into the gopher hole and that may have yanked out the retract.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I have a flap question for you all. I'm using hitec HS-325 (standard servo's) on each flap. I'm running 5.1v thru my system. The flaps move smooth and freely. The flap servo's is set up just as the manual instructed. when I bring flaps down and put my fingers under the flaps - with some pressure I can stop the movement. I'm just wondering during flight is the servo's strong enough to move it all the way down?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
broke an exhaust spring valve on my OS FS91S. part# OS 45960200. went online to look for part but found that it is discontinued. I found an OS 70-91SII part # 45960210 - they said it is the newer version. I ordered 2 from towers and found that it is slightly - very slightly bigger in diameter. the old ones just drop right into the slot. these new ones are snug at the bottom where they sit. just curious if it is safe to use? the sping height looks the same and the compression seems to be the same (dont have a meter to check it). just the diameter is slightly slightly different. if there is no more parts for this old engine I figure I might as well try it - maybe on the bench first.

RE: OS 91 Surpass
Ken, did the OS 45960210 valve spring work? I know the diameter is a tad bigger than the 45960200. Just curious.

OS 91 Valve Spring question?
I have an OS FS91S spring # 45960200 - the spring broke before flight. I tried ordering a new part but they discontinued it. I ordered the OS FS70 - FS91 spring # 45960210. It came in today. I looked at the spring and the new one is slightly wider. I tried slipping it into place but it was a real snug fit. doesn't just drop in like the old one. You guys think it is safe to use?

RE: Top-Flite T-34
Thought I keep this Forum going. I just finished building the TF P-51 1/7 scale. Maidened it last weekend and flew great. Now I'm ready to build my second kit plane. I've decided on the TF T-34 and will use this forum as a tool to help me along my build. My plan: OS FS91, 14x7 APC, Hitec Servo's HS-625 on elevator and rudder - standard for the rest, electric retracts, robostruts, and finished with monokote. For this kit I will attempt inner gear doors powered by a servo and door sequencer. I'm going to try to build a removable canopy as a hatch for easy access to the inside. I'm ready to order - keep you guys posted once I get the kit.

It's brass like - soft metal - easy to drill thru. I'm gonna try a 14x8 MAS Sunday morning. Need more Air Speed.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
She flies!! Throttled up - tracked fairly straight - used lot of Right Rudder - tail came up - 30 feet the plane pulled up on her own. made my first turn and noticed it was wanting to climb - got up to 200 feet - started putting trims. I put couple Left aileron clicks - but I had to put a lot of down trim to keep her level. I flew with the retracts down - maybe that had something to do with the ballooning. Couple circuits and she flys hands off level but after I exit out of a turn she begins to climb. I don't think I am flying fast enough. powering it with an OS FS 91P w/ 14x6 MAS at full throttle I can't point the plane up. Loses speed fast and just falls. Tried a loop but just fell out of it at the top. After 5 minutes of flying I decided to bring her in. Used half flaps - started high - cut throttle - and she glided in but continued to keep gliding - touched the ground - had only 30 feet to stop on hard dirt - I gunned the throttle and went back around - same thing but at a lower approach. Glides really nice with wings level at half flaps. touched down at last 1/4 runway. just enough runway to turn around. My impression: I need more speed or I need to pitch up the prop. I'll try a 14x8 - the biggest the OS manual states it can use. Truely, it does not fly like a stunt plane, does not fly like my sport planes. my setup felt more like a way under powered trainer.

raptureboy, the wing is straight and my stab is crooked. Tonight I'm going to pull out one of my other engines out from another plane and put it into the mustang while waiting for the valve spring. I really want to see how this plane flys.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Capriman, I have the OS Valve adjustment tool - I use it to adjust all my OS 4 strokes. I still don't know why the spring would break. I tried looking looking online and some said over reving, another said over heating, and another said - just a bad spring. what is spring bind? is that twisting of the spring? I'm hoping the springs get delivered by friday so that I can get them installed and maiden the P-51.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I put a 11.1v 1800mAh battery all the way in the back - behind the servo tray. that balanced the plane 1/4" forward. I built a forward hatch that is held with magnets - just in front of the canopy - for easy access to refueling, deans plug, and easy viewing of the fuel tank. I'm glad I did that. I took the plane today to the field and started the engine. With a 16x6 MAS I got 8500RPM. Plenty of pull. I then changed the prop to a 14x6 and got 10900 RPM. equal amount of pull. I didn't have a 14x7 on hand but I think that is the ticket for my OS FS 91S engine. it may have been the 16x6 prop and the load it produced but the exhaust valve spring broke in two. suddenly lost power. I'm going to change out both springs just incase. I'll attempt to maiden her this Saturday morning. Hope all goes well.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I didn't get much done today. But just to see what the plane looks like I bolted the wings on, retracts lowered, and placed it on the ground - my first initial response was - COOL!! Then my son walked by and pointed out that my star on the side of the fuse was up side down. Oh, crap!! Too make things worse - viewing from the top of the plane for the very first time I noticed that the plane did not look straight. I measured the ends of the wings and they are on straight. took a yard stick and the fuse is straight. then I measured the distance of the stab from the wings and they were OFF. Almost 1" inch off. the left side of the stab is 1" further than the right. That is HUGE!! don't know how that happened. must have happened during epoxy curing. I think she will fly but she won't fly straight and true. but I don't know - it is just the stab - maybe it won't really affect the flight. what do you guys think?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
tonight is the fuel tank and lines, throttle linkage, drop in the servo's, connect the push rods, and balance. My final step is: mount the battery and receiver so that the plane will balance. I think I read somewhere on this thread that it is best to CG it 1/4" towards the leading edge from 3 7/8". I guess it's better to be nose heavy then tail heavy.

Use those rate earth magnets. They are very strong. I built a removable hatch in front of the canopy and is held with 2the magnets. I'll take pictures this weekend. Finished covering my plane. Stupid me, I put one of the stars up side down. Hopefully no one will notice.

forgot about the glue. Done monokoting the fuse. applied decals late last night. must have been late because one of the stars on the side of the fuse is upside down. tonight I'll paint the canopy, scoop, and cowl. tomorrow or Wednesday I'll start covering the wing. Electronics hopefully by Friday. Hope the engine starts.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
got the scoop to fit, fillet drying, control horns marked and ready to drill. All thats left is to sand the fillet, put in the electronics, and hook up the control arms. still debating on the color. question: I plan to use polycarbonate tamiya paint for the canopy - Do I paint the inside or the outside?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I think I can get the scoop to fit - just need to do some wood shaving. I'm debating to do the fillet. After these two - all that is left is to cover the plane, add electronics, glue the hinges, and some other final detail. As of now the plane is really nose heavy with the OS FS 91. Hopefully it balances out with the electronics.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
I just checked the fit of the radiator scoop on the wing and it doesn't slide over the F-8B plywood. it's a 1/4 inch short. when I mount the wings to the fuse and then check the fit of the scoop - there is a gap of 1/4 inch. The aileron servo tray "W-1B/C" seems to be hitting the scoop. Can I just trim it down?

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Wondering if I should do the Reno Racer scheme. Aluminum color is hard to see on a cloudy day. I just have to hinge the flaps, sand the wing tips to match the ailerons, final sanding, fix the tail gear assembly - oh shoot, forgot about the fillet and radiator scoop. well, little more work.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
All thats left is: Finish final sanding - hinge ailerons, flaps, elevator, and rudder - fuel proof wheel well - sand wing tips - radiator scoop - cockpit - Oh, and repair the plastic dual ball joint for the tail rudder and gear (broke last week while trying to cut the wire). I'm gonna have to cut open the bottom to get to it. I may build a hatch for the bottom for future maintenance. And finally, covering.

tonight is mounting engine, sanding fuse, and re-enforcing with epoxy behind the firewall. tomorrow - throttle control linkage setup, build the front nose section, carving and shaping - then fuel proofing the engine area. Friday - fuel proofing the wheel well, sanding wings, hinging control surfaces.
