Covering removal
I recently purchased a Hangar 9 P51 BNF airplane that has been in its box for a very long time I guess. It has the servos, engine, receiver and the battery already installed. The coating has more wrinkles than any plane I have ever seen. After An hour of trying to iron them all out of the fuse without much success, I pulled out the wing and tried to get the wrinkles out of it without much success. The covering on the flaps is so wrinkled I am not going to be able to save it or for that matter the whole plane needs to be recovered. I have removed covering in the past and was just wondering if there is an easier way to get the old covering off. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Getting started, on a budget, with a size limit
I have found the easiest way to find planes on Craigslist is to look under toys and games. Or look on eBay.

RE: Transmitter question
I agree with the guy that says your radio is okay. I have the same radio, it was on the shelf for at least 7 years. I couldn't find the receiver so I bought a tower hobbies brand. They are made by futaba, ordered it with my frequency, bought a new 2700 mill. Battery for my transmitter and a 6 volt 2000 mill. For my receiver from Just Batterys and installed it with some old 148 servos, charged both for 2 days for the first charge and went out flying with no problems, and still flying the same set up 6 months later without 1 failure.

RE: Transmitter question
No you will not need a regulator for a 4.8 volt system and you can get 1100 mill. Battery packs in 4.8 volts

RE: Do you remember being a beginner???
I learned to fly on a used 3 channel futaba radio and a used balsa USA swizzle stick. It didn't have ailerons, just, just rudder and elevator and throttle to rev up the old K&B 40 engine. The fuse was painted school bus yellow and the wing and feathers were red. It was ugly but it flew, and really flew pretty well. That was 1984 and have been hooked since.

RE: Transmitter question
You can get a 2700 mill. pack for your receiver and a 6 volt 2500 mill. pack for your receiver. Your receiver and servos will work on 6 volts with no problem plus it will give your servos more torque and your regular charger will charge it with no problem.

RE: Wanting to get started.
If your thinking about buying a used plane, there is a Hobbico Superstar Mk II trainer on craigslist in Lubbock that includes a 40 engine, radio, batteries, charger, radio and everything else you need for 200.00 pretty cheap way to get started.

RE: Wanting to get started.
For the beginner in Abilene. I am in Odessa Texas just right down the road. I agree that nitro is the way to go for your first plane. There are lots of good flying trainer planes so pick one that you like but not love as all planes have a crash dare, just don't know what date it is. I started fling again aftera 20 year lull and 2 wives but I picked a trainer to get back the feel of the sticks. I bought a TWM sky raider Mach 1 ARF and got it ready to fly. It has a good wing span and a bolt on wing and they are a good looking plane and easy to finish. It is still one of my favorite planes to fly as the west Texas wind seems to blow all the time and the sky raider handles the wind really well and the cost of one is less than 125.00 dollars. Then you will need an engine, 40 size is good, and watch eBay for a good sale price on one. You can usually find one for 75.00 or less and that would include shipping. You will need to get several props, a 10 x 6 is good for the engine and plane. Then you will need to buy some fuel. I fly 15% nitro but you can choose what fuel you want to fly with. And you will need a chicken stick or an electric starter, and if you choose electric starter, you will need a small 12 volt battery also. And you will need a glow plug lighter to light the glow plug. Then you will need a good radio. I personally use futaba radios, but there are other good brands too. Look on eBay as you can get a good system pretty reasonable on there. You are going to need to go ahead and get a complete radio system at the start as you are going to need 4 servos, a transmitter and a receiver and you can get all of that in a complete radio package. A flight box is not mandatory but comes in handy to hold your fuel, starter, etc. oh and you will need to get some fuel hose to plumb your motor. Depending in the plane you buy, you may or may not need to buy a spinner also. All of the above can be purchased at various hobby stores online. I tend to buy a lot of stuff from tower hobbies as they almost always have everything you need in stock. If the radio you buy doesn't have a receiver battery with it, you will need one of those too. Again you can find them on eBay pretty cheap, and I use 6 volt 2500 milliamperes battery packs in all my planes. You will also need some thin ca glue and some 6 minute epoxy to assemble your plane with. And depending on which plane you get, if it has a wing that is held on with rubber bands, you will need to get a box of #64 rubber bands. If you choose a flight box, get you a fuel pump to pump your fuel in the plane. A hand pump works well. You will need to balance your prop too as vibration is bad for a plane. You will need some foam padding to wrap around your reciever and battery pack in the plane and I glue Velcro strips in to hold my electronics. I am sure I have missed a few things but this is most or maybe all the essentials you will need, plus all the sim time you can get.

RE: Should I Quit
My suggestion would be to get one plane and keep trying with just one plane. If you crash, get another just like it. I learned to fly on a balsa USA sick 40. The fuse on the plane is just 2 long maple spars with some tail feathers and a plywood box for the wing to sit on and to hold the electronics. It cost around 70 bucks and you can buy another wing for about 20 bucks. I rebuilt the fuse on mine with wood from hobby lobby 5 or six times before I crashed it and totaled it completely. So I just ordered another wing and bought the wood from hobby lobby and used my drawings and built a new fuse from scratch. You paint the fuse and only have to cover the wing and tail feathers and the plane is a good flying plane that can really take a lot of abuse.

RE: My friend wants a cool looking starter plane.
I am not a trainer, just a flyer. My brother had been flying for 15 years and got Me interested in the hobby. I built my first plane, a pt-40 high wing trainer. Took me forever to build, but I finally got it together, did a fair job on the monokote, installed a 40x entail and was as proud as a new father of my plane. I flew on a trainer cord for about an hour and just marveled that it flew without any issues other than I little fine tuning. We were about done with flying mine and he was wanting to fly his moonraker, so he took over and was circling to bleed of some flight when suddenly the wing broke in half and the rest drilled into the ground. The 2 wing halves drifted to the ground, and we were both staring at what was left of my beautiful plane that I spent hours and hours building. My brother felt really bad and I just couldn't believe that it was just a bunch of broken sticks left of my creation. I had to come to the realization that all planes have a expiration date and not get too attached to any of them. My brother did give me another plane as he felt as bad as me. Only thing we could figure out is I didn't get the wing halves glued together as well as I thought I did. I really think you need him to understand that anything can go wrong at any time, and he is creating more problems for you and him over the plane he wants. Try your best to explain to him that a trainer is called a trainer for a reason. They are more forgiving when you make a mistake but still are fun to fly. I have a sky raider Mach 1 trainer that I still enjoy flying. I just tweaked it up a little with more throw on the controls , and it is fun to fly and it is a good looking plane.

RE: Semi-Symmetrical, Hi-wing, ARF/RTF Options?
I quit flying for 24 years and got the itch and started flying again this last summer. Knowing I was going to be very rusty from not flying for so long , I wanted a trainer to start back off flying again. My brother has been flying for over 35 years and recommended that I buy a world model Mach1 and that's what I did. I have built planes from kits in the past, so building the Arf Mach 1 was really easy. The plane is a full symmetrical wing that is flat, but that's what I was wanting. The trainers with semi symmetrical wings and lots of dihedral tend to just want to float and glide and I wanted a trainer that was just a good all round plane. I installed a 46 os la engine w/ a 10 6 prop and off to the field I went. And I was right, I was very rusty with the sticks. The Mach was very forgiving and after a full throttle takeoff and gaining some altitude I pulled it back to about 2/3 throttle and trimmed it out. The plane is awesome. I set it up on dual rates and started flying on the low rate to get the feel of flying again and just to get the feel of the Mach 1.after a couple of weeks and 10 tanks of fuel, I took her off and switched her to high rates. The plane is just so easy to fly. It gets right in the groove and stays there. It is not a 3d plane by no means , but it is pretty acrobatic on high rates and just fun to fly. I am flying a hangar 9 Tango w/ a Evolution 46 w a 12.25 x 3.75 prop now along with a Hangar 9 Twist 60 w a Evolution 60 w a 14 x 4 prop. But I still take the Mach 1 with me when I go fly as it is a fun plane to fly. I have my son flying now and started him on a green Mach 1 as mine is red w/ a trainer cord and he is doing great. Just about ready to solo. The Mach 1 looks good in the air and has good different colors from the bottom to top so you always know which way the plane is oriented.

RE: Best engine for Twist V2?
I am flying my twist w/ a 46 evolution ans a 12.25 x 3.75 acp prop. It has plenty of power and speed and the evolution 46 seems to be a great engine for this plane. very short takeoffs and walk in landings
